The ‘Where Do I Even Start?’ Dilemma
Tumblr media
I have a confession: I’ve been avoiding my backyard because I don’t know what to do with it. It’s not bad, just… uninspired. I want a deck, but then I spiral: What material? What size? Do I need permits? Should it attach to the house or float separately?
Overwhelm led me to Supreme Deck Builders of St. Charles’ Contact page, and I’ll admit—I almost didn’t click. “I’m not ready to talk to anyone!” I whined to my dog. But then I saw they offer free consultations, and something unclenched in my brain. I don’t have to have all the answers. That’s their job.
I haven’t reached out yet (baby steps), but it’s comforting knowing there’s a human I can ask, “Hey, is this insane?” before I accidentally build a deck that violates city code.

Lenexa Dreams
Tumblr media
“Not sure what flipped the switch, but suddenly I need an outdoor living room…”
Maybe it was the way the sun hit the backyard last Saturday. Or maybe it’s just the sheer number of s’mores photos on my feed lately. Either way — I’ve been thinking about decks again. Not just a platform with furniture, but a real outdoor hangout. Something with soul. A little structure, a little sparkle, a little intention.
Our house in Shawnee has a great location — close to parks, trees for days, and a yard that’s finally stopped being a mud pit. But we’ve never done much with it. A few fold-out chairs, a half-dead fire pit, and that old grill that wheezes to life once every couple months. And now? I’m craving more.
While poking around for ideas, I found a guide from The Decksperts — Custom Deck Builder in Lenexa, KS. I almost skipped it thinking, “Eh, not my zip code,” but I’m so glad I clicked.
Their whole approach just made sense. First off — Lenexa folks clearly know how to live outside. The Decksperts talk about outdoor living like it’s part of your lifestyle, not just a backyard bonus. Their builds aren’t cookie-cutter rectangles; they’re personal. Grilling zones. Reading corners. Loungey layouts with built-in lighting and railings that are actually safe for kids and pets (bless).
The phrase that got me? “A space for grilling, outdoor seating, or just a quiet morning coffee.” That’s what I want. Not something massive or expensive. Just a place that feels like ours. Somewhere I can plop down with a throw blanket and my mug and pretend I’m on a weekend retreat, even if I’m still in pajamas.
They also mentioned how they build around Kansas climate realities — from hot summers to cool evenings. And that clicked too. I don’t want something that needs babysitting every spring. Composite decking suddenly seems like a smart move, especially since I am not someone who enjoys yearly upkeep. (Let’s be honest, I barely remember to water the front porch ferns.)
What really got me thinking, though, was the idea of built-in lighting. I hadn’t even considered that. But imagine finishing up dinner and heading outside, flicking on subtle deck lights, and sitting under the stars without fumbling with extension cords or tiki torches. It feels cozy. Thoughtful. A whole vibe.
It’s like the more I read, the more I realized a deck isn’t just an add-on. It’s an invitation — to gather, to slow down, to actually use the space you already have.
I’m not ready to break ground just yet (still wrestling with budget spreadsheets and wishlists), but I can definitely say this page helped me imagine something real: 👉 https://www.thedeckspertskc.com/areas-we-serve/lenexa-ks
There’s a version of my backyard that feels alive. Like a second living room. I can almost see it now.

We hosted a BBQ last weekend, and by the end I was just… done dragging chairs through grass
Tumblr media
It was a good day, don’t get me wrong. We grilled, the kids ran wild with bubbles, someone brought jalapeño poppers that basically disappeared in five minutes. But somewhere between yelling “Watch out for the sprinkler head!” and balancing a plate of ribs on my lap, I realized: we need an actual outdoor space.
Right now, our backyard in Bear is basically just a lawn. It’s wide and sunny, which is great — but it’s also uneven, soggy in patches, and kind of awkward to host in. There’s no real gathering zone. Just folding chairs that sink into the grass and a makeshift fire pit that only works if it hasn’t rained in 48 hours.
After that BBQ, I told my partner: “I think it’s time. Let’s look into building a deck.”
🎯 The Problem: A Backyard That Doesn’t Match Our Life
We use our backyard all the time. But it’s work. Dragging furniture out. Leveling wobbly tables with coasters. Chasing after the dog because there’s no fence or defined area.
We’ve got dreams. A big outdoor dining table. Maybe a built-in bench or bar. Some shade. A place where the kids can crash with popsicles after running through the sprinkler. Right now, that dream feels… scattered.
Our biggest concern? The yard is weird. Slight slope. Odd sun exposure. And we didn’t know if a deck would even fit with how the house is laid out.
🔍 The Find: A Deck Plan That Actually Makes Sense
While looking up local builders, I found this page from Prime Decks Delaware on deck installations in Bear. I half expected it to be generic, but wow — it actually spoke to the exact issues we’re dealing with.
They mentioned working on projects in neighborhoods like Fox Run and Lums Pond, which is super close to us, and they had ideas for all sorts of layouts — even for uneven or sloped yards. There was this one line about how they’ve helped design everything from “cozy backyard nooks” to “large-scale entertainment decks,” and I immediately thought: That’s what we want. Something in-between.
What impressed me most was their experience dealing with Bear’s climate quirks — the heat, the rain, the freeze-thaw cycle that’s wrecked more than one fence post in our yard. They seem to build with that in mind, using materials that don’t warp or splinter after one wild Delaware winter.
💡 Ideas I Didn’t Know I Needed
They really sold me on the idea of composite decking. At first I was leaning toward traditional wood (it’s what I grew up with), but reading about how composite handles humidity and doesn’t need annual sealing? I’m now fully in the “why create work for future me?” camp.
I also hadn’t thought about things like built-in lighting or railings that can double as bar tops — but now I can’t unsee it. The dream is starting to shape up as a multi-level deck: one area for lounging, one for dining, and maybe a little bump-out for a grill station.
What I appreciated is how Prime Decks seems to collaborate — they don’t just build decks, they help imagine them. I’ve seen so many contractors just slap together rectangles. But this felt more personal. More thought-out.
🛠️ What’s Next?
We’ve already started sketching. I even dragged the tape measure outside and did a very uneven layout with sticks and a hosepipe to get a sense of scale. It actually helped.
I think we’re going to reach out to get an estimate this fall. If the stars align, we’ll build in the off-season and be ready to break it in next spring — no more sinking chairs, no more soggy feet, no more “careful, that side slopes.”
Just a proper space. For grilling. For relaxing. For enjoying our Bear backyard the way we’ve always wanted to.

