Zara's End of Year Book Wrap Up: Under the read more are my top 5 picks of my reads this year (+ honorable mentions) if anyone is curious for a new book to pick up! It has a mix of fiction and nonfiction!

Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Hands down the BEST book of my year. My absolute bestest friend Britt over at @myhiraeth, first introduced me to her character Styxx and eventually got me to read his book and let me tell you. Its EPIC. Easy read, but with plenty on the plot, background and characters. Insanely immersive and lbh filled with trigger warnings, but truly this is the BEST book I've read potentially ever. I still have a book hangover from this and very little has worked to alleviate it. I am absolutely in love with Styxx and he has taken the top spot as my book boyfriend <3 <3

2. How to think like a Roman Emperor by Donald Robertson

I loved love this and this was a fantastic first dive into the life and way of life of Marcus Aurelius!!! I seriously gleaned some amazing tips and perspective with reading this book that really truly changed how I think and go about life. Its so in-depth, but still I feel easy to read and it broke down how to perceive and enact the tips and ideas of stocisim. Marcus Aurelius has definitely become a personal hero of mine!

3. House of Odysseus by Claire North

Now THIS was my favorite book of the trilogy ( which I read the entire trilogy this year) and the development and the development of Penelope was JUST what I was looking for to take the edge off of my Greek fiction cravings in between listening to Epic the musical. This truly was the BEST book of the series with the build up, the characters and the plot. Insanely clever and fun - it was a great way to get absorbed in ancient Ithaca from a new perspective.

4. Immortal Diamond by Richard Rohr

Now this book focuses more on the spirituality aspects, but I cannot leave this book off my top 5 because it was such a breath air from the structure that is so imposed on beliefs. Again its explained simply, but doesn't diminish from the complexity of beliefs while tackling some of the issues in today's society's belief on God. If you want an in-depth, change of pace, open and encouraging look at the soul and the spirit then I highly encourage you to read this one!! It references to many different teachings, religions and beliefs and brings it all full circle in such a wonderful loving way.

5. House of the Rising Son by Sherrilyn Kenyon

YES, another SK book and YES, this is actually a prequel novella to Styxx. I don't want to spoil anything for Styxx for those who are interestd in reading, but it truly hits at the heart and sets up wonderfully for the Styxx book in itself. Aricles is definitely again book boyfriend #2 though its only on a technicality because if you know, then you know. -wink-

HONORABLE MENTIONS: in no particular order. these books didn't make top 5 by just a hair or a technicality but are all ALSO rated 5 stars in my personal opinion.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt ( im still reeling tbh with the depth and complexity)

The River of Silver by S.A Chakaborty ( like revisiting old friends!! the Daevabad trilogy was my BEST book series for 2023)

Ithaca trilogy by Claire North ( the ENTIRE series was amazing and i cannot recommend it enough )

Persian Fire by Tom Holland ( i was devouring all the history and the insane depth. it wasn't an 'easy' read, but it was such a satisfying one and helped sate my ancient period reads.)

The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem ( the world building is to die for and the characters are so well done!! )

As most of y'all know Dylan already got a lot of backlash last year after that one certain tweet he did. Let's just say things didn't get any better for him a couple months later because the new year had a whole new wave of backlash in store for him.

At first, things seemed to start getting better. He made it public that he has a new girlfriend after being single for a very long time / secretly dating without making anything public after his last longtime relationship with Britt Robertson (2012 - 2017/8).

Most people were happy for him after they heard the news. Until things took a turn that nobody expected and some new news came out shortly after the relationship was made public that left ppl speechless.

13. how was your birthday this year?

it was good, though it was very sad at times because of my dad's passing and it was my first birthday without him but my husband was the sweetest person ever and made me a place where I can go to mourn him and think about him but it was good!

20. what's something you learned this year?

that grief comes in waves, that even if you don't show it like you should you're still grieving and it comes in waves and some days will get better than others and that the person you lost will always be with you even if you can't see them! and that eventually the pain will lessen and you'll think about the good memories and smile! I'm constantly learning this after my dad's passing!

The Merry Gentlemen (2024)

This new release on Netflix opens with Ashley Davis (Britt Robertson) and the Jingle Belles performing on Broadway for the Christmas season. After some very heavy-handed foreshadowing, Ashley gets put on an indefinite hiatus from the Jingle Belles after being the star for 12 years. Ashley is devastated, has no backup plan (which is weird for working in an industry that is so clearly ageist), and decides to go back home for Christmas. I had to double check the name of the town because it's so rustic small town- Sycamore Creek. Ashley’s first stop in Sycamore Creek is her parents' bar The Rhythm Room. She meets a few new men there: the new bartender Troy (Colt Prattes), the regular Danny (Maxwell Caulfield), and the local handyman Luke (Chad Michael Murray). Her parents Stan (Michael Gross) and Lily (Beth Broderick) get called into a meeting with their landlord Denise (Maria Canals-Barrera) shortly after she arrives, so she heads over to the cafe her sister owns to meet her sister Marie (Marla Sokoloff) and her husband Rodger (Marc Anthony Samuel). Ashley is staying with Marie and Rodger and their dog Gizmo while she figures things out.

