April 2023 News: Update on Phase IV Construction; Rock to Rock Day of Service; Ride the State 2023
Tumblr media
Dear Friend of the Farmington Canal Greenway,
We wanted to wish you a happy spring and provide a few updates:
* Farmington Canal Phase IV Construction Update
Tumblr media
City officials have recently informed us that construction of the new downtown segment of trail (known as "Phase IV") has fallen a bit behind schedule and is currently scheduled for completion in Fall 2023. Because of provisions in the construction easement agreements with adjoining property owners, construction work behind Audubon Street is restricted during summer months because of summer camps that take place at the arts organizations located there. Unless the project is fully completed before June, which we had hoped, work in certain areas will have to stop and then resume later in the year. Obviously we'd hoped and anticipated to see Phase IV open this spring -- still, we are glad to see the construction continuing to move ahead. Please make sure you are on our email list and follow us on social media for further updates. If you're connected with us, we will also make sure you are notified about the ribbon-cutting event this fall.
* Spring Cleaning Day on the Trail, Saturday, April 15
Meet at the Learning Corridor (Hazel/Shelton), 10am
Join us for our annual "spring cleaning day" on the Trail. This is one of our major stewardship events for getting the trail in shape for the spring and summer season. It also coincides with Rock to Rock Day of Service. Meet us at the Learning Corridor at 10am or whenever you can get here -- we will be working until 12:30pm or so. We will have some tools available but please bring your own gloves if possible. Also bring a water bottle. Water is available at the Learning Corridor.
* Rock to Rock Earth Day Ride, Saturday, April 29
New Haven's premier environmental fundraising event, Rock to Rock, is celebrating its 15th Annual event on April 29 and registration is now open! Pick from one of six thrilling routes: 2 family rides (1-mile flat, 5-mile-summit); 12-mile; 20-mile; 40-mile; and the metric century, plus park walks! All rides will begin and end in East Rock Park (College Woods) where there is a Kids Bike Rodeo and a Green Fair with live music and food carts.
After you register, you get to choose which Rock to Rock partner organization you want to support. Please consider selecting our partners Farmington Canal Rail-to-Trail Association or Community Placemaking and Engagement Network (CPEN) as one of the organizations you are supporting. Thank you!
* Bike to Work Day on the Trail, Friday, May 19
Please save the date for an event on the Trail celebrating National Bike to Work Day. It won't be as elaborate as our event last year which coincided with the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Farmington Canal, but it will be fun and there will be free food. Details TBA.
* 'Ride the State' from New Haven to Massachusetts, Saturday, June 24
Tumblr media
This is a great opportunity to ride the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail all the way from New Haven to Massachusetts in a supported group ride setting. It is an amazing way to see the many sides of Connecticut including both historic cities and rural scenery. There will be a shuttle returning riders from Massachusetts to New Haven after the ride is complete. “Ride The State” is always a great experience and a unique way of seeing Connecticut! Prices go up on June 15 so register now if you are interested. Learn more here.
._________________________________________
As always, thank you for your ongoing support.