The Blade's Hope by boomerangmouth. Another commission based on my former glory days playing WEG Star Wars Role Playing Game. Her Captain came from a family of shippers with strong rebel sympathies. In their backstory, the kids would grow up learning the trade in the style of midshipmen as teenagers, and then when they became adults they had to go out into the galaxy and earn enough to buy their own ship and then become a full member of the family and marry.
Commission of the Deckplan for The Sanctuary by boomerangmouth. Another player character's ship in our campaigns, based on our GM's deck plans, but with the artists changes as he felt inclined based on his feel of design. Also, it is from my suggested retcon to make her more distinguishable from the Falcon.

I'm streaming Minecraft tonight at 7:00 Eastern (4:00 Pacific), with the long term goal of constructing a 1:1 scale model of the Starship Enterprise in survival mode
twitch_live
Twitch user HombreDeFlorida
I bought some vintage deckplans a few years ago and I've attempted this build in two separate creative worlds, but both times I lost enthusiasm and gave up about halfway through the super structure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This time I'm going to stream while I build so I can show off my process and get feedback.
It's actually going to be significantly larger than 1:1 because I don't want the interior to be claustrophobic. There's a sensory platform, 23 full decks, and a cargo hold along the hull, all squeezed into a reported height of 72.6 meters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's less than 3 meters per deck (including floors and ceilings), which just won't do.
The plans specify that each deck is 2.5 meters tall but I want them to be a full 3 with meter thick floors/ceilings because half-meter slabs are transparent (also, I want to use glowstone in the ceilings, but there aren't glowstone slabs in vanilla, so the light blocks would jut out into the decks beneath them).
Measuring from the hull all the way up through all 25 deck spaces and including the roof inflates the height from 72.6 to 101 meters, a 139.12% increase, so every dimensions will need to be scaled accordingly.
Old dimension -> New dimension
Length: 288.646m -> 401.560m (402m) Width: 127.102m -> 176.822m (177m) Height: 72.6m -> 101m Nacelle length: 153.619 -> 213.712 (214) Nacelle diameter: 17.3 -> 24.1 (24)
I may change these numbers ±1 to keep everything odd-numbered because that makes it easier to find centers and keep everything aligned.
I'll go over my process in-depth as I work on this build over the summer. My streaming schedule is set for Fridays and Saturdays 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM, but I might stream throughout the week too. I'll post here when I plan on hopping in, if anyone wants to watch.

Choosing the Perfect Deck Railing: Safety, Style & Durability
Tumblr media
The right deck railing not only enhances safety but also elevates your outdoor space’s style and functionality. With a variety of materials and designs to choose from, you can find the perfect railing to complement your modern, rustic, or classic deck. Glass panels provide a sleek, unobstructed view, while cable railings offer a contemporary, open feel. If durability is a priority, aluminum and metal railings resist rust and require minimal upkeep.
For a low-maintenance solution, composite and vinyl railings offer long-lasting beauty without frequent staining or painting. Traditional wood railings remain a timeless favorite, blending naturally with wooden decks for a warm, inviting look.
A well-designed deck railing not only provides security but also serves as a stylish architectural feature. Whether you're looking for privacy, visibility, or a decorative touch, selecting the right railing system enhances both the safety and aesthetic appeal of your outdoor living space.

Meanwhile, in Magic the Gathering, you're allowed to lie whenever, and it's on the opponent to be paying enough attention to the board state to know whether to trust you. This includes lying about being able to do things. For example, the following deckplan:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Set up the two enchantments. These stay active on the board until actively removed. Then, Selective Memory to exile everything that isn't a forest from your deck. At the start of each of your turns, activate Elfhame Sanctuary, seach your library for a basic land card, and say you couldn't find one. Skip your draw step. Your opponent can't do anything about this, because there's no rule about how good at searching you have to be. Pass your turn. On your opponent's turn, they have to draw a card, putting themselves one step closer to losing by running out of deck to draw. If they attack, activate Lost in the Woods for every summon that swings at you, and reveal the guaranteed forest draw, because that's all that's left in your deck, preventing the summon from doing damage to you. If your opponent doesn't have a way to win that isn't combat damage based, your victory is inevitable.
i didn't realize until just now that you straight up aren't allowed to bluff or lie about your hand in Yu-Gi-Oh. like it's literally a tournament-bannable offense explicitly on par with bribery.

i knew it was a deeply unserious game but i had no idea the situation was this dire
