INTRODUCTION

Im the reuploading asker from before! I definitely agree that downloading as saving things is fundamentally important to the preservation of the internet and its content, and its all fair and good to save things personally for sure! My only thing about reuploads is that like, u know ive had my art reuploaded multiple times with credit (and without tbh) before but without my permission on tumblr... Where i posted it originally and got a decent amount of traction so it does just feel like someone else is reaping the benefits (attention, compliments) for my hardwork while i didnt see any of that which is valuable to me (and other artists). Im not really sure where im going with this but yeah! I guess id like to hear ur thoughts

So that's the thing. Someone saving art to their personal computer is all well and good for preservation purposes, but it's not the same as uploading it to a site like danbooru where many other people can also download it. Now it's on dozens or more people's hard drives, making it much more likely to survive into the future.

But putting aside the media preservation aspect of all this, I have encountered this viewpoint you're stating before. Basically that reposting is robbing the artist of engagement, which like, I have a number of issues with. I understand wanting to post something you worked on, and have people like it and interacting with it a bunch. Having something you made get tons of likes and positive comments is really affirming these days, it's a big way people interact. In the past I might have scoffed at this notion, but it's just a fact of the internet we all socialize on. We all want to see the number go up.

And like I said in the last answer, I do prefer to reblog art directly from artists on here. There's no need to make my own post, and I like keeping the artist's original commentary! I always provide sources and try not to reblog unsourced art, or provide the source myself.

All that being said, I don't think there is a real solution to this issue that doesn't involved extremely draconian TOS agreements that would make tumblr and twitter even more awful. I think any potential downsides of people being able to post other peoples art are outweighed by the benefits of being able to exchange files pretty freely on the internet!!

I'm Estee Barnes. I'm a writer and self-taught traditional and digital artist. I love to make my own stories and worlds. I'm not so much of a fandom person, so there will be less fandom posting here. I still call my characters my OCs, even if the abbreviation has that fandom connotation. It's just easier.

(I have no problem with fandom either. It's just not what I usually dabble in!)

I believe all art is inspired by things and all art will continue to inspire. However, ripping entire concepts of my creative endeavours/items (entire outfits, full names, story, et cetera) for your own purposes is copying, not inspiration.

I know coincidences happen, but seeing a character with a unique outfit specific to an OC of mine (e.g., Renee's windbreaker jacket) is much more suspicious and likely to be called out than a regular/typical outfit (e.g., Lucas's green hoodie).

If you make fanwork of my OCs, let me know! Excluding Art Fight and if you're a mutual, I will only be comfortable having the artwork posted to my blog first. Proper artist credits and links will always be given and visible! I just don't trust the default scrapping settings on most social medias. My Honest Opinion On If My Art Gets Reposted And Traced (PSA)

I know that plenty of artists out there don’t really appreciate it when they’re art gets reposted without their permission but honestly, with knowing how the internet works, I’m honestly going to be indifferent and say something that will probably make many of my fellow artists mad

I really don’t care if my art gets reposted and although credit is much appreciated, it really doesn’t matter all that much to me as long as I know that people genuinely appreciate my work and I’m getting more attention for the effort that I put in it

I feel what a lot of people miss is that reposters don’t always have malicious intentions but rather they appreciate your hard work and want to show it to more people on other platforms that you perhaps don’t post on as often or even not post on at all (like with me no longer posting on Twitter or TikTok for example)

If anyone reposts my works to say Twitter or TikTok, I really wouldn’t mind as these are platforms that don’t really have any form of relevance to me anymore because of how much stress both platforms have caused me in the past

As much as I would like to see credit if my works are to be reposted, it doesn’t bug me if I don’t get credited either

I understand how the online world works and I acknowledge that there really isn’t much I can do to stop people from reposting my artwork without first contacting me for permission

You can call me careless for this and you know what..? You’d honestly be correct because as long as I know that there are more people appreciating all of my hard work, it doesn’t make a difference to me if my works are reposted or not so as long as it’s out there and gaining recognition

Honestly, there are times where I question in my own head why there aren’t more artists out there that are like me who are actually willing to acknowledge that their art will be reposted no matter what and there’s really nothing we can do about it and just leaving it as that

I do acknowledge that there are other ways people can support artists but considering as I can never really set up a system for me to earn money off my works and the factor of my DeviantArt commissions never getting all that much attention, this is the very least that I can do to get more recognition for my work

I have a similar opinion on if my art was to be traced because I can understand that on a personal level as I have multiple works that are traced from other’s works myself

Decided to just make this a single post instead of leaving it on the original reblog.

