Writing Notes: Foraging

Foraging - the process of searching for and obtaining food sources or medicinal plants in the wilderness.

People on long camping or wilderness expeditions may depend on foraging for extra food or survival when they are adventuring out in the natural world.

In this case, identifying edible plants is a potentially life-saving skill.

How to Identify Edible Plants

Freshly foraged food can help you when you’ve run out of food supplies, but you should know exactly what is safe to consume. For that, you can perform an edibility test. Here is a quick breakdown of the edibility test for plants you find in the wild.

Look for the most common poisonous traits. Rule out mushrooms and plants with milky sap, fine hairs, spines, umbrella-shaped flower clusters, or waxy leaves.

Do a skin test. Take the piece of the plant you want to eat and rub it on your inner forearm or outer lip. Wait 15 minutes.

Do a taste test. If there’s no reaction during the previous step, taste that same part of the plant and wait another five minutes.

Do a bigger taste test. If you don’t taste any bitterness, soapy flavor, or feel any numbness, take a teaspoon of that same part of the plant and chew for five minutes, spitting out extra saliva regularly. Swallow, then wait eight hours.

Eat a small amount. If you’re still not experiencing any digestive issues, eat one tablespoon of that same part of the plant and wait another eight hours. If you still have no symptoms, you can consider that part of the plant edible in the manner in which it was prepared.

Take precautions. Whether you’re practicing sustainable foraging or trying to rough it in nature, use common sense and your best judgment when searching for edible wild plants. Some edible species of plants have toxic look-alikes, or may have edible berries but poisonous stems and bark (such as elderberries). Additionally, not all parts of the plant are edible simply because one part is. Test parts separately before consuming the whole plant, and whenever possible, always do plenty of thorough research when taking a chance out in the wild.

How to Forage Off the Land

Humans can only go 3 days without water, but about 30 days without food. So while foraging shouldn’t be your first priority in a survival situation, it can help you find some extra calories if things become dire. Here are a few tips for beginners on what to look for when foraging for food in the wild.

Look for the right berries. Berries are a good source of carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamins. Aggregate berries (those with tightly packed clusters, like raspberries and mulberries), are 99% edible worldwide. Blue, black, and purple berries are around 90% edible (though you should consider an edibility test). Orange and red berries are about 50% edible, so definitely use an edibility test. Green, white, and yellow berries are about 10% edible and should be avoided.

Catch some insects. Insects contain seven times more protein than ground beef, and they’re much easier to catch than small game. Some safe-to-consume insects include earthworms, mealworms, ants (boil first; avoid fire ants), crickets, and grasshoppers (remove the legs and wings first).

Find edible greens. There are many wild plants that are safe for consumption. Aside from the obvious fruits and vegetables, there are plenty of edible weeds such as chickweed, dandelion, clover, chicory, cattail, and wild mustard. Wild onions are also sometimes available, though they can be tricky to identify. However, if it looks like an onion and tastes like an onion, it’s an onion.

Stay away from busy roads or treated land. Some vegetation can be tainted by car exhaust, oil, lead, or other substances that make their way into the surrounding brush. As a forager, you should stay far away from areas that have been exposed to too many man-made elements, or have been coated in herbicides or pesticides.

Get familiar with common poisonous plants. While distinguishing between edible mushrooms and toxic mushrooms or berries can be tricky, there are some basic, toxic plants that everyone should be able to recognize such as holly berries and poison hemlock. You should also be able to recognize other toxic plants, such as poison oak, poison ivy, and poison sumac. These plants all contain a chemical called urushiol, which is an oil that can cause contact dermatitis and be hard to remove from your skin (hence the prolonged rashes when exposed to these plants).

Poisonous Plant Characteristics

There are many different characteristics of dangerous plants that can make them easily identifiable, even without a field guide. Here are a few traits:

Milky sap: Milky or latex sap is a substance that oozes out of a plant’s branches or stems if cracked or broken. It can cause skin irritation or other strong allergic reactions.

Fine hairs and spines: Fine hairs and spines are usually an indicator that a plant has a defense mechanism to ward off predators. Most of these hairs will cause some sort of stinging or burning sensation when you touch them with bare skin.

