Chapter 6/Coralie Death Analysis
What I like about Coralie's death is that it manages to be unexpected, and yet cleverly foreshadowed during the events of Chapter 5 and Chapter 6. The writers try to make you believe that it's Helia who's going to die due to her willingness to "put her life on the line" to ensure the mission's success, and how she feels so inferior to everyone else because she has to work 10 times harder due to her lack of Honkai adaptability. But in the end, Coralie is the one who dies. The same Coralie who was angry when Helia said that they should put their lives on the line for the sake of the mission, the same Coralie who couldn't finish reviewing the records of Dreamseeker's dream because so many people died unnecessarily...I could go on. First of all, I'd like to start with how even if Coralie ends up coming back, the feelings that came about as a result of her death are still very real. The people close to Coralie are going to feel immense sadness because, as far as they're concerned, Coralie is currently dead, and nothing can change that for now. Helia already has terrible self-esteem because she keeps comparing herself to Durandal of all people. Ein has already lost Planck, Joyce, and Karl (they sure like making her suffer smh). The grief felt in the moment when the news was delivered to them will not magically disappear. Now, whether or not defeating Litost and winning the Ten Shus War will somehow change that outcome, that's another matter altogether. I’d be fine with her getting revived as long as the reason is good enough.
With that out of the way, let me try and break down why Coralie's death is pretty impactful, even with how sudden it seemed. Let’s start with Helia's emotions regarding this matter. Helia has serious self-esteem issues. She wants to become like Durandal, which is impossible, and yet she knows it's impossible. She just doesn't want to believe it. Even though she herself knows that she can't possibly become Durandal, Helia keeps belittling herself and calling herself a failure for not somehow achieving Durandal-level feats. As Coralie put it, she's a "stubborn perfectionist who's both incredibly insecure and annoyingly arrogant". This entire chapter was basically about forcing Helia to face the harsh reality that she didn't want to accept. At the end of the chapter, when she finally decides to keep moving forward despite all her failures, the Coralie Incident™️ happens. She most certainly blames herself for Coralie's death. She didn't notice the flying sword (which is fair), but because of that, Coralie paid with her life. Helia is the kind of person who will blame herself for everything. Now that she has lost her most important friend, she'll likely undergo a change in personality. Because as far as she’s concerned, her incompetence will cause everyone close to her harm.
Moving on to my favourite part; Ein's reaction to all of this. How will she react? Although we haven't seen much of their relationship, I think that they both mean a lot to each other. Coralie was abandoned (probably because of her mutations) and Ein took her in, and decided to teach her. As we’ve seen before, Ein doesn’t open up or get close to people that easily. So I feel that adopting Coralie was an important event in her life. So…how will she manage to face the fact that yet another person she loves is dead? Unfortunately, I can only base my speculation off of random snippets we’ve had of Ein reminiscing. Maybe she’ll put on a brave face as always, and throw herself into her research to bury her feelings. But I think that’s lazy and unimaginative. I want Mihoyo to show me Ein being vulnerable for once. I want to see her reaction immediately after she receives the news about Coralie. I want to see her crying by Coralie’s hospital bed…thinking back to the time Coralie asked her if she would save her if she was lying on her deathbed.

This leads me to the scene where Einstein's dog is dying (this scene hurt me. Even Ein didn’t know what to say); where Coralie accuses Ein of not understanding the true meaning of life and death because she's immortal. In reality, this couldn’t be further from the truth, but since Coralie was overwhelmed by emotions because her only friend had just died, I will overlook this cruel sentence (I’m joking, I love Coralie). Even though Coralie only lost a dog that day, and not an actual human being, that dog was probably the closest thing she had to a proper friend (before she met Helia). And it made her start fearing the concept of death.
Here, Coralie getting angry at Helia for wanting to put her life on the line. Helia definitely started to realise how cold Coralie’s attitude towards death is here.
Going back to the dog scene, I just want to quickly point out that Einstein does value human lives, just in case people actually believed what Coralie said.
I’m 99.9% sure Ein was the one who told her this. Even if it was someone else, it doesn’t change the fact that Einstein still takes death very seriously even if she can’t die via natural means. She has lost too many people to not understand how precious life is.
Why would the death of a dog cause Coralie to start fearing death and become interested in immortality you ask? Because it made her realise that death can claim anyone’s life in an instant. That, one day, her time spent with Ein will eventually come to an end. After all, “Pale Death beats equally at the poor man's gate and at the palaces of kings.” (AE VN has such good quotes). Coralie probably looks up to Ein just like Ein looks up to her teacher, Emma Planck. Naturally, Coralie would grow to love the person who adopted and taught her. She even says in her bridge voice lines that the bond of family isn’t due being blood-related, but instead it’s the time spent together.
I didn't grasp Coralie’s attitude towards death initially, because the writers are pretty subtle about it. But there were moments in Chapter 5 where she was interested in immortality for some reason. When Chapter 6 came out, it became clearer. Clearly, Mihoyo thought it’d be very funny for the one who hates and fears death to end up dying.
Coralie wanting immortality foreshadowing
More foreshadowing. Here, it might look like Coralie simply doesn’t want to give up that easily. But in reality, if she went straight to Ruimu, she would lose the opportunity to obtain a Jade Plaque and, in turn, lose the chance to become immortal if she wins.
There is plenty foreshadowing in the two chapters, but this post is already long enough asjbsvjkls.
