Okay so having a really quick play about with Ellipsus, loving what I'm seeing so far.
1 - FOLDERS (suck it, Google Docs). And SUBFOLDERS!!!!! (I just really love folders okay don't judge me)
2 - The draft management actually looks fantastic. Need to investigate it a little more but really impressed with that (being able to side-by-side, lock scroll, AND the merge function looks great? Being able to give them designated names??)
3 - Really easy document navigation using the headings and outline feature. The main reason I don't like doing longer documents in Word, takes a bit of a faff. This is as easy as selecting a heading and BAM done.
4 - I don't do a lot of collaborative writing but this looks like it would be amazing for that. There's comments, collaborators, but also a CHAT feature. Makes me think this could actually be good for RPs as well as story collaboration if folks wanted, especially people who like to convert RPs into stories after the fact.
5 - Exporting work looks quite easy. Buttons for PDF, rich text - and also HTML! That could be really useful for AO3. Definitely going to give that a try with my next fic.
6 - The phone UI seems pretty nice as well, which is huge for me as I love getting some words in when I can't sleep or am hanging about waiting for something.
I wish I had the brain power to actually DO some writing right now but I don't lol. Excited to give this a try though after I've had another 30 or so hours sleep.

what writing program do you use?
I use LibreOffice, a free open source word processor. It's very customisable, I change my document bg to medium grey so that my eyes don't hurt. It saves documents as .odt by default
When I was finished a book I would open it in Word to run a spelling and grammar check as Word used to have more sophisticated proofreading abilities but the last time I did it it was absolute tripe due to increased implementation of ai. I also use Word to format the pdf for printing
To turn the .odt document into an epub novel i save as .html and open in Calibre to format the ebook. You can then read it using google books or apple books on ur phone
Other programs I've used/tried:
Google docs - the only reason anyone should use this is if they're writing cross platform in which case it can be useful. Hands-down the worst spelling suggestions out there and stupidly lacking in functionality on mobile
Bear (iOS) - it's nice if you like markdown and only exporting as .rtf files in the free version. Works well, stores documents offline, and uses a nice tag system to organise stuff. I wrote all my Siren prose in this
Scrivener - overcomplicated and distracting
Discord - honestly prefer it when writing cross platform over gdocs, sometimes I'll write a paragraph or so on mobile and just paste it into my libreoffice when I get home. My pc is immovably large & I don't own a laptop
Word (for writing) - if you click & drag to highlight text in libre, it will highlight only the exact letters you selected. Word has a fun feature where it makes assumptions about what you REALLY wanted to do and tries to fight you on it. Fuck Word

If you've seen the post circulating around that HR9495 - the bill to strip nonprofits of their tax-exemption - is a credible threat to AO3 and to download your fic, you may or may not be going 'oh fuck'. This might be because 9495 is a fucking abominable document...or it might be because you're like me and you have far too many fics to download one at a time.
Well, this is a bit quicker-and-dirtier than the post I'd planned on making next month, but as it's needed now:
Bulk Downloading from Ao3
Nianeyna has a program up on Github that can download Ao3 fics in bulk. You give it a starting URL (such as the start of your Bookmarks, or someone else's Works page) and tell it to either stop at a certain page or to keep going until it downloads the whole range. If you don't have code experience, that's fine, the linked page has a basic walkthrough on how to download and initialize the program.
Now, if you're also worried about fiction on other sites too...
Downloading from Fanfiction.net, SpaceBattles, SufficientVelocity, QuestionableQuesting, & More [WITHOUT Embedded Pictures]
Have you heard of FicHub? You have now.
FicHub only goes on fic at a time, and if you try and feed it too many URLs too quick it'll time out and you have to wait a bit to let it 'cool down', but it was the first program I encountered that could not only download fics from FF.Net, but also the forums where the Worm fandom is found.
Plus, that's not all it download from. To quote FicHub's site:
Supported Sites SpaceBattles, SufficientVelocity, QuestionableQuesting (XenForo) FanFiction.net, FictionPress Archive Of Our Own Harry Potter Fanfic Archive Sink Into Your Eyes AdultFanfiction.org Worm, Ward Partial support (or not tested recently): XenForo based sites (Bulbagarden Forums, The Fanfiction Forum, Fanfic Paradise) Fiction Alley The Sugar Quill (largely untested) FanficAuthors (minimal) Harry Potter Fanfiction (archive from pre-revival)
One thing I really like about FicHub is that it doesn't default to EPUBs. Like how Ao3's built-in downloader gives you file options, FicHub lets you choose between EPUB, a zipped HTML file, MOBI, PDF, and a 'sharable link to this export' which I've never used but sounds nice.
The downside of FicHub is that if a fic has embedded media - pictures, for example - you don't want to be using FicHub as it won't embed the picture. All it'll do is embed a link to were the picture was supposed to be drawn from. However, this isn't a concern for most-all FF fics as well as a good chunk of stuff from other sites. Just be warned that if you want media embedded, you want the next tool.
(You'll also want the next program if downloading from a forum and the OP who's fic you're downloading has a gigantic signature box: for some reason, FicHub adds the signature page to the bottom of each chapter in the document you download. Fine enough if it's a line or two, annoying if it takes up a page or more.)
Downloading from AlternateHistory.com, SpaceBattles, SufficientVelocity, QuestionableQuesting, & More [WITH Embedded Pictures]
This time we're looking at a Firefox addon: WebtoEpub.
According to its page, its download options include the following:
Baka-Tsuki.org (obviously) ArchiveOfOurOwn.org Blogspot (some) FanFiction.net. gravitytales.com hellping.org krytykal.org moonbunnycafe.com mugglenet.com nanodesu (some of the *thetranslation.wordpress.com sites) readlightnovel.com royalroad.com shikkakutranslations.org http://sonako.wikia.com And many other web sites.
It only downloads EPUBs, but if you're trying to grab a fic that has facecasts for characters, or maps, or anything like that...well, this actually grabs the pictures.
However, brief tip: I don't know how it is for any of the pages it actually lists, but if you use this for a fic from AH/SB/SV/QQ - the forums listed in the header - you want to open the page and then click the button that opens the whole index of threadmarks, and then call the function. If you don't do it that way, it won't know the full range of posts.
So, yeah...
While I hope HR9495 dies and isn't passed, it's better to prepare than to not. Even if it doesn't pass, I lived through the NC-17 purges on Fanfiction.net and saw thousands of fics vanish into the abyss; and I've seen authors delete fics or their whole collections off of Ao3 too. All that's taught me that I can't rely on just going to a bookmarked fic and expecting it to be there; if I want to be able to find and reread anything into perpetuity, I need to have a copy downloaded.
Hopefully this helps some of you download up the fics you want to have on hand, too.

