It's valentines day.

yesterday I wrote him a letter. it was a two page (1154 word) document about my attachment issues to him and separation anxiety. I didn't include anything about being attracted to him, or the full grasp of. yk. obsession. but I wrote it and I sent it out over email.

I also bought flowers for the teachers. really, I just wanted to give some to him. that would be too weird though so I got some for all my favorites. I gave them to him first thing I saw him in the hall and he thanked me and ran off.

after a painfully average English class it was math. he came right up to me and grabbed me shoulder to whisper to me that he read my email and he wanted to talk to me and my therapist about it later.

after that he actually spent the majority of math class with me instead of the dude I don't like! he sat and helped me and at one point just let me copy odd the teachers guide thing and told me to hurry and not tell anyone. we had some good quality time together!

the next few periods were just sorta ehhh okay. I actually got some work done for the first time in a few weeks lol. and I didn't cry today! I've cried everyday since my birthday ngl.

about half way through biology I was told that my therapist wanted to see me. so I was pulled aside to go to her office and me and her spoke about it.

understandably he had forwarded the email to her because the teachers kinda have to with things like that. and she actually congratulated me on having the courage to talk about it and sending it. generally she seemed pretty happy and it was awesome.

twords the end of it she pulled him from his class so he could join the conversation. he seemed to share the same sentiments that it was really brave of me and he understood but he only has so much time and couldn't focous all his attention on me because he has other students. which I understand. he actually did reassure me that he wasn't going anywhere and even sometimes stayed in contact with students when they leave.

the only bad part was that my therapist kept making it sound really strange and emberassing me. like okay YEAH I'm totally in love with the guy but I didn't tell them any of that shit! I'm pretty sure she actually thinks I want him to be like a one on one teacher or just adopt me or some shit. but without context it was just. UGH.

some of the real things she said include "I understand the want to have something more" "he's a teacher and you're a student and it's sad but it can't be more" and "I understand the jacket might have been confusing because of the implications" UFHAHHAAAAA IM GONNA TEAR MY SKIN OFF

after that he was happy to give me some documentary recommendations and the rest of health class was nice with him. he gave me a sticky note of documentaries.

one other aspect that really troubles me about comics is how difficult it is to keep track of the historicity of certain decisions in regards to characterization. this is obviously a generalized problem with mutable texts, though the volume of those have lessened in the past what? two centuries? ever since we started printing books for real i suppose, and i've come to expect it from comics given that the nature of their story building shares a lot of characteristics with the oral storytelling that gives birth to those other, older mutable texts (this is all guesswork btw i know fuck all about literature).

but it does trouble me particularly because it's so jarring against its setting. it feels counterintuitive, almost. the technological disagreements are very easy to resolve imo. it's not really that the technological landscape hasn't changed much since 1939, it really has, but what it impacts the most are the mechanics of the story, not necessarily its logic (i can be persuaded otherwise with a simple good point, im very partial to the idea of technology redefining mentalities (if that can be said to exist at all yadda yadda wtv i just can't think of a better word), i just don't think this is reflected in the writing just yet, at least not deliberately or i haven't picked it up yet).

what feels like it has really undergone a change to me, or at least morphed in pretty distinct ways, are the social (and cultural ig but ehhh) modes available to the characters and the frames of reference by which we're meant to judge them, which do not always align. for example, batman has seen the beginnings, consolidation, interrogation and decline (?) of the idea of the (middle class) nuclear family in its twentieth century conception as the modern american ideal of familial organization. this ideal, whether it is rejected or accepted, in all its varieties, is present in the characters' outlook and worldview, even if it is to be found piecemeal in issue after issue, and you know it's important because half our cast are fucking orphans. it matters, at least as a reference. it impacts their self perception, their goals, and their idea of what is correct, achievable and desirable (which again might not align at all).

but how am i meant to address it in the context of the idea of comic continuity and an overarching narrative that resets itself every few years? you can choose a block of continuity, of course, and that's the easy choice, but then that negates everything outside that block and it maligns your interpretation of it given that you're cutting yourself off from pieces of information that resignify it or you lie to yourself that you're not taking them into account when you really are and that's just. useless. my preferred method of deciding characterization is pick and choose. i read and i pick what i like. but i keep my eye out for repeating patterns, because i think that's where the concretes of a character are made. i think that's generally the best way to keep yourself flexible enough to maintain the character's malleability of spirit, which makes them feel and act more human.

