Hi!!! So i need a little help please, english isn't my first language and I'm experimenting with english writing for the first time, I'm struggling with grammar and ppl have suggested me to use grammarly, would that be ethical? Is there an alternative that is ethical?

For more basic grammar checks, the use of grammarly is generally acceptable. If this is a question of academic integrity, it really does depend on the assignment/professor because grammarly is still AI powered with content generation. If it's for your personal projects, grammarly claims to adapt to your writing style, but over-reliance on this tool could lead to plagiarism.
Some more traditional tools that don't rely as heavily on generative AI are the built-in grammar checks in Microsoft Word or Google Docs. It also never hurts to have your work proofread by a native English speaker.
All online grammar checks use AI. However, it's easy to navigate responsible use of it. Just avoid making them your primary tool and relying too much on their paraphrasing options. Also be sure to treat their corrections as suggestions, reviewing them carefully to be sure they fit into the context of your writing.

SOUKOKU SEASON 5 ANALYSIS
"Dazai never directly says what he wants. He always gets someone else to say it for him." -Kunikida
Very rarely do we ever see Dazai express genuineness to someone he cares about, ESPECIALLY when it comes to Chuuya. The only time Dazai is genuine with Chuuya (excludding post corruption) was when he postponed the end of the world in order to know if Chuuya wanted to know if he was human or not. So, when Dazai learns about Chuuya's vampirism, it's not out of character for Dazai to show him genuine feelings, since Chuuya wouldn't be conscious.
Except... He knew Chuuya was never a vampire.


So what do these scenes mean?
The genuineness of Dszai's speeches aren't tactically necessary, because he didn't HAVE to act like he cared just to convince Fyodor. Fyodor would have been as convinced if Dazai was also pretendung to see Chuuya as a tool. (Infact, Fyodor might have been more convinced that Dazai was protecting his partner by PRETENDING not to care).
But none of these speeches were for Fyodor. These speeches were too geniune.
Dazai didn't need to have actual flashbacks on their youth just to convince Fyodor. He didn't even have to mention that he and Chuuya, at times, bonded. These lines were unnecessary for their escape.
And then comes the biggest kicker. "Come back to me."
. . .
It's been established that Dazai didn't need to say these things in order for their plan to go well. It also wouldn't make sense that Dazai was saying these things in order to tease Chuuya (He literally reminisced on flashbacks, which Chuuya couldn't know about). The only other option is that he was being sincere.
The issue is, that Dazai never directly says what he wants. "Anything I want gets lost in the end." (Paraphrase)
But based on his actions and speeches, it seems like what Dazai is saying, is that he misses Chuuya.
The line "come back to me" no longer means "come to your senses", but "be apart of my life again."
The sad look he directs at the cieling when thinking about their youth no longer means that he's upset that Chuuya will die, but that he misses what they had.
Other lines like:
"We used to do this all the time." (Helicopter scene) Dazai once more looking back on their past.
"I've spent the past 7 years thinking of ways to kill Chuuya." (He says to Sigma) This line in particular is peculiar because Dazai figured out his weakness ages ago (poison). This just proves that he thinks about Chuuya.
Everything he says is geniune, yes, but has a second meaning to it aswell. Which, again, I highly believe is him saying that he misses Chuuya.
So what is Chuuya's reaction to this? Well, nothing. He treats Dazai the exact same way. Which completely makes sense.
He may be able to figure out Dazai's motives. But when it comes to what Dazai thinks about Chuuya, Chuuya couldn't be more oblivious. This is seen in the 15 arc, where Dazai was manipulating Chuuya to be his dog in the Port Mafia. Later in the dungeon scene when they're 22, Chuuya fell right into Dazai's manipulative trap.
Chuuya's great at picking up ques from Dazai when it comes to fighting an enemy. When Dazai's attention is directed at him, however, he's just as easy to misinterpret Dazai's intentions.

