When your ex-boyfriend you had an ugly breakup with calls you to stop a world-ending threat but fails to tell you you're gonna be on a team with your other ex-boyfriend who you had a second, uglier, more recent breakup with all while you're just trying to be a single dad to the daughter you had with your missing presumed dead wife

Episode 2 of Season 2 of What If was awesome! I loved it! It was incredible. 11/10! Hope was cute, Peter was sad, Bucky was sad, the whole team was awesome! Everyone has to watch it, NOW!

Just watched episode 2 of What If Season 2, and it was a much better and evenly paced episode. I love this team of characters that they used for this episode, like an 80's version of the Avengers. The character beats from everyone just worked for me in this episode, from Winter Soldier to Peter Quill. I love the relationship between Hope and Peter, it's a small moment, but it really encapsulates Peter's character. I really love the ending to this episode, and would love to see this team again if possible.
10/10

What if the major leagues never happened to the mcu?
rough rambles, i wanna polish out but cant find motivation, do you think this could be good?
I want the netflix defenders to replace the avengers.
I want a loose mcu / netflix AU fic where instead of the movie timeline with the founding members and the aliens and that stuff…. i want to place the netflix timelines earlier and have Fury and shield start by recruiting Jessica Jones and Luke Cage and Daredevil and Iron fist. Coleen wing could have a little more of her comic abilities, also fix trish walker hellcat a bit Hawkeye and Black widow are still there. captain america and falcon would still be there.
the defenders initiative doesnt have to fight an army of chitauri in their inaugral battle, they could do longer narrative / character driven adventures.
make bulseye more like the comics to elevate him to a team threat
a bit lower stakes with a little less ultra powerful heroes, they wouldn't take orders from shield as a team, only the agent members would obey all orders and serve more as a communication point, rand can replace stark for money and the tower, Steve is still the leader.
ant man and wasp would be a founding members again, make it earlier and there you go. With earlier ant man you could make ultron hanks thing again, maybe make hank and bill foster a little younger.
ant man can only shrink, let goliath be the big dude make bill foster more comic influenced.
I really like bill foster hes a personal favourite so goliath would be cool for a minor league team, he could only grow to 15 feet and had proprtional strength, not kaiju
William Foster himself generally attained a stature of 15 feet for the majority of his crime-fighting activities. At this stature of 15 feet, which is 2.5 times his normal height of 6 feet, Foster's weight increased by a factor of 15.625, the cube of the factor of 2.5, from his normal weight of 200 pounds to a weight at 15 feet of 3125 pounds.
Thats it he was just big, not kaiju gigantic, he could kinda fit through doors and wasnt even bullet proof.
Characters like The Winter Soldier and yellowjacket would be team level threats. The purple man could become a HUGE problem if his arrival is timed right. fix taskmaster and introduce them like in the comics, team level threat.
The winter soldier would be the first huge threat, maybe Bucky is sent to kill or capture captain america after news of his return in order to stop shield from redeveloping super serum or having an active super soldier or whatever. have red guardian, whatever yelena gets re-named to, and winter solder sent in together and sold as nigh-unstoppable threat
punisher is still just doin his own thing and still has the matt connection, but frank is not a defender and maybe does a han solo on your left like once with a sniper
I think Iron fist has to go first to replace Iron Man, Get the rich guy on hero track right away, and his first thing is contained.
daredevil and punisher is next, you can do them contained, make punisher just like tv, maybe change daredevil a bit.
jessica jones gets contacted by shield for the team way before her show starts, she wasn't hiding.
they get luke cage by just offering to use shield rescources to prove him innocent, it buys less loyalty than they hoped but not none. he speechifies a lot and is a paragon like in the comics.
you could do the netflix defenders show without too many major changes and then just have shield swoop in during the ending to help in some way and clean up.
killgrave comes after the famous superheroes and is a movie level threat about it, he wants to rule the world and honestly has a chance.
the hand is a consistent problem just cause they have the numbers and organization to be a problem shield cant just stamp out.
then at the end something like the introduction of thor tied in to loki's chitauri invasion would be the paradigm shifting bigness that the story clifhangers on for the next phase If you steal this you have to let me read it when its up

smh, I'm STILL bitter that Bill Foster / Black Goliath was killed during Civil War for no good reason.

