bio:
Michelle Renee Green was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Mary and Josiah Green on August 8, 1979. Born and perceived by the world as a boy, Micky struggled throughout her childhood with coming to grips with who she was, as well as understanidng that in a place like Atlanta, and in a family like hers, acceptance wasn’t something she’d find easily. From a young age, she always wanted and sought her family’s approval, wanting nothing more than to make them proud as their only child. While her family wasn’t poor by any means, they didn’t live a lavish or luxurious lifestyle. Her father, Josiah, owned and operated a farm which Micky and her mother were expected to help maintain and keep running smoothly. It was his farm business- milking, producing various meats, eggs, and vegetables- that kept the family afloat and in a comfortable spot monetarily.
Though Micky loved working with the animals and enjoyed the look of accomplishment and pride in her parents’ eyes when she completed her chores or overcame a particularly difficult task, she couldn’t help but to feel out of place. Each week with her allowance, she’d sneak down to the General Store and purchase the latest fashion magazines and the newest shades of eyeshadow and lipstick, hiding them in various spots around her room to enjoy when no one was looking. She’d dream of one day being and living as her authentic self.
School was always something Micky excelled at, another positive tick on her chart to make her parents proud. As a family, they’d dream of the day that Micky would take over the farm, and turn the business into something more than they could’ve imagined. At first, she played along, pushing her dreams of working within the world of hair, makeup, and fashion to the side. She played the part she was expected to play perfectly, while crying at night out of desperation, praying she’d find a way to reconcile who she was with who she was expected to be.
Micky’s mother ran a small side-business out of their home, working as a seamstress to make, hem, and patch various garments and articles of clothing for people in their town. Always having been close to her mother- closer than with her father, despite how desperately she sought his approval- Micky was 15 when she asked her mother to teach her to sew. If Mary found the request odd she didn’t show it, and soon Micky was adding projects and jobs of her own to her mother’s business. When she was 17, Micky gathered up the courage to tell her mother that she thought she might like boys as well as girls, testing the waters for how she’d react to the full truth, should it ever come out. Mary was shocked, though if her heart was shattered she hid it well. She acknowledged the confession with a slight nod, and the two never spoke of it again.
When the time came for graduation from high school and choosing a life path, Micky had reached a point in her life in which she was tired of hiding everything about herself and who she was. She’d worked hard for 18 years to make sure her parents approved of everything she did, though moving into adulthood she wanted more than anything to explore who she was meant to become. Enrolling in a Cosmetology Program, she waited until the day before she was to move into the dorms to tell her parents her plans. Mary, wise as she was, did not seem shocked, though she remained silent as Josiah screamed, yelled, and made his absolute displeasure known. This didn’t deter Micky, though she moved herself in the very next morning...Alone.
College was an amazing time for Micky, and was where she finally felt safe and comfortable enough to begin exploring herself and who she really was. She excelled in her classes, passed every test with flying colors, and was happier than she’d ever been. Approximately six months into her studies, she met a man- another student, James Parker, who she immediately fell head over heels for. He seemed sweet, caring, and genuine, and he was interested in Micky for who she truly was. The pair quickly began dating. A year later, Micky officially changed her name to Michelle. Two years after that, when Micky was 21, the two were married.
Things within the Parker household seemed like a dream, and at first they were. Though, only a few short years into the marriage, things began to sour a bit. The two became distant, a gap that only grew wider over the next 20 years of marriage. By the time Micky filed for divorce, a flood of secrets and hard truths about her marriage and who her husband really was had come to light, in the most hateful of ways possible. Not only had James been cheating on her for years, but she found out that he’d been gossiping about her behind her back, speaking poorly of her and tarnishing her name and reputation. It turned out that those hateful, disgusting comments he’d been making to her in private had permeated the walls of their home, leaking into the real world and costing Micky everything she’d known.
Once the divorce was finalized, Micky knew she needed a fresh start. Picking up as many pieces as she could, she moved out to Colorado, a place she’d always admired for its beauty. Finding a house to rent, she adopted two dogs- Stanley and Priscilla, a Great Dane and French Bulldog- and began rebuilding her life. After some consideration, she decided to follow her lifelong dream of opening her own salon- something she’d often talked about with James, who never failed to shut her down, and tell her the million and one reasons why she wouldn’t ever be able to do so. Realizing she needed more education to pursue her dream, Micky enrolled in Greendale to earn a Business degree, to help her in her pursuits of owning a salon. She’s slowly picking up the pieces of her life, doing her best to make a fresh start and move on from the hell she was trapped in for so long.

