I was just doodling some Martyn fanart (as you do) when I came up with an AU idea.

I’m obsessed with Datastream Defender Martyn and I thought it would be cool if one of the games he goes into is an SCP inspired game like Containment Breach!

Anyway I’m trying to decide if I should make him a scientist or soldier in the foundation so I made quick doodle of both and wanted to ask what ya’ll think (this aren’t the final designs by the way)

Treebarkweek Day 7: Captain / King

I did have a longer fic I was writing for this prompt, but it is not finished yet, so I'll finish it at a later date. This came to me while I was busy this weekend and I wrote it basically in a trance. Most definitely inspired by Lythecreator's comic here. I told you I missed my Pi-Rats! Canon Compliant (like a deleted scene, almost); Rats 2 SMP; Treebark/Pi-Rats; Datastream Defender Lore; Light Existentialism, just in case (in which Martyn notes that Jacque's in-game 'avatar' doesn't have a heartbeat or breathing sounds); Angst with Little Comfort

Sometimes, in the dark hours of the attic, Mratyn would find his way up into the bedroom he and the Captain shared. The rat-- no, the human-- would find the idea of sleep... comforting. Familiar. He didn't get to sleep in the Datastream. He hardly could pretend to sleep there, what with how alien it all felt. In these worlds, though? Mratyn— Martyn— could actually get some sleep.

On a night, where the Captain was out cold for the second day in a row, Martyn padded his way up the stairs into their shared bedroom. Sleeping and snoring away in bed anywhere. The lights hardly streaked through right now, so everything was dimmed somewhat comforting. Martyn shook his head at the sight of Jacque. Telling himself he was annoyed at the display, Martyn eased his way over.

"Sleeping, always sleeping, Captain," Martyn muttered as he stood at the foot of the bed. "Sometimes... I wonder if it's just because your AI can't function at all times, or if you're a Player, with a life outside of this game. You sure don't play like you're one."

He laughed softly, and Jacque hardly snuffled at the sound. "If you're a Player, you're a ridiculous one, mate. The way you act and talk... it can't be that you're..."

He trailed off, staring. Jacque didn't stir. Martyn moved then, crawling into bed at Jacque's side. Jacque didn't even snuffle. Martyn curled up with his tail over his bottom paws, watching Jacque snore his way through a dream. The human was silent for a time, just watching the avatar (NPC?) sleep the time away.

"I wonder what you're like on the other side of the screen, if you're real, Captain. What do you find fun about this game, I wonder. The story? The adventure? Maybe the characters. What..." He took a shaky breath in. "What do you think of me? Do you think I'm... I'm just like you?"

No response. Martyn rubbed his short snout with a watery sigh. It was unfair, it was. Watching Jacque sleep and not worry about anything; Martyn could call it jealousy, if he could muster up the energy to act like it. But with the Captain resting so peacefully, Martyn could only help but feel wistful of all things. He looked comfortable laying there among the fluffy pillows and cloth blanket. Despite his better judgement, Martyn laid down next to Jacque, shuffling until his large ear rested on the pi-rat's chest.

No sound. Nothing. Not even a hum. The avatar had no need to simulate breathing sounds or a heartbeat, because the Player didn't hear it from their side of the screen. How disappointing, and how hollow it made Martyn's stomach feel. Even now, he was denied a miniscule piece of connection.

Still, Martyn curled up closer to the one thing that was keeping him anchored in the attic, in the stupid game he was in. All because he couldn't let Jacque go.

"Some friend I am, if you're trying to find a way to message me. I can't let you get to know me. I can't let us get too close, in case they find you too."

But... he could let himself have this. Just until he had to go.

"...Goodnight, Captain." Martyn's eye closed, and sleep never felt so real.

I can’t help but think of v!Martyn (who I still don’t know will be in cowboySMP or not) still think Ren is an npc and doing a confession booth about being stuck in datastream and part of him still guilty of what he do, and the deepest one of his confession is his guilt of leaving Captain behind in Rats 2

The ratchanting divorce isn't gonna happen because, Ren is overly friendly/trusting & doesn't know what the word "no" means and Martyn doesn't ever communicate his feelings/thoughts about anything that bothers him(because gods forbid we have healthy communications in minecraft smps/j)

It's gonna happen because Martyn was never even supposed to come back to the rats world in the first place and even so he still has a mission given to him to complete and at the end of every mission he has to leave the world he completed it in. So even if it wasn't rats but another world where everything played out exactly the same, the ultimate outcome of the situation would have been the same, that's just how it's supposed to be. No matter how long he has stayed there, no matter how attached he gets to everyone he meets, he still has to leave it all behind if he wants to make it back to his own world/reality(<<<idk???)