I posted a little about it yesterday - but I am always of the mind that information is one of the most useful tools when dealing with a chronic condition.
If you are mentally ill and considering or currently receiving CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) I want you to know what that means.
So, first off, CBT is talk therapy, wherein you identify some base problems you have (like social anxiety, depression, coping with grief, feeling alone or paranoid, etc. Once those base ideas are established, the idea is you talk about them or really anything at all with your therapist and they offer gentle challenges to the way you perceive yourself, in an attempt to help you rewrite that little voice in your head that says mean stuff.
For example, taken (paraphrased) from one of my own sessions:
Me: I just feel useless. I keep failing to do anything, there’s so many steps and I get so frustrated and exhausted and I don’t finish anything.
Therapist: Well, you have ADHD, sensory issues, chronic pain - everything is hard because the world isn’t made for you. You’re not useless - the world isn’t made to help you do things.
Me: But that’s too easy.
Therapist: Why is that?
Me: I don’t know. It feels like an excuse.
Therapist: It’s the same excuse the world uses to refuse to help, isn’t it? The world is built for neurotypical people, it’s built to help them. But not to help you.
Me: Yeah… Yeah I guess so. If I had someone to help with the fiddly things I could probably do more.
This exchange doesn’t actually fix my problems - because that’s not my therapist’s job with CBT. A therapist’s job is to help nudge the way I think about those problems with my own mental health as the focus. In this exchange, she guides my thought process toward the idea that me feeling helpless and needing assistance from others is not a personal, moral failing on my part - it is the result of a society that is not built to help me. Which is accurate! The world is not built to be easier for me. That adjustment is made to help improve the way I view myself and my situation, to help raise my own opinion of myself. To remind me that I am not useless - the world around me is just not built with my needs in mind. That’s a lot healthier of a mindset to have here - as opposed to “I’m useless and it’s my fault”.
SO. That said. What is your therapist doing in sessions? What shouldn’t they be doing?
They should be listening more and talking less, especially in the beginning. Their questions should be prompting, open ended, friendly. Encouragement to talk.
They should not be pressuring you to speak or making you feel as if they’re interrogating you. If you feel pressured or as if they are prying as opposed to just allowing you to talk, find a new therapist.
Their comments should fall either into casual chatter to make you more comfortable, or into gentle challenges to statements you make that may be distorted by poor mental health. Example: “why do you feel that way?” “If it were someone else, would you still think that?” “How do you know?” Or leading statements that may guide your perception into something healthier.
They shouldn’t be judging you. CBT is not where you go to find out if you’re a bad person - it’s where you go to adjust your thought patterns. If you are blaming yourself, your therapist should be challenging it to make sure that it’s not a distortion you are under. It’s a general no-no for your therapist to ever make you feel as if you are the bad guy here, outside of some pretty damn specific circumstances or specialties. If your therapist is judging your actions, find a new therapist.
They should be connecting with you. Sometimes, this just won’t happen because you’re too different from each other. That’s okay. But if you aren’t connecting, it’s a good idea to change therapists.
They should be offering you information, as well - printouts, exercises, coping mechanisms, things they’d like you to take note of in the time between sessions. Stuff to help you learn to recognize your thought patterns on your own and make them healthier by yourself, too.
Never be afraid to change therapists. You do not have to continue therapy with that person if you are not getting a benefit from it. You are likely paying for their time - don’t waste your money if your therapist isn’t helping. If you leave your first session and hated it, change therapists.
Above all of this: CBT is used because it’s easy to adapt to most patients, but it is NOT the only type of therapy available. If CBT does not work, there are other options.

Hello!!! I was wondering if you learned Japanese by yourself or with the help of a teacher? Either way it's really impressive that you've translated so many of the episodes of the anime AND clips of the musical! Also, do you have any tips for people who are trying to learn Japanese?
Hi! Thank you for your kind words! I want to preface that I'm nowhere near fluent and I have a loooot to learn still. I only translate as a hobby and I'm prone to mistakes, and the last thing I want to do is spread misinformation so you're always welcome to message me about glaring mistakes!!
I learned mostly by myself. I worked for a bit in Japan, in education and a little bit in tourism, so it helped. I went through language books called TRY!, the N5, N4 and N3 volumes. After that I haven't really learned anything academically... I have phone apps with vocabulary and kanji flashcards and I try to maintain a daily routine of reviewing them + adding new ones regularly. I listen to a lot of Japanese media, and translating Nintama has been a great tool for learning too lol. If you're learning the language by yourself, it's difficult to maintain a certain discipline without going to classes, so building habits is important... I recommend using flashcards apps like Anki and doing daily reviews (personally everytime I want to doomscroll or waste time on social media for too long I "punish" myself with a kanji quizz or something. I think there's always time to do a bit of flashcard reviewing, before bed, while commuting, etc...). Genuinely the best advice that I can give you is to be consistent and regularly immerse yourself in the language. Read (I need to do more of that...), listen, watch... Put a bit of the language in your everyday life so it becomes habit. Personally I printed a list of kanji and taped it on the door in my restroom so I'm obligated to look at kanji every day lol.
Incidentally, I think Nintama is a great tool for learning Japanese. It's an educational show aimed at children, so most characters speak proper Japanese, they speak slowly, paraphrase themselves a lot, and tend to repeat the same words or expressions over and over again, either throughout one episode or as a character quirk. I'm sure it'll be easy to find grammar points you've studied in a textbook used in practice in Nintama, so try watching it without subtitles and focus on the audio! (mostly the more slice of life episodes at first, instead of the ones who get into Sengoku-specific explanations though haha) Finally, I encourage you to try and find practical exercises, either online or in a textbook, to practice constructing your own sentences. I got lazy with that so I'm in a situation where my understanding of Japanese is much better than my speaking/writing... 😑 And having a conversation partner is of course the best!
it's only partially related but if you're in Japan and your visa allows you to do so, I'd recommend looking at touristic/cultural spots that are less well-known. Japan has a problem where every tourists go to visit the same places that end up being overcrowded, while a lot of temples, shrines, and others place of interest struggle to find visitors. I found that a number of them will hire you to test tourism packages, tours, evaluate tour guides, etc ; it's not always in English, but they are very pleasant jobs where you're basically paid to be a visitor and give your opinion on the experience lol, so you get to listen to the language, and learn a lot about less well-known places. You don't have to live in the middle of nowhere to find these too ; I did it a lot in Kamakura, which has that issue where people will crowd the most famous places while ignoring a lot of "hidden gems".