Anyways, I’m pretty sure Chapter 7 will somehow make me sob even more. (Give me Ein’s reaction please, I’m on my knees)
I shall end this on a wholesome note, so have this white screen with Ein telling Coralie to come watch a movie with her. They should have given us a CG damn it >:(
If you've made it this far, thank you for reading the thoughts of an insane Ein and Coralie fan <33

so here is my melkor hot take of the day. i dont think melkor is more evil than sauron.
like yes, tolkien said sauron is less evil than melkor bc he is devoted and obedient to him, i.e. catholic theological legalese, since love and obedience are the catholic virtue things that dont originate from evil. cool. ASIDE FROM THAT.
and like, melkor is totally MORE POWERFUL than sauron by like orders of magnitude. sure. melkor is the evil soup that suffuses the world like original sin and the fall do in catholic theology.
but like if in looking at intent and what they do, i dont think you can say that for sauron's relative power, i hesitate to say he is more evil, but he is evil in a more insidious and dangerous way common to our age.
like i see melkor very much representing the evil of the natural world (and to some degree part of the universal plan of eru iluvatar). he is volcanoes. he is the blight of winter. he is disease and pestilence and decay. he is the coming of darkness, the destruction of creation. the entropy of the universe. he desires the spark or life but can only subdivide endlessly like bacteria.
but that is part of the fallen world in theological terms even if it shouldn't be part of a healed world of immortal quasi spiritual (or actually spiritual) beings. it is imperfection if the goal is deathlessness. but it is part of the world.
and to a degree i see valar as having this sort of impersonal force of nature quality about them. not just melkor. they all do. tolkien describes them like heavenly bureaucrats. they arent tied to the world and dont understand the world in a tangible personal way that even the maiar do.
sauron is different and i think there is a reason sauron is the villain in the books in the second and third age and specifically in the main book he published. he is the evil of our modern world.
because most mythologies dont have two dark lords. one representing chaos and destruction and one representing order and coercion and industry.
it represents a fundamental swing in how cultures started to conceptualize evil. we mastered science and thus a lot of the things that were a curse from the gods were being solved. and yet. the world wasn't becoming less evil. we still want to control each other, to subjugate others. we want to tame nature so much it kills her and makes her barren. we covet power because we are afraid of the lack of it.
so yeah. sauron and melkor are both evil. but sauron was subject to melkor (or natural evils) until we subdued and chained him. and then sauron's evils were dominant.
(is this character analysis or fictional theology? idk.)
i love these characters because they are symbolic of how we conceptualize evil in the world, as well as being stand-ins for a certain character archetype. i dont have to write them just as them being evil. but they are great for writing about difficult subjects because of their symbolic nature.
(and maybe like sauron i too love volcanoes and snow and mushrooms and thus am a bit enchanted with the force of nature that is melkor. i used to study a LOT of catholic theology, and now as an outsider looking in im like, maybe i can play with these myths and tropes. at the same time, the ultimate plan of eru iluvatar is meant to be a mystery.)

Also, I’m just gonna be that person and say it but it had to happen because they both have serious unresolved issues. Aside from all the physics and laws of disorder stuff.
Will needed to be humbled about his sense of entitlement and be shown his true nature in full force. Hannibal tried to guide him carefully and even offered him a peaceful way out, but he didn’t want it. He actively chose violence and righteous vengeance and he needed to see in a chapel of all places, of the degree of destruction that he is capable of. He is destructive. Therefore by his own standards, he is evil. He’s not a good person and he just practically confirmed that for himself. It only took until Abigail dying to see that.
Hannibal has unresolved grief issues that he’s projected onto practically any girl that remotely resembles his dead sister who’s been gone for over 30 years. He never moved on from it and has used his intelligence and spite towards God to quite very honestly, hold onto a childish dream. Even after Abigail’s death, he sought to still reverse time for him and Will. At some point, he needs to understand that Will is right. Shattered teacups don’t pick themselves back up again. Time is not reversible. Entropy cannot be defeated, but instead accepted as part of life and death.
I’m sure these two are always going to need at least one mediator in their lives (most Gothic romance couples do), but there’s a lot of acceptance from both of them that needs to happen along the way. It’s not gonna happen overnight. Or over a fall over a cliff.
And yes. Every sister and daughter they have will always die.
i hate to be the person to say it but "hannigram are together and happy" and "abigail/their daughter is with them" cant be statements that co exist

‘Fucked up that Bill is HAPPIER in Margaritabill than he is in Bill Wins lmao’ PLEASE ELABORATE!
one core feature of bill's character that is stable and consistent in my characterization of him is that bill does not compromise. he wants what he wants and he wants it exactly when he wants it and exactly how he wants it. i've said it before in another analysis but it's apropos so i'll repeat it: bill grew up hearing only no, being only ever denied and rejected, and now that he's the one in charge he refuses to ever hear anything other than yes ever again.
this is important for understanding how i conceptualize what is actually happening for bill's story in each au.
margaritabille follows canon exactly up until the next summer. this means bill has already enacted weirdmagedon, regained control over ford, begun evacuating the nightmare realm, had been defeated, and died. bill wins, however, only follows canon up until gideon makes his final deal with bill. in bill wins, bill is able to do all the things margaritabille is able to, except more. so much more. he doesn't just enact weirdmagedon, he successfully subjugates gravity falls and prevents any rebel faction from forming. he doesn't just regain control over ford, he is able to get ford to submit with minimal fuss and complaint, taking his family hostage to ensure ford is more or less compliant and amiable. he doesn't just begin to evacuate the nightmare realm, he makes tremendous progress doing so.
in margaritabille, bill has lost everything. he has lost the nightmare realm, the henchmaniacs, his kingdom, his control, his influence, his capture of those with the ability to harm him. he is vulnerable. but in bill wins, bill has everything he wants. (well, not everything, obviously bill has bigger plans than just coming to our dimension. but outrunning entropy and gaining a physical form are required for him to achieve the rest of his goals. and now that he's done it, he has no reason to doubt there's anything left standing in his way but time.)
this, however, means that in margaritabille bill has nowhere to go but up, while in bill wins the entire story revolves around not just dethroning him but killing him for good. bringing entropy to him.
in margaritabille, bill has a lot more than he actually thinks he does. he's on earth and out of entropy's reach. he has a physical form. the pines tolerate him and ford is sometimes even nice to him. bill may think he's hit rock bottom, but he hasn't! and maybe, this time, on his rise to power, ford really will join him willingly, maybe the pines will understand his goals and won't rebel against him. maybe there's a way for him to have his cake and eat it too.
while in bill wins, even though bill has peaked more than margaritabille ever did, it's not the life he envisioned. they're still trapped in gravity falls and it's hard to fit all the nightmare realm citizens into one tiny place. even if bill had been king of the nightmare realm there are still other gangs and warring factions that butt heads and challenge him. he needs to manage all the big personalities until he can break open the rest of the dimension and give everyone their space back. ford may play along with him but he's dead-eyed and bitter, obviously puppeteered, reciting the lines he's memorized. if bill had wanted ford this way he would have just rewired his brain in the first place! no, he wants ford to want it, and he can't figure out how to make that happen. the pines are constantly rebelling against him, so he's having to play 5-d chess and mind games with each of them in different ways at different times and it's a headache to keep up with it all. this isn't the party he wanted, he's on-call 24/7. (although, dw, he's still doing a lot of partying, but it's more coping than celebrating.)