Toyhouse for My Multiverse
So, I was able to get a toyhou.se account and discovered how I can make pages with HTML, and thanks to Fantasia Archive and their Markdown exporting function (There is PDF but I want to try something new), I can start making pages on characters, setting, and lore.
Archive of Our Own and Deviant Art have been developed for my Multiverse story "In the Star-Gazer's Garden" and a few spin-offs.
Tumblr and Twitter are carrying some lore but I need a solid site that carries all the lore and characters.
I will be quite busy working on this and thus affecting art streams roleplay threads with mutuals, and so on. I'll find the time to do these, but I have priorities along with work and IRL stuff.

Hey! So I saw this a while back and was intrigued, on account of I am indeed looking for a google docs replacement that isn't enshittified by AI. Here's what I've found:
It's an in-browser word processor! It's not a very fancy one, but it's got all your standard formatting options and a nice big blank page to write in.

[screenshots are all captioned in alt text]
If a white void is not your jam, you can flip the whole site to dark mode. These are currently the only display color options, if that's a concern for you.
Only the document owner can edit the main document. Collaboration happens in drafts:

The card for each draft will show who created it and icons for who's active in which draft at that time. (By default your icon appears to be the first two letters of your email. You can change that but I haven't.)
If you're thinking "wait so is this like forking code?" Yes! A draft is created with everything currently in the main document, and then you or your collaborators can edit from there.
When you're ready to merge the changes back in to the main document, this is what you see:

This is an all or nothing merge! Anything you don't want folded into or deleted from the main document needs to be correct in the draft you are merging.
Once a draft is merged, it gets locked, and remains in the document dashboard for reference or in case you need to return to an earlier version.

You can also use the drafts off-label for notes, links, saving cut bits, etc. (Just don't merge those faux-drafts!)
Backing all the way out, your main dashboard has all your folders and documents, all documents shared with you, and some straightforward search, notifications, and settings icons.

A couple other features:
Basic spell check in seven languages + US, UK, and CA English that's only on when you turn it on, and working from a dictionary not whatever crowdsourced shit google's doing these days
Document chat and draft comments
Export settings to download a pdf, copy as HTML, or copy as Rich Text
Version history
An outline view, if you've used headings
You do need a free account to create or collaborate on documents, but only an email was required to sign up. You can additionally generate a read-only link that can be viewed without an account. It's very much still growing, and the fork/merge drafting process is a little different than what I'm used to, but overall I've been liking it!
Back when we started Ellipsus (it's been eighty-four years… or two, but it sure feels like forever), we encountered generative AI.
Immediately, we realized LLMs were the antithesis of creativity and community, and the threat they posed to genuine artistic expression and collaboration. (P.S.: we have a lot to say about it.)
Since then, writing tools—from big tech entities like Google Docs and Microsoft Word, to a host of smaller platforms and publishers—have rapidly integrated LLMs, looking to capitalize on the novelty of generative AI. Now, our tools are failing us, corrupted by data-scraping and hostile to users' consent and IP ownership.
The future of creative work requires a nuanced understanding of the challenges ahead, and a shared vision—writers for writers. We know we're stronger together. And in a rapidly changing world, we know that transparency is paramount.
So… some Ellipsus facts:
We will never include generative AI in Ellipsus.
We will never access your work without explicit consent, sell your data, or use your work for exploitative purposes.
We believe in the strength of creative communities and the stories they tell—and we want to foster a space in which writers can connect and tell their stories in freedom and safety—without compromise.

I've started using Ellipsus to test out what features it has (and what seems to be missing). So far, my impression is pretty favorable.
It does, unsurprisingly, require you to create an account to use the site, so if you're allergic to yet another account, that's a strike, I suppose. It seems to have a fairly solid set of editing and formatting tools, and allows you to export to downloadable PDF or as HTML or Rich Text copied to your clipboard. Collaboration tools appear to be baked in, although I haven't actually used that feature yet.
Call me cautiously optimistic.
Since the whole thing with NaNoWriMo has gone down, I've noticed that one of their former sponsors, Ellipsus, has cut contact with NaNoWriMo because they do not support their stance on AI; I didn't know what Ellipsus was, but upon further research I've found that they are a writing platform that works a lot like Google Docs and Microsoft Word, only with a heavier leaning on the story-writing aspect and connecting with other writers - and they also completely denounce any use of AI, both in the writing process itself and in the use of their platform. I really appreciate that.
Since this is the case (and since I've noticed Google has begun implementing more AI into their software), I've decided to give Ellipsus a try to see if it's a good alternative to Google Docs (my main writing platform). It's completely free and so far, I've found it simple to use (although it is pretty minimal in its features), and I really like the look of it.
I figured I'd spread the word about this platform in case any of you writers would want to give it a try, and if you do, let me know how you like it!