make my way back home [when i learn to fly]

pairing: eddie kaspbrak/richie tozier [reddie] w/ stanley uris/patty blum [stanpat], mike hanlon/bill denbrough [hanbrough] & beverly marsh/kay mccall [mcmarsh] word count: 1,458 chapter 3 of 10 summary: He stiffened for a moment, thinking it was Coach Henderson coming over to yank him to his feet, but the touch was much too gentle. “Hey, Richie. Come on.” Eddie Kaspbrak’s voice whispered in his ear, and Richie had to wonder if the fall had knocked him completely unconscious. He let Eddie pull him to his feet, and mostly just stared at the other boy as Eddie helped him gather up the loose- and now slightly damp and dirty- Chemistry notes. ⤹ class scholar richie tozier and school track and field icon eddie kaspbrak rekindle their childhood friendship loosely based off the art concept by @caliceal

Eddie’s leg was shaking a mile a minute as he sat on the bench. He didn’t know how this had happened, he’d never fallen behind before. Maybe he hadn’t always had the highest marks in the class, hell he definitely never would be, but he’d always done well enough. He knew that he needed to regularate a 70 average in his classes to be considered for any sports scholarships and 60 average to even remain on the track team. Sure, his coursework had been harder this year than last but he really thought he’d been doing okay. So imagine his surprise when he was pulled into the guidance counsellors office and told that two of his classes had slipped down under 50% and he was being pulled from the track team if he couldn’t bring his grades up within this quarter.
“It’s still very close to the beginning of the semester, Eddie, so I don’t want you to worry too much just now.” Ms McCullough said in her usual overly cheerful voice. “You have plenty of time to get those marks back up. You’re a smart kid, Edward. You just need to get on top of the concepts you’re struggling with, and I don’t doubt that you’ll be back on track in no time.”
Eddie huffed out a frustrated breath. “I didn’t even realize there were things I didn’t understand.”
Ms McCullough hummed to herself and pulled out a small file from inside her desk. “Well, Edward, our does offer a tutorship program. Our teachers do the best that they can, but we sometimes find that some students learn better when they hear how their peers do things. I have a list-” She slid the paper across the desk while Eddie stared at her. “Every student on that list had agreed to help out students in need, this list is juniors and seniors who will be able to help you catch up in English and History.”
Eddie sighed and pulled the list closer to himself, glancing down at it. He recognized most of the names on the list, unsurprisingly, with how small the school was. Stanley Uris, Patricia Blum, Edward Corcoran, Richard Tozier… He folded the list in half and gave Mrs Cullough a forced smile. “Thank you. I’m sure this will be really helpful, I’ll get right on it.”
“You’re welcome.” Ms McCullough said. “You’re a smart kid, Edward, really. This is a very important semester for college applications. I know track means a lot to you, and you’re an amazing runner, but your grades are equally if not more significant than your running times. I want you to take this seriously, because it is. Look into the tutors and talk to your teachers, and if there’s something going on at home-”
“There’s not.” Eddie broke through her rehearsed counsellor speech. He flapped the folded piece of paper in the air and gave half her a smile. “Everything is fine, I really didn’t realize that my marks were slipping. I’m going to bring them back up. I swear. It is my number one priority.”
Eddie fled the office before Ms McCullough could give him any more pointed but misguided advice. He booked it through the hall, nearly colliding with Mike Hanlon and Bill Denbrough in his rush to get as far away from the stupid guidance office as possible.
“Whoa, Eddie, practicing inside the building now?” Mike asked, helping Eddie steady back to his feet. Mike and Bill were both wearing their athletics hoodies, and their hands were tangled together in the middle. Eddie suddenly felt a rush of jealousy that he’d never experienced before with his friends.
“More like running away from my problems.” Eddie tossed the list of tutors in Mike and Bill’s direction, both of them leaning over to read the names. “Apparently my marks have fallen to shit both English and History and I have until the end of the quarter to get them back up or I’m benched for the entire season.”
“This season?” Bill gaped. “They can’t sit you out this se-se-season, this is when the scouts are going to come out, you need to be racing!”
Eddie tossed his hands into the air in frustration. “I know that, don’t you think I know that? I need to bring my grades up at least 30 percent to even qualify for the extra grants I’d need to pay the rest of the way after the potential scholarship I won’t get if I can’t run. So, I am, for lack of any other term- totally fucked.”