there's a light at the end of the tunnel in margaritabille. in bill wins, bill is rapidly hurtling towards the ground without a parachute.
in margaritabille, bill is grieving a future he never really had. he didn't take the massive loss that he will in bill wins. he will never lose as much in the first as he does in the second. margaritabille is about how no matter the hardship, no matter the struggle, no matter the suffering, there is always a tomorrow for those willing to watch the sunrise.
in bill wins, bill is grieving a present he never got. it's a be careful what you wish for situation. he is fucking around and will soon be finding out. the more he tries to force things into their proper place the more they warp and misshape and try to wriggle from his grasp.
in acceptance and commitment therapy there's a framework for understanding acceptance that i think characterizes the two story lines well. in order to accept something you must be willing; we experience suffering because often we are instead willful.
willingness is the ability to say yes to life, however it comes. the example i give my patients is marriage: you know you and your partner will fight, you know you will both get sick, you know one of you will die first, but you marry them anyway because not having them at all is worse than having them bad parts and all. you are willing to live through pain in order to live through joy. i recently told a patient in order to have memorable experiences with friends you will also have funerals.
willfulness, on the other hand, is living life conditionally. it's trying to draw a perimeter and put up walls between you and what you will and won't accept. one metaphor for this i like is the shoe problem: you buy a pair of shoes online, they arrive and you discover they don't fit. if you are willing to accept the pain and frustration of this experience, then you're able to move forward to resolve it: can you return them? can you exchange them? if not, do you know someone they will fit you can give or sell them to? can you sell them online? can you donate them? if you are willful, however, then you will not admit there's a problem. in avoiding the disappointment of not getting something you really wanted and were looking forward to you force your feet into shoes that don't fit, you put them in your closet to collect dust.
in margaritabille, bill is moving towards willingness. not intentionally, not purposefully, but simply through conditioning. he's squatting in the shack and is unwelcome, he is aware of this. ford still has the means to kill or banish him, he is aware of this. if he toes too much out of line, the comfort and safety he has taken for himself will be his undoing. in order to live at the shack and be tolerated by the pines and build rapport with ford, bill must be willing to give up some of his control. he has to stop attempting to dominate the world and subjugate the pines, because if he does ford will just shoot him and that'll be the end of it. bill knows he has a good thing going here and he's not going to jeopardize it. he knows there is a future for him, he just has to grieve his loss and get back on his path.
in bill wins, bill is willful to a T. he will only accept the dimension, earth, gravity falls, the pines as he wants them. he doesn't understand why the nightmare realm citizens are behaving in ways that cause him headache, he doesn't understand why ford is faking it, he doesn't understand why he's trapped. he knows why, but it's not how this story was supposed to go and he will keep slamming the pieces on the table until they fit in the puzzle where he believes they're meant to be.
and he will lose everything, and he will suffer the whole time he does.

one fascinating thing about the Princesses is how often they echo the mindset that motivates the Shifting Mound.
Shifty/Felina is someone who is convinced that she is what she is, that the totality of her being is something that cannot be changed or denied. There is no compromise, in part because there is nothing to compromise-she simply is, you simply are, and this is how things are.
Communicating with her using words pre and post awakening is difficult-words are difficult for her. They never quite weave into what she wishes to say. She often resorts to flowery metaphors, unable to use imprecise and unnuanced language to say the things she wants to say. When frustrated by the player or by this issue of communication, she often falls back on how there is no constant, there is no center, everything exists in relation to everything it isn't and vice versa, "nothing" is a concept that exists because there's "something", and how can we even begin to talk about the inherently contradictory, multifaceted aspects of our existence when language cannot account for it?
Precisely because she dislikes words, and feels she has to fall back on metaphor for them to have any meaning, she values action more than anything-more specifically, she values conflicts. She values the ins and outs, the victories and defeats, things ending and breaking only to be reborn. This also ties into the Shifting Mound as a force of entropy, change, and death-she is what she is, viewing death and fear and pain and change as necessary parts of the world, and what's needed to improve yourself.
She loves it so much, loves the player so much, finds it so romantic, that she often refers to it as a dance. Conflict as music. Something beautiful and timeless to be adored and made over and over and over again in a billion different styles across a billion different times and places.
This is all basic Shifting Mound analysis, and it's important for establishing a baseline of Who She Is (without getting into what her Heart versions say, and why there's incongruence there-that's a different post! we can definitely go deeper) Because...every single one of her vessels reflects one or more of these aspects of Felina.
The Damsel line is all about TSM's connection and adoration of the player, how she loves the player even at their very worst and comes up with the most loving poems for the most horrifying things. Even when killed, she decides to return the favor with a smile and with your hand in hers. Damsel's deconstruction refers to the end of the world as "unleashing unceasing entropy upon all creation", Happily Ever After wants nothing more than to leave and dance, and even wears TSM's crown and takes similar poses to the dance Felina has with the player in the Leave ending.
Prisoner is once again about the failure of words, being able to communicate without them, or find hidden meanings. So much of Cage involves both Princess and Voices having literal understandings of the situation, and twisting it for their own ends, along with the natural fall into conflict-and that conflict being beautiful. Drowned Grey is beyond words, instead letting her own corpse's appearance and blank stare speak for her. She's also got this idea of destruction as something necessary-she's perfectly fine, even happy, being nothing but a head and losing her body completely. When that doesn't work, the cabin breaks down on its own, and its destruction is unambiguously a good thing.
Razor's a blatantly more meta route where you manifest a knife for your enemy to kill you with. Razor in both forms is about going through an endless stream of trials until you are about to embrace godhood, either being pushed into another very romantic conflict-the ebb and flow-or rising about it to break her against yourself. It's a beautiful parallel to Shifty herself, this unstoppable force that will never change, and where the relationship only changes because you're able to rise against it.
The Nightmare is about how she simply is what she is, and she can't change that. Fear and death and horror are necessary things to keep the world running. Noteably, Nightmare doesn't want to end the world so much as "hold it in her hands and squeeze." Nightmare doesn't see bringing death and destruction and most importantly, fear as an ending, but a new beginning, and an inevitable part of her nature, just like her fully-awakened self.
