I signed up for a gym yesterday with my husband because I've been missing weight lifting. It was my form of therapy for a few years until I had my son, and then he stole all my energy and I hadn't done it until earlier last year when I was doing crossfit for a bit. But then biweekly appointments took over that time slot and I had to stop.
So now I'm going to be the 19 week pregnant woman lifting weights at the gym and probably being stared at while I do. But oh well, I'm dragging my ass there despite the fact that this morning where I live it feels like -39°F with the wind chill.
#bella getting personal#just going to think of that hot coffee ill have after#and ignore how sore my pregnant ass will definitely be

"Harry Styles is a better singer than me. As People magazine’s sexiest musician alive 2023, he’s better looking too. But because I’m a fitness writer by trade, the hardest pill to swallow is that he might be in better condition.
This realization dawned on me as Styles’ coach Thibo David walked me through one of his typical training sessions.
They kick things off with a slow 10 to 30-minute jog, followed by a rapid one-mile run and a bodyweight challenge comprising 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups and 100 air squats within eight minutes. Once that’s done, David considers the warm-up complete.
What follows is a melee of weighted circuits, more running and core work which left me both intimidated and intrigued. So, as a fitness aficionado and Coach’s unofficial workout guinea pig, I decided to give it a go. All of it.
30-minute slow-paced run
If you include the one-mile run and bodyweight challenge, this is the hardest warm-up I’ve ever done, but, given the intensity required for the next two elements I’m promoting them to workout status.
My usual warm-up routine consists of 10-minutes on a bike or exercise bike, followed by 15 minutes of dynamic stretching. The slow-paced run offered a similar introduction to my morning session, but after that I was in unfamiliar territory.
Run one mile as fast as possible
David says Harry Styles can run a mile in an impressive 5min 13sec—a standard some of the professional athletes David coaches can’t match—but I was urged to run my own race.
“Don’t go in thinking ‘he did it in five minutes, I’m going to do the same’, just keep on pushing,” says David. “Don’t think about anything else, your time is yours.”
So I found myself haring through a UK park at 30°F. The cold air stung my lungs and my heart rate soon soared, but I managed to stick to a pace I, as an average runner at best, was fairly happy with and finished in 5min 59sec.
In eight minutes complete:
100 push-ups
100 sit-ups
100 unweighted squats
This was far closer to my wheelhouse as a CrossFit fan. I chose to tackle it in alternating sets of 10, transitioning quickly between exercises to finish within the eight-minute limit. But even commando rolling from push-up to sit-up then springing into the squats left me little time to spare.
I took 7min 39sec, and, somewhat unexpectedly, given I can barbell squat more than 300lb, it was my quads that blew up the most. Whether this was the result of the one-mile run before it or heavy front squats the day before, I couldn’t say, but my thighs were on fire by the final rep.
Four rounds of:
1min kettlebell swings (16kg)
1min box jumps
2min sandbag over-the-shoulder (20kg)
2min alternating dumbbell clean and press
1min rest
This was the part of the training day I felt most comfortable with—probably because it bore the closest resemblance to CrossFit.
“I like to say that I train very smart, but you also have to be very stupid sometimes, you know? Do this type of workout in the most stupid way; go hard at the task at hand, like when you throw a ball for a dog and it goes super crazy.
“This is a very good workout for that. Very good at building everything that needs to be added after the aerobic base; aggressiveness, speed, that go-hard mentality.”
I tend to ease off the throttle in timed workouts like this, so I set a couple of goals going in.
Firstly: no taking long breaks mid-minute. Secondly, hit a set number of reps each round. I pushed my body reasonably hard during the first round and found that 30 kettlebell swings, 18 box jumps, 20 sandbag-over-shoulders and 30 clean and presses made tricky but achievable targets for me.
Things did become particularly spicy during round three and four though, as my body began to tire with the sustained effort.
My posterior chain (the muscles running along the back side of the body) took a battering from the kettlebell swings and sandbag-over-shoulders, my already-fried legs felt heavy during the box jumps, and my shoulders grew tired from two minutes of straight clean and presses—it was a serious test of muscular endurance.