Ashley's whole family immediately start pushing her to date Luke, but Ashley is on the fence because she hasn't been able to seriously date for many moons. Luke is also on the fence because he doesn't like city girls. I can't speak for Ashley, but for me, the fragile masculinity from Luke throughout this movie would be a deal breaker relationship-wise. He is a total smoke show but also desperately needs therapy. Anyway, at some point, Ashley finds out that her parents are about to lose The Rhythm Room because they can't get acts to perform there anymore. So Ashley decides to put on a "male dance revue" which is a fun way to say male strippers. She enlists Luke, Troy, and Rodger to perform. After the first show, she adds local taxi driver Ricky (Hector David Jr.) and they become The Merry Gentlemen.

Business at The Rhythm Room is booming and Ashley is really enjoying choreographing for The Merry Gentlemen. Ashley and Luke get closer, and things are going well. But of course, that's not the end. Ashley gets called to come back to the Jingle Belles with a promise of a 3-year contract and a 25% raise.

I cannot believe this movie exists. I want to know how someone came up with the concept because wow. Since it was a very dance heavy movie, there was lots of music, which was nice. The show they put on was different every night, which is interesting because they only seemed to rehearse before the first show, but also by the end, there are 5 members (betcha can't guess who). If you're looking for exploring personalities or character growth at all, you will not find it here. I kept forgetting Ashley's name and she's the main character. The novelty of a Christmas movie about male strippers is fun for sure, but the other elements fell flat for me. Overall, 3 stars.

i’m currently revamping my supernatural fic and now i’m working on a new edit for izzy that features ocs that are either new or has been changed, so i thought i’d make a post of all the things i’ve changed, added and kept the same on the art of running so far!! (and a bit unrelated but if you sent me an ask, i promise i’m working on it!! i just got a ton of them in my inbox and it’s taking me a while to get through all of them <3)

instead of a twin sister named evangeline ‘eva’ hayes (played by jenna coleman), izzy now has a twin brother named jerome ‘jerry’ hayes (played by tyler hoechlin)

THE ROOKIE REACTION

Today's reaction is to the season 5, fourth episode titled "The Choice" which originally aired on October 16, 2022. The episode was written by Fredrick Kotto and directed by Bill Roe. Spoilers ahead!

Everyone's favorite serial killer is back for her final act and thankfully this is the last time we will see her. We begin the episode with the 118 (not that 118) responding to an emergency call. Bailey and a bunch of rando firefighters arrive on the scene and enter what looks like the titular murder house from American Horror Story. They all split up and Bailey heads upstairs. She goes into an empty room and ends up falling through the floor and into a Saw-like trap. When she stands up, a metal grate seals her in preventing her escape and she sees the message GOT YOU scrawled on the wall. The inside of the tank she is trapped in has cameras trained on her. Then we get a title card.

Bailey calls Nolan and informs him of her current predicament and tells him she believes Rosalind Dyer is involved. The rest of the 118 find Bailey and the one wearing the red shirt attempts to free her and is electrocuted in the process. Nolan, his new boot, Celina, Tim, and Lucy arrive at the murder house and are brought up to speed by one of the firefighters. They head inside and Bailey tells them that she sees a bunch of metal boxes lining the topic of the tank. Nolan and Tim head outside to chat and are joined by Nyla and Angela. Nolan mentions that there are cameras which means Rosalind is surveying Bailey. Tim says Rosalind couldn't have set something so elaborate up by herself and believes she has an acolyte working with her. The four of them head inside the house.

Another no-named firefighter uses a saw on the metal grate which triggers a bunch of spikes to push up through the floor of the tank. Bailey takes off her coat and uses it to place under her feet. Nolan deduces that any attempt to get Bailey out will result in the deployment of additional Saw-like traps. Apparently Rosalind Dyer is Jigsaw now. Insert side-eye emoji. Celina informs them that they are about to cut the power which triggers yet another trap. Now water is starting to feel the tank.