Spectre is one of the routes that plays a lot with perception-you think she's dead, so she is, and in Princess and the Dragon, she is both dead and alive until the metaphorical box is opened by an outside observer, schrodinger's cat style. Like the Shifting Mound, she personally chooses to see the best in the player until proven otherwise, and even then, is inclined to embrace violence as a natural part of their relationship if pushed down Wraith or the Stenciled version of Princess and the Dragon. Shifty, Damsel, and Spectre want nothing more than to be with you.
And Tower wants nothing more than to be with you, too...as a goddess while you sit by her side as a pet, or at best, a priest. The Tower princesses are arguably the ones that get closest to godhood, to being what the Shifting Mound and therefore all of the Princesses are. They're held back by their inability to treat the player as an equal, and there's definitely an argument to made for Felina's own arrogance and assumption that she can never be wrong, so you must concede to her. Tower and Apotheosis in particular are delighted by the player's acts of resistance, much in the same way the Shifting Mound gets excited when you're able to successfully resist her. In terms of personality, I'd argue this line shares TSM's general attitude and behavior the most.*
*Tower-Fury is different from the rest of her line in a lot of ways, such as actively disliking the player's resistance, but keeps the divine arrogance even when she believes it's been denied to her, and is genuinely upset it has been much in the same way a certain pre-awakened someone doesn't take kindly to the Oblivion paths.
The Adversary line, similarly to Tower and Razor, once more involves that core belief of conflict between the two of you specifically leading to greater and greater heights. If the Tower reflects TSM's overall attitude, Advy is a reflection of what TSM tries to get at with metaphor-Adversary in all of her forms finds no use in words, only purpose in action, but will still literally cry from joy if this action is compared to a song written in blood. Both Eye of the Needle and Advy-Fury share this trait, with Advy-Fury deriding words as things that "aren't music. They aren't dance. They aren't feeling." TSM shuts down arguments that nitpick her language much in the same way the Adversaries are uninterested in language period, while also using the same language Of song and dance and music. And, while ambiguous, you could say the Leave ending, the endless joy of being with TSM as the world dies and is reborn over and over, presents a similar dynamic to the end of Adversary, where the two of you fight each other over and over with such fervent passion death itself no longer sits on your shoulders...
Stranger's so meta and so obviously a mini-Shifty, it almost feels like a waste to talk about how she's Shifty. A billion realities colliding into one, parts of them dead, parts that don't fit...even pre-awakened TSM says she's in the shape of her, but is unable to hold everything she is.
Witch brings our favorite dance metaphor back right alongside stories about love, change, and growth. While the Witch herself is a wretched little thing, in her own words, she contains so much potential to become something beyond that. Witch, Nightmare, and Razor are all some of the more playful sides of TSM. I feel like things get really interesting in Witch's chapter 3s, ESPECIALLY the Wild.
That's one where you and the princess are literally merged together, right where she believes you belong, and are so, so close to getting everything she wants before the nature of the construct and TSM kick in and the walls close. I can't do a playthrough where I intend to leave with TSM without getting the Networked Wild as a vessel-it just feels that important to Felina as a character, to see what her pre-awakened self describes as a literal shadow of herself, a much more vulnerable version, and for her to be right there...while Tower/Apo feels closest in terms of godhood and attitude, and Stranger feels closet in terms of what she physically is and experiences, Wild feels as though she's the most similar to TSM's inner heart and feelings, right down to the buried parts of herself that still want to get violent.
And then there's Beast/Den. You've probably heard this one from Nightmare and Razor before, get ready to here it from the lion's mouth this time: I am what I am, fledgling. There is no reasoning with that. Adversary says she's beyond words while still happy to use them-that's more than fine, TSM loves poetry despite (or perhaps because?) of her frustrations with language. Den literally gets to the point where she's beyond words. This is a princess who doesn't care for the pretenses that she's a normal, human, mortal being anymore, a princess who embraces everything she is and wants, and who will always be happy to show you exactly what she means...through biting you biting you biting you biting you biting you saving you from a collapsing tunnel biting you <3 Once more we see that repeating motif of merging with the princess, being one with her. Once more we see how badly the Shifting Mound wants to be with us, by any means possible, through the lens of her vessels.
Anyways I think it's really neat how these Princesses are all full-fledged and deep, nuanced characters in and of itself while still contributing to the gestalt of another woman who is made of all of them, and helping to inform her characterization as much as their own. It's like Slay the Princess is insanely well-written and good or something.
#ALRIGHT HERE'S THE BIG ONE#NO REREADING THIS DRAFT IT'S ONE AM I'M PUBLISHING IT RAW.#gonna reread and hate myself in the morning when i inevitably spot the typoes lol <3 ANYWAYS#slay the princess#shifting mound#analysis#shlong talks#edit: did some minor typo/formatting fixes!#ty to finalexpenses for pointing out i used the gilded cage line on Tower when it's nightmare that says it!#i meant it in a metaphorical sense rather than a Princess quote but considering how often i use princess quotes here as direct examples#it doesn't make sense to use what doubles as Another princess' quote to discuss Tower.#so that line's been replaced with one that references you being her pet or priest.#that's the only major change on this post ty everyone. bows

Hi, im sorry if this violates no nsfw but i thought i might try coz its been an old meme; delete if you dont want to ans it, no pressure!
I've come to make an announcement: Shadow the Hedgehog's a bitch-ass motherfucker. He pissed on my fucking wife. That's right. He took his hedgehog fuckin' quilly dick out and he pissed on my FUCKING wife, and he said his dick was THIS BIG, and I said that's disgusting. So I'm making a callout post on my Twitter.com. Shadow the Hedgehog, you got a small dick. It's the size of this walnut except WAY smaller. And guess what? Here's what my dong looks like. That's right, baby. Tall points, no quills, no pillows, look at that, it looks like two balls and a bong. He fucked my wife, so guess what, I'm gonna fuck the earth. That's right, this is what you get! My SUPER LASER PISS! Except I'm not gonna piss on the earth. I'm gonna go higher. I'm pissing on the MOOOON! How do you like that, OBAMA? I PISSED ON THE MOON, YOU IDIOT! You have twenty-three hours before the piss DROPLETS hit the fucking earth, now get out of my fucking sight before I piss on you too!
tbh i'm not going to be super strict about the no nsfw thing, but i also don't entirely trust the internet and wanted to make sure no one would submit anything truly vile. this is more comedic than anything else though, so you're all good!