I keep seeing this crap here, and on Pinterest and it's getting on my nerves. I'm majoring in Graphic Design and plan to do this for a living. So I know a thing or two about what I'm talking about in terms of copyright, what you actually own and about giving credit. I thought maybe I ought to clear it up for y'all.

Screenshotting or video recording images from a movie or tv show, then coloring it over, adding a filter and some words DOESN'T LEGALLY MAKE IT YOURS. Sure, it's the internet, and we take pictures and we make pictures. But demanding someone gives YOU the credit for combining one or two images that weren't yours to begin with isn't legally stealing.

It's one thing if it's original art that you drew or photographs you took yourself, because that's YOUR original content. Reposting that kind of work and claiming it's yours IS stealing. Giving credit for gifs and other edits is more of a formal courtesy and not infringing on copyright.

I understand people work hard on gifs and it's annoying when people repost without credit– believe me, I get it. But many of those images weren't yours to begin with anyway. I can't just video record a gif from The Avengers, color it over with a filter and claim it's mine. That footage belongs to Disney and they never gave me any permission to use it or claim ownership of it. So demanding people do the same for you, when you don't own the footage or image you initially used, is outright hypocrisy.

Go ahead and block me if you like. I don't really care. I'm just tired of seeing this, because it's obvious people don't understand copyright laws at all, and they're to the point where they're cool with stealing off the internet themselves, but also feel entitled to receive "credit."

Edit: For the people who are gonna come at me: I don't care how long you've been anywhere, and how long you've been making anything. Stealing is still stealing, and acting entitled doesn't change that fact. So sure, before you "prove me wrong," show me where in the law it says you deserve credit for images you stole off the internet. No one owes you anything.

I'd prefer to keep my life out of the online sphere. I'd make certain posts about myself, talking about my experiences but I would prefer if it came from me and someone else. I don't particularly like people talking about me like they're close with me. I have trauma-induced Borderline Personality Disorder which lead to really askew sense of self and with my PTSD making it difficult to remember who I was, its really hard for me to keep track of myself. If you do know me personally, I'd prefer if you message me instead and not make public posts or comments about me. I'm really not great with having my information online as well.

If you do end up finding some of my old accounts, please don't dig through my post or my past life in general, especially if it's personal. It's really invasive and creepy.

Do not speak on my behalf. I am my own person and I have my own opinions. People do not need to speak for me.

If I do make content with my friends, especially with my DnD projects, do not ship me with my friends. Not only is it weird, but some of my friends are younger than me and are minors. They are practically my kids. I absolutely do not want to see them shipped with me.

People are always (rightfully) quick to call out someone who reposts art but I think we should do the same with people who repost and steal other people's gifs to make their own posts and don't even bother to credit the original creator. I'm not a gif maker myself but I know making gifs takes time and hard work and a lot of skills, and more often than not it's not even rewarded with a great response from fandom.

Sadly gifs are easy to download on this app and I feel like people see that as a free pass to appropriate them and use them in their own posts that sometimes get more notes than the original creator's one. I see people taking gifs from here and reposting them on twitter or even reposting them on tumblr itself where the original creator can see it and it makes me angry all the time.

So if you wonder why gif makers and other creators are leaving fandom spaces then maybe take a second to think before you're about to post something with someone else's content: do you know the original creator and the original source of the gif? YES. Good, then put a direct link to it in the post and possibly ask the op for permission. NO. Then press that little discard button on your post and keep going on with your life.

People notice (or at least I do) when someone is posting other people's gifs without permission, and honestly? It doesn't make you look good, especially if you say stuff like "gif not mine" or "kudos to the og creator" in the tags. If you really want to make posts and get notes and popularity then start making your own gifs instead of using someone else's hard work to do it.

By the way this applies to all forms of original content (fanart, fanfics, meta posts, headcanons, memes, etc...) but I feel like gif makers are underestimated and taken for granted too much. It's not fair to them to have their work stolen all the time by people who take one second to repost when they spent hours creating some of the most beautiful gifs I've ever seen.