Umbrella-shaped flower clusters: Most plants with umbrella-clumping flowers have high toxicity and should be avoided.

Waxy leaves: Also known as the cuticle, “wax” on leaves is a protective layer that helps plants retain water, but can sometimes indicate that a certain type of greenery is a toxic plant and not safe to eat.

Mushrooms: Certain mushrooms may be edible—like morel mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, or chanterelle mushrooms—but you should exercise caution when you find these fungi growing on trees or the ground. Don’t eat any mushrooms that you cannot identify with complete certainty, because they can be toxic.

Some common food sources you can forage for are cattails, acorns and stinging nettles (if boiled), tubers, rosehips, weeds, yarrow, and plantain. Before you forage, you want to make sure that you know how to properly do so, because eating the wrong kinds of plants can be toxic.

seven and nine

It was the summer before second grade for you, fourth grade for the triplets. The four of you had been inseparable since you were toddlers as your parents were all close friends. There was something special between you and Matt that was different than how things were with Nick and Chris. You followed Matt everywhere. You looked at him like he had strung the stars, in your childhood mind, he did. At this point, Matt saw you as his shadow.

"Quit followin' me! I'm gonna beat ya up, kid," Matt teased sticking his tongue out. This elicited a squeal and a trail of giggles to leave your mouth as he chased you around the backyard. You knew he'd never actually hurt you, but you were happy to have him giving you some sort of attention.

"I have a feeling we're gonna have trouble keeping them two apart 'for too long," Your dad chuckled sipping his beer which caused Matt's dad to laugh and nod.

twelve and fourteen

Many of your summer days were spent with the triplets in between your neighboring backyards. The four of you played endless games of pretend or hide and seek. Finally, your dads thought it was about time you all had somewhere to play and they built you all a tree house in the tree between your houses.

The four of you sat in the treehouse playing truth or dare. As you both grew, you only became more inseparable. "Chris, truth or dare," you spoke above the pop music playing from the stereo in the corner.

"Dare," Chris said with a grin.

"I dare you to eat that grasshopper!" Nick yelled pointing at a bug on the wall. While this wasn't Chris' finest moments, he would never turn down a dare...

After you all had settled back down, Chris turned to Matt, "Matt, truth or dare."

"Dare, obviously," Matt scoffed, a slight lisp from his braces.

"I dare you to kiss y/n," Chris smirked causing Nick to bust out laughing. Matt looked at you, both of your faces the color of cherries.

"You'll have to catch me first!" you exclaimed quickly climbing out of the treehouse. Matt followed fast behind you as he chased you around the house. He caught up to you along the side of the house, now out of view of the boys in the treehouse. You were both out of breath from nerves and the chase. Matt's bright blue eyes met yours as your faces grew closer. Little did you know then, he would be your first and only kiss.

sixteen and eighteen

Matt had spent most of the summer busy working. You honestly had not seen him the whole two and a half months. Chris and Nick worked less so you still saw them often. The four of you reunited the group the night before school started with a bonfire in the boys' backyard. You made your way over wrapped in a blanket to protect you from the chilly night air. Matt stopped in his tracks. How could someone change so much in just a few months? Your hair was long and flowing, your acne had cleared, and you were no longer an awkwardly lanky preteen. It was as if he was seeing you in a whole new light.

"Hi Matt!" you smiled, thrilled to see him after all this time. He was still stunned as he pulled you into a hug. The night flew by as he continued to stare at you, barely contributing to the conversation, he took it all in.

As many predicted, the two of you got together the beginning of your sophomore, his senior, year of high school. It was a beautiful relationship built on friendship, trust, and love. If people thought you were inseparable before you started dating, they should see you now. Matt was the one who taught you to drive and was there when you took the ACT for the first time. You helped him sort through college acceptance letters and even visited some schools with him.

Then came the first fight, who knows what it had started from, all you knew was now you were yelling at each other in your childhood bedroom. "I can't stand you, Matt!" you yelled. With a huff he walked out slamming your bedroom door behind him. A puddle of tears, you collapsed onto your bed as you hugged your pillow wishing it was him.