Eight rounds of:
30-45sec sprint (16-21km/h) at a 0.5-2.5% gradient
90sec rest
In the absence of a treadmill I sought out a nearby hill. For the first interval I ran as far up the hill as I could in 30 seconds (about 220 meters), sending my heart rate skywards.
Then I took 90 seconds to walk back down the hill before repeating this distance. I also did 12 total rounds—I wanted the full Styles experience, after all—but I’d live to regret this. The hill I chose grew progressively steeper as I worked my way up it, and by the eighth round I felt like death. My sprints turned to slogs, and the time it took me to complete the distance I established in the first interval grew longer.
The prior running and box jumps didn’t help either, but I got it done eventually in less than 30 minutes
15 minutes of “diverse core exercises including planks, one-sided farmer’s walks, side planks and sit-up variations”.
These exercise suggestions offer a comprehensive core workout, recruiting a wide range of mid-body muscles from the rectus abdominis (of six-pack fame) to the spine-supporting transverse abdominis and erector spinae, which play a major role in maintaining posture.
I also appreciated the addition of a one-sided loaded carry, which challenged my core to keep me upright as a weight pulled me sideways. After all, while the core is always credited with moving the spine, it’s also needed for resisting unwanted movement under load.
10-15 minutes of assisted stretching
David left me to my own devices for this final part, so I worked my way through a 10-minute mobility routine on the Pliability app.
This was a relaxing way to wrap up a far from relaxing morning of training, and gave me a second to catch my breath after a monumental effort which lasted a little over two hours.
How I Found Harry Styles’ Workout
I swapped this day of training for one of my usual CrossFit sessions and had a lot of fun doing it. Every part of my body felt like it had been put through the ringer thanks to the muscle-burning circuit and lung-taxing running elements. I was also very, very hungry.
Another thing that impressed me was Styles’ evident fitness levels and work ethic; how he has the energy to perform for two hours during a stadium tour is no longer a mystery.
Another thing I liked about my chat with David was his openness and honesty. I often see articles online saying celebrities do a few Pilates classes or HIIT workouts each week to stay in unbelievable shape, and he was keen to dispel this myth.
“Collaborating with Harry Styles was an absolute delight; his commitment is unparalleled,” says David.
“But it’s important to note that this level of training isn’t suitable for everyone. Harry was inherently fit, but achieving the level of fitness needed for this session still required time, work and effort. Rushing into such high-volume workouts can pose risks.”
David also stressed that sessions of this intensity weren’t done every day, and the nature of his workouts will often “depend on the day and the state of the athlete”.
“It’s crucial to emphasize the significance of proper periodization,” says David. “Not every day constituted an intense session. In fact, we strategically incorporated recovery sessions which often involved a light run combined with core exercises and mobility work. Every workout was thoughtfully placed within the overall training plan.”

How should both Superman and Wonder Woman be ideally written?
Ah! The old question.
The first answer is NOT THE WAY THEY ARE.
They are both trusting people, but they should not be gullible and naive. Not even in their secret identities, which I wish they ditch.
Let's see: Superman's main goal is not being noticed when in his Clark Kent persona, so it makes no sense at all he behaves like a bumbling and clumsy giant all the f...ing time. Don't you think it attracts too much undesired attaention to him? Not saying he must be a clever, suave devonair all the time, just a young professional comfortable in his job and his own skin, a normal person, bah.
Diana is a woman men look at. She's beautiful, extremely beautiful, so it makes no sense she acts like a nun, unaware of the amount of male lucious gazes she attracts. I know a lot of outstanding females who have normal jobs, using their looks like another tool of the trade. Her clothes don't need to be cocktail or party dresses all the time, but a normal business suit, every day casual clothes like a jean and shirt with sneakers, a jean jacket. To justify her physique, she can practice ballet, crossfit or some athletic activity, like a young urban professional woman.
In any case, I don't want the secret identity: it's a waste of 50% of their time. They probably spend more time protecting that useless secret than the innocent. Besides, they don't need to have a job to survive, they can dig for antiques, precious stones or valuable metals and sell them. They well could build their own company, but that also calls for too much attention.
They must be in touch with humans in order to know what we need and how to better protect us, but not to tell them what to do all the time, like Batso, Lane and Trevor. Humans always have a hidden agenda, and they need to be free to better perform their mission.