if you've been here long enough or have a general idea of what proteins are supposed to look like, i'm sure you could write this analysis from looking at the picture for about two seconds. all i have to say is this: why is it so spread out??? the answer, of course, is that all of the many polar and charged residues are way too hydrophilic to make anything real, and instead are just flopping around uselessly with all the water. proteins were never meant to have this much entropy, and this chaos is downright infuriating

Hannigram and Physical/Sexual Intimacy: Novel To Show (original post: 9/14/24)
ite frequently think about the development of Hannibal and Will’s overall relationship and one aspect that many ppl seem to have discourse on is will Hannibal and Will ever have a more physical and/or sexual relationship. This has been ongoing for well over a decade and quite honestly even the show runners nor the actors themselves are quite sure.
In terms of concepts of anything sexual in the show, more of than not it’s portrayed metaphorically and/or symbolically in the form of undertones and innuendos as this is the show’s nature. Literal sex and physical intimacy also do exist, however it always has a deeper meaning to it that may not always be so nice. Often it’s associated with darker elements like manipulation, trauma bonding, and desperation and is used as a tool as a means of influence. In other words, sex is never going to be portrayed simply for the sake of sex.
An interesting concept a Hannibal podcaster brought up about Hannibal and Will’s current state of physical intimacy is that Hannibal often utilizes touch as a means to ground Will when he is unstable or in a state of distress. Even when pain is involved, Hannibal is always very tender and loving in his touch. It’s part of his love language. I never realized the concept of grounding in his touch before, but I found myself quickly agreeing to this analysis. It’s also important to note that until TWOTL, Will never initiated touch with Hannibal, thus symbolizing the progression in their relationship. So what happens next?
I’ve always felt that though a sexual relationship would be okay between these two, it wasn’t entirely necessary since killing together is the most intimate experience they can have. They have their minds and their dark urges to drive this relationship, so why would they need literal sex? But as I go back into the end of the novel that is Hannibal, I found that there’s a particular scene that stands out to me that could actually be masterfully recreated into a sex scene if Bryan wanted to.
For book readers, I’m referring to the scene where Clarice confronts Hannibal about trying to imprint Mischa onto her thus successfully bringing her back from the dead. Clarice discusses his unresolved grief with him and offers her breast to him, thus ending his long years of desire to fight entropy and find a way to reverse time. He prefers the teacup to remain shattered and still. He accepts this is his best possible future and lives his life with Clarice.
Technically speaking, a large part of this conversation already took place between Hannibal and Will during the Europe arc, but instead of acceptance, what came to Hannibal was harsh rejection and his desire to reverse time only amplified. Mads has said that by the time of TWOTL, Hannibal wouldn’t want to reverse time anymore since he got Will in the end, but this relationship is only just starting. I could think this lifelong obsession will pop up again sometime given that Mischa is still inside his mind and always has been. It’s why he created so many surrogates over the years. And he still thinks about some said surrogates quite often.
My thoughts are a few things can happen. I think that as Will becomes more accepting of himself and becomes a prominent figure in his life, Hannibal’s obsession with reversing time will dial down significantly and he’ll find peace with himself in this new life. However, since Hannibal isn’t a show about happily ever after, I could think the universe or rather God will test his will in all this as well as his lifelong obsession to reverse time to create another Mischa. And knowing how dark things can get, probably in the brutalist way possible.
In regard to the hypothetical sex scene itself, thinking of the novel’s plot as well as the nature of the show, I can’t imagine that it’ll happen under happy circumstances. I imagine it being initiated by Will as both a form of touch that’s meant to ground Hannibal in his time of crisis and also to act as a means to comfort him in his newfound radical bittersweet acceptance that time does not reverse, but Will is here to stay. So long as the teacup remains shattered, Will will continue to stay.
I have my own personal theory on how such a massive existential crisis could happen with Hannibal, but let’s just say that the Ouroboros has not yet bitten its own tail. When it finally does, there is a lot of pain to be had, but a lot of room for Hannibal and Will to grow together.
In the end it’s not the sex scene itself. It’s more so about what the sex scene is about.

classpects....? o.o (am watching from a corner w binoculars)
THE 'AURA EXPLAINS HERSELF' SEGMENT OF THE SHOW
right. a bit naive of me to think no one would care enough to ask. i must warn you, what you're watching is a crash site, my friend. or a confessional scene. your pick. either way, welcome
so, firstly, i'm still assigning titles to siffrin and loop as a pair here and secondly, i'm going by classpect inverse rules for them just like before. a surprise tool that will help us later
in my previous assignment, i made siffrin a mage of doom and, conversely, loop an heir of life. i've since moved on to greener classpect pastures but let me explain myself on this wild pick first. i'll tell why i've done this:
i stupidly mixed and matched domains of time and doom aspects in my head ✌️
mostly that. some of it was also really wanting loop to be the heir of life because that's like the epitome of a progress-providing guide they end up being and it seemed really funny. but most of it was time and doom being unfortunately deceivingly similar to me. happens! i guess! in my defense, they really are quite similar, if you really get into it, aaaaand doom has the entire thing with sacrifice and being a cosmic joke - but at the end of the day, there's more time elements there sighh. a bit embarrassing that i'd defended my train of thought so valiantly but i was, in fact, incorrect. we move either way
so my main defense was that mages learn through experiencing all parts of their aspect and, by the end, possess enough knowledge to self-actualize. and doom is largely about entropy and things passing, and letting go. also rogue of doom did not fit them at all so mage was the thing that made most sense
but yeah, the more obvious title of the rogue of time fits siffrin better, y'all we're right, i'm ready to admit it, fine
time is mostly about death and passing, but the thing that evaded me in my initial analysis was that it's very much about endings too. and siffrin, subconsciously, steals away the end again and again. some other rogue of time propaganda:
firstly, their ability of speeding up the party is a huge point towards that, i can't believe i somehow forgot about it. passing on the turn less so, isa can do that too, but the point stands that they literally redistribute time in favor of their party. secondly, duhhhh time travel, not much to add here. thirdly, seeing doomed versions of yourself is. yeah. very time-coded. similarly, having your fckin time clone just hanging around is. time-coded. speaking of.
you know what is the most important here, though? the thing that made me rethink my initial analysis?