Here's a straightforward guide to help you get started on your Bible study journey!
Choosing a Translation
One of the first decisions to make when studying the Bible is choosing a translation that suits your needs and preferences. There are several translations available, each with its own approach to translation. Here are the three categories they fall into.
1. Word for Word Translation: These translations, such as the King James Version (KJV) or English Standard Version (ESV), aim to follow the original texts as closely as possible, offering a literal rendering of the words and phrases. They are great for detailed study and analysis of the text.
2. Thought for Thought Translation: These translations prioritize clarity and readability, conveying the original meaning in modern language by updating language to be mor relevant to modern readers. They are ideal for easy comprehension, especially for beginners or those looking for a straightforward understanding.
3. Paraphrased Translation: These translations capture the essence or gist of the message rather than focusing on precise wording. They are often easier to understand and are suitable for new believers or younger children. However, they are most likely to stray from the original text and can sometimes be slightly inaccurate.
When I am reading to spend time with God (such as my daily reading) I use NLT, which is a thought for thought translation and therefore easier to understand. However, during bible study it is advisable to keep a word for word translation on hand (I use the KJV translation in the YouVersion bible app alongside a physical copy of the NLT).
Establishing a Study Routine
1. Prayer: Before sitting down to read, it's essential to prepare yourself spiritually and mentally. Begin your study session with a prayer, asking God to open your mind and heart to His word and guide you in your understanding.
2. Reading the Passage: Start by reading the passage without taking notes or annotating. Try to grasp the overall message and what God is communicating to you.
3. Annotation and Reflection: Read the passage again, this time making notes of any observations, questions, or insights that come to mind. Consider who is involved, what is happening, why, when, and how. Reflect on the message God is conveying through the text.
4. Consulting Study Tools: Dive deeper into the passage by using study tools such as Bible commentaries, online resources, or cross-referencing different translations. This helps gain a broader perspective and insight into the text. They often also include historical context and reasons for writing.
5. Application: Reflect on how the passage applies to your life. Identify one or two key messages and think about how you can incorporate them into your daily life. Is the scripture challenging you to change certain behaviours, draw closer to God, or strengthen your faith? Pray for guidance on how to apply these insights. Personally, I like to make an extra effort to apply these in the upcoming week.