They are true Citizens of the World, they don't need afiliation with any country and/or human faction. If they want to assist those in need they can do it taking the help directly to those places themselves, without human intervention. Remember: humans always have a hidden agenda. Always.
They aren't above the laws, that's why they are part of groups like the Justice League and others to get feedback in what the other think they are doing wrong. They are in contact with the powerful and the meek and listen. The truth is always somewhere in the middle.
They prefer to provide a voice to those who can't speak for themselves, those deprived of an instrument in the Global symphony.
They won't pretend to be gods. They know they can't save everybody, still, they try it anyway, they strive to do what benefits the majority and respond personally to everyone they let down and publicly atone for their mishaps and limitations with humility.
Tey need our trust in them to do what they must. No, not faith: trust based on facts.
They try to build a new school or educational center every day. In the middle of the jungle, in the top of a mountain, in the desert. In the slums. In suburvia. They think a key component of truth is education. Without knowing all the options, is impossible to choose. Choice is the only thing that gets us closer to freedom.
Their motto is "Truth, Justice and Love. For all." That's what they live for.
That would be my corner stone to begin writing Superman and Wonder Woman. I believe it's a firm foundation. We, unfortunatelly, will never see it.

The best workout shoes can make or break your fitness experience. You can’t saunter into the gym in a pair of loafers and expect to set a new squat PR. (Though if you do, get it on video.) Workout shoes provide the proper foundation upon which all of your exercise happens, ensuring you're calm, cool, and collected as you sweat it out. Comfortable yet functional, they’re essential to getting the most out of your workouts, and they make an excellent gift for the fitness fanatic in your life.Everyone works out for a different reason, so narrowing down the list can be tricky—that's where we come in. Across 12 different categories, we’ve selected the best workout shoes in the game, so whether you’re a diehard gym rat who never skips leg day, looking to PR in a half marathon, or recently caught the pickleball bug, we’ve got all the top picks you need to paint your athletic masterpiece or find the perfect present for the gym rat in your life. The Most Wanted Workout Shoes for Every ActivityBest Workout Shoes Overall: Reebok Nano X5, $90Best Workout Shoes for Cross Training: Hoka Kawana 2, $140Best Workout Shoes for CrossFit: Nike Metcon 9, $150Best Workout Shoes for the Gym: NoBull Outwork Edge Shoes, $149Best Squat Shoes: TYR L-2 Lifter, $225Best Workout Shoes for Lifting: Vivobarefoot Motus Strength, $200Best Workout Shoes for Running: Brooks Ghost 16, $140Best Workout Shoes for Trail Running: Arc'teryx Norvan LD 4 GTX Trai4 Running Shoes, $200Best Workout Shoes for Pickleball: Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 6, $140Best Workout Shoes for Climbing: La Sportiva Katana Lace, $219Best Workout Shoes for Race Day: Nike Vaporfly 4, $260Best Recovery Shoes: Kane Revive, $80In This GuideAccordionItemContainerButtonBest Workout Shoes Overall: Reebok Nano X5The Reebok Nano X5 does just about everything and does it well. Just as capable of handling a regular lift as a CrossFit session or even a Barry's class, it’s practically a one-stop shop for all your gym-related needs. Flexible enough for dynamic movement but still stable enough to ground hardcore lifts, these gym shoes do it all with a Goldilocks amount of foam cushion. While it’s not the best shoe for powerlifting or olympic weightlifting, it gets the job done, and it’s more than well-equipped for accessory movements and the activities that most of us will do in a gym workout—deadlifts, lunges, basically anything dumbbell related—while maintaining a good amount of breathability that keeps it feeling light. Versatility is the name of the game here, and if you’re looking only to get one shoe for the gym, this is it, hands down, because it just transitions so well from exercise to exercise. If you do any form of working out, here's the shoe you'll need.Best Workout Shoes for Cross Training: Hoka Kawana 2HokaKawana 2AccordionItemContainerButtonProsNeutral shoe with decent cushionGrounded feelConsNot as much cushion as some Hoka diehards are probably used toNot really suited for long-runsAs we discussed in our best cross-trainers piece, the Kawana’s are versatile shoes that are ready for anything right out of the box. With a stable base, they’re capable of handling weightlifting sessions with ease but are supportive and cushioned enough to hit the tread or the pavement for some cardio, too. These cross-training shoes are particularly great for HIIT workouts or to pop in your travel pack (or wear to the airport) as your go-to shoe while on vacation thanks to the sheer number of activities they’re capable of