Finding A Mentor is Like Finding "The One"

Last time, we at Growapp discussed in Common Startup Challenges that finding a mentor is one of the most important yet challenging things to have when starting a business.

 A mentor may not exactly be a close friend to confide with but someone who can lead you to the reality of your dreams. Often, they have gone through the toughest roads that unravelled the success that they have today. They have the wisdom, the passion, the grit, and the command to keep you going until you are finally as huge as them, or even better.

 Like what Virgin Group Founder Richard Branson said, “If you ask any successful business person, they will always have had a great mentor at some point along the road.”

 Cheesy to say but it’s like finding “the one”. You have to know if this one’s right for you, can be someone who you really want to talk to, and can growapp, ehem grow up, with.

 In finding your mentor, consider the VIP

1. Values

Are your upbringing and beliefs the same? Do you agree on how you would like to see things? Do they value the importance of family? If yes, they give importance in terms of their team’s family matters. Do they value health? Do they follow traditions like you do?

 It is very important to consider their values because it highly affects how someone runs his/her ventures or even how they lead their people.

2. Industry  

The right mentor knows the ropes of your business. They shall be the one to teach the different ways of the industry, from the most minute detail to the macroscopic level. A mentor does not only inspire but also teaches you well.

3. Personality

Does hanging out with your mentor give you excitement? Do they exude positive vibes? Are they like sunshine to your day?

Think of your mentor as both a good friend and a teacher. Since you can choose them, bear in mind that how they make you feel in general will determine the kind of success journey you’ll have.

A great mentor is inspiring. Like “the one”, who you choose will determine the kind of pivot you’ll have in your life.
