Arsenal news: Dani Ceballos is a midfield anarchist who could cause havoc against Tottenham
It wasn't long before Dani Ceballos Arsenal won supporters. An hour in his home debut and robbed Burnley Johann Gudmundsson and played in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the winner. The Emirates felt that this could be the start of something special.
Wind his career clock back about seven years on the day he was discovered by the Spanish club Betis and the story of immediate impact is very similar.
Betis scout Aurelio Santos had turned up in a regional competition under the age of 16 to watch two opposite full-backs, when a distant midfield he knew nothing had stolen the show.
Dani Ceballos has impressed Arsenal fans since giving Real Madrid on loan
The midfielder is an all- player and can create something out of nothing [1945907]
Only 15 minutes into the game he called his assistant to see if the name & # 39; Ceb allos & # 39; atabase appeared in the huge d of the club but there was no trace.
"He did absolutely everything that day," Santos told Sportsmail. "He won a penalty, he took the penalty, and when it was saved, he ran to pick up the ball before sprinting to the next corner. He was hyperactive. We knew we had to have it. & # 39;
Santos asked the team at Ceballos, Utrera, if he could come for a trial. The next fight was to make sure Real Madrid and Barcelona didn't take him away.
& # 39; We could not play the game on our own training field and we chose players for the following season, so there was a lot of talent on display there. Real Madrid and Barcelona were watching.
"We took Dani away for the break. The decision was made. We didn't have to see anything anymore.
"I spoke to him after the game and he was with one of his teammates. He said, "I'm going to get started because you obviously don't want me."
Ceballos distinguished himself from the Real Betis scouts and he never has a lack of confidence
& He thought we were not interested because we had dropped him off. I had to tell him: “No, we want you. We just didn't want anyone else to see you! ""
As a teenager, Ceballos had no lack of self-confidence. He had a famous sports brand swoosh shaved in the side of his head and was therefore nicknamed & # 39; Dani Nike & # 39 ;.
In one of his first contract negotiations, he asked for the number 10 shirt, as worn by Ronaldinho, to be part of his new deal.
But the story of Santos also highlights some doubt about himself. He was released by Sevilla as a 13-year-old after five years at the club. He had felt that a second chance was also lost in that trial competition.
Ceballos signed for Betis and first earned around 60 euros a month just to cover travel expenses. He made his first team debut within a year.
If Santos did not see him, life might have brought him much further than Utrera, the inland Andalusian municipality famous for Flamenco, the Spanish fighting bull & # 39; Toro Bravo & # 39; & # 39; and another former Arsenal player Jose Antonio Reyes.
But he was now in the big time. His Betis to support parents who owned a & # 39; churros & # 39; stand where they sold the traditional sugary, doughy, deep-fried snack, were the most proud in Andalusia.
The former managers of Ceballos talk about him as an & # 39; special & child with a modest background and someone who, without academic football, still had the soul of a street player in those formative years.
The electric blonde hair and combative style was something that Betis fans came to appreciate
The word & # 39; anarchic & # 39; turns up a lot when he talks with his former coaches.
Pepe Mel built his second division-promotion winning Betis team around the 18-year-old Ceballos in the 2014-15 season.
Gus Poyet would lead him in the first division in the 2016-17 campaign, but with less success.
Honey remembers: & # 39; You had to be on top of it. He had to feel important. In the beginning it was difficult to learn tactically because of that street football spirit. He is an intuitive player. & # 39;
When Poyet took over, it seemed that he would be an important part of the team. He has adjusted his system to get him more in the area and he scored goals.
"But you have to make him the protagonist," he says. "When Dani has the responsibility to have the ball, bear the weight of the team, get close to the area and create opportunities," then you get the best from him. "
Several managers realized that Ceballos needs a certain amount of freedom in a system to thrive
With another star turns to the side that was not possible and Poyet ended up leaving Ceballos.
Then Victor Sanchez del Amo Poyet replaced w the team arranged, but Ceballos flourished. He won under 21 euros with Spain that summer and had him chased by both Real Madrid and Barcelona.
He had grown up on the field and off, although a number of unpleasant tweets were posted when he was only 16 in 2012 came back to pursue him.
In one, he had criticized Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao supporters who shouted the Spanish national anthem at the final of Copa del Rey and said that a & # 39; bomb would fall on Camp Nou & # 39 ;.
Betis had worked to keep him from the problems of the field. Manolo Nieto was the player's press officer and part of his job in the early days was to teach him that social media were not the place to express any personal opinion or private joke that his head might express.
They remained in close contact after Ceballos left the club.
In Real Madrid, Ceballos made an impression when he got the chance, but got out the grace
He has been excellent for Spain by age group and has helped the Euro U21 crown
When you talk to Nieto, you notice that he would rather have seen Ceballos go to Barcelona when he left Betis.
But instead he moved to Madrid, where Zinedine Zidane didn't feel like making room for a rookie maverick in his team.
& # 39; With Zidane it is the holy cows that count, now look at the team, & # 39; Nieto says.
Ceballos dropped out with Zidane over limited playing time despite good performance in choosing, and when Zidane returned to the club in March, it was clear that Ceballos would have to leave.
Florentine Perez, the club's president, insisted on a loan agreement, meaning that Sunday's opponents Tottenham, who only wanted to buy him outright, lost him to Arsenal.
The question now is how it should go in the Premier League under Unai Emery.
His former coaches, his good friend Nieto and the scout who discovered him are all positive.
& # 39; Unai is a good coach for him & # 39 ;, says Mel. & # 39; There is a logic in the anarchy that you get from Dani & # 39 ;, Nieto adds. Emery understands that logic. Football is nowadays planned to the last millimeter. Someone has to do something improvised. Dani gives you that. & # 39;
Poyet agrees: & # 39; I think he gives Arsenal something they didn't have before & he says. "He connects with [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and [Alexandre] Lacazette and technically he is very good.
" The best I have seen him play was for Spain under 21 when you have nine players with nine players have been very positive and he goes where he wants. & # 39;
the Spaniard Maria Sanchez del Moral (right) will help him learn English
Off the field, Nieto is sure he is ready for London. Reyes made a mini-Seville of his house in Cockfosters and never settled in England.
Nieto points out, Ceballos has arrived older and more experienced.
& # 39; His girlfriend [María Sánchez del Moral, a qualified primary school teacher] will try to help him learn the language. He is an open person, he will give everything & he says.
Arsenal who buys it outright may depend on appearances in competitions like today – Emery wants some of that Ceballos anarchy but not too much.
Santos, the man who first saw him, prefers to call it & # 39; blessed disorder & # 39 ;. "It is still the most sought after ingredient of football," he says.