tackling. Think of them as a veritable Swiss Army Knife in shoe form.Best Workout Shoes for CrossFit: Nike Metcon 9NikeMetcon 9AccordionItemContainerButtonProsLocked-in feelStable platformConsBreathability could be betterNike’s Metcon series is a perpetual beast in the gym, and the 9 continues to improve upon the shoe's near perfection. With a stable platform that lends itself to intense lifting sessions while still being good enough for quick sprints, the Metcon (not to be confused with the Nike Free Metcon, built for cardio) is exceptionally well-suited to tackling functional training and CrossFit activities. They’re great for general lifting, too, as the lace-lock system keeps everything out of the way. Most importantly, your foot feels stable, secure, and in place, with strong durability to match whatever a session throws at you—all without having to throw in some extra insoles in there.Best Workout Shoes for the Gym: NoBull Outwork EdgeThe NoBull Outwork Edge is perhaps the grippiest option on this list. Thanks to a herringbone-style pattern that allows for intense traction on all kinds of surfaces, these shoes are great for strength training. While some gym rats swear by cheap Converse, they’ll get a kick out of how much more stable they'll feel when they lace up in these. The flat sole ensures constant, even contact with the floor, and they’re almost as comfortable as being barefoot (almost).Best Squat Shoes: TYR L-2 LifterLove hitting Tom Platz-esque leg days? These L-2 squat shoes (aka weightlifting shoes) from TYR are your best bet—they're the new and improved version of the L-1s, which won a GQ Fitness Award last year. “For the price of a brutal bar tab, you’re looking at a windfall of benefits to your squat and leg development that you wouldn’t get squatting barefoot or in flats,” GQ senior commerce editor Ian Burke says about the first iteration. “If you have trouble hitting depth on a squat, have ankle mobility issues, or want to target your quads more by putting them in a more stretched position in the hole, you’ll love squatting in a heel. If you have wide feet or just want a well-made squat shoe trusted by some of the world’s best squatters, you can’t go wrong with these. And anecdotally, squatting in these shoes changed my entire leg day experience—I used to squat barefoot, but when I made the switch to heels, my legs blew up, my numbers rose, and the nagging shin pain I had for years while squatting finally went away.”Best Workout Shoes for Lifting: Vivobarefoot Motus StrengthVivobarefootMotus StrengthFew shoes are as likely to elicit a “What are those!” on the streets as a pair of Vivobarefoots. In the gym? Well, seeing a dude rocking these is a sure sign that this guy's about to get low and break a new PR. The Motus Strengths are about as close to lifting barefoot as possible but with the bells and whistles that'll keep him on his feet when he's lifting overhead. The sole is super responsive so you can get a full-body feel for your movements, and with the high midfoot sidewalls, you can get into cross training during the same lifting sesh. It's grippy, it's stable, and it's a damn great shoe for going beast mode at the gym.Best Workout Shoes for Running: Brooks Ghost 16BrooksGhost 16AccordionItemContainerButtonProsComfortableDurableSupportive without being overly cushionyConsSome bolder colorways would be coolGQ contributor Tanner Bowden said this of the Ghost 16 in his review, “If you're in need of a regular old running shoe, the Ghost is proof that, even in the era of super trainers, excellence doesn't have to mean fancy features.” That’s a bang-on summation of why we love the Ghost 16 as a good running workout shoe. If you’re hitting the tread for a run, the Ghost is extremely well-suited for easy miles, something that can disappear into the background as you put one foot in front of the other.Best Workout Shoes for Trail Running: Arc’teryx Norvan LD 4 GTXArc'teryxNorvan LD 4 GTX Trail Running ShoesLeave it to the experts from one of the best outdoor brands in the world to engineer one of the best trail runners, too. The Arc’Teryx Norvan LD 4 GTX is your first and last stop when it comes to hitting the trail thanks to Gore-Tex upper and a textured, 4mm lug pattern Vibram sole that provides the perfect grip for any surface you’ll come across while running. Breathable and supportive, your feet will stay cool without overheating. Everything you could possibly want or need to hit the dirt is here in one striking package, now it’s just up to you to put one foot in front of the other.Best Workout Shoes for Pickleball: Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 6

While browsing through Reddit looking for a new m/m romance to read, I saw someone describe one of the main characters of Heat Stroke by Tessa Bailey as a “muscular himbo puppy who dotes on his love interest.” While I haven’t read anything from Tessa Bailey previously, I am 100% into the doting character trope. Because of this, I decided to take a chance and picked up this book to see if it lived up to this particular user’s description.