Think about it, please and thank you, because it's not that hard to understand. Don't be an asshole.

Coloring manga for money is pretty risky in terms of how much trouble you can get into if the wrong person finds out. Fanart is already a pretty grey area but it's usually allowed because it's solely the work of the artist making the money, but coloring manga is a collaboration and you've got no permission from the collaborating artist to make money off their half of the work. I'm not necessarily condemning it but you should be really careful that could land you in some hot water if you use the wrong work and the publisher or artist gets mad about it.

Inaccurate. Since I usually work with Manga, I will set the parameter around Japan.

Fanworks of any sort, based on any copyright law, is illegal. Fanart is illegal. Fanfics are illegal. They're all illegal. Taking this into consideration, fan merch sold in cons are illegal as well. Fanfics that were commissioned are, too, illegal. Manga colorings are illegal. The English/Spanish/French fan-translated version of Tokyo Revengers that everyone enjoys is very much illegal. Fanedits. The manga panels that are posted on social media are illegal. The manga icons that people use are illegal. Everything besides consuming and buying the official content is illegal.

However, despite that, these works still continues to exist. Nobody gets reported for having a Baji icon and header that was stolen from an illegally uploaded chapter. Not to mention Japan has an insanely large fan community; they hold large events where they sell fan merch like fanzines, keychains, prints, and acrylic stands. So, why? For Japanese Companies, fanart is not necessarily allowed but tolerated, not because it's 'soley the work of the artist making the money', but because fanarts are good for promotion and marketing. No company could care if it's your art anyway. It's not the drawing alone that is copyrighted, it's the character itself. It's who that character is and where that character came from. But when people make fanart, it spreads the influence and interests of people to read a manga. It's like having a thousand free advertisements.

When you see discourse regarding the "gray area of fanarts", it's not because of people earning small from them but rather others who repost them without the artist's permission which makes it hard for them to control where their art goes. I will explain why on a later point.

Coloring manga is neither illegal (under unwritten terms of the "tolerance") nor a formality. When, let's say, Mangaka B makes art or colors the art of Mangaka A in their style, it is simply done to promote the manga of Mangaka A. I've seen this many times over the years. I'm unsure of how long you have been in fandoms, these aren't a paid collaboration of any sort.

In addition, over the last few months (December to present) I have changed my coloring style. I no longer color on the panel itself, but rather I do a rework of the line art to fit my coloring style better and add my own style in terms of the line strokes and line weight of the work. This tiny change is the loophole in manga coloring that technically categorizes your work as a "fanart" rather than just a manga coloring (but it's still a manga coloring, of course). This makes the piece sort of mine since both the line art and the coloring is done by me, rather than simply taking a panel and customizing under it. However, as aforementioned, it is still illegal as fanarts can be copyright claimed. But! At least the piece is no longer "half of their work", as you said.

But if we take this seriously and by virtue of law, every single fanart is half of a mangaka's work anyway since the design and characters are theirs. So...

I only opened comms because someone asked me to (and another person asked if I do Jojo and if no: "what if it's a commisison". bless that person). Also, it's the reason why I don't charge past $35. I have specified in the terms that these colorings are for personal use only and never commercial. I am not selling my rights over them, as I barely have any, but rather I am selling my abilities as a color artist. The work can technically be considered as a fanart. I have seen many artist taking many fan commissions. Fanmerch exists everywhere as well (though with fanmerch you are only allowed to add a tiny profit percent after the production cost). People who earn on Youtube by streaming fancolorings as well. All of these people are selling "half of someone's work" without permission. They are sold online, at big cons and fanevents in various places in Asia (like this, this, this and this)

Following this argument, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person who accepts coloring commissions. I myself have commissioned bigger "color artists" for their works. Like myself, they make their own rendition of the line art to fit their styles better while preserving the original style.

Well, this is the internet. The wrong person is bound to know, and I'm pretty sure the wrong person is already aware that these are happening. Like I have said, these coloring comms has been there since long before. And the 'wrong person' i.e. publishing companies have seen them for years. The only reason why no one has really been sanctioned is because, again, like I said, these are tolerated and taken as a form of free marketing. There's unwritten rules and boundaries about it, and so long as you don't cross them you will be fine.