but you see my problem now. if every version of an idea belongs to a certain time (and we can stay here talking all day about periodization, but let's not), then how do i decide which one my character is operating at? does that date him? does it date me? does it date only the text? and if so, am i beholden to the text? and if am, where does the text end? the issue? the run? the block of continuity? it's not that i don't realize these are all separate choices i can make myself, it's just that i am troubled by the fact that i am making them without the appropriate consideration. it feels like im juggling four timelines at once.

all this to say, i've been pondering recently bruce's relationship to family wrt his orphanhood, and how that interacts with and informs dick and jason's ideas and desires for a family. because i've realized that impacts a lot of my writing and how i set up a relationship, because of the expectation of a future with each of the characters and how they imagine it. and also because it impacts the way they look at each other and it amps up the angst. thank you for coming to my ted talk?

Its surprisingly easy to adapt the story into this au... exchange the castle for an overgrown cathedral, make the castle servants members of the cult instead, and you've got a pretty good start.

Of course, castle servants as cult members easily complicates things; how does one make a situation Adam would want to be free from without villifying what is essentially his found family?

"Cult" in this context is used closer to its antiquity definition than the modern one. The worship of its god was once much more widespread, but it failed to come through in some time of need and has since lost following [thus the large, yet delapedated cathedral]- the current cult being those that still hold faith, despite it all.

I dont think I need to elaborate on how a group of people devoted to a god that the majority of the populace believes has abandoned them would the desperate sort lol.

So when one find an infant abandoned in the woods, with beastly traits that resemble their god, wrapped in cloth of higher quality than anyone in the neighboring villages should be able to afford,

They're going to take it as a sign.

More than a sign; that's a demigod, or an incarnation, and praise be it might even be a messiah.

The boy gets taken in joyfully by the old gods devotees. Had these people been proper nobles, there'd be very little difference to what his life would've been as a prince.

Adam is raised with the weight of a gods responsibilities on his shoulders.

The cult is kind to him, very, they love him dearly-

That he will one day, it not now, but hopefully soon, aid them as the god he supposedly is.

Make up for the mistakes of the past.

Except he can't. [Yet, is hoped]

Besides the natural results his beastly traits have, he lacks any divine power. And the older he gets, the more worrisome it is.

Perhaps, they try to reassure him, he doesn't need to be a living god. He's here as something else, a specific moment where it will all come together-

But he doesn't know when or what that would be. And of course, they dont either.

A precise moment is much easier to screw up than a whole lifetime.

His relationship to the old god he is supposedly successor to is.. complicated. Usually, though, he's bitter.

Adam is old enough to hold power as an authority in the cult, and thus far he's used it to keep the cult, and himself, closed off. He's not willing to present himself without being sure he wont dissapoint. As time marches forward, he gets moodier and antsier. More temperamental under the stress.

Because time has not told, and he is no closer to fulfilling his birthright than he was as an infant. Maybe he used to be content helping as much as mortal could when he was younger- but he's older now. He's supposed to be *more* now. But he's not, and it enrages him. He may even be becoming paranoid...

That is, of course, due to the fact that he is not Divine. His beastliness is of another source- and even if it was from a god, it wasnt in a way of making him one to.. any extent.

But he doesn't know this. And nor does the rest of the cult.

Now, taking on responsibility for things beyond and persons control and thinking you need to fix it all on your own is traumatizing in itself. And it is easily enough to result in him being the bitter, stand-offish, ill tempered guy Belle first meets [truly, sometimes all that's needed is to let someone be in their own head a Little Too Much].

But I'm a maximalist, so we're gonna fuel that fire a bit more. Remember Maestro Forte? If he had the respect and authority over the cult that he wishes he had, it would very easily be a cult in all modern sensibilities. He's working on it though.

Now, having their god come to them in the form of an infant (perfectly malleable to his whims if he plays hus cards right)- woulf be GREAT!! if the kid had any damn power. Its going to show up *sometime*, surely, but Forte is getting Impatient.

