Clark was staring.
Which wasn't unusual in and of itself; Clark enjoyed things like that, enjoyed looking just for the simple joy of appreciating that which he found beautiful. For someone who had seen so much of the world's horror and ugliness, Clark also possessed the ability to see the good in even the smallest and most unremarkable places.
On their walks through the Manor's garden, he'd watch the bumblebees flit and buzz about the lavender and the yarrow. He'd watch the sunset from the balcony of their bedroom, and the sunrise from between the curtains when they were wrapped in each others arms. He'd watch the push and pull of the ocean's tide when they walked along the beach, hand in hand. He'd watch the stars burn and blaze from a darkened rooftop, when all Bruce could see was the layer of clouds and smog that perpetually covered Gotham's night sky.
Maybe it was another way for him to show how deeply he loved the world and what lived in it. Now, he watched Bruce with that same quiet adoration, the corners of his eyes softly creased with gentle wonder. And...well. Bruce was aware he was staring, too. It was how he'd noticed Clark's eyes on him in the first place.
Bruce was the one to break eye contact, if only to find Clark's hand so he could bring it to his face and kiss the gold band on his ring finger. He leaned back against the pillows and looked up at Clark again.
"What are you thinking about?" Bruce murmured, letting Clark move his hand to caress the line of his jaw, the side of his cheek, skimming upwards to the hair of his temple. A smile bloomed on Clark's face, bright and beautiful.
"Time," Clark said, and Bruce raised an eyebrow.
"Are you calling me old?"
"No," Clark lied. "Though you are going gray."
"I've been going gray for years."
"Yeah," Clark said, running a hand through Bruce's hair, "but I haven't really appreciated it, until now."
Bruce grimaced. "I'm not sure if impending doom is something you should appreciate."
"Pessimist," Clark teased. "It's a sign of all the time we've spent together, the years that have passed and the love we've shared. And it reminds me of all the years we still have left. All the ways we've yet learned how to love."
"Sentimentalist," Bruce shot back, even as he let Clark stroke his hair. Clark sat back and pulled Bruce's legs into his lap, still gazing lovingly at Bruce with that tender smile.
"Well, I think it's beautiful. Don't you?"
Bruce looked at Clark's brilliant smile, the cerulean of his eyes dimmed to a paler blue by his glasses, the near-imperceptible creases between his brows of a man who aged too slowly. Bruce looked at his partner and husband and the love of his life. "It is," he agreed.
my kingdom for more soft superbat fluff 🙏 love your art!

Just read The Strange Case of Harley and Harleen and my god I needed a little bit of positive plurality in my life this week.
The way Pam and Harl's relationship adapts to accept the Harley/Harleen split makes my heart swell.
The way Pam sees the difference between her girlfriends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And assures her that she accepts and loves all sides of her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And does what she can to accommodate Harleen's memory holes.
Tumblr media
The core relationship of this book is just so sweet and positive in accepting things as they are without judgment or pushing. Just acceptance and love.
And after finding that in our own life, I know what a powerfully positive thing it can be.
But the Harley/Harleen relationship is well handled too. There's friction and denial at the start but the two develop and trust one another by the end and Harley takes a seat as my favorite kind of character, the morally ambiguous protector.
I love the way Harley's protectiveness of Harleen is depicted and how she tries so hard to keep her from interacting with the criminal underworld of Gotham.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's just saccharine and kind.
Highly recommend the book to anyone who just wants soft and kind plurality vibes. Heaven knows the majority of the fiction involving split personalities are flooded with angst and darkness and though this book contains a few dark plot beats like DV it never feels painful or sorrow inducing.
I'm so happy I read it.

Every mechanisms song:
*sad viola intro* jonny d’ville: once upon a time, there were two lesbians who were in love and also in space. But the spgovernment (space government) wanted to kill them, and so they were forced to flee.
jessica law (to the tune of old macdonald): oooh baby I love you. I’m so sorry the spgovernment wants to kill us because we committed genocide *drumbot brian starts banging out the tunes* [CHORUS]
jonny d’ville: you see, these two lovers had actually committed genocide.
literally any of the other band members: *slightly higher voice than usual* my dearest, I love you too. I’d do anything to protect you, even sacrifice my life for yours [CHORUS AGAIN]
*worst harmonica you’ve ever heard in your life*
[CHORUS ONE FINAL TIME] (it goes really hard even though it’s still to the tune of old macdonald)
*outro music* jonny d’ville: and then they both died. not even in each others’ arms or anything. yeah it was really depressing
and then it’s the best fucking song you’ve ever heard