Another thing to point out with regards to this "tolerance", the primary reason why I, and a lot of fanartist ans manga color arists, do not like people reposting our works is because we lose control over them. If or when the "wrong person" say that fanworks will no longer be tolerated, then we will be able to easily clear out our works by deleting our acocunts and contacting our commissionees (? is that a word). Another thing is that I am a fairly small account. I doubt I will be getting sanctioned. And if I do, I'm going to follow accordingly. I'm not four. If I'm gonna get a letter or a notice to stop, I will stop.

As you have expressed, this does seem like an important matter. Important things should be discussed personally. Anyways, a lil about her!!! As far as her personality goes, she’s very clumsy, patient, polite, a good listener, accepting, respectful, ambitious, stubborn, and utterly hopeful romantic.

She’s a bit of a health nut and captain of Queen’s security, making her an incredible leader as well. AFTER Spamton got evicted, she was not here for, nor had any part in that. She’s actually the shorter but arguably stronger of the swatchlings, both mentally and physically.(she’s worked very hard to get to where she is and has endured so much.) Her favorite music is anything upbeat and energetic! Her favorite genres being electro and pop. (She loves the rebellion group and their songs.) She loves to dance but is very bad at it. Again. SHES CLUMSY. (Though when she gets into her job she very meticulous and skilled at it.) My girl is a lonely, hopeful romantic mess. She loves everything like that but really struggles to find the right person. What not to do to artists...

This is something that happened a couple days ago when I posted part of the Pride Series drawings on Twitter. Just a normal compilation of a few of the couples (since I’m posting the couples individually only on Tumblr and Instagram):

Nothing out of the ordinary, right? The post was doing pretty good actually, more than any of my other posts on Twitter has! Until I came across the only comment on it...

[Putting it under the cut cause I guess I ranted a little too much, sorry...]

Me: “I’m just drawing shipps/couples that I personally like, it doesn’t necessarely mean that they are or have to be canon ^^” and it’s okay if you like another shipp, one thing doesn’t exclude the other”

Other: “Ok, I just foung it weird to see Sirius and Lupin as a couple.”

Me: *smile and thumbs up emoji*]

First of all... I’m not even go into the “reposting without credit or permission” territory, cause I know that most artists are aware of that already, but what I don’t understand is how this person thought it was okay to just go basically “well, that couple is weird, I like this one better” and tried to JUSTIFY it by reposting random art they found on the replies of my original fanart.

Look, I’m totally fine if you shipp other couples with the same character. There’s literally no problem with it and I even encourage that because it’s totally okay to work with different dynamics. Believe me, I’m a multishipper in many cases. But if you don’t like or never heard about my shipp (which...is kinda odd, I thought WolfStar was pretty popular in the fandom lmao), what gives you the right to go on my post, where I drew the couples that I like and act like I shouldn’t have drawn it and put along with other couples because “it doesn’t make sense” to you?

Like, they tried to say that my not-canon couple is weird by telling me their not-canon shipp is better? What’s the logic here? (And again, I’m not hating on their shipp, I literally couldn’t care less. I’m just intrigued by the aUDACITY)

I mean, I’ve already seen comments on other artists’ posts that were variations of “oh, I really dislike this couple/character, but the fanart is lovely!”, which is not a good thing to say already...but at least they’re like halfway supportive and kinda have good intentions behind it. Not ideal, but not as bad either. At least in my personal opinion, of course.

But I guess people forget they have the option to just...scroll past it if you don’t like it. Or, at least, don’t be rude when commenting on someone else’s work. Gosh, there are so many shipps and characters that I hate, but some artists that I love and admire do like them, so when they post something related to that shipp I just go “alright” and don’t interact with it at all. Because it’s not within my right to make an artist feel bad about themselves because I dislike the characters involved.

Is it so hard to...not give your opinion when no one asked? And I mean it in this specific case. Cause why would you go out of your way to try to invalidate someone’s work because...you don’t see the sense in it?

Sorry about the rant. This just got me really upset (and laughing at the same time). This is probably just a teenager with too much free time on their hands that happened to scroll past my post and thought it was a personal attack or something.

The moral of this whole text was: please, have some common sense. If you don’t like something, just sigh at it and move on (this phrase applying specifically for this situation with shipps and art). Do not repost fanart without permission, that’s mean to the original artist. Don’t try to shove your favorite couple on someone else’s work. Be nice to people, in general.