Studying the Bible is not just about acquiring knowledge but also about cultivating a deeper relationship with God and living out His word in our lives. Still thinking about the post that scoffs at the idea of Stede being a Dom because he demands respect and then has to rather pathetically add, "... Please?" to the end as if that's proof that the desire (which can lead eventually to the capability) to be dominant and authoritative isn't there.
At the risk of repeating the absolutely stunningly obvious over something that was probably a joke, the reason Stede being bad at Dom stuff like dominance and authority is only further proof that it's a desire of his, albeit one he has to work at making into a reality, is because this is a comedy.
One of my favorite points made in Steven Kaplan's "The Hidden Tools of Comedy" is, to paraphrase, that comedy is about failure. Specifically, a failure of possessing all the tools to achieve what we desire.
Which is to say, we all have goals in life. In a drama, people tend to have the tools they need to achieve their goals. Whereas in a comedy, they lack them.
And I don't just mean things like, "In a drama, a character has a goal to save the world and also has the tools (or gains the tools) to achieve this goal." I mean really basic stuff.
Stuff like, "In a drama, a character's goal is to have an amazing first kiss with the love of their life. They have all the tools necessary: mutual attraction, skill at kissing, good breath. The tools they need to have an amazing first kiss are there, in their possession."
Whereas in a comedy, these tools are not guaranteed. A really common comedy beat might be, say, wanting to kiss the love of your life and being stressed out because you just had a garlic-y meal and your breath smells bad. Or the protagonist just isn't very good at kissing and it's messy and embarrassing. Or they lean in for the perfect kiss only to realize to their horror that the attraction isn't mutual.
Comedy is about taking away the tools to make a story go perfectly or smoothly. That's why comedy is often used as a tool to make stories more realistic, because in the real world, we don't always have the perfect minty-fresh breath and kissing technique to knock our crush's socks off with that first kiss. We are often inadequate and uncertain and prone to foolish mistakes.
Now, keep in mind though, that comedy is as much an elevated, often abstract style as drama is. We're only mimicking real life. So while comedy drags our heroes from the heavens of dramatic, anguished perfection back down to earth, comedy is also exaggerating the number of tools we might have missing at any one point. But we've all been there, a little, with not having the tools at our disposal to make the moment as perfect as we imagine in our heads. But by the same token, we've had weighty, dramatic moments that aren't comedic. First kisses that went great.
So, to bring this back to Stede and Ed - OFMD is a comedy.
Stede wants to be authoritative and respected as a fearsome pirate captain (of his own stripe) but, because he lacks the tools like the easy command with which Ed governs his ship, he has to tack on a pathetic, "Please?" to his demands for respect. But the desire is there. The desire is real and presumably he will gain skill at achieving what he wants, to be respected, so that he is able to command respect at a suitably dramatic moment or at least in the right dramatic company like that of Ed, who has always respected and indeed put Stede on a pedestal. For most of S1, just about everyone who meets Stede thinks he's a bumbling fool, but not Ed. Even at Stede's most bumbling and pathetic, Ed was always impressed by his audacity. They've always clicked they've always been comfortable together when it's just the two of them and the nerves go away.
And I think, far more than being impressed by some guy with natural viciousness or authority managing to command respect as a pirate captain, we've seen time and again that Ed is actually more likely to be impressed by someone like Stede who tries, like a total lunatic, to command respect while having literally none of those natural tools in his favor. Where everyone else saw someone pathetic for doing that, Ed has always seen the absolute balls it takes for Stede to leave everything he knew behind to try to live a pirate's life, while still marching to his own tune.

I'm currently taking a break from writing and editing. So, I thought I'd let you in on the apps and sites that have been my go-to for writing, and give you a quick run-down on how I make the most of them. Everything I use is free 'cause you know, college student budget. You might already know about most of the stuff I'm gonna talk about. However, if you are just starting out and unfamiliar with these apps and sites, I hope you'll find this information useful.

This tool is my go-to-tool I use once I finish writing and start editing. It identifies surface errors like overlooked typos, punctuation errors, and grammar issues; with a single click, you can fix all these issues instantly.
It also includes an integrated thesaurus that I use when I need to quickly find synonyms for a word.
There are two versions available: free and premium. I use the free version, which, in my opinion, performs just as well. The only minor drawback is that when you run a report, it only checks the first 500 words. This might require some effort to copy and paste the texts, but I promise you, it's absolutely worth it.

As a non-native English speaker, I occasionally find myself struggling with the constructions of simple sentences; when I read them, I feel that it doesn’t sound quite right for me, and I know I want to change it. In such cases, I use this tool.
However, I would not recommend using it to paraphrase extensive texts.
There's both a free and premium version available. Personally, I stick with the free version.
I use this app for writing. It offers many functionalities, but what I really appreciate is the ability to create multiple pages within pages. This feature eliminates the need to open numerous files as it organizes everything in one place:

I think an additionally understated element in the tragedy of the Psychonauts' degradation is how much it had to have affected Lili and Truman. The latter has to bear the responsibility of needing to keep the organization that his Uncle and the other founders started, despite unfortunately also not really having the means to truly "fix" the heart and soul of the organization due to the founders' various mental issues. The kind of burden he must be under, that feeling of never being quite good enough to hold the mantle but still trying his damdest to keep things together with what skills and tools he has...
I think that's probably another factor of why he would bring on agents like Hollis, Sasha, and Milla; because even if none of them can truly begin to fix the problem, they end up sharing a lot of the qualities needed that represent what his family tried to do. The drive to help others fight their inner demons, the drive to explore the human mind, and the love to try to aid those who need it is there (albeit not perfect, given their mixed record with the Campers of Whispering Rock), even if only to find and mentor those who came later on in hopes of prolonging things.
And Lili, even if she can't entirely pin the specifics, had to grow up with that burden as well. Daughter of a man stuck with that kind of burden, the distance mixed with love for her father, but still perceptive enough to recognize that something is clearly missing and gone from the Psychonauts, the broken family dynamic with her Uncle whom she's never met and her missing mother...
Truman's entire baggage where he became the leader and had to literally fire his uncle AND see most of the others become reclusive and unwell because of all their shared gried is so sad... like that was his uncle helmut who died, that was the lucy he got to know as a young adult as a sweet, passionate woman who was basically like an aunt to him
truman almost certainly volunteered to hep build the PN organization after maligular was defeated in hopes that he could help lighten the load (and maybe work to cope with his losses)...
from the very little we know about the real truman, he doesnt seem like the guy who likes or wants to be in charge, since he's apparently been trying to put hollis in charge for years
but he's also ultimately the best person for the job bc of how his reaching out to hollis parallels how ford was reaching out to people like compton
they both knew these people struggling and making awful mistakes just needed a chance to develop their skills and flourish in the right conditions
from a very easy to miss conversation we know lili says (paraphrasing) that uncle bob would never hurt her dad. and truman sends pictures of lili to bob despite the pain and distance between them... im sure truman really wishes his daughter could know these people the way he grew to know them... and it messes lili up bc she really probably only has gotten to speak to compton and otto, a nervous wreck and a reclusive weirdo respectively. her perception of the rest of them is through stories told to her & through comic books, thats so wack
the fact shes rly only gonna get to know her uncles after all this tragedy is, well... tragic!!

Sealing A Curse (Kenjaku x Mahito)

