President Molé Confronted by Insurgents
Artist: François André Vincent (French, 1746-1816)
Date: 1778-1779
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan, United States
Mathieu Molé
The son of Edouard Molé (d. 1614), who was for a time procureur-général, he was educated at the University of Orléans. Admitted conseiller in 1606, he was président aux requêtes in 1610, procureur-général in succession to Nicolas de Bellièvre in 1614, and took part in the assembly of the Notables summoned at Rouen in 1617. He fought in vain against the setting up of special tribunals, or commissions, to try prisoners charged with political offences, and for his persistence in the case of the brothers Louis and Michel de Marillac he was suspended in 1631, and ordered to appear at Fontainebleau in his own defense.
Hitherto Molé's relations with Cardinal Richelieu had been fairly good, but his inclination to the doctrines of Port Royal increased the differences between them. It was not until after Richelieu's death that he was able to secure the release of his friend, the abbé de St Cyran. In 1641 he was appointed first president of the parlement, with the preliminary condition that he should not permit the general assembly of the chambers except by express order of the king. After Richelieu's death the pretensions of the parlement increased; the hereditary magistrature arrogated to itself the functions of the states-general, and in 1648 the parlement with the other sovereign courts (the cour des aides, the grand conseil, and the cour des comptes) met in one assembly and proposed for the royal sanction twenty-seven articles, which amounted in substance to a new constitution.
In the long conflict between Anne of Austria and the parlement, Molé, without yielding the rights of the parlement, played a conciliatory part. In the popular tumult known as the day of the barricades (26 August 1648) he sought out Mazarin and the queen to demand the release of Pierre Broussel and his colleagues, whose seizure had been the original cause of the outbreak. Next day the parlement marched in procession to repeat Molé's demand. On their way back they were stopped by the crowd. Molé was threatened with death unless he brought back Broussel or Mazarin as a hostage. Many magistrates fled; the remnant, headed by the intrepid Molé, returned to the Palais Royal, where Anne of Austria was induced to release the prisoners.
Molé's moderating counsels failed to prevent the outbreak of the first Fronde, but he negotiated the peace of Rueil in 1651, and averted a conflict between the partisans of Condé and of the Cardinal de Retz within the precincts of the Palais de Justice. He refused honours and rewards for himself or his family, but became keeper of the seals, in which capacity he was compelled to follow the court, and he therefore retired from the presidency of the parlement.
The Mémoires of Molé were edited for the Société de l'histoire de France (4 vols., 1855) by Aimé Champollion-Figeac, and his life was written by Baron AGP de Barante in Le Parlement et la Fronde (1859). See also the memoirs of Omer Talon and of De Retz.

Story imagery, character design - "The Magpie and Squirrel's Daughter", the changeling story
Character design: The heroine's father (the magpie) is/was also a writer, throwing himself into his career and passions at the expense of his family
Both the heroine (Larissa) and her father write/work best when in various states of undress. The sensation of fabric can be too distracting
Antoine-Vincent Arnault, secretaire de l'Académie française (detail). By François André Vincent, 1801

“I was the oldest,” the prince said, “and yet I am the last. After Mors and Olyvar died in their cradles, I gave up hope of brothers. I was nine when Elia came, a squire in service at Salt Shore. When the raven arrived with word that my mother had been brought to bed a month too soon, I was old enough to understand that meant the child would not live. Even when Lord Gargalen told me that I had a sister, I assured him that she must shortly die. Yet she lived, by the Mother’s mercy. And a year later Oberyn arrived, squalling and kicking. I was a man grown when they were playing in these pools. Yet here I sit, and they are gone."
— Study of an old man; Francois Andre Vincent / A philosopher Looking into the mirror; Jusepe de Ribera / Anguish; August Friedrich Schenck | quotes: The Iron Claw • A Feast for Crows

Les Misérables 1991
After the semi-failure of the very first show in 1980
Les Mis should have logically fallen into oblivion … Without the miraculous intervention of Cameron Mackintosh !!
While he had just inaugurated Cats on Broadway, the concept album of the show was sent to him by the director Peter Farago, who having seen the stage adaptation of Robert Hossein and wanted to create an English adaptation
Mackintosh, initially reluctant eventually accepted the challenge
It took him two years of work in collaboration with Herbert Kretzmer, Siobhan Bracke and James Fenton
The first adaptation of a French musical to finally be created in London in October 1985 at the Barbican Centre before moving to the West End :
youtube
The HUGE success will lead to the production of a second official French version ( we can even consider it as a remake)
Because it would be stupid to change a winning team
Cameron Mackintosh will take the reins of the project ( with behind him the shadow of Alain Boublil who will have to RETRANSLATE Kretzmer's texts which are translations of his own texts )
it is he who will stage this new version closer to the English adaptation than to the original show
The show will be performed in Montreal at the Théâtre Saint-Denis then in Paris at the Théâtre Mogador

Unfortunately ... the show was a resounding failure
Les Mis were snubbed for two reasons :
1 - France and musicals is an incredibly recent encounter !!
The public was not interested in this kind of entertainment, which was considered pedantic and unnecessarily expensive , it will be necessary to wait for "Notre Dame de Paris"
( ironically another musical based on a novel by Victor Hugo)
In 1999, for this kind of show to be adopted and appreciated by the public ( I will probably talk about it one day, it is this show which launched the craze and then the golden age of French musicals )
2 - Fans of the first album and show felt betrayed
It's not easy to accept as a long-time fan that a work is cut or modified ... So when an Englishman allows himself to modify the songs and the scenography, declaring this version to be superior to the original ?! The pill was definitely difficult to swallow
( not to mention the Franco-English friend-enemy relationship which goes back a long way )
Die-hard fans took this as an affront and boycotted the show
Apparently, Cameron Mackintosh was so upset and disappointed by the situation that he called France a "musical graveyard " which only further angered the public, who shunned the show ( and wouldn't revive it until 2024 )
ANECDOTES :
I had already pointed out that in the 1980 version
Gavroche's actors often ended up in front of cameras or as dubbing actors :
youtube
The iconic voices of Alexis Tomassian
...
youtube
Ludwig Briand became a famous child actor playing the role of Mimi Siku in the CULT French comedy : " Un indien dans la ville "
I'll definitely end up talking about the 2024 version ...
To while away the time, I invite you to consult my Masterlist (with my other articles on Les Misérables and other equally exciting French musicals :)

Arria and Paetus by Francois Andre Vincent - a study thereof
I like to go to art museums and just glom onto one piece in particular, and I spend half an hour just making notes on its composition then I just wander the rest of the museum in a daze because I already burned out my brain in the first hall.
This is a recurring event.
