Aww he does remember meeting Xiao Feng when he was little. I'm glad.

I do love that Xiao Feng fights with his team all the time, but he's all wise when he's talking to Lu Xiaobei. It's interesting when Lu Xiaobei said Xiao Feng was a human strategy book I was expecting to see more of that. Maybe we will later. I think I was just expecting something a bit more like Ye Xiu where it's clear he understands the game on a higher level than everyone else.

Okay, yeah, this is exactly the sort of thing I meant. Clearly they knew what I wanted to see :D

Of course Lu Xiaobei has to get the opportunity to defeat the man who killed his brother. I'm assuming at some point he'll find out somehow so that beating Gravity becomes extra personal

Mid year book freakout tag

This has been a bit of a weird reading year for me so far but here we go.

1. What is the best book you've read in 2024 so far?

Toss up between Exo+Cross Fire (Fonda Lee) and Alien Clay (Adrian Tchaikovsky)

Right, so Exo+Cross Fire, a duology, is a fantastically nuanced take on colonialism/imperialism, and also a very compelling, fun, interesting, heart-wrenching read. There are fun aliens! Well, I say "fun". Interesting might be the word.

And Alien Clay is a drily humorous story of a man at an exoplanetary labour camp attempting to scientifically understand alien life while also straining against dogmatic rules for said science. There is fun alien life! Well, I say "fun". Interesting might be the word.

2. Best sequel you've read so far in 2024?

Cross Fire (Fonda Lee) or The Girl and the Moon (Mark Lawrence) (it really stuck the landing. Like really).

3. New (from 2024, ideally) release you haven't read yet, but want to?

Most Ardently, Gabe Cole Novoa (Pride and Prejudice retelling with an trans Oliver Bennet, who most believe is a girl named Elizabeth, as main character? Yes, please)

4. Most anticipeated release for second half of 2024?

I haven't really looked at what's coming :/

5. Biggest disappointment?

I've read some really meh books this year but they've mostly been weird romance stuff where I wouldn't necessarily expect them to be great either. Idk. Maybe Sweet Berries (CM Nascosta) or Bound to the Shadow Prince (Ruby Dixon) because they were worse than books by the same authors I'd already read - so below expectations.

6. Biggest surprise?

Probably that I really enjoyed an Omegaverse book: Lola & the Millionairs (Parts 1 and 2), Kathryn Moon.

7. New favourite author?

I read my first T Kingfisher this year - A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking - and it was so fun and lovely! I am a sucker for familiars (in various shapes and forms) and this one has two :D so probably that one. I guess we'll see how I feel once I've read more from Kingfisher.

Runner up is Mark Lawrence - I read him for the first time 2023 (The Girl and the Stars) but finished that trilogy, Book of the Ice, this year - and am now looking forward to reading more by him.

8. Newest fictional crush?

Oh this is always hard, I don't know that I get crushes like that? I tend to like the characters in the relationships they're in, not for myself. I certainly liked the pack from Lola (maybe especially Matthieu). I loved Edwin and Robin from A Marvellous Light (Freya Marske) together. The Shadow Creature in Two for Tea: Welcome to Azathé (CM Nascosta) was an inspiring concept.

9. Newest favourite character?

Bob the Sentient Sourdough Starter (A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking, T Kingfisher).

10. Book that made you cry?

Exo/Cross Fire, Fonda Lee (I read these in quick succession and am struggling to remember what happened in which book, but I think both may have made me cry, actually. Certainly at least one)

11. Book that made you happy?

Well, plenty of cozy romancy stuff, I guess - at least temporarily (The Dragons of Mayfair come to mind. Also Lola). But also any of the really great books like Exo and Alien Clay will make me happy just because they're good and I enjoy them.

12. Most beautiful book you've bought this year?

Didn't by either of these as I listened to them via my audiobook service (where you don't pay for individual books, you subscribe and get access to their library), but the Book of the Ice books are all gorgeous, and I love the cover of Alien Clay as well.

13. What books do you really need to read by the end of the year?

Oh god, I need to get back into and finish Witch King (Martha Wells), it is silly and stupid that I've just stopped in the middle. I mean I love it! It's so so good. And because I love it so much I worry I'll ruin the reading experience of it by being in a weird reading funk. (Also I feel bad because I'm (supposed to be) buddy reading it with @moriaine).

Feeling like the mother hen

When there are certain situations with mental health there are active roles in which you feel like your the mother hen of certain situations regardless if its work or personal life related you always feel like you need to look after people. That is what I am like but then sometimes that is a settling feeling to us

As well as that mother hen feeling I like to be in control of things and don't tell people certain things and if I don't have control then that petrifies me. That's why I bottle things up because of things like peoples reaction to things and I cant be in control of what they are going to say or do and I hate that. However there are times that when I am not in control I go completely crackers and i loose all sense of the normal things that are the standard basic looking after yourself skills like taking the trash out or having a shower or doing the dishes. that is something that drives me insane when I don't have control.

