The British Columbia government is moving to protect more old-growth forests and critical habitat with a type of crowd-source funding.

Premier David Eby says the government will work with the independent B.C. Parks Foundation and First Nations to introduce the funding tool that backs efforts to protect valuable ecosystems. Eby says the province will contribute $150 million to a conservation funding mechanism that will be matched by a B.C. Parks Foundation commitment.

The government says the $150 million provided by the province will leverage further donations in a crowd-sourcing approach, encouraging other organizations and people to contribute to ecosystem protection.

In B.C.’s counter-actions, the BC Liquor Distribution Branch has been directed to immediately stop buying American liquor from “red states”. Additionally, BC liquor stores with existing products on the shelves from “red states” have been directed to remove products from the shelves.

The investigation is a sharp turn from the government's position last week when it twice declined to investigate the company in the legislature despite calls from opposing parties.

Premier David Eby, being in government, is a bastard. I don't like the greenwashing of LNG (and the fracking that comes with it), the new involuntary "care" plan, or many other things out of the provincial government. But before Eby became the premier, king bastard of the province, he was a lawyer. More specifically, he worked for the BC Civil Liberties Association, and he wrote a book you absolutely should read (or at least his name is on the cover). It's called the arrest handbook, and like the name implies, it's how to get arrested, how not to get arrested, and what to do if you get arrested. Before you go to an action you should be damn sure wether you're planning to get arrested and wether you're willing to get arrested. In any case, you shouldn't talk to police (more than the "am I free to go" to see if you're being detained and the required basic info if you're driving or after you get arrested), and you should read the damn book, or at least the pocketbook version, both available as pdf on the BCCLA website. Fuck the police, stay safe, keep your comrades safe. And don't peace police other protesters. See you on the streets!

A letter sent by from federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to British Columbia Premier David Eby, asking him to help halt a federal carbon price increase, was dismissed by Eby as a “baloney factory” campaign tactic.

Poilievre’s letter sent Friday asked Eby to join seven other premiers in opposing the April 1 increase, saying the 23 per cent rise amounts to an extra 18 cents on a litre of fuel, and people in B.C. and Canadians can’t afford it.

"In a historic “first-of-its-kind” agreement the government of British Colombia has acknowledged the aboriginal ownership of 200 islands off the west coast of Canada.

The owners are the Haida nation, and rather than the Canadian government giving something to a First Nation, the agreement admits that the “Xhaaidlagha Gwaayaai” or the “islands at the end of world,” always belonged to them, a subtle yet powerful difference in the wording of First Nations negotiating.

BC Premier David Eby called the treaty “long overdue” and once signed, will clear the way for half a million hectares (1.3 million acres) of land to be managed by the Haida.

Postal service, shipping lanes, school and community services, private property rights, and local government jurisdiction, will all be unaffected by the agreement, which will essentially outline that the Haida decide what to do with the 200 or so islands and islets.

“We could be facing each other in a courtroom, we could have been fighting each other for years and years, but we chose a different path,” said Minister of Indigenous Relations of BC, Murray Rankin at the signing ceremony, who added that it took creativity and courage to “create a better world for our children.”

Indeed, making the agreement outside the courts of the formal treaty process reflects a vastly different way of negotiating than has been the norm for Canada.

“This agreement won’t only raise all boats here on Haida Gwaii – increase opportunity and prosperity for the Haida people and for the whole community and for the whole province – but it will also be an example and another way for nations – not just in British Columbia, but right across Canada – to have their title recognized,” said Eby.

In other words, by deciding this outside court, Eby and the province of BC hope to set a new standard for how such land title agreements are struck."