Official Summary: They can't be together. They won't stay apart. Marcus “Diesel” O’Shaughnessy is a brash, oversized CrossFit enthusiast with a naked lady tattooed on his rippling forearm. Jamie Prince is a private school teacher with an extremely low tolerance for bull. The two men have zero in common. Well, except for three things. They’re both moonlighting as lifeguards for the summer. No matter how hard they try, they cannot stay away from each other. And both of them have secrets they’re determined to keep. But what happens in the shadows of the Long Beach boardwalk can only remain hidden for so long, before the July sunshine reveals the hot, unrelenting connection they never expected, forcing Marcus and Jamie to decide if they’re simply caught up in a temporary heat stroke or if they’ve found something worth rescuing... Published: March 15, 2019 Genre: Romance, M/M Romance, Contemporary Romance
Heat Stroke is the second book of the Beach Kingdom series. While I jumped straight into Book Two I felt nothing of importance was lost for context. The series follows the three Prince brothers: Andrew, Jamie, and Rory who all own a bar and man the lifeguard stations in Long Beach. Each book of the series follows one of the brothers’ relationships. The two other books of this series feature m/f relationships while Heat Stroke is the only m/m.
In Heat Stroke we follow Jamie Prince, an economics teacher who returns home to help his brothers with the family business during the summer months. Amidst his busy schedule, he contends with Marcus, a muscular workout enthusiast who has taken it upon himself to shadow Jamie everywhere for the past three summers. Hello stalking!
In the opening pages, we receive several mixed signals from our main character Jamie. He clearly knows Marcus is very much in denial about being in the closet, and Jamie has several lines stating just why he doesn’t want to deal with men like that, including a predictable plot point that is repeatedly mentioned before we are given the obvious reveal. However the book had 225 pages and this was all from the first few, establishing that he most certainly wasn’t going to live up to his own rules.
While Marcus does fit several of the himbo traits, he's lacking in what makes this character archetype stand out. A himbo is more than a dumb character. Himbos are friendly, loving, and protective of those they care about. They’re confident in themselves and their place in the world all the while sporting abs that can grate cheese. In my opinion, the himbo archetype is often misattributed to characters who are in actuality just a dumb jock. Marcus is just a dumb jock.
Marcus’s introduction with Jamie in this book is far from love at first sight. In fact Marcus seems to be making fun of Jamie more than anything (not protecting from the very getgo). Marcus flaunts his body at every occasion as if this is his sole defining trait. Further, the narrative stresses how “dumb” Marcus is by telling the reader he dropped out of college because he followed the sample schedule instead of his own actual schedule. Compounded with the naked lady tattoo constantly mentioned on Marcus’s forearm, he’s billed as a hyper-masculine “bro” who’s constantly contending with gay intrusive thoughts he’s incapable of processing because he’s written as being “too dumb” to handle them in a mature, adult manner. The story follows Jamie and Marcus as they navigate a pseudo-friendship. On one side, we have Marcus the self-proclaimed straight guy who thinks jacking off to the image of another guy's mouth is “just what guys do.” Then there’s “high IQ” Jamie, the so-called smartest man in the room, who heeds none of the warning signs of a path that he's already gone down previously.
The two seemed to be thrown together more out of Jamie feeling bad for Marcus and not wanting to upset him than any sense of love forming between the two. Over and over, the narrative forces these characters to interact rather than allowing their relationship to grow organically over time.
