30 Films I Watched In 2023 #22
this wasn't on letterboxd, so I'm posting it here.
Last Of The Summer Wine: Getting Sam Home (1983)
I discovered Last Of The Summer Wine a year ago and since then I've fallen in love with it's comical and endearing characters so when I discovered the season 7 finale was a tv movie I was ecstatic
luckily It did not disappoint, like the show this film is full of hilarious slapstick, though it's more of a dark comedy with the trio reacting to they're cohort Sam's death in a rather nonchalant fashion, our trio as well seemed a bit more cynical but not in an overbearing way
the reason why this film feels somewhat different compared to the show is that it's based of Roy Clarke's 1974 novel of the same name, now they are bound to be apparent changes but I've never read the novel so I can't list them off with precision
Sam was an endearing character himself even though we see little of him alive, judging from his disastrous relationship with Sybil it's reasonable to assume the man was miserable for a long time, much like poor little Wally Batty
I swear marriage in this show is perceived as worse than death, luckily though Sam died cuddling with the woman he truly loved with a silly grin on his face which stays for the entire movie
another aspect I loved about this film was despite it being an extended episode really, it was filmed in a very cinematic fashion so it really feels like Last Of The Summer Wine: The Movie
as for my criticisms apparently this film was intended to be a Christmas special yet the atmosphere didn't implicate Christmas in the slightest, I also felt the narration was a bit jarring and unneeded, that never happened in the show
unfortunately this film marks the last appearance of a beloved character I always enjoyed Sid, the actor John Comer passed away shortly after filming from throat cancer he was rendered unable to speak so Tony Melody dubbed his lines and props to him because his impression was pretty convincing
overall, Last Of The Summer Wine: Getting Sam Home was a fun darkly comedic tv movie perfectly encapsulating the humor and charm of the show, i'd say it's a worthy adaptation and if your a fan of last of the summer wine, this is definitely worth the watch, 9/10

The Poor Demented Capitalist
I gave my nephew who graduated high school last year a Visa gift card for Christmas & he sent me a thank you card saying he was going to use it to purchase ethereum or some other electro-crap currency to increase his portfolio. He has a Summer internship in Atlanta & I thought he might spend the card on booze & romance. All I could think about was this bit of Compo Simmonite dialog from Last of the Summer Wine - “the poor demented capitalist”:

1575 The Dumas Effect Free Energy Water Heater Explained
I love this guy. He’s so cheerful. He’s the spitting image, right down to the accent of Tom Owen(*)  from Last of the Summer Wine. He could’ve had a great role as one of the Jailer’s in the Gladiator scene in The Life of Brian- you know that bit where they switch out of gormless character mode and start talking technical.
* Who played William Simmonite, Compo’s, Billl Owen’s, son and who was Bill Owen’s actual son.

Sorry random questions but just curious
Is there any last of the summer wine characters who you like in a crush sort of way? Also if you lived in the last of the summer wine universe what would you do if you know what I mean? Like if you were a character in the show?
Also lastly what do you think of the later last of the summer wine Episodes? The ones without compo? Do you like to watch those ones as well? Or do you only watch the compo ones?
Sorry for randomly asking this lol its just no one else on tumblr really knows about this wonderful show lol
Hi!
There’s no one I have a crush on really, oooh! I’ve never thought about that before. I love Clegg’s and Howard and Pearl’s little cottages the most so I’d love to be a neighbour of theirs, I’d like to be a Glenda type character since I’ve always loved her and her life- living with a loving husband who I adore, have a good friendly relationship with all the other women in the little town, Own a dog so I can go for long walks across the beautiful moors every day and just live a very happy, simple, easy, slow life ❤️
I personally don’t like the later episodes. For me Compo is the main character and made the show, it’s not the same without his banter and playfulness. I do like watching the very last episode though just because it was the very last and it’s tradition to always quote Cleggy’s last line “Did I lock the door?” 🥹
No need to apologise! Thank you for such interesting questions 😄 It’s a shame it’s not appreciated as much anymore. It’s definitely is such a wonderful show from the theme tune, the beautiful scenery to the loveable characters.