Luckily for him, so is Adam.

Forte takes the place he does in his Canon appearance, someone to confirm all of Adam's Worst Thoughts and make him Worse- but here we have the added addition of "Experimental Rituals to shortcut Access to Divine Power" !!

[Done secretly and privately, mind you- the others would Certainly object.]

And now I would like to introduce: there are triggers to cause Adam to become more beastly, in a form of iffy semipermanence.

One little instance to awaken that extra bit of beasthood won't keep longer than its cause, but to do so in repetition?

And when the beastly traits are the very thing that made people think he was divine?

Adam has a good repitoire of scars, and looks bit less human than he used to ♡

But none of these efforts have revealed any divinity- just more beast.

And by the time he Meets Belle, hes already started considering running off into the woods or something, because hes not sure how many more Experimental Rituals he can take, and if nothing else just to stop seeing the *Dissapointment* laced with *Pity* in everyones eyes.

[Forte is the only dissapointed, the rest are just *worried* about him. Because he's clearly spiraling, and despite how hard they try they cant get through to him- he pretends they do, but they can tell hes just placating them. They also have no idea whats causing the growth of more beastly traits, but with how bad hes doing- they're doubting its anything good.]

Belle is a girl that is *very* interested in the anthropology, specifically the mythological, religious, folklore, cultural types of aspects. In this context, of course, these are all Pretty Real, not really in antiquity- Gods are Gods, but they are also Real Historical Figures- but you get the picture, both in area of study and the vibes she kind of has. [She has likely, on multiple occasions, been shooed off by a priest for not acting reverant enough & her questions coming off a tad too disrespectful]

She is very curious, very passionate, and *really* doesn't understand the whole "respect = no questions" thing.

And Boy, when she meets Adam? She's aboutta maks this man question his Whole Life.

And I'm thinking the Enchantress comes in as an interaction that triggers Adam to start Really Spiraling, under the idea that hes actually on some sort of time limit-

anyways, ultimate fate of this au is that Belle helps Adam realize that he doesn't need to carry things alone, and that hes not Divine, and help him through the identity crisis That entails-

Also subplots about the cult members, as they are [for the most part] [aka Except Forte] earnest devotees, driven to worship an absent God by the one thing that can truly drive that; helplessness and desperation. Adam's knowledge of these pasts is part of what drives him into further spiraling- so I do want to explore what they are, and since I'm a sucker for happy endings; theyre gonna get their happy endings/resolutions too♡

Hello! It’s the anon who sent you the ask about Gojo’s POV a few days ago. I meant to respond earlier, but life has been kicking my ass recently, but I’m here now.

I get where you are coming from with Death of the author. An old friend of mine is a writer, so I’m super familiar and have had a lot of discussions about the topic. I ask for your opinion on that stuff because I’m super interested in the way you see things as the writer behind the series, not that it colors my perspective at all. Also never apologize for going on a whole thing about your story, I really love reading your responses. So please, I would love to hear you talk more about Intrinsic Warmth, I’ll probably send you more questions when I reread it. ��

I think my main interest in Gojo’s POV is that we get a different perspective of life and the story as a whole from someone different than Hebi. I adore Hebi and the way she’s written, but it's nice to see what Gojo is thinking in certain scenes - in scenes where Hebi’s complete lack of self-esteem clouds her vision. You did an excellent job in making things very slight, but enough to pick up on what other characters *might* be feeling.

I definitely could've missed something in my read through of Intrinsic Warmth, I’ve only read it once (I’ve re-read a few chapters), but I really mean to go back and reread it in full once I get more time for myself. I’m also someone who is really bad at absorbing all the information, so I’m sure I’ll definitely get little hints and signals to where Gojo is “showing” Hebi he really likes her and both me and Hebi just miss it completely. I think another reason why I missed a lot of Gojo's little tells of "I like you Hebi" is because I read Intrinsic Warmth in essentially one sitting, so I was in Hebi's mindset for quite a while (which I find super interesting from a reading perspective).