Feeling OCD is a very certain circumstances, Smelling the clean in my house when I feel in control relaxes me and if I don't smell clean then its not clean enough in my eyes or when I write things down in my diary sometimes in needs to be filled so that there is no room left on the page. that is something that makes me think I'm busy when its actually some of it isn't really that important

Being in the cross fire of things I hate because that is why I don't tell people nothing because the cross fire is something that feels like a thousand bullets being shot in your direction it doesn't need to be simple things that make you like this. It can be words it could be triggered that can lose the feeling of being in control.

Therapy helps people like us I didn't realise it till recently there is a lot of things going on with me sometimes its harder to get though then others to understand my feeling and getting to my emotions but its easier to talk to someone and let your feelings out then figuring something out before that's it you break.

Madara: Hmmm~. So, they’re training as a pair, huh? They look like they’re having fun, aren’t they? 

Jun: —And, why’re you looking at me?

Madara: Well then, Kuro-san. I’d like to clearly establish the details of our match one last time. 

The match will be held four days from now, in the afternoon.

This activity will be part of the events lined up to promote BUTOUKAI, so there’ll be some filming on-site, but other than that, the rules will follow those of the actual CROSS FIRE bouts. 

The use of weapons is prohibited. Attacks to the back of the head and vital areas are prohibited. Biting and scratching are prohibited too, but other than that, anything goes. 

The player who KO's his opponent in 10 rounds wins—Do you have objections to any of that?

Kuro: Nope, I’m down with all that. Ya better take good care of yerself so you don’t get hurt, you hear? 

Madara: Hahaha! That’s my line, you knowww!

You would have a slight advantage if it were just martial arts, Kuro-san. However, this is Mixed Martial Arts. Any technique is allowed… … so that means my chances of winning will be pretty high too!

Do be careful not to let your guard down!

Jun: Woah~. The air between the both of them’s just crackling with tension, isn’t it~?

I didn’t expect everything would turn out as Nagumo-kun had hoped for, but I’m really looking forward to the actual showdown!

Adonis: Fufu~. It looks like there’s a storm of sparks flying between them, but they do seem to be enjoying themselves too. 

I never thought the two of them would have such a connection arising from the Dragon King Competition from way back then. Watching them carry out that historic battle once again will certainly be a highlight among the events.

Tetora: My thoughts exactly~!

Everyone will have three days to prepare. How you spend your time starting from today is up to you, which means that the battle has already begun!

I’m no good at applying those skills. If I’m unable to execute ‘em properly, I won’t be able to fight in an MMA battle, right?

Jun: Nope. You do know no one will recklessly go along with you just because you tell them to, don’t you~?

Wouldn’t it be better to train with someone you’re already familiar with? Plus, I think it would be a good idea to have the Track and Field Team be the ones going up against the Karate Club, don’t you?

Madara: If that’s the case, the Track and Field Team wouldn't stand a chance. Fighting isn't our speciality, after all?

We would need more manpower to gain the upper hand over our opponents. I’d be very grateful if you could help out with that!

Adonis: I agree with Senpai, too. 

If Mikejima-senpai and I were to form a two-man team by ourselves, that means Sazanami would be left all alone. 

We’re muscle-training buddies, aren’t we? I don’t want you to be the only one left on your own. 

Jun: Haa~. I’m real sorry to have caused you to worry about me like that. Since you’ve gone and put it that way, I guess there’s no choice but for me to help out, after all!

Madara: Yes! It’ll really be a big help me too, Jun-san. 

Jun-san’s an avid manga reader, so you’d have a wealth of knowledge from fighting and delinquent manga. It’ll be very reassuring to receive all sorts of advice from you~ ♪ 

Jun: No, no way. I don’t think my knowledge of manga will be of any help in your situation, you know~? They’re just unrealistic techniques and theories that are probably nowhere near legit at all—

But then again~, this is for the sake of our much-anticipated Shuffle Unit after all, so why not pull out all the stops?  

It’d be such a let-down if Kiryu-senpai were to one-sidedly dominate the match. If we could add some colour to liven up that practice match of BUTOUKAI’s, we can probably expect the viewership ratings to increase, won’t we? 

Haha~! To think I’m actually using words like ‘increase viewership ratings’ when I’m really clueless about how to go about doing it. If Ibara—who’s an expert in that field—were to hear me, he’d probably burst out laughing, huh~?

Madara: Nope. They may be amateur ideas, but even so, that is the work that’s expected of us. 

We’ll make up for that lack with enthusiasm! Let’s get started with training right away, Inexperienced Trio! 

Jun: EH~! Is that really what we’re calling our trio?!

Well, whatever. It doesn’t matter what we call ourselves; I’ll get to watch a red-hot battle either way. 

There’s really no telling how all of this will turn out—the success of this Shuffle Project is riding on us!