Day 11 of kinktober: Sensory deprivation! Hopefully the beginning doesn't feel too stiff, if you've been reading my stuff for long, you'll know writing dialogue stresses me out and takes me quite some time. I circumvented that by paraphrasing their conversation, so I could get this out quicker. Crossposted to Ao3 under the same name and shared to twt at kenjakusbrain. Comment or reblog if you enjoy!
Kenjaku enjoyed just how curious Mahito was, the curse was always asking questions and more than willing to listen to him go on about any random topic. He really appreciated that the curse had a seemingly unquenchable thirst for knowledge, at least when it came to humans. While there were times Mahito had asked him about different tools or objects, he had never seemed so interested in one. So when he asked about the Prison Realm, Kenjaku was a little more than surprised.
It started small, the curse occasionally asking about how it worked or how it kept someone alive. It seemed that he had listened to Jogo ranting about how he was certain he could put the realm to better use than Kenjaku, and had become curious about what it actually was. Mahito listened intently as Kenjaku explained its uses and the concept of nullifying cursed energy.
Nullifying cursed energy is something that had stuck with Mahito, he couldn’t seem to fathom the idea of something losing the charge of cursed energy. When Kenjaku compared it to the severed fingers of Sukuna that they possessed and the talismen they were wrapped in, it seemed to make a little more sense.
The cursed energy wasn’t being removed, it was just being temporarily stopped. That piqued Mahito’s interest, his mind immediately going to using the prison realm as a way to prevent Yuuji from using his technique against him. It annoyed him that the boy was able to brush off his abilities so easily.
Mahito huffed as Kenjaku explained that it wouldn’t quite work like that, as Yuuji Itadori’s technique wasn’t what brushed off his abilities, but his role as a vessel was the issue Mahito faced. It seemed this wasn’t quite what Mahito had wanted to hear. Lamenting about how boring it was to not be able to use the prison realm for something that suited him.
Kenjaku just reminded him that it would be very helpful, if not essential to nullifying Gojo’s technique. To keep Gojo locked away and unable to use any cursed energy for an indeterminate amount of time would be more helpful than anything else.
Ignoring Kenjaku’s further explanations about the prison realm, Mahito turned his mind to something he was more curious about. He interrupted Kenjaku’s explanation to ask about how a sorcerer could live separated from their cursed energy.
Instead of chiding Mahito for interrupting him, Kenjaku felt a new idea float to the forefront of his mind.
“Even you could live separate from your energy for a while before it started to have a serious effect on you,” Kenjaku said, eyes now intently focused on the curse that lazed about next to him. They had been reading together, but it seemed Mahito was too distracted to read anymore, his head finding its way into Kenjaku’s lap and his book long forgotten on the coffee table in front of them.
Mahito’s ramblings stopped at Kenjaku’s suggestion. The origin of his curiosity did lie with the idea of being trapped and unable to use one's abilities. He laughed at Kenjaku’s statement, not believing a word the man said. Of course he knew what Kenjaku was talking about, but he was much stronger than a cursed object.
“You’re funny!” Mahito said, still giggling to himself at the implication that he could be controlled like that.
By now, Kenjaku had closed his own book in favor of studying the curse on his lap. Mahito’s hair splayed across his thighs, it would be so easy to pull the curse up by his hair and make him listen to what he had to say. That wouldn’t work with Mahito though, if he wanted the curse to understand something, it had to be an even more hands on experience. Kenjaku knew he could speak on this until his throat was sore, and until he proved it, Mahito would just giggle to himself about the foolishness of humanity.
Without warning, Kenjaku stood up, forcing Mahito to sit up or be thrown off of the couch. Kenjaku ignored the curse as he complained about having to move when he was comfortable, choosing instead to head into another part of his domicile to find something that would help him give Mahito a more practical example.
When Kenjaku returned he had a small box in his hands. Mahito reached for it, but Kenjaku kept it out of his reach, like a child far too eager for a birthday gift.
“Close your eyes and I’ll help you understand,” Kenjaku said. It was obviously a trap, or at least that’s what Kenjaku thought. He expected Mahito to whine or complain in some way or at least be resistant in some fashion. So he was surprised when Mahito’s eyelashes fluttered shut at his request. Either he was so confident in his own abilities or he trusted Kenjaku more than he let on.
Kenjaku wasn’t sure which was stranger for the curse.
Not wanting to waste any time, Kenjaku removed a long talisman from the box. It was stronger than some of the other ones he had, normally used for dampening the energy on strong cursed tools. He figured, if he used his own energy correctly, it would do just the same thing to Mahito.
Kenjaku moved with a practiced ease, his many years of experience shining through. Before Mahito even had a chance to speak, Kenjaku had wrapped the talisman around Mahito’s head three times, each new loop obscuring his vision until he was completely blindfolded. Kenjaku held his hand there for a moment, focusing his energy into the talisman with the intention of metaphorically sealing Mahito.
Mahito froze as Kenjaku’s hand left his temple, for once he was too stunned to speak. It was as if he had just used his domain expansion multiple times in a row, the ache that settled in his body was a heavy one. What the curse thought was a soreness however, turned to panic when he realized he was unable to use his ability.
Reaching his hand up, Mahito attempted to stretch it out to touch Kenjaku’s face. Even though Mahito couldn’t see, when he felt nothing happen to his hand, he quickly moved to peel off the talisman. However upon touching the material on his face, he found it felt like it was attached to the skin rather than sitting on top of it.
Kenjaku’s hands closed around Mahito’s wrists, forcing the curse’s hands together. Another flourish of material in his hands and Kenjaku had secured Mahito’s wrists. If the curse could see, he might have been able to notice that the two talisman Kenjaku had applied to them were different. Since he couldn’t however, he had no way of anticipating his new lack of ability to control his limbs.
All it had taken was two talismans imbued with Kenjaku’s cursed energy to completely strip Mahito of his ability and bodily autonomy. The curse wanted to scream, to beg Kenjaku to take them off, but he was unable to even move his lips.
“Maybe next time you’ll believe the information I’m telling you. Imagine if a sorcerer caught you like this and used it to exorcize you, or worse used it to get information out of you!” Kenjaku spoke, his voice dripping with feigned concern. He did care if something happened to Mahito, though not out of care for the curse himself.
Pressing a hand on Mahito’s cheek, Kenjaku wondered if he’d been too heavy handed in his use of his own cursed energy. Mahito didn’t react at all to his touch. Kenjaku squeezed Mahito’s cheeks, cupping his chin and forcing the curse’s mouth to open.
A salacious thought popped into Kenjaku’s mind, with the curse unable to fight back, he could perhaps test out the limits of his admittedly strong talisman. The first was meant to cut Mahito off from his ability to use cursed energy, he hadn’t realized just how much this would affect a curse like Mahito. It was as if he had submerged the curse into a sensory deprivation chamber, he couldn’t see and it simultaneously felt like he was floating and like he was being touched all over.
The second talisman made Mahito unable to move, his body frozen unless Kenjaku moved him. Paired with the first, this one did lessen Mahito’s whole body sensation, now making him feel more like he was surrounded by water. The inability to move or properly feel anything had Mahito so discombobulated that mentally, the curse felt like he was on the verge of passing out. Kenjaku said it would take a while for a curse like him to take serious damage from these, a part of Mahito’s mind was certain that this was the end for him.
Taking advantage of Mahito’s current state, Kenjaku leaned forward and kissed his unmoving lips. Tongue delving briefly into the curse’s forced open mouth.
“I don’t know if you can still hear me, but this will only take but a few moments. You usually finish quickly and I just want to see how that translates to being manually subdued,” Kenjaku didn’t bother trying to make himself sound seductive. This compression of the play’s peaks and chasms into a flatter, more manageable package is also a matter of adaptation. Mark Izzard’s cut is heavy on paraphrase. Less familiar words are regularly replaced with modern synonyms, and though the intention is honorable (Izzard has spoken of wanting the show to be accessible to “the people who don’t find Shakespeare easy, like I didn’t when I was a dyslexic kid”), the substitutions clank and clunk. “For who would bear the whips and scorns of time … / When he himself might his quietus make / With a bare bodkin?” becomes “When he himself might his departure make / With a mere dagger”; “the rank sweat of an enseamed bed” becomes “grease-covered bed.” It’s not as if the Izzards are alone here — people have been throwing resources into “translating” Shakespeare for centuries. But what these ventures always miss is this: Poetry isn’t just about immediate, literal understanding, and it is the job of the actor and the director, as much as it is the job of the text itself, to stimulate both comprehension and revelation. Poetry uses many tools to convey meaning: We may never have heard the word “enseamed,” but when we hear an actor—wild with distress, disgusted to the point of nausea—stretch and hiss its syllables as if retching poison, then we learn something by feeling it. Whether or not you change the vocabulary, this fully embodied investment in the text—this savoring and sharing of its every nuance—is still the job. When we update the text and then fail to do the job, all we do is throw fuel on the facile notion that perhaps these plays are too elitist and crusty for us after all.