Personally, I found Intrinsic Warmth through Gojo’s POV of 2007 on here and read it without context. I was *so confused*, because I didn’t know about The Chapel, who Hebi-Hebi was, why Gojo was having a little fantasy about this character, what fight they were in. After doing some searching I found Intrinsic Warmth and read it. So I think when I read it on AO3, I was always sort of looking for hints where Gojo was in love with Hebi and I really thought maybe 2008-2010 they would confess because it reached an explicit warning. Boy,,, was I wrong about that explicit warning AND the confession. So I think the way I was thinking is that Gojo realized he had some sort of feelings for Hebi in 2007, and just decided to do nothing with it because of what happened between them.   [ I, also, thought eventual smut would take place in the chapel, it just felt like such a secret place to the two of them ]

When I've been writing my Gojo POV things, I kind of consciously didn't write many things that were actually directly in IW--the one exception was when he remembers half of the scene where they first met, but other than that, it's been stuff in-between the chapters. I've liked it, because for once I've been able to write something other than tHE SEVENTH OF SEPTEMBER, but even then I've amused myself by leaving some things very ambiguous. It does just make me laugh, but the whole, 'ehhh this is set sometime in winter, probably between these dates, maybe i'll give you a year if i'm feeling generous' just makes me giggle.

I might go back on that rule and double up the perspectives for some scenes, a la the first scene, once I'm a bit further through IW, though. I'm not sure, you know??

But hey, if you do fancy a reread of IW, you can absolutely read it through a very nice fluffy lens of 'yo my girl does not understand that Gojo is DOWN BAD' which makes some things very funny and some things lowkey tragic, lol.

2: Do you focus on attention to detail when you read fics? Are you more or less attention to detail focussed when you write fics?

when i read? ehhh, fairly? there are some pet peeves i have that are in the grand scheme of things, inconsequential and tiny little details (zim isnt allergic to WATER hes allergic to the POLLUTION IN THE WATER) but other than that its just, i dont notice any "discrepancies" ig on my first go-around but if i read, say, a multichapter multiple times i start to notice things like character inconsistencies and plot holes, but if i read it that many times it means i already love it, and those things wont stop me from liking it still

and my fics have way too much fucking detail in them i could make a whole post about the music scene in annexed. im making a conlang. someone stop me. the weird thing is i have a good deal of oneshots that bank on Telling You Fucking Nothing (trials, for one, and one im sitting on for now)

this one is a very "it depends" thing, honestly. i sure do prefer thinking up long multichapter epics (like annexed) but i have more fun with quick n dirty oneshots but its like. fuck it! im gonna do annexed anyway and i think ive found a style that basically makes every scene kind of like a oneshot so theres that at least? wrt reading, i love me a good multichapter but some multichaps kinda lose me at some point, but some are fucking amazing! even when i like a multichapter, theres usually a part i deem my "favorite" and i just read that chapter/those chapters over n over again lmao, take of that what you will

B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?

Not like directly, but I definitely put some of my influences into them. Like Yugi wanting to be a knight in The Beast Within was 100% because I used to want to be a knight lmao. 

F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

Ohhh off the top of my head? Gosh mmmm. Okay so off the top of my head there’s this one scene in an AU I’m probably going to abandon actually, so it’s kinda ehhh to show it now and tease u all like this lmao, but I did really enjoy writing the interactions between Yugi and Atem in them, so I’m going to put one of those for this! I just like the way they butted heads and Atem refused to relent, but then so did Yugi so they just tip toed around each other looking for the weak spot while referring to ‘the pharaoh’ as if it’s someone else and not Atem lmao. For context, it’s from an AU where everyone is an anthro animal, felines are considered the high ranking ones, spotted cats (Yugi’s species) is endangered and highly revered, Atem is a lion.

“You’re under the protection of the pharaoh, and as such are to remain in the palace where said effect can be carried out.” Atem answered as dully as he could manage. It seemed to work, as Yugi’s expression dropped.

“That order can be extended and revoked by the pharaoh himself should he wish. Do you think the pharaoh realises that? I wonder…” Yugi clicked his tongue, a thoughtful hand tapping his chin.

“I believe the pharaoh wishes for the spotted cat to remain within the palace walls, where he would be safest. I wonder if he realises that he could have servants fetch anything he needed from the city.”

“He wants to go look at what the city has to offer. With his own eyes, not those of servants not belonging to him.”

