idk. dr cordelier is basically just the original. but it is definitely from utterson's perspective. it's 'what the fuck is wrong with jekyll' and then the horror of realizing that your friend has no morals. and its taking hyde at his worst

there's no mercy for hyde, i guess. in the original, in jekyll's confession, there's a sort of loving tone about it, jekyll pouring over how he tried to protect hyde and give him an environment where he could finally exist freely. and i really like that part of the story

dr cordelier doesn't love joly. or severin. or opale. (or maybe i just don't speak french). jekyll in the 1968 version, he's full of love for his friends, and for hyde, and that's why i'm willing to overlook the deviancies

if your jekyll wouldn't write all those pitiful letters to lanyon and utterson, it's not jekyll. if your hyde wouldn't civilly breakfast with enfield, it's not hyde. but also a jekyll that isn't wholly loving, at least in a fatherly way, towards hyde isn't jekyll and a hyde that wouldn't beat a man to death for the crime of asking for directions isn't hyde

and imo the 1968 version is better at giving the doctor from the novel, and its devlin is just as good as joly at being utterson

but in terms of "jekyll isn't even the main character", dr cordelier gets that spot on, and apart from the MazM game, i don't know of any other adaptation that does that so well

Totally reminded me of this older movie called “Dr. Jeckyll and Ms. Hyde”

The doctor took a serum that turned him female, the female side was more aggressive and wanted to be the only personality and started messing around with the doctor’s life. They were both fighting each other for another elixir that would erase the other personality.

…I think. It’s been a while.

For anyone that cares, Eddie Izzard (aka Suzy Izzard), a trans comedian and actress, just dropped a new retelling of Jekyll and Hyde where Jekyll is a trans woman. I’ve yet to watch it but I thought it sounded like something you tumblr folks would eat up. It’s called Doctor Jekyll and it’s on Amazon Prime for those interested!

the strange case of dr vanessa and ms vanny!

guhh okay okay.okay. this idea came to me and i had to draw it. vanessa and vanny are extremely similar to jekyll and hdye and you HAVE to hear me out on this

jekyll created hyde to see what would happen when he separated the good and the bad in himself. he ended up splitting into these two personalities; jekyll, the kind scientist, and hyde, a scruffy and mean young man

vanny is vanessa's hyde. vanny was created so these vile acts could be taken out, but its not as thought vanessa doesnt have a choice. its in the same way jekyll chooses to drink that potion, despite knowing what hyde does.

vanessa enjoys playing the part of vanny. she enjoys this freedom, and keeps coming back in a similar way jekyll cannot stop himself from longing to turn into hyde. she knows fully well what she is doing is wrong. but she keeps putting on that suit.

Hear me out: an adaptation of 'Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' with David Tennant as Jekyll/Hyde and Michael Sheen as Lanyon.

David's been hoping to do something J&H again for years now anyway, so why not cast him as the namesake?

Plus, if we're heading for book accuracy, Jekyll and Lanyon's tiny scientist rivalry would be super entertaining with DT and MS in the respective roles. The reveal of Hyde to Lanyon would freaking RULE.

(If it does happen, PLEASE let it have book accuracy. I cannot take another Hyde that is just a one-dimensional crazy Victorian sex freak because that is NOT what he is. 💔🥀)

Anyway, I love David Tennant. Someone sedate me. :D

I haven’t read the book, but this still sounds like such an exciting role for him!

I don't know what fuels a good handful of Jekyll-Hyde films to be blatant fetish content, but at least Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde (1995) was some relatively normal stuff.

Heckyl and Hype was probably one of the first variations of the Jekyll-Hyde genre I ever watched (Before TGS, MazM, ETC), and because I don't like to play film critic; I'll give you this quote from someone who can.

"I’d say “suck it, Boogie Nights tracking shot,” but if this movie hears me saying “suck it” it’ll probably think I’m referring to feet, so I won’t."