MAKING LOOP THE KNIGHT OF SPACE IS EVEN FUNNIER THAN THEM BEING THE HEIR OF LIFE
so knights, other than their usual quests and tasks, and business with their own aspect, are meant to help the space player create the universe frog in the game. but if the space player is the knight, they're So Screwed. cosmic joke type of character. can't catch a break. everything on their shoulders. it's so funny to make loop that, and when i realized that rogue of time inverses into that, i immediately started thinking that hmmm you know maybe it does have some merit......
so yeah, thank you loop for bringing me over to the light side with your sheer propensity for tragedy. i took the scenic route but we're here now
oh yeah mira is still a knight of breath and king is still the prince of hope. idk about the others yet even if odile immediately seems to signal either mind with her. entire thing. or heart with her search for identity. and isa has some page-ism about him maybe, and bonnie feels? like they'd be rage, and it'd pair nicely with the king's aspect. but idk, not yet lmao
anyway thanks for listening to my penance, have some doodles i made when figuring it all out as i was messing around with an old brush
#honest to god embarrassing. just a bit. whyyy was i so hung up on that? but hey we live and learn#in stars and time#isat spoilers#isat siffrin#isat loop#in stars and time spoilers#in stars and time act 6 spoilers#two hats spoilers#cosmic soundwaves#isat#auroodles#i guess#long post

Gale’s Analysis: Why Eggman and Sonic are perfect Archenemies
Now in a lot of cases Video game nemesises and Archenemies can seem strange. Like plumber and turtle king, Crocodile and Ape, bounty hunter and Space dragon pirate. Just to name a few. So Speedy hedgehog vs Mustached Robot scientist isn’t the most out of pocket.
But I would say there is no arches that match the perfect clash of ideals and approaches.
Sonic is the embodiment of freedom. He loves nature, he is naturally fast, impulsive, and wants others to be as free as he is. In a sense, Sonic is Anarchy incarnate. Or a better word… Chaos. Which explains why he can wield the chaos emeralds power so naturally.
Eggman is the Embodiment of Enslavement. He loves machines, and often mechanizes/pollutes nature. He is meticulous, scheming and building intricate machines. And he often utilizes Natural resources but harnesses them with technology in ways that are harmful, and often this leads to things backfiring. Eggman HATES rebellion and free will. He wants all the power, he is Tyranny incarnate. Or for a better choice of words… he is Control incarnate. Which is why his plans often end up going wrong.
Their clashes over the chaos emeralds actually show more of this.
Sonic collects the emeralds to stop the doctors plans. He utilizes them to transform by harnessing them naturally. Often using the positive energy of the emeralds.
The doctor is the opposite, he takes their power to power his machines harnessing them for his own nefarious purposes. Often utilizing which ever energy showing how uncaring he is about natural order.
And the irony of the phrase “Chaos Control”. A paradox that embodies Sonic and Eggman’s clash.
A battle of natural entropy vs Artifical dominance.

How much/quickly do you think AI is going to expand and improve materials science? It feels like a scientific field which is already benefiting tremendously.
My initial instinct was yes, MSE is already benefiting tremendously as you said. At least in terms of the fundamental science and research, AI is huge in materials science. So how quickly? I'd say it's already doing so, and it's only going to move quicker from here. But I'm coming at this from the perspective of a metallurgist who works in/around academia at the moment, with the bias that probably more than half of my research group does computational work. So let's take a step back.
So, first, AI. It's... not a great term. So here's what I, specifically, am referring to when I talk about AI in materials science:
Most of the people I know in AI would refer to what they do as machine learning or deep learning, so machine learning tends to be what I use as a preferred term. And as you can see from the above image, it can do a lot. The thing is, on a fundamental level, materials science is all about how our 118 elements (~90, if you want to ignore everything past uranium and a few others that aren't practical to use) interact. That's a lot of combinations. (Yes, yes, we're not getting into the distinction between materials science, chemistry, and physics right now.) If you're trying to make a new alloy that has X properties and Y price, computers are so much better at running through all the options than a human would be. Or if you have 100 images you want to analyze to get grain size—we're getting to the point where computers can do it faster. (The question is, can they do it better? And this question can get complicated fast. What is better? What is the size of the grain? We're not going to get into 'ground truth' debates here though.) Plenty of other examples exist.
Even beyond the science of it all, machine learning can help collect knowledge in one place. That's what the text/literature bubble above means: there are so many old articles that don't have data attached to them, and I know people personally who are working on the problem of training systems to pull data from pdfs (mainly tables and graphs) so that that information can be collated.
I won't ramble too long about the usage of machine learning in MSE because that could get long quickly, and the two sources I'm linking here cover that far better than I could. But I'll give you this plot from research in 2019 (so already 6 years out of date!) about the growth of machine learning in materials science:
I will leave everyone with the caveat though, that when I say machine learning is huge in MSE, I am, as I said in the beginning, referring to fundamental research in the field. From my perspective, in terms of commercial applications we've still got a ways to go before we trust computers to churn out parts for us. Machine learning can tell researchers the five best element combinations to make a new high entropy alloy—but no company is going to commit to making that product until the predictions of the computer (properties, best processing routes, etc.) have been physically demonstrated with actual parts and tested in traditional ways.
Certain computational materials science techniques, like finite element analysis (which is not AI, though might incorporate it in the future) are trusted by industry, but machine learning techniques are not there yet, and still have a ways to go, as far as I'm aware.
So as for how much? Fundamental research for now only. New materials and high-throughput materials testing/characterization. But I do think, at some point, maybe ten years, maybe twenty years down the line, we'll start to see parts made whose processing was entirely informed by machine learning, possibly with feedback and feedforward control so that the finished parts don't need to be tested to know how they'll perform (see: Digital twins (Wikipedia) (Phys.org) (2022 article)). At that point, it's not a matter of whether the technology will be ready for it, it'll be a matter of how much we want to trust the technology. I don't think we'll do away with physical testing anytime soon.
But hey, that's just one perspective. If anyone's got any thoughts about AI in materials science, please, share them!