And then, years later, he gets introduced into the MCU, but is basically treated like a throwaway character in the Ant-Man movies.
Tumblr media
Not only do we not get to see him have any fight scenes in the Ant-Man movies, he doesn't use his powers or even suit up (not even in flashback scenes, except just recently on Season 2 of WHAT IF?, where he has a couple throwaway lines).
Like, why bring a character into a story, who's known for being suited up as a superhero, if you plan to just throw them away like that??

What If Peter Quill just needed a friend... Attacked Earth's Mightiest Heroes?
#WhatIf Peter Quill just needed a friend... Attacked Earth's Mightiest Heroes?
Peter shows up to Earth in Ego’s ship that we saw in Guardians II and begins to attack. That led to Mustache Man Howard Stark and Peggy Carter at PEGASUS calling on our Avengers of the 1980s. So, slowly but surely, they all show up: Hank Pym as Ant Man, Bill Foster as Goliath, King T’Chaka as Black Panther, Wendy Larson as Mar-Vell, and Bucky Larson as the Winter Soldier. The interactions…

So I think that there's a story to be found, though it's not one I'm interested in writing because I don't really deeply care about any of the characters around in the '80s -- and like, we know who most of those characters are, because What If actually tackled "what if the Avengers had to form in the '80s" in one of their rare good episodes. so let's lay out who's around in the '80s that we know about -- let's just say 1985, middle of the decade, before the real drama starts happening.
Howard Stark (director of SHIELD science, CEO of Stark Industries)
Peggy Carter (director of SHIELD)
Hank Pym (Ant-Man, SHIELD)
Janet van Dyne (Wasp, SHIELD)
Bill Foster (Goliath, SHIELD)
T'Chaka (Black Panther, Wakanda)
Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier, USSR)
Alexei Shostakov (Red Guardian, USSR)
Melina Vostakoff (Black Widow, USSR)
General Dreykov (director of the Red Room, USSR)
Thaddeus Ross (probably a colonel at this point, U.S. Army)
Obadiah Stane (Stark Industries)
Xu Wenwu (Ten Rings)
also the entire Asgardian cast, and the rest of the Red Room, and some of our mainline present day MCU characters as younger characters --Tony, Rhodey, and Bruce would all be in their mid-late teens, most of the others are born, but very young. (Natasha would be one in 1985.)
In terms of emotional impact, the biggest difference between an 80s discovery and the 2010s discovery is that most of Steve's people are still around in the 1980s -- it's entirely possible that all the rest of the Howling Commandos are still alive by then, for example; we know that Howard and Peggy are alive. I actually think that having Steve show up in the '80s would make Tony's relationship with Howard way, way worse, since Howard's actually there to have the feelings about.
what I think plot-wise, barring some kind of major alien threat like What If produced in their shockingly-actually-good episode, it does actually have to go to some kind of Cold War conflict between SHIELD and either the Red Room or Hydra. I will bang my drum again about actual MCU canon being pretty clear that the Red Room is not connected to the Winter Soldier program at all, so those are two separate entities. you probably get something relatively close to CATWS, just played out early and with a different emotional resonance -- you kind of have to chase down the SHIELD/Hydra connections here, with Peggy and Howard both still around.
so like, there's a story there! not one I'm interested in, but one could certainly do something with it. (I'm sure actual Marvel comics canon at some point has pulled Steve out of the ice in the '80s and had some elaborate political metaphor, though in the '80s that would have been twenty years before the Winter Soldier was created.)