The story fell into the predictable path of Marcus dealing with internalized homophobia from potential external sources we’re told Marcus is afraid of rather than shown in a scene. There are a few weak examples displaying the masculine pressure Marcus faces. We’re told that getting the girl and getting laid should be his priorities, but there’s only one instance of this having any real weight during a conversation between Marcus and his fellow gym bros. Because there’s no further pressure on Marcus beyond this one instance (the characters never show up again), this causes the subplot to fall flat. In fact, most of Marcus’s fears seem contrived more than anything, like the story and the author is holding him back from becoming a fully realized character.
While there are “spicy” scenes in this story, several of them include clunky dialogue that is distracting for the reader. You know how people talk about cringey euphemisms for body parts? Well this story has more than a few. I think the point of no return for me was after Jamie said the line, “You ready to feel my fuck, baby?” I know there are only so many things to call body parts, but really? The author couldn’t use the old faithful just to keep us in the scene? Mileage may vary on what euphemisms or “dirty talk” works for you as a reader, but the use of this line more than once was egregious and ruined the scene completely for me.
The opening line of this book was, “God save him from confused straight guys.” I thought this was an eye-catching opener, but the book didn’t live up to this singular line. I really wish Jamie would have received some help from the nightmare I’ve described above, as he did not deserve to go through the amount of needless drama riddled within this story.
The third act break up was completely unnecessary and thrown in as if something had to fill those later pages. The ending couldn’t come soon enough, but it somehow felt rushed as if the author couldn’t wait to return to familiar m/f territory.
While there were a lot of things I found unenjoyable about this novel, I did find the occasional line of dialogue humorous. But there simply isn’t enough here to make it worth your while. There are plenty of other novels to read out there that treat these subjects with a little more tact and maturity, even while being comical. After reading Heat Stroke, I feel as though the author treated m/m romance in a very juvenile manner.
Overall, only pick this book up if it's free from your local library. Only subject yourself to this story if you want to learn what not to do with these tropes.

How To Choose Best Used Olympic Weight Plates
When looking to add Olympic weight plates to your gym setup, buying used options can be a great way to save money without sacrificing quality. Olympic weight plates, typically used with Olympic barbells, are designed with a 2-inch hole in the center and come in different sizes and materials. Purchasing used plates can significantly lower the cost compared to buying new ones, but it requires some careful consideration to ensure you're getting the best value for your money. Here's a detailed guide on how to choose the best used Olympic weight plates.

1. Understand the Types of Olympic Weight Plates
Before diving into the process of choosing used Olympic weight plates, it's important to understand the different types available:
Standard Weight Plates: These are the basic plates you’ll find, often made of cast iron or steel. They are simple and functional but can rust over time.
Rubber-Coated Weight Plates: These plates are coated with rubber or urethane to reduce noise and protect the floor. They also tend to be more durable, especially in commercial settings.
Bumper Plates: Designed primarily for Olympic lifting, bumper plates are made of dense rubber or urethane. They are designed to be dropped from overhead without damaging the plate or the floor, making them ideal for those who perform movements like cleans and snatches.
Competition Bumper Plates: These are high-quality bumper plates used in professional competitions. They are typically made from high-density rubber and are color-coded for easy identification of weight.
Knowing the type of plate you need is essential because it will affect the overall weight distribution, durability, and sound of your lifts. For example, if you are primarily doing powerlifting, traditional cast iron or steel plates may suffice. However, if you are doing Olympic lifts or CrossFit, bumper plates or rubber-coated plates may be better suited for your needs.
2. Inspect the Condition
When buying used Olympic weight plates, the condition is the most important factor to consider. Poor condition can lead to damage to your floors, your barbell, or even injuries if the plates aren’t properly maintained. Here are some aspects to inspect:
Rust and Corrosion: One of the first things you should look for is rust or corrosion. Cast iron plates are prone to rusting, especially if they've been stored in damp conditions. While a little surface rust may not be a deal-breaker, excessive corrosion can weaken the plate and cause it to deteriorate over time. For rubber-coated or bumper plates, check if the rubber is intact and free from cracks.
Chips or Cracks: Rubber-coated or bumper plates may experience chips or cracks from being dropped or mishandled. Inspect the edges and surface to make sure they haven’t taken any significant damage. A cracked bumper plate, for example, will likely fail after repeated use.