"load cell" - akon & mayuri
a prompt i sourced from @aitheria - akon and mayuri in canonverse, disagreement
The smell of burnt hair was strong first thing in the morning, warm bitterness singed keratin. Late night turned early morning in a windowless lab room, running on ethanol fumes and the adrenaline of all-night assessment and analysis. Kurotsuchi had been adamant that such-and-such cause would have this this-or-that effect; Akon had been dubious.
Of course Mayuri’s science was solid and his protein synthesis was beyond compare, his amalgamations of amino acids an art form in and of themselves, but new horns having gone to his head, Akon had decided to test him. Countered with his own concentrations and ratios, proposing the perfect enzymatic equilibrium. Math theory a little half-baked for sure, but that wasn’t the point. Audaciously disagreeing, he dared to voice his doubts outright at the beginning of the night.
And it was with no small amount of smugness that Akon suggested they move onto the next test subject after the smoke had cleared. The specimen they had been working on was little more than charred flesh briquettes after so many hours and so many attempts. The systems couldn’t handle it; they’d essentially incinerated themselves in the process, helpless against the force of Mayuri’s high-octane entropy.
Akon carted off their burnt remains and dumped them into the hazards incinerator. Cleaned and sanitized their work station while Mayuri dragged purple fingernails down his notes. Inspired annotations made in the margins in green ink. Akon unlocked the lab and headed into the hallway to retrieve their next cadaver from across the way.
Nemu was still there waiting outside the door, hands clasped, even after glass had smashed into the wall beside her when she’d dared to ask how Mayuri was doing three hours ago. There were still shards in her braid. Akon pitied the infantilizing concern she was helpless to give him, beaten down at every opportunity. As of this moment, he realized as she watched him, he had become a victim of her scrutiny as she’d automatically deemed him a threat, honed in low on her frequency. His opposing Mayuri had been interpreted as ever so slightly dangerous, his disagreement a challenge, a hindrance to her master’s health.
To be fair, Akon had been at it for a while.
They were designing a brand-new cadaver lab – sterile steel tables in rows, strategically placed drains in the insulated floors, lines and wires carefully coiffed at each station. Akon had not agreed with the arrangement of utensil cabinets in relation to the sinks and fume hoods. Mayuri had not listened. The secondary computer lab was in need of an overhaul – new motherboards and crystal displays. Mayuri had refused Akon’s proposal of a gridded multi-screen display in favor of something more streamlined. Mundane even – the second floor meeting room needed a new layer of paint, and Akon had preferred a color three shades darker than Mayuri.
Superficial, and they had argued in light, unserious tones. Measuring the flow of their disagreement by pupil dilation, tool angle, and the pressure of fingertip presses against the plunger of a syringe. It had been gentle needling acupuncture on their beliefs and morals, Mayuri’s ego. It was harmless, essentially. But this experiment, this night, was something that mattered to his captain, a real intellectual passion. It held weight when it felt like a step closer to enlightenment, advancement, stimulation, and doubt from Akon was a shot at his pride and his scientific integrity. The intensity with which his captain worked through the night had been charged and intentional, almost defiant.
Akon gave Nemu a semi-sympathetic look as he pushed the cart forward towards the large specimen storage unit. He adjusted the inventory with his initials, signed his name on a new materials request and checked out the subject profile before even unloading the cadaver. Meticulous, still, for he valued integrity as much as this game.
For years, Akon had been a child to Mayuri; an apprentice, a student, a fledgling under his wing. But he was grown now, the undeniably appointed third seat with an intellect and independence that could finally be acknowledged and appreciated by his captain. Akon felt he had earned this right to disagree, to finally give voice to his own opinions and ideas. Arguing for the sake of it, just to see what Mayuri would do. Testing him with his own set of criteria and expectations, a reactionary reagent.
So far, it had been trivial. Mayuri pulled rank and moved on, scoffing or clicking hollow yellow teeth, enamel rattling. Bristling, but not brandishing anything that would harm. It had been fun to watch him realize Akon’s autonomy, discovering the sort of man he was deciding he wanted to be. Letting him have his refusals and rebuttals and enjoying the way he spoke to him as a comrade, still allowing himself to be berated by choice and station.
Akon was smug as he locked up the storage unit and moved back across the hall with their new materials, Nemu still watching him like a loyal bird of prey.
“Here we go, captain,” Akon said once he’d anchored the table back down, locking casters in place and attaching the appropriate sensors and wires. The stimulant was prepped for the central line, set aside so his captain could have the honors.
“And who do we have here?” Mayuri asked, raking his hands over the corpse in stasis, assessing the skin, the ridge of bone just beneath. Akon read from the file all the facts he knew his captain wanted to hear.
“Excellent,” Mayuri grinned with renewed vigor. Fresh fingers scooped up the syringe and stuck it into the polyvinyl tubing. While the body reawakened and the systems found their natural rhythms, Mayuri beckoned Akon back over to his desk.
“We’re using the delta formula this time,” he said with a voice as tight as a tripwire. Akon swallowed and watched as Mayuri titrated the sample, dialing in the next concentration. The delta mix had been Akon’s formulation, scratched out on that piece of paper like a hasty IOU. Akon could see it, trash-can wrinkled but laid out on the page of Mayuri’s notebook and held flat in the corners with a pen and a glass shootie of diluted morphine.
Victorious self-satisfaction was bittersweet, watching Mayuri kneel to his own weakness of needing to know. Akon hadn’t genuinely doubted him, but it was a pleasant surprise to see things not going Mayuri’s way, which they both knew was part of the allure of their work. Even if it annoyed him, irritated his pride, Mayuri couldn’t help but respect the audacity he had to disagree with him, and he couldn’t risk not knowing the truth just because of his genius. If there was a chance Akon was right, he would have to take it.
It would be a necessary factor in their future endeavors together. Either Akon would be right, and their knowledge would advance, science would continue marching on, or he would be wrong, and Mayuri could have the satisfaction of berating him for it, and all would be right with the world. With several vials of the new formula prepped, the body on the table began to stir, fingertips fighting the frozen fear of long-term sedation. Mayuri turned towards the table, and Akon took up his place at his side as they began anew.

could you please do an analysis on the sylph of time?