As much as Steve would experience discrimination for being poor and Irish-Catholic (not to mention disabled; the KKK considered Irish-Catholics a target, too) ..another aspect of why Steve isn't any kind of X-ist is that: there was a big problem of antisemitism among the Irish-Catholic population at that time, particularly in New York.
[Meta on this here.]
The Jewish and Irish were considered so likely to be enemies that that-period's equivalent of Guess Who's Coming To Dinner was about a Jewish/Irish couple. And West Side Story was originally supposed to be about a Jewish/Irish couple, since that would automatically read as star-crossed to the audience, back then.
So for Jewish creators to make Steve Irish and anti-Nazi, at that time, meant Steve was going against a big chunk of his own community to do that.
And that's more than just 'not being X-ist.'
That means Steve has serious backbone and clarity of vision when it comes to anti-Fascist principle, since it comes at the risk of being ostracized by his own tribe.
You can see the corollary with Kirby & Simon making an anti-Isolationist comic when that would've annoyed a lot of their own countrymen. And also how Steve's Irishness is showing 'you don't have to be [minority] to be Antifa' ' and 'you don't have to be a Fascist just because you're [from such-and-such community].'
In terms of Showing that he's passionately Antifa, Steve's identity does a lot of load-bearing!
Things People Seem to Forget About Steve Rogers (aka the past is complex)
Things in the future didn't happen in a vacuum, and while Steve missed a lot of stuff while he was in the ice, he would have seen the roots of things like the Civil Rights, Women's Rights and even LGBTQ+ Rights movements in his time.
While I'm sure Steve encountered a lot of people expecting certain right-wing behaviours from him, due to his birth year and the things he missed in the ice, this doesn't mean he would act that way—even right out of the ice.
But first lets take a look at the things Steve missed and see what he did in fact know:

Wahoo I've been working on this dude on-and-off since June 2023 when I saw ATSV in theaters!! I'll probably find more things to tweak right after I submit this but I'm tired of looking at him and I wanted him up in time for Art Fight so I'm releasing him from containment 🏃 More info about him under the cut!
Introducing Steven "Seth" McLilliard Stryker, or the Spider-Man of Earth-40712! Also known as the Peacock-Spider or Spider-Lily, he's been his city's "Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" since he was 15 y/o. As of now he's been the host to two separate symbiotes--his first being Scourge/Calamity (Scourge is what it went by when bonded to Seth, Calamity is what it currently goes by) and his second/current being Malignant/Goliath. Seth is kinda both Spider-Man and Eddie Brock/Venom in his world--moreso the Sonyverse trilogy Eddie/Venom than anything. Anyways, he's in a polycule with Malakai “MJ” Jeriah-Watson (eventually known as Jackpot), Harvey “Harry” Edwin Leeds-Osborn (still debating on if he becomes New Goblin/Hobgoblin/whatever), Feliciano “Felicia” Hardy (also known as Black Cat), and Malignant/Goliath of course. Prior to them he did date a few other people, notably Gavyn “Gwen” Stacy in high school and Dr. Oliver “Liv” Osnick Octavius (later known as Doctor Octopus and eventually [REDACTED]) in his early college years. Still workshopping names but we're getting somewhere! Also still figuring out his villains--Calamity is meant to be his version of Carnage (although I might still make canonical expies of Peter/Venom/Carnage/etc in this verse, not sure yet), and outside of Doc Ock I've got ideas for Green Goblin and the Kingpin (the latter of which is actually his uncle 🫢). But you can expect most of Spider-Man's regular rogues gallery to show up at some point!
I'm really happy with how he came out! I'm still not super confident drawing humans but fixating on this guy's ref really forced me to push through any anxiety I had! His costume went through a few designs before I got it where I wanted it (a bunch of WIP shots will be shown in his TH gallery), but I think I did ok for my first ever fanmade Spidey design :] In regards to his canon event it's gonna suck so much for him, but I'm going to keep details regarding that a secret for now ;3c All I can say is that post-canon-event he's almost exactly like MCU!Peter after Aunt May's death. Think when he's fighting Green Goblin and he goes to stab him with his own glider, only Raimi!Peter isn't there to stop him,,,
ANYWAYS I could yap for hours about this guy but so take these instead:
-Here's a link to his Toyhouse page! I spent a good chunk of time making it all pretty and even though it isn't done yet I wanna share it with y'all 🤠
-And here is a link to his playlist! It's got songs mixed in that fit with other Earth-40712 characters, but 98% of the songs in there are related to him!
