It was in her preadolescence that she bullied a tutor into finding a way for her to express her wants and thoughts. Under the guise of religious studies, she had a monk teach her a hand language and then proceeded to insist her entire household learn as well.

It is only in their adulthood that she and Alexandrina have become closer, and out of loyalty, and a hesitant love, she strives to act as a support for the crown.

Diana was the eldest child and only daughter of Reynaldo Sforza, duke of Milan. He was known to be a ruthless and exacting man, a formidable enemy both in negotiations and on the battlefield, and a merciless ruler. Because Diana was his only child until her 12th year, it was her to whom he first passed on all his ambitions, techniques, expectations. He was easy to disappoint, and brutal when it happened, and Diana quickly learned that she would need to be tough, ruthless, even savage to survive her father’s tutelage, to survive in the world, to be impressive, even. And so from a hard-hearted man was born an even harder-hearted daughter.

Diana is calculating, cold, and her decisions are swift and decisive. She is accustomed to getting what she wants, because she learned long ago how to terrorise people into doing what she wants. At the age of 15 the blood of innocents was already on her hands after her father gave her command over a small battalion in his army during their invasion of Genova and she ordered that any civilian they came across were to be slaughtered if they could not run--to send a message. Indeed, at times Diana thinks of herself as invincible, even immortal. 

She never really got on with her brothers-in-law, but since her husband’s death when she made a quick and vicious grab for the regency, things have gotten much worse. They are constantly at each others throats, and because Diana is so unpopular in the court because of how fearsome most of the nobility find her, she has to fight hard and smart to keep her hold on power. Sooner or later, she knows, she will have to take drastic measures to consolidate her power, or risk losing everything she’d worked for since birth. 

AMBITION: to eliminate her brothers-in-law as competition to the throne of Naples, and her blood brother as duke of Milan, so that she can inherit and unite both under her rule.

Louis was born to be king. From the moment he could speak he was taught the art of statecraft and politics, a training which was increased to exceeding rigour at age 5 when his father died, leaving him as the king. Louis was not properly coronated until he was 12 years old, and did not start ruling in his own right until he was 21 (when he wrested power from his mother and the Prime Minister). However, he was an active participant in politics from a young age, mostly because he was needed as the figurehead for the regency, but also because the Prime Minister Mazarin saw the opportunity to impress his political philosophy of an absolute monarchy in the young boy. Louis was, essentially carefully crafted into the kind of man capable and desirous of taking any and all decisions as his personal responsibility, but smart enough to know that he needed to listen to experts on specific topics before taking his decisions. 

Now Louis commands one of the most fearsome armies in the world, his court is the most splendid and glamourous, at once consisting of the height of entertainment, boasting the best artists and brightest intellects of the age, and is so utterly focused on his person and his will that there can be no question of spies and insurrection. Louis is incredibly proud of his kingdom, and of himself. He wants everyone to consider himself and France the best in the world, because, as per him, that was truth. He is not a blundering fool, though. He is calculating, clever, manipulative. Besides which, he knows that France can only be the best as long as he invests in his people and his lands. That being said, his need for self glorification and opulent displays of riches does leave something to be desired in terms of the rationing of wealth.

Louis is an inherently distrustful man who spends all of his time focusing everyone’s attention on himself largely in order to quell the possibilities for dissent amongst his courtiers and politicians. They cannot defy him if they are all in open war with one another for his favour. Though this is certainly a strategem that he was taught or urged towards by Mazarin, one must wonder if his dormant identity does not have something to do with it?

AMBITION: to rule the most glorious court in Europe and conquer all of his adversaries in order to become the new Emperor.

William, of course, came from a family of high nobility who held titles to lands in and around Derbyshire. He grew up in the chilly, coarse North of England on the wild and frigid moors. He loved the nature as a child, and was always very active. As the eldest son in his family, he had the best tutelage that his parents could offer him, and was expected to master the 7 liberal arts like any good young noble. As his parents groomed him more and more intensely during his adolescence to make a good marriage and a better ruler, he became increasingly more taciturn, discerning, studious, and judgemental. No, he never forgot his love of outdoor activities and continued to practice them regularly, but he gave increasing weight to serious matters of politics as well. Oftentimes, he was known only to smile in his teen years whenever he was with his sister, Cecilia, of whom he had always been quite fond, enabling, and encouraging.

William was a son any parent would be proud of, well versed in the liberal arts, politically aware, a brilliant tactician, and a master of the sword. Everything recommended him from his birth to his personality. Doubtless, these qualities were to thank for his having been introduced to the young heir apparent, Alexandrina. Though William was nigh impossible to please, quick to judge, and prone to silence when faced with social situations, Alexandrina drew him very much out of his shell. He fell madly in love with her from the first moment he perceived her wisdom and sound mind, which only accredited her great beauty in his opinion. When he was around her, the hard lines of his solitary and sullen personality smoothed; he smiled easily, grew comfortable, opened up. Their love burned hard, and seemed that it was going to last--that they would be some of the lucky ones who married happily and advantageously.

But when Alexandrina inherited the throne things went sideways. William never doubted the brilliance of his wife; indeed, it was one of the traits he found most agreeable in her, one of the reasons they got on so well. Nevertheless, he was more than a little shocked and upset to find that she intended to rule entirely in her own right and without granting William status as her equal, even in title alone--though he had made it more than clear to her on several occasions that he thought that, too, would be a slight. The inequality in their relationship wounded William’s pride, turned him hard and irritable more often than not. The stability and love that had once existed between them soured as William disdainfully watched his wife publicly subjugate him and place herself above him. 

In spite of his frustration with his marriage, William has never neglected his royal duties nor made public spectacle of their private disagreements. He carries out his duties to perfection and makes every show of supporting his wife in all she does. Indeed, deep inside--hidden somewhere where he won’t have to consciously acknowledge it very often--he is extremely proud of Alexandrina and everything she accomplishes. He remains exceedingly fond of her, and retains the greatest respect for her, even if he doubts her respect for him completely.  

AMBITION: to fix his marriage and help his wife create the Empire he knows she deserves to rule.