Sylphs and their enabling ways <3
class = character arc and aspect = base personality traits
Sylphs are the passive counterpart to Witches, and, like Witches, their powerset revolves around "changing" their world. Where a Witch manipulates what's already there, a Sylph's ability to change something is additive - they grant it more of their own Aspect. Thus, their powers most commonly manifest as healing or buffs, and Sylphs are, by nature, quite nurturing individuals. Both Kanaya and Aranea share this trait - Kanaya is well-known for her "mothering" tendencies, which Hussie outright comments on in the book commentaries, while Aranea is constantly offering to heal people, and when she flies off the handle, it's in a misguided attempt to nurture/heal the timeline into the new alpha timeline.
However, this naturally caring disposition comes with two caveats: the first is that Sylphs pick and choose their favorites, and if you aren't in the Sylph's good books, then you're functionally worthless to them. Sylphs represent a dichotomy of kindness and cruelty. There are those that they can't help but lavish attention and kindness onto, and they don't really care whose cost it comes at. This ties into the second major caveat: that Sylphs are massive enablers. They're naturally drawn toward strong personalities, and they can even be pretty pushy in their pursuit of these personalities' attention and affection.
You see this cruelty in both Kanaya and Aranea, though Aranea's a bit more obvious about it. She actively mocks people on her team that she doesn't like - she makes fun of Latula's inability to smell and Cronus's belief in wizards and magic (basically his only positive trait), and is shockingly callous towards Damara - even going so far as to thank her for her role in the Scratch, saying they all got to "live out their wildest dreams" on Alternia, even though most of her teammates suffered horribly and died in awful ways, ESPECIALLY Damara. Kanaya's tendencies in this regard are a lot less obvious, but, for example, she actively mocks and bullies Eridan to his face - to the point that this is how she flirts with Rose. There's also the matter of actively trying to kill Gamzee while he's still Karkat's moirail - and while Gamzee may have earned it, the fact that she apparently wants to do so even without accounting for Karkat's feelings on the matter (which are obviously "don't kill my moirail") still speaks to the Sylph's tendency to simply not give a shit about the feelings of others. And that isn't even touching on the way that Kanaya specifically seems to help Tavros along just so Vriska - whom she has a red crush on at the time - has a chew toy to play with.
Aranea is also incredibly guilty of this. She pretty clearly has feelings for Meenah in one way or another, and constantly downplays Meenah's bullying and cruelty. In her, we see a Sylph at their worst - entirely self-serving, they strive to fill their world only with things they like, treating others as props or toys that exist either for their pleasure and amusement, or to be discarded as unpleasant or unworthy. Their worldview is fundamentally selfish and ego-driven, masked by the Sylph's "nurturing" nature. They're usually not directly the problem, but they exacerbate existing problems if they aren't challenged and forced to grow beyond this childish mindset. Once they do, however, they're able to apply that powerful ability to heal and nurture where it's most needed, providing a safe haven for the party to retreat to and the ultimate supportive power in everyone's growth and actualization.
Time players, on the other hand, are driven and persistent. Time is associated with struggle, goal-orientedness, minutiae, details, tasks, processes, entropy, and, of course, time itself. Time players are the grand taskmasters of the game, and all four of our time players show this attentive, determined nature - for all Dave's disaffected coolguy persona, he's the one who pays the most attention to what's going on, remembering all of karkat's rants even as he makes fun of John for caring, and picking up on subtle hints about his destiny to kill LE. When we see him on the meteor, he's almost never idle, practically always working on his "art" somehow, even as he's spiraling into despair. Aradia is also the first person to make mention of some conspiracy she feels is hanging overhead, and it's implied that she's been incredibly busy behind the scenes doing LE's dark bidding at the behest of the Handmaid - Damara herself also working tirelessly to sabotage her timeline in order to bring about LE and his reckoning on her team. And what does Caliborn have if not persistence? Dirk calls him out for paying more attention to his sister's SBURB rambling than he pretends to.
At a toxic overabundance of their aspect, Time players can grow frustrated and destructive, spinning their wheels in overdrive in such a way that they begin to damage the structure they belong to. Damara is the greatest example of this, her rampage being so thorough and so absolute, but Aradia's violent and futile anger when given emotions back in her robot form after dying stick out as well; Caliborn, too, became so impatient that he killed his own sister, stunting his own growth and turning his game into a void session. Time players may also burn out entirely - they can easily become so overwhelmed by their perceived duties and a sense of futility that they lose track of the bigger picture (all the worse because Time players tend to lack Space's grasp on interconnectivity, and feel the need to take burdens on alone), and choose to detach entirely - a refusal to act that resembles Space's passivity. Time players have a tendency to flounder when they have nothing to work towards, and must learn to give themselves space and permission to breathe, reorient, and ask for help.
So a Sylph of Time takes form. I see them as something of a life coach, combining Sylphs' nurturing natures and Time's focus on task completion. They probably enjoy making to-do lists for people, and perceive themselves as someone who helps others be their best selves by boosting everyone's overall productivity.
The kind of person the Sylph is drawn to is not necessarily one that aligns well with their Aspect, or even one that appreciates their meddling. In fact, given the Sylph's fascination with strong personalities, and a Time player's focus on struggle and perseverance, it's very likely for them to be drawn to someone dangerous and unstable, who outright dislikes the Sylph's interference. In a more malignant case, I wouldn't even be surprised if the Sylph of Time's method of lavishing attention onto somebody is to deliberately make life more difficult for them - to throw them into challenges and watch them deal with them. Time, after all, has associations with struggle, destruction, and entropy, and Sylphs are naturally callous.
In this way, a Sylph of Time is more naturally prone to directly making the situation worse for everyone. Under the guise of helping others achieve greater heights, they'll deliberately engender difficult situations that could have been avoided. They may drive people to productivity of such levels that people start to burn out. As Homestuck has a soft magic system, the specific form of their abilities and influence depends heavily on the work they're in, but this is the overall "vibe" that this class would entail.
That being said, if the Sylph is properly confronted on their poor tendencies, and realizes how bad an influence they've been, the Sylph of Time could become a powerful actual agent of productivity and efficiency. Their abilities let them buff or heal others via their Aspect; in the case of Time, some potential applications that stand out to me are: closing wounds by fast-forwarding them or rewinding to before the wound was inflicted; granting their teammates a buff that slows down time around them, letting them do much more in a shorter period of time; granting a teammate some of Time's attention to detail, letting them view some past event in their lives with Time's clarity, in order to reach some grand new epiphany.
Every Class and every Aspect has the potential for great harm or great benefit. Hope this was interesting!