interesting post, op - i also have a lot of thoughts on this! disclaimer: i’m not a physicist, and i only have a basic grasp on radiation physics due to it being related to but not my main field of study.
firstly i think that Clark (and affiliated company) are aware it's not actually x-ray vision, but it's a simplified term/misnomer that's become ingrained. also it sounds cool :^) like op explains, x-rays don’t work that way in the real world but to add a few things: (this got long so below the cut)
x-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation like visible light, though they travel at different wavelengths. the human eye can only see a certain range of wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. Clark's eyes aren't human; i can't think of any comics off the top of my head where it's demonstrated, but the DC Database mentions that he can see "well into most of the electromagnetic spectrum". so, theoretically, he can see x-rays in the same way we see light. with some mental acrobatics and application of comic book logic, you could also imagine Clark's eyes as both producing, emitting and absorbing x-ray radiation in order to produce an image in his brain - his eyes would function as both the x-ray machine and the image receptor (the piece of equipment in medical imaging where the image is produced when struck by radiation). but the x-ray photons would still have to travel through the medium he wants to depict, and then back to his eyes for him to actually see the image. x-rays don't naturally behave in a way where that would work, but since this is comics, i imagine he can control the direction of the radiation he emits through telekinesis or something like it. a panel from Superman: Unchained (2013) #1 shows him blasting the engine of a space station with gamma radiation, so according to this comic, he does actually emit electromagnetic radiation with his eyes!
Tumblr media
of course, canon is contradictory at best of times and though i can't find a source, i recall that it has also been mentioned in some other comic that he doesn't emit any actual radiation when using his x-ray vision. i really don't think Clark would go around dosing people with ionizing radiation - the risk connected to the average x-ray examination is very very small but it is there and Bruce especially would be at a higher risk for stochastic effects like radiation induced cancer considering how often Clark goes around “x-raying” him for his absolutely ridiculous amount of injuries, a notion i fully support. also the images produced by x-ray technology is nowhere near accurate enough to produce images in the detail that Clark is shown to discern.
i definitely agree that Kryptonian brains have specific highly evolved anatomical structures that utilize yellow solar energy to translate external stimuli into incredibly accurate information. but i think that any way you spin it, whether it be x-ray radiation or infrasound, you run into the problem that for him to sense things, he needs to receive those signals. sound is vibrations, light is electromagnetic radiation, and we perceive these things when our bodies pick up the stimuli and translate them into information for our brains. how can Clark hear/see something on the other side of the world, instantaneously, without the vibrations or photons actually reaching him?
the thing about comic book physics is that no matter how you try to apply real world physics it will always depend on a degree of suspension of disbelief because our laws of physics simply do not work that way, which most people are aware of. i don't know about anyone else but i don't read comics for the realism, i (usually) like the crazy, impossible shit they come up with even when it makes no sense :') but it’s a fun thought exercise to try to explain it! i’m firmly invested in the hc that the dc universe literally has a different set of laws of physics, or that they’re guidelines and not laws and therefore flexible. in other words, a lot of handwaving.
about lead: yeah there's no way to make this one make sense lol. i think it’s just a convenient weakness that can make for a compelling story element. afaik the only element on Earth (when magic isn't involved) he can't see through is lead, even though there's other elements on our planet that are denser and more effective at blocking radiation than lead (lead is used as radiation shielding because of its high density and atomic number, its stability and availability, and its relatively low cost). there does seem to exist other materials he can't see through elsewhere in the universe, like a Fatherbox from Apokolips in Justice League (2011) #2:
Tumblr media
i also want to mention Superman: Lost (2023), where Clark says that gravity is a factor for his powers. i don't know if this has been mentioned in another comic before. the panel below is from issue #2. this is outside my wheelhouse but it's a really intriguing concept, because gravity is everywhere all the time, and maybe his powers are attuned to gravity in a way that could explain away most or all of his powers! like he's tapping into gravity the way that speedsters tap into the speed force?
Tumblr media
hopefully some of that made sense and correct me if i'm wrong about anything because tbh i detest physics and i am limping my way through the physics portion of my studies 🙃 thanks for sharing, op!
Kryptonian Headcanons//Theories #1
"X-Ray Vision" Is Actually Echolocation.
This is a theory I developed based on the fact that we know Superman can see through concrete, skin, and basically everything besides lead, which is quite curious because that's not how x-rays work.
First, to actually see an image made by x-ray, you would need something to stand behind or under the area you want to scan, so it's not like a photographic camera where the image comes from behind the lenses. Even if Superman had the equipment to picture the image, he would just send the rays and mark everything with bones and whatever.
Now, with the echolocation, however, it makes sense that he would be able to see behind walls and stuff. We know he is capable of producing infrasound with his vocal chords, like we see in Batman/Superman - World's Finest:
Tumblr media
The infrasound he produces goes through tiny holes on the surfaces such as skin (pores) or concrete (windows perhaps) and whenever hitting something, go back to where they came from, reflecting an image made out of sounds.
His Kryptonian brain probably has a specific area made only for translating such sounds into shapes (maybe textures?) and so he knows what's behind something, he "sees" it.
There are still some flaws to this theory, like how I'm not sure how he can't see through lead specifically, but I'll keep updating this as we go. If you wanna add anything, feel free to reply or reblog!