Deformities: Over time, heavy use can lead to the deformation of weight plates. This is most common in bumper plates, where repeated impact can cause the plate to become slightly misshapen. A deformed plate may not sit correctly on the barbell and could affect your lifting performance or even cause imbalance and injury.
Wear and Tear: Examine the edges and center hole of the plates for any noticeable wear and tear. The hole where the barbell sleeve fits should not be overly worn out, as this could cause the plate to slip off during lifts.
3. Consider the Brand
Not all weight plates are created equal, and the brand can make a big difference in terms of quality, durability, and reliability. Well-known brands that are respected in the fitness community for their high-quality Olympic weight plates include:
Rogue Fitness: Known for its durable bumper plates and high-quality cast iron plates, Rogue has earned a reputation for producing reliable gym equipment.
Titan Fitness: Offering a range of affordable plates, Titan is popular for those on a budget but still looking for quality.
Ivanko: A premium brand that produces some of the most precise and durable weight plates available.
Rep Fitness: Known for offering good value and quality, Rep’s bumper plates and iron plates are highly regarded.
When buying used plates, it's generally a good idea to stick with trusted brands. This is because reputable brands tend to use higher-quality materials and manufacturing processes, which ensures that the plates will last longer and perform better even when bought and used.
4. Price and Value
The primary reason many people opt for used weight plates is to save money. However, don’t assume that used plates are automatically a great deal. Take the time to research the market price for new and used plates to ensure you’re getting a fair deal.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Discount: When buying used, you should expect a price that is lower than new prices. Typically, used plates can be priced at 30% to 50% off retail, depending on their condition and brand.
Negotiation: When buying from an individual seller or through classified ads, there’s often room to negotiate the price, especially if the plates are worn or damaged in any way.
Cost of Shipping: If you’re buying used plates online, shipping costs can quickly add up, especially for heavier plates. If possible, try to buy plates locally to save on shipping fees.
5. Verify Weight and Dimensions
Olympic weight plates come in standard increments, with weights typically ranging from 2.5 lbs to 45 lbs (1.25 kg to 20 kg). Make sure the plates you are buying match the standard Olympic sizes and weights. While this may seem like a no-brainer, some used plates, especially older models, may be mislabeled or vary slightly in weight due to wear and tear.
If you can, verify the weight and size of the plates before purchasing, especially if you are buying in bulk. Sometimes sellers will sell plates as a set (e.g., a 300 lb set), but they may not include the exact weight distribution you need for your training regimen.
6. Compatibility with Your Barbell
Most Olympic weight plates have a 2-inch hole to fit an Olympic barbell. However, it's worth checking the hole diameter to ensure compatibility with your specific barbell. Some weight plates have slightly different hole sizes due to wear or poor manufacturing, which can cause issues with fitting them onto your bar.
7. Consider the Aesthetic and Storage Needs
While functionality is the most important aspect when choosing Olympic weight plates, some buyers also prefer aesthetically pleasing equipment for their home gyms. This is especially true if your gym setup is in a visible space. For example, rubber-coated plates or bumper plates tend to look nicer and may match your existing gym equipment better than standard cast iron plates.
Additionally, consider how much space you have for storage. Plates are heavy and take up a fair amount of room, so you’ll need a dedicated area to store them. Some buyers also purchase weight plate trees or racks to keep their plates organized and off the floor.
8. Buy from Trusted Sources
To avoid scams or receiving faulty equipment, buy your used weight plates from trusted sources. Online platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and eBay can be great places to find used equipment, but always be cautious. Look for reviews, and if possible, ask to inspect the plates in person before purchasing. Local gyms, fitness centers, and personal trainers may also sell used plates as they upgrade their equipment, so it’s worth checking with them for potential deals.
Conclusion
Choosing the best used Olympic weight plates requires careful attention to detail. Start by understanding the types of plates available and their specific use cases, then inspect the condition, brand, and price to ensure you’re getting good value. Remember to verify the weight and dimensions, check compatibility with your barbell, and consider the aesthetic and storage needs of your gym setup. By following these tips, you can confidently find used Olympic weight plates that suit your needs while saving money.