Matt sat in his bedroom at the house next door. He paced around his room trying to send you texts and calls, all which were left unanswered. He made his way to your porch and texted you, "Im outside." Hoping beyond hope that you would come down and let him in. Before he knew it, his eyes were fluttering open and greeted with bright sunlight and your mom's empathetic face.

"You sweet boy, get in here," she said wrapping him in a throw blanket. He gave her a small smile and fell back asleep in the hallway outside your bedroom. He gave you your space, but was ready to be there when you were.

twenty one and twenty three

The two of you sat up in the treehouse, surprised it was still standing. You had just graduated college and couldn't be more excited to start your new job. The stereo in the corner played soft music as you and Matt danced around slowly, just happy to be in each other's presence. He spun you around and when you turned back to him, he was on one knee. A gasp left your lips as you bent down to meet him at his level. Nodding your head, he slipped the ring onto your finger and stood up to kiss you.

Church bells rang as your eyes met Matt's. You floated down the aisle to him and connected your hands. It was a small intimate wedding of your closest family and friends, but none of that mattered. All you saw was Matt in that moment. Everyone cheered as you said your 'I dos' and sealed it with a kiss. He carried you back down the aisle as you saw your moms dabbing their eyes.

The reception was the event of the year. So many old and new friends getting together. You all danced the night away until you and Matt disappeared to the honeymoon suite at a nice hotel downtown.

You walked carefully as you carried a pink bundle in your arms, following Matt who had your toddler on his hip. It was the first time you were bringing your daughter home to the house you and Matt had bought from your parents. Chris and his wife (a/n its me) bought Matt's parents' old house. Nick and his husband lived in the house across the street. It was like some things had never changed. The two of you sat on the porch swing watching your son play in the yard while you held your daughter. "Can you believe this is where it all started?" you smiled up at your husband, who you'd love since you were a child.

eighty seven and eighty nine

That house was where the two of you had stayed. It earned some renovations but so much of your relationship was intertwined in its bones, you could never leave. Matt sat next to you on that same porch swing holding your hand as you both watched the stars. You looked at him as if he had strung them, because in your mind, he had.

Approaching the benevolence of a Bodhisattva in a militant fashion doesn’t quite work. Beginners are often overly concerned with their own practice and their own development, approaching Mahayana in a style that brings to mind the path of individual liberation.

But that serious militancy is quite different from the lightheartedness and joy of the Bodhisattva path. In the beginning you may have to fake being open and joyous. But you should at least attempt to be open, cheerful, and, at the same time, brave. This requires that you continuously take some sort of leap. You may leap like a flea, a grasshopper, a frog, or finally, like a bird, but some sort of leap is always taking place on the Bodhisattva path.

There is a tremendous sense of celebration and joy in finally being able to join the family of Buddhas. At last, we have decided to claim our inheritance, which is enlightenment. From the perspective of doubt, whatever enlightened quality exists in us may seem small scale. But from the perspective of actuality, a fully developed enlightened being exists in us already. Enlightenment is no longer a myth: it does exist, it is workable, and we are associated with it thoroughly and fully. So we have no doubts as to whether we are on the path or not. It is obvious that we have made a commitment and that we are going to develop this ambitious project of becoming a Buddha.

Taking the Bodhisattva vow is an expression of settling down and making ourselves at home in this world. We are not concerned that somebody is going to attack us or destroy us.

We are constantly exposing ourselves for the benefit of sentient beings. In fact, we are even giving up our ambition to attain enlightenment in favour of relieving the suffering and difficulties of people. Nevertheless, helplessly, we attain enlightenment anyway. Bodhisattvas and great Tathagatas in the past have taken this step, and we too can do so. It is simply up to us whether we are going to accept this richness or reject it and settle for a poverty-stricken mentality."

For those who have moved north in recent years and are still grappling with the warmer conditions, Jerry offers a class in Sub-tropical Gardening 101.

The weather:

Just because you’ve moved to the warm sub-tropics, doesn’t mean you’ll no longer get frosts! And while there’s plenty of sunshine, summer rainfall can be patchy and erratic.

There are two main seasons: warm and cool.