“You have your own staff I have assigned to you.”

“They’re not loyal to me.”

Atem paused, finally giving his full attention to Yugi. So that’s the kind of game Yugi was playing today. It seemed he had slipped up, however, and Atem wasn’t beneath taking advantage of this blunder.

“You question the good intentions of the pharaoh, who has given you his place as residence while asking nothing of you?” Atem tsked, turning back to his scroll, attention slipping from Yugi. He knew that would irritate the little cat, and sure enough, Yugi gave a soft growl in warning.

“I do not question the pharaoh, only wonder if he remembers whether or not he will honour his agreement.”

“What agreement?” Atem rolled his eyes.

Yugi pushed off the desk, slamming a hand down on the table, tail lashing angrily behind him. “You cannot keep me locked up here, pharaoh. Protective rules or not, if I leave, you cannot stop me.”

“No, I can’t,” Atem responded calmly, adjusting the scroll in his paws. “But you lose my protection if you venture into the city. You go alone.”

"I will be going into the city, pharaoh. And you will provide me with the necessary guards."

G: Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

I tend to write random scenes around as I get inspiration for them, but mostly I write it chapter by chapter to keep it consistent! But if I’m in a slump, I write scenes that I had the motivation to work on, even if it’s for like three chapters ahead. I did this a little with my Big Bang fic because I had a deadline and needed to be working on it lmao. Fun fact tho, The Living Daylights I started off with the opening scene from chapter nine! Yeah nine chapters in right crazy ahaha, but that was what inspired the AU! xD

H: How would you describe your style?

I dunno? Semi-decent descriptions enough to understand locations and a fuckton of travelling montage work and fighting scenes. I couldn’t tell u dude I dunno my own style lmao.

A naga!Yugi and vampire!Yugi AU that I’m writing, buuuuut they’re both for my smut blog, where I post them exclusively, and I’m not going to move them to AO3 either soz (anyone is welcome to IM me for the link to the blog, but it’s on private so access is message only lmao).

Magic AU, which u can find some snippets of here! I don’t plan to take this further than a longshot, even with the potential for more there, I just don’t have the time for another fantasy AU world to build rn lmao. But I hope to have something of this to share soon!

Lion Atem, which I gave the snippet of above, where they’re all anthros. I never wrote much for this, and although I liked the concept, I don’t think I’ll work on it anymore. Maybe I’ll post the 6K I wrote just as a ���read if u want but don’t expect more pls’ kind of thing. But yeah, at this stage this one is p much discontinued because I don’t have the time to work on it. 

And that leaves Elf King Yugi, something that has definitely been on the back burner for MONTHS now (ever since Trial and Error, so u do the maths lmao) which I have written a fair amount for, but need to do some serious plot work before I consider doing more. Since there is a chance I’ll continue to work on this one tho, I’ll post a snippet here!

"You know the council isn't going to like this Yugi. You're in for a long and dangerous fight with this one."

"I know Anzu- you don't need to treat me like a kid." Yugi scolded her with a quick frown.

"I'm just warning you. Be prepared to argue into the night."

"I am- believe me." Yugi groaned, a hand rubbing his forehead as if to still a headache.

Yami tittered at the edge of the room near the door, unsure if he should interrupt what looked like a conversation (or argument) between friends.

Luck wasn't (or was) on his side though it seemed, as Yugi took that moment to crane his neck to where Yami was standing, his eyes lighting up. Yami suppressed a groan as he waved him over. Yami stepped lightly, his steps hesitant as he approached the two.

"Oh wow Yugi is this him? Your narcissism is showing with this one." The girl’s eyes gleamed with something predatory, like she was sizing up how long Yami would last in... Something.

"Would you please stop saying 'this one?' It implies I do this frequently- which I don't." Yugi said, shooting Yami an apologetic look. "This is Anzu- she works at the castle here-"

"You forgot to mention I'm your best friend." Anzu said in a sing song voice. Yugi shot her a look this time.

"Yes, and you're my annoying best friend." He turned back to Yami. "She's going to give you your tour, alright?"

Yami nodded. "Where are you going?"

"I have to go to court today. We'll see each other later, my dear Yami." Yugi smiled at him, reaching out to pat his shoulder as he passed him, disappearing out of the room.