“Eddie, did you look at this list?” Mike asked, handing it back to him. “Tozier is totally infatuated with you, he’d probably drop everything to help you get your grades up if you ask him to.”
Eddie scowled and snatched the list back. “Shut up, he’s not infatuated with me. Asshole.” He grumbled. “We’re just friends, barely friends. I’m not- I’m not going to ask him for some huge favour, he’s got enough on his plate. Decathlon, cheerleading, his own classes-”
“And tutoring.” Mike said slowly. “He signed up, so he’s clearly interested in doing it. It’s something on his college applications, too. Ask him, he’s basically a genius.”
Eddie knew that, of course he did. Richie had always been inhumanly smart, spitting out information that he certainly had to reason to even know. Richie absorbed everything that was ever said in his presence, and Eddie swore he never forgot anything.
“There’s l-l-lots of people on this list,” Bill pointed out when Eddie’s hesitation was obvious. “What about Patty Blum? She’s really n-n-nice, she’s in my bio class. She’s the r-r-reason I’m p-p-passing my bio class.”
Eddie frowned at the list. “Yeah but Patty Blum is dating Stan Uris, and Stan Uris hates me.”
“Didn’t you and Stan Uris used to be friends?” Mike asked.
“Yeah.” Eddie chuckled. “That’s pretty much why he hates me. But it doesn’t matter, it was a long time ago. I’m not going to dwell on what happened.”
He noticed how Bill and Mike exchanged a glance but Eddie just shoved the paper unceremoniously into the front pocket of his backpack. “Well,” Mike said quietly. “You have to do something. So it’s up to you, you can get a tutor you know you help you and that you’ll actually enjoy working with, or you can do something stupider.”
Eddie found Richie seated around the library with Stan, Patty and the rest of the decathlon team. Stan looked up the moment Eddie approached the table and frowned immediately. “This is a closed practise.”
Eddie rolled his eyes. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to take your common knowledge answers to the other schools, Stanley.”
“Common knowledge? So do you know what Olympian God gave up their seat of power for Dionysus when he came into creation?”
Eddie opened his mouth, then quickly shut it with a deep frown. He caught Richie’s eye, who gave him a half grin. “Can I talk to you, Rich? Please?”
“Yeah.” Richie pushed the books aside and stood, following as Eddie moved away from the tables and towards the bookshelves. “What’s up, Eds?”
“I have a favour to ask you, but you can feel free to say no. Like do not feel obligated to say yes at all.” Eddie said quickly and Richie shot him a grin.
“Okay.” He said. “But we both know I’m probably going to say yes.”
“You don’t even know what it is yet.” Eddie said slowly. Richie shrugged one shoulder and Eddie rolled his eyes. “Fine, fine. Apparently, I’ve majorly fucked up and I’m almost failing both English and History, which means if I don’t get it together I’m going to yank off the track team and I won’t be able to get the financial aid I need for school, and McCullough gave him a list of tutors and you were on it and-”
“Eddie, of course, I’ll help you with your classes.” Richie laughed.
Eddie bit his bottom lip. “Are you sure? Like, really sure? Because I know you have a lot of shit on your plate right now, with decathlon and you’re going out for the cheerleading team, so if you don’t have time please don’t worry about it, really- I wasn’t even going to ask, honestly-”
“Eddie. Shut up.” Richie said fondly. “I’m obviously going to help you.”
Eddie sighed and squeezed his eyes shut. “Okay, but if you think you have too much going on at any point, just tell me to fuck off and I can figure something else out.”
Richie smiled and shook his head. “Has anybody ever told you that you need to relax?”
“It’s come up once or twice in my life, yeah.” Eddie replied dryly.

The Boston Poet Who Wrote ‘Return of the Grievous Angel’

This is filed under something you’d think I had known about for a long time but had never heard until this week.
I’ve long considered “Return of the Grievous Angel” to be the quintessential Gram Parson song, evocative of his entire life and career, recorded shortly before his death and released posthumously. A few days ago, my friend Thom casually delivered some shocking information to me on Facebook: the lyrics were not penned by Parsons, but rather a poet from Boston who handed him the lyrics at a concert in 1973 and was not credited until much, much later.
What.
As someone who spent years completely lost in the world of Boston rock n roll minutiae, this is precisely the kind of stray story that would have landed on my desk and captured my attention. But it’s better late than never to let you step into my parlor and tell me how it all went down.