So in short, it was always gonna happen but it is only now hitting us all cause it's happening right now and it's as sad & angsty as we could have predicted

very random lore thought that probably isn't anything: what if the datastream is, or is somehow inside of, life series!martyn?

we know they're somehow connected. even in the vtuber debut trailer, that's shown – last life!martyn is falling through the void, and is touched by a being which, from limited life's ending, we can assume to be a listener. martyn's eyes open, filled with light and tinged listener-yellow... and we find ourselves in the 'real world', with martyn encountering doc right afterwards. we also know the fourth chapter of his lore is called 'fragment wars'... which gave birth to this train of thought.

what if the LOOT shards and sites of conflict around them are (smaller) fragments, or locations of potential fragments, in life series!martyn's soul – not the ones from the games, since those are too large and caused by too traumatic of an event, but the ones caused by smaller conflicts between watchers and listeners? CHEST is a representation of the watchers' influence, and have a much stronger hold on the Datastream (aka on martyn), whereas Doc is a listener agent – probably a representation within martyn's mind of the listener that touched life!martyn in the void, causing him to awaken in the trailer. this means that, with his help, datastream!martyn is trying to fight the watcher influence within himself/life!martyn, and potentially trying to prevent more of his soul from fracturing, too (protecting fragments). these are the 'fragment wars', taking place both within the datastream and life!martyn.

(and re doc and listeners, both are entities that, though what they're doing seems 'good'/beneficial, there's no actual evidence for this – and cc!martyn has mentioned this as well, for both entities independently.)

other evidence/additions:

martyn has said he's left the lore open enough so any amount of series could be happening at any one time without disrupting anything, and this would fit that criteria. multiple conflicts within life!martyn can be happening at the same time.

the obvious: purple LOOT shards, watchers are associated with purple (fragments are also tinged purple BUT that could also be because we see them in the watchers' domain, in which everything is tinged purple). by itself this wouldn't be too much of a coincidence, but since we know the lore is connected, it's more likely it's not.

CHEST is a large megacorporation that has a lot of influence over game worlds – this does match up to the watchers, which re martyn's lore do watch over/have a hold over all minecraft servers. ie, multiple game worlds are being looked over (and influenced) by both.

doc's words in this ask: "You know as well as I do that C.H.E.S.T have cameras EVERYWHERE". cameras as in... they're Watching everything? every one of their game worlds?

this would explain why datastream!martyn wouldn't recognise ren, grian etc as repeating presences in worlds he encounters – as datastream!martyn, he hasn't encountered them before. the life series doesn't take place in the datastream, but completely outside of it – therefore, he's never met them before. datastream!martyn at least seems to think he had a full life before falling into the datastream, with memories that probably don't include anyone from the life series at all.

not evidence, but it would be quite nicely meta, considering minecraft!martyn is literally data (and in a way even the image of martyn we see as viewers is, though obviously he's a real person). the concept of the watchers was originally very meta as well – they're representative of the audience – so it wouldn't be something that hasn't been done with aspects related to this lore before!

evidence against:

mainly, the world datastream!martyn comes from seems to be our world – in addition to how it's presented, we also know time in the datastream passes at the same rate as time in our world, we know datastream!martyn keeps up with news from that world, etc. this could be hard to reconcile with the idea that it's representative of life!martyn's consciousness, and can't really be explained by the fact he datastream!martyn was made to think this world existed.

why are there different game worlds? how does this relate to anything here?

overall, i'm not sure how strong this theory is – it explains some things, but not others, and seems to fit in with the life series lore a lot more than the wider datastream lore and context. but it's not out of the realm of possibility, and very interesting to consider!

Treebarkweek Day 3: Steal / Struck

In which Martyn, while sulking in the Datastream, realizes he’s love struck with a character model that keeps appearing in the games he’s exploring. Not that he’s happy about it, nor will he admit to anyone!

I struggled with this prompt (can probably tell where I got fatigued by it haha), but it was nice to draw something a little more silly! I also haven’t drawn DSD!Martyn in a while, so a win-win for me!

I like to think that the smartest rat in the entire attic was garbage rat aka Oli.

He can write both human as rat, read both as well, says he has a psychology degree, is well traveled and has alot of knowledge a rat really shouldn't have, he's also smart enough to not live in the house and has adapted to live off the stuff humans don't even want so the likelihood of him in theory getting caught would be 0.

I get that that's just oli being oli but it is so funny to me to think he could solve so many problems but just doesn't because he has his own agenda.

Omg I love this so much..

I raise you to c!Oli not only not being an npc but also being fully aware of what goes on. Not only being a world hopper but also knowing about C.H.E.S.T and L.O.O.T shards and everything. But with a datastream defender in seemingly all the worlds Oli goes to, he can't say shit for fear of Martyn being hurt.