i defeated Fae Tactics

i love how many tactics games need to put "tactics" in their title. imagine that with any other genre.
so theres a genre of indie game i like to call "that ratatouille gif". i have attached it for your convenience
you know what i mean. Bloodstained, Yooka-Laylee, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Palworld, its a whole thing. this is a dangerous genre to classify things into, because theres a very thin line between "taking heavy inspiration" and "being a sequel". like, its easy to say that Paradise Killer is a Kill The Past game with that got sent to the wrong address in the morphogenetic field. theres the moon symbolism, the assassins, theres literally a silver case for gods sake. but i cant call it a ripoff because it brings so much unique to the table with the worldbuilding, presentation, and gameplay.
thats how i feel about Fae Tactics. when it first lit that spark, inspiring me to play it for as many hours as i could as many days as i could until i finished it, i felt my childhood. i remember one of the first video games i ever owned: final fantasy tactics a2 grimoire of the rift. i played the ass off of that game, expiring everthing you could do multiple times over. it inspired a lifelong respect for the tactical rpg in my bones, and Fae Tactics scratched an itch ive been feeling for a while
i dont want to give the impression that im nostalgia blind, thats not the case at all. comparing a trpg to final fantasy tactics (even what i consider the worst game in retrospect - man the law mechanic was a pain) is like comparing a fighing game to street fighter. remember that time capcom tried to sue someone who made a fighting game that stole too many mechanics and design elements from street fighter 2. the court said, paraphrased, "sf2 was so influential on the genre that MOST games have street fighter mechanics now. like, platformers with powerups arent ripping off mario, that just how platformers work now." yeah thats what fft did too.
what im saying is, the game takes the fundamentals of the genre as estalished by its best examples, and builds on them in unique and engaging ways. monsters have a random chance of dropping cards, which lets you equip them as summons for the next battle. its great to have more experimental low-stakes party members. instead of focusing all your valuable main character slots on healers if youre going into a heavy damage fight, you can just bring a bunch of water summons to power through it and support your glass cannons until they end the fight pronto. or, you can have a lot of ranged summons that suppliment your tankier party members; or expendable summons to distract enemies while you buff your party. this is a huge strength of any tactical game - letting you stratagize in a way that is functional to your playstyle.
something id like to note is that there are tons of mechanics, but i only felt overwhelmed at the very beginning. by fight, like, three? i was totally in sync with the games tools and how to use em. this is tough. i remember by playthrough of zanki zero, where i got so overwhelmed by shikabane and character relationship gene splicing and the crafting mechanic and the cloning and the aging and the attack windup and those stupid tentacle attacks that i just fizzled out and gave up trying to comprehend stuff (until chapter six, but im getting distracted). i never saw a new mechanic in Fae Tactics that made me think "whats the point? im not doing this". instead, i was always interested in how i can use this new element to enhance my gameplay. its that classic theory of Get To vs. Have to. i never had to do the cooking minigame every time i slept - i got to play a game where i boosted my partys stats.
so how about the story? i think it was pretty good! each continent that you can explore has its own little isolated plot, and while it all connects in the end, i was worried it would fall into the same trap that i felt saints row 2 did. it didnt feel like you had a gang, it felt like you had 3 friends who all did their own thing and you helped. i think this is managed in the most effective yet realistic way - have peony as the center of the communication because its just her personality. shes doing the talking because shes just a friendly person with leadership skills. also like 1/3 of her party cant talk. the only hurdle then is making everyone feel too isolated - i wont lie, there are shades of that, but i think letting the characters relax in the background if they arent immediately relevant to a scene is a good compromise of this. like, your dog chico doesnt always show up in cutscenes unless they have a weapon upgrade or something. thats fine, cuz like, theyre a dog. itd waste everyones time if everyone chimed in every time anything happened. so its not like gat is inexplicably uninterested in the non-ronin gangs, its just that characters are allowed to be offstage if they dont have any lines. it really helps the group feel more cohesive and friendly, and in general it feels less like oure going on mission sidequests waiting for the area to clean and instead youre going on a real ass adventure
also, if i can be candid, matilda is one of the most badass characters ive ever seen. i love how her intro quest brings so much validity to the scrap youve been collecting so far as more than just "upgrade points". it really builds up peonys compassion and heroism when she puts in that much work to save the life of a stranger, and the time limit adds so much urgency while still being very generous, at least to my collectathon playstyle. finally i just love her character conceptually. shes a fairy that esentially rides her own iron lung like a mecha. the fact that shes lowkey the best ranged fighter in the game doesnt hurt.
closing thoughts. i was insane about this game when i first played it. like, i cannot bring myself to play anything else because im so enraptured about this game. im talking "oh yeah i guess i havent had a meal today" at midnight. thats how you know that youve got a very special game. also that i am very autistic.