Oliver’s was a Lansdowne St rock club next to Fenway Park. It’s the spot where the Cask N Flagon now resides. One of the final Velvet Underground shows—the last gasp version with Doug Yule and some fellas who had never shared a stage with Lou Reed—would get booked at Oliver’s a few months after this Parsons residency.
Parsons, of course, had plenty of Boston connections at this point—his mid-60′s stint at Harvard (giddily covered by the Boston Globe), forming the International Submarine Band in Cambridge, and reappearing triumphantly a few years later on tour with his Flying Burrito Brothers at the original Boston Tea Party club in 1969. [Side note: this letter Gram wrote to a friend about having to be associated with Dylan “like it or not” is very funny to me.]

There wasn’t much about the Boston poet in David N. Meyer’s excellent book about Parsons and I didn’t have access to any of the other GP bios; eventually I was tipped off to two excellent posts about the story, this Night Flight piece and this excellent account where the author tracked down the poet himself. I recommend reading those both because everything below is going to be a reaction the information found within them.
The essentials are that a young poet named Thomas Stanley Brown wrote the lyrics in about 20 minutes thinking both of his own life and Parsons, went to one of the shows at Oliver’s, chatted with Emmy Lou Harris, got the lyrics to Parsons road manager, and then never saw or heard from Parsons ever again.
After those Boston shows Parsons and his wife went home to California. In July, their house burned down. Around August, Parsons recorded some songs for an album in Los Angeles. In September, he overdosed. The following January his last solo album, consisting of those August songs, was released. No one could have been more surprised to hear the album’s first song than Thomas Stanley Brown. - Twelve Stories
Brown wrote letters trying to get credited for the lyrics with no luck. Different sources say his name was lost in a fire at the Parsons’ Topanga home or that Gram had intended to claim it as his own all along. Eventually, in 1982 a letter to Emmy Lou Harris did the trick and a writing credit—as well as royalties—was bestowed to Brown. As the Twelve Story piece so wisely points out, this is a collaboration between an artist whose infamous life story is always threatening to overshadow his work and a poet we know literally almost nothing about.
What I love about this strange saga—beyond the Boston connection—is how unlikely it all is. You’d be lucky to get a reply to a letter you handed a performer at a concert, never mind expect to hear your unsolicited lyrics turned into one of the performer’s final and best songs. But there’s another layer of surrealness I didn’t see addressed in any of the writing about the song (yet) that I’d like to point out as well.
Because Brown was writing both about himself and thinking about Gram possibly singing it (even noting "the king” with an “amphetamine crown" was an explicit reference to Gram, according to Ben Fong-Torres), there's a few lines that become really eerie here.
"The news I could bring I met up with the king, On his head an amphetamine crown. He talked about unbucklin’ that ol’ bible belt, And lightin’ out for some desert town."
In light of Brown’s intent—to reflect his own experiences but with Gram in mind too—one way to read these lines is that it’s an account of Brown meeting Parsons that night followed by a kind of premonition of where the singer was headed—i.e. Parsons ending up Joshua Tree (a desert town if there ever was one) where his life would sadly end. To think that Parsons sang those lyrics a few months later, probably completely unaware that he was singing from the POV of the poet in the bar writing about imagining meeting Gram Parsons, is just mind boggling. I can’t think of another collaboration quite like it. There are so many levels of awareness here; it’s a meta-recursive-loop-spiral set to a beautiful melody—a modern country standard with a postmodern past it doesn’t like to say much about.
As the Twelve Stories piece notes, not much is known about Brown due to his preference for privacy; “All the essentials regarding Return of the Grievous Angel have already been made public,” he replied to one query. However, someone named Thomas Stanley Brown does have a Twitter account. It doesn’t look like he’s ever tweeted his own words, preferring to retweet messages from various country music performers instead. In his profile photo he’s standing with Lucinda Williams—who presented her own powerful version of “Return of the Grievous Angel” in 1999. This Thomas Brown is wearing a Sweetheart of the Rodeo t-shirt, the lone Byrds LP to feature Parsons.
That’s gotta be him.
There’s the Boston poet who authored a giant puzzle piece of the myth of Gram Parsons in 20 minutes.