Yami turned back around to immediately jump in surprise.

Standing way too close for comfort in front of him was Anzu. She had a wild grin on her face, like she knew a secret Yami didn't.

"Well well Yami. Looks like it’s just the two of us for the rest of the day." She practically purred.

"Uh... Okay... Should I be worried?" Yami frowned, not liking the glint in her eyes. It's like a maze of demons here, Yami observed. You turn away from one only to find another.

"Not at all," Anzu hummed, patting Yami's shoulder. "We're all friends here I assure you. Yugi wants me to take extra good care with you. And I must say- I can see why. You're a keeper."

"A keeper?" Yami's frown deepened, and he suppressed a sigh of exhaustion. Just what have I gotten myself into here? He was beginning to seriously regret his decision to break the elves' border seal now.

"Never mind." Anzu waved him off, trotting over to the door only to swing back around, her hand on the handle. "You coming? Yugi wants you to see the castle."

"Oh, right, of course." Yami muttered, following Anzu as she made her way out into the hallway.

"Alright, first things first- unless Yugi gives you public permission to travel around, don't go anywhere without an escort, okay?"

"Why? I'm not a kid." Yami scoffed.

"Mmm, technically you are to a lot of these folk. Most of the population in the kingdom are elves, and they tend to be a lot older than they appear."

N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?

LMAO YEAH REALLY WISH I DIDN’T HAVE TO WRITE THE REST OF PRINCE AND KING BUT WELP IT’S MY FIC AND I’VE COME THIS FAR SO I GOTTA FINISH IT RIP. I just reaaaaaally crave the day I can slap a COMPLETED on it :’’’’D

O: How do you begin a story–with the plot, or the characters?

The plot! Mainly because fanfic so the chars already exist lmao. I usually start with one thing that catches my interest, and work out from there. Sometimes my AUs start from dreams, like Demon Prince started because I had a dream Yugi was a demon in jail trying to seduce Atem to come work for him so lmao there u go. 

P: Are you what George R. R. Martin would call an “architect” or a “gardener”? (How much do you plan in advance, versus letting the story unfold as you go?)

I’m much more of an architect, because without a decent plot written out in front of my, in like a chapter by chapter format, I will easily lose motivation and focus because I won’t have a ‘oh yeah that’s what’s happening next!’ sort of thing. It helps with building up foreshadowing and stuff too for me. The stories I try to ‘gardener’ for I guess are the ones that often don’t see tumblr or AO3 lmao. AKA u will never hear of them because I have a few lmao.

Q: How do you feel about collaborations?

Interesting question! I suppose it depends what kind! I like collaboration ideas, in fact my first multi chapter fic The Living Daylights was a collaboration in ideas between me and my pal Ren! But I still wrote the entire thing lmao. I guess I like to have control over the writing for style consistency, but I think tackling the entire concept with another writer would be fun! I’ve never tried to write something with someone else so I dunno how that would go!

T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?

[kinda nsfw] INNOCENT PURE YUGI MUTOU WHO MUST ALWAYS BOTTOM FOR ATEM BECAUSE ATEM IS SEX GOD AND YUGI IS VIRGIN WHO KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT SEX. Listen nothing rustles my JIMMIES more than that that troupe which is EVERYWHERE in puzzleshipping. I don’t understand why it’s so popular??? Like, this isn’t to say Yugi 100% CANNOT bottom because he totes can! But of ALL the puzzleshipping I’ve ever read that involved smut, especially in multi chapter fics, Yugi topped like... once, maybe??? ???? That’s SO MANY fics where Atem almost NEEDED to top. It kind of feels like people were too scared to write it at times? Like some stories I could totally see it either way, but it was ALWAYS with Atem topping, always. I don’t really understand why people are so against Yugi topping in puzzle but auuuugh I just wish there was more of it u know? Like if I want top Atem material shit man I got hundreds of fics for that, but top Yugi? Man, I can list them on my fingers...

(this is the one I picked myself lmao) I like really specific ones! I like to know exactly what I’m writing, and unless I get a burning idea in my head I’d rather do (not often) I’d prefer prompts that give me more to work with, or at least more detail than like a one line simple prompt lmao.