These steps are in no particular order (except the curve tool), I kinda just go with whatever my brain decides to use first
So here is my unedited piece when I finished the drawing itself, I used a really small canvas size here but this will all work for any size:
Next I used the "noise" filter, I more or less use the settings in the screenshot but I play around with it, too
The use of the "multi" here is important especially, it gives the noise just a little bit of color that makes a huge difference
Next is "Chromatic Aberration"

chromatic aberration creates an outline of color around your artwork, it replicates a color distortion cameras can have when the lens isn't focused (according to google). I use the settings in the screenshot but I only move it just a littleee bit, overdoing it here can really overpower the picture so I recommend being cautious!
(Optional) Sharpen
Sharpen adds this jpeg effect that I really like, I say it's optional because sometimes it can be a little overpowering like chromatic aberration can be or just not needed at all (IMO🥸👆) I use this one when I'm going for like, a super compressed jpeg look (better example⬇️)
And finally, the adjustment curve

I'm paraphrasing what I read on reddit about this, but moving the color adjustment curve on "gamma" and bending it down toward the bottom left just a bit moves the colors closer to what old camera colors looked like. All of the other steps can be done in any order, but I recommend doing this one last.

K, lemme make this clear.
I have no issue with people using AI generators in order to just mess around, have fun, and create something for themselves to enjoy. I also have no issue with people using AI as an inspirational tool whatsoever.
However, what I do have a problem with is when people label the generated content art (which it isn't. It's content, sure, but content created from an algorithmic processing of data rather than actual creativity of a living being), try to make money off of it, get mad at people reposting "their" AI generated image (going as far as attempting DMCA takedowns, which legally doesn't make sense since AI generated content cannot be copyrighted due to not being created by a human being), stealing / using artwork without consent in order to "train" an AI (I prefer the terminology "to feed it with data"), and probably worst of all, shit on people who actually put in the time and effort to draw an image (especially if said artists use protection mechanisms like Glaze in order to protect their artwork from being appropriated by AI).
There is so much work that goes into a single piece of artwork, and yes, programming is also work - however, most of these AI Bros seemingly do not program. How do I know that? Well, it's because a lot of them do not seem to understand how the technology they're promoting let alone basic programming works. Probably the best comment to illustrate this that I've read was "we don't need human artists anymore, we have enough AI generated content to train the AIs on" (paraphrased). Which is laughable, because if you actually did that, you'd create a feedback loop that over time results in AIs only ever being able to create a single image (if taken to the extreme).
Seriously, the entire "programming is just as hard as being creative, these artists are SO elitist and gatekeepers" makes me go 🙄 All these people do is stealing human-made content to feed an AI of their choice with it, come up with a prompt (easy, do you know how many ideas I have in a single day??? Too many to let all of them come to life!) and wait for a preprogrammed algorithm to render an image or create a text.
Again, this is nothing against people who just use AI to mess around, experiment, have fun, get inspired, quickly create some wholesome pics to look at, and so on - especially if those people (when they decide to post the AI generated content) disclose this properly. Like with everything, there are legitimate uses to AI that should not be hated on just for playing with AI. Yes, most existing generative AIs were trained unethically, however, the unethical training has already happened. I think what's more important than to hate on people who are really just trying to have fun while not hurting anyone is to prevent it from happening again in the present and future, and to separate them from the AI bros who clearly have way too large egos.