i've said it before but it will forever and always make me insane that jacob's ending is to join the cullens for the sake of bella not having to give anything up. they find out jake will be immortal & tied to renesmee forever, so bella gets to smile & say "my family is finally complete! ^-^" but jake already HAS a family. he has a father and 2 sisters. quil, embry, seth and sam are like his brothers. jacob and leah were planning to run away together. he's always been welcome in emily's home, sue has been a family friend since before his birth. bella abandons her mortality by choice because she feels no connection to the people around her, but jacob has really strong bonds. it's clear that every character we meet in la push is like family to him, he's an active member of the community. jake would've graduated high school and been a mechanic, would've grown into a young man. a good friend, a fun uncle, a present son. he's set up to have such a rich life. and he's just magically compelled to give that up. beyond his control, he loses sight of everything, because his high school crush's baby is now the singular most important thing to him. he's perpetually 18 with his perpetually 18 year old girlfriend, running around vancouver or alaska or wherever with the girl who friendzoned him at 16 & her in-laws (who were antagonistic to him for months). and i'm just supposed to say omg yay now he doesn't have to let go of bella! everyone is happy! it's complete madness

“If you were to ask me what Throne of Glass is about…
I’d say it’s about the epic journey of a teenage assassin in a corrupt kingdom.
But if you were to ask me on a deeper level, I’d say…
It’s about how small acts of kindness can change the outcome of the world.
Money to a barmaid, waiting an extra minute to shoot, a warning in a competition, a cloak in a cold dungeon, a message on a wall, sharing your lavender soap.”

it's nice to have a friend
Tumblr media
big glasses and a bowl cut.
for the bulk of his short life, that was all anyone saw when they looked at zayne.
no one knew much about him, other than how annoying it was when the teachers praised his intelligence. more than a classmate, he was a goalpost. a standard they couldn’t meet.
more often than not, his head was buried in a book. he found it much more worthwhile to study people than to speak to them. so he hid in the shade, away from the constant chatter and blistering heat of recess.
that day in september, he’d been too busy absorbing neatly stacked paragraphs to process the muffled voice above him—until you lightly shook his shoulder.
you’d asked him if he wanted to play. they’d said it was his birthday, after all. but after a long pause and bewildered blush, zayne said no.
the first three times you asked him, zayne said no.
Tumblr media
his answer changed when the leaves did.
in the brisk november air, pushed forward by a gust of wind, he bumped into a rowdy group of older kids. apparently, his murmured apology hadn’t been good enough.
first, they threatened to snap his glasses. shatter the lenses so he couldn’t read anymore.
the wicked sneers and guesses that he was special came after.
through it all, zayne hadn't said a word—he didn't have to.
because before he could decide whether to tell a teacher or walk away, you were blocking him from view as best you could with your shorter frame, glaring at the boys with molten hatred in your heart.
and when their leader snorted and took a step toward you both, you unclenched your fist and scratched him right across the face.
zayne had never been one for violence. his parents told him it never solved anything, and he’d always seen more value in helping people than hurting them.
but the next time you asked him to play, he nodded his head yes.
he was surprisingly good at make-believe—the doctor to your nurse. and when you invited him back the next day, and the next day, and the day after that, zayne felt he’d made his first friend.
Tumblr media
adult zayne still gets teased, sometimes.
for the way he speaks like a nonfiction narrator. for the way he retreats from interactions and rejects invitations. for the way he’s hard to read unless you’re fluent in the language of him.
but with you by his side, he’s learned to pay it no mind.
you like his cadence and his reticence and his rigid kind of softness. you tell him all of it, so he doesn’t have to wonder.
and when the crueler slights wear down the barrier you’ve helped him build, you repeat yourself.
day after day, you save him. just like you did on the playground.
so when zayne finds himself in linkon’s finest jewelry store, browsing through shimmering stones he never thought he’d have a need for, he knows one thing for certain: his first friend is his best.