Nolan gets a call from Rosalind and she tells him not to let on that she is on the line with him otherwise she will kill Bailey. She instructs him to go outside, take off his gun, body camera, and walkie, and get into a station wagon parked nearby. There is a creepy teddy bear positioned on the dash that is a camera. She instructs him to do everything she asks and if he does so, Bailey may survive. While driving, Nolan attempts to use his hazard lights to signal to the car behind him but Rosalind informs him they have been disabled. An angry driver pulls over and attempts to fight Nolan for cutting him off. Rosalind tells him to take care of it. Nolan gets out of the car, knocks the guy out with a right hook, and leaves his business card. Nolan gets back in the car.

Back at the station, Grey tells Nyla and Angela that a guy reported getting knocked out by Nolan. They now know the type of station wagon that Nolan is driving which means a search is underway. Rosalind, as always, is two steps ahead of the game and directs Nolan to a parking garage where he abandons the station wagon in favor of a white van. Meanwhile the tank Bailey is currently trapped in continues to fill with water and to make matters even worse, a chemical spills into the tank which reacts violently with water forcing her to dive underwater until the fire dissipates.

Nyla and Angela learn of a woman who managed to escape from a water trap similar to the one Bailey is currently trapped in. They get a lead on the guy who is responsible for building the tank. The two of them and Thorsen go to an abandoned warehouse along with Special Agent Lauren Stensen (Britt Robertson) and Special Agent Brendon Acres (Kevin Zegers) from the Niecy Nash led spin-off series The Rookie: Feds. Oh apparently this is a crossover event? Anywho, they manage to track down the guy who just so happens to be one of Rosalind's acolytes. He is played by actor Thomas Dekker. The five of them corner the guy and he sets off a detonation which allows him to escape. Now I didn't see the The Rookie: Feds episode but I'm pretty sure it dealt with Niecy Nash and the gang tracking this guy down.

Meanwhile Nolan is directed to a mansion where he is greeted by Rosalind Dyer in the flesh. She looks pretty amazing in a sequined gown. She's got some bubbly and a meal prepared for a last supper of sorts with her favorite person on the planet - John Nolan. She forces him to put on a suit and the two of them sit down to dinner. She turns on a nearby TV which is displaying the feed of Bailey trapped in the tank. Rosalind tells Nolan that he has two options. Nolan can either use a gun to kill Rosalind Dyer and maybe save Bailey from a watery, shocktastic death - or - he can play the good guy and not kill Rosalind and Bailey would for sure die. We see Nolan struggle with this decision as we watch the tank fill up with water. Bailey sinks to the bottom of the tank just as the firefighters remove the metal grate. Celina jumps in and drags a nearly drowned Bailey out of the tank. Nolan refuses to kill Rosalind because at the end of the day he is a good guy and would never kill someone in cold blood - not even if it meant saving the person he loves.

Believing that Bailey is dead, Nolan leads Rosalind out of the house at gunpoint. Before he has a chance to call for backup, an unknown assailant shoots her dead. Right between the eyes. Rosalind Dyer is dead. I certainly didn't expect it to happen this soon in the season. A part of me is relieved that she is dead; however, the damage she has done will leave lasting repercussions for everyone involved, including Nolan. What's even worse is there's no telling how many troubled individuals she's radicalized prior to her death. Even though Rosalind is dead, this, unfortunately, will not be the last we see of her.

When the authorities arrive, Nolan is shocked when he sees that Bailey is alive. I really felt bad for Nolan at this moment. He really believed that his actions had caused her death and thankfully he won't have to live in a world where he has to wake up every day questioning whether or not the decision he made was the right decision. However, it should be pointed out that technically Nolan did choose to save Rosalind Dyer over his girlfriend so I wonder if that will become a potential issue between the two down the road. For now, Nolan is allowed to bask in the bittersweetness that is Rosalind being dead and Bailey being alive.

This week's episode was another great one. As I mentioned in prior reactions, I was hoping they wouldn't drag this Rosalind Dyer storyline out for a long time and I'm so happy they didn't. The only thing I've found strange with Rosalind Dyer is her hyperfixation on John Nolan. I get it, Nolan is the eternal boy scout which makes him the complete antithesis to someone like Rosalind Dyer. However, if anyone should have been the one to be there when she took her last breath, it should have been Lucy who arguably has been through way more at the hands of Rosalind than Nolan has. The woman was locked in a barrel underground in the middle of nowhere. That was brutal. Well, anywho, ding-dong the witch is dead! Thankfully. No more Rosalind Dyer. Hopefully we can get back to some more fun and light-hearted storylines going forward. Until next time ...

The Space Between Us! It stars Asa Butterfield (before they gave him an ugly-ass haircut and dyed his eyebrows brown for Sex Education) and Britt Robertson (who’s always been a favourite of mine) and it’s about a teenager from Mars who plans a trip to see Earth for the first time! It involves the trope “happy burst of sunshine in love with the gloomy cloud of realism” and has the perfect balance of medical whump and romance! I highly recommend it!
