Rpg Anon: Just had a thought for the new Remnant Mahiru gimmick. We turn it into a game of cat and mouse or predator and prey. She'll attempt to sneak up against us from time to time randomly across the world map and ambush us and we the player/the team either have to spot her before she does and chase her down or we have to manage to sneak up against her and catch her by surprise. She'll camera flash us and disappear afterwards. Catch her a couple times and it'll eventually turn into the full on boss fight I listed some time ago. Here are my only questions I need your opinion on.
How would we logically spot/track her? In the Pokemon and Batman examples from before, our maps and scanners mark the moving target's current position. What would be the logic behind how the team can sense whether she's close by or what not? Or maybe, should we not do this and leave it all down to luck and skill?
(Just realized that since Mahiru's rpg class is the Scout in my headcanon, her skills for reconnaissance and visually analyzing the details of the environment may actually help. I haven't been to Asoot in a long while but I think I remember Mahiru being able to do quite good detective work from just looking at a photo and a video.)
For the encounters where she ends up flashing us and fleeing capture, do you think she should leave behind random minions or something for us to fight?
How much times do you think the team needs to catch her before she gives up retreating?
When she ambushes the team, what specifically do you think she should do? Steal our stuff, free hit and run, or what?
(I just realized I basically made Remnant Mahiru into Abra from Pokemon or the rare golden shadows from Persona)
I think I had more questions but I forgot. Maybe