* Warm runs from December to March and it’s generally wetter. Rainfall can be short and heavy.

* The cool season runs from May to November and that’s generally drier, with lower temperatures and less humidity.

Soil: Jerry recommends adding compost to the soil whenever sowing or planting to help combat these seasonal shifts. And always cover the soil with mulch to capture and store seasonal downfalls. Jerry uses chopped sugar cane.

Starchy staples - potatoes can rot or wither in Brisbane, so Jerry grows yams, arrowroot, sweet potatoes and bananas instead.

He recommends sweet potato and an easy plant for beginners; plant in a raised bed for good drainage, then feed monthly and water sparingly. Watch for grasshoppers and lift all your crop at harvest to avoid leaving food for weavils. Crop rotation avoids reinfestation, too. Plant in spring for harvest after 3-4 months. Don’t forget the new shoots are edible, too!

Leafy greens can go to seed quickly in the heat. They do best in the cool season but sowing for succession harvests helps, too. Jerry grows a range of greens, including Ethiopian cabbage, leeks, sweet leaf, kings salad, and herbs.

A good starter for beginners is celtuce, which tastes like a cross between celery and lettuce. As well as using the leaves, the stems can be peeled, sliced and stir-fried.

Fruit trees - Jerry says you need at least one exotic sub-tropical fruit and his pick is the papaya. You can eat the ripe fruit, make a lovely green papaya salad, the seed relieves constipation and the chopped leaves have a peppery taste. Treat as short-term perennials and replace every 2-3 years. To avoid fruit fly, pick the fruit green and ripen it indoors.

Tomatoes - in the subtropics the seed should be sown in March for planting in April or May because they grow better in the dry season. This also helps avoid fruit fly attack - until late September, at least. Grow cherry tomatoes to reduce the risk of caterpillar attack.

Frangipani - a sub-tropical must-have. Don’t limit yourself to the old-fashioned white flowers - there are hundreds of cultivars that will grow in the sub tropics, so enjoy them and the different fragrances they bring. They need full sun and excellent drainage. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser that’s high in phosphorous and potassium twice a year: in spring and summer.

A Bug-Based TTRPG

Bite-Sized! is a D6 tabletop role-playing game where you play as bugs on an alternate version of Earth. In this universe, humans never existed and bugs are the most intelligent creatures. Explore a world filled with giant creatures, towering flora, magic, and deadly beasts.

This TTRPG is made to be picked up by beginners or veterans of the TTRPG scene. Bite-Sized! has 3 archetypes to choose from: Warrior, Spellblade, and Sorcerer. Warriors' expertise is in weapons and maneuvering during combat. Sorcerers' expertise is in magic. Whether that be for utility or combat potential. Spellblade combines sorcerers' and warriors' perks for a jack-of-all-trades type of play. This game heavily focuses on exploration being a part of the journey and being able to customize your character quite a bit.

I have slightly scoped back the game to make it more manageable for myself so there will only be 6 lineages instead of the original 10 that were planned.

Child of Antipiphyra: This lineage is based on flies, scorpionflies, and fleas. With amazing reaction time and movement, you can dodge and weave through any obstacle.

Child of Arnaea: This lineage is based on arachnids. With good utility like the ability to have extra limbs, you can fill many roles in the party.

Child of Hinotira: This lineage is based on bees, ants, and wasps. Pheromones and abilities that are great for cooperation will ensure this lineage is a bonus to any party.

Child of Kolotira: This lineage is based on beetles. With the strongest defense of any lineage and great strength, this lineage is fit for the most strenuous of tasks.

Child of Ledotira: This lineage is based on butterflies and moths. Great stealth skills and good flight make this perfect for players who want to be flashy and stealthy.

Child of Ortotira: This lineage is based on crickets and grasshoppers. This lineage is great for those who wish to be able to fill any role.

All these lineages have different abilities to choose from based on real animals! Some have an exaggerated effect but the base for everything is found in nature.

This game is still a work in progress. I will be trying my best to post an update at least once per week. Additionally, I have the website fixed and all set up so feel free to visit it and sign up for the newsletter for more in-depth updates. I also have some stickers available on the website.
