The Bates were well known around Hawkins, very religious and very powerful. They had a lot of money and donated the community constantly. They had high hopes for their daughters, however that changed when Frankie (then known as Amelia), expressed that they were a boy. Of course they tried everything to stop them believing it. Telling him that he was a girl and always would be.

That was the end of their relationship. When old enough he moved in with his aunt on his father's side. She supported him through everything and even helped him with puberty blockers and starting on testosterone. He could be himself and he was finally happy.

Because of how everything happened, his relationship with Violet dwindled. Though in later years they have slowly begun to reconnect even if their relationship was still strained.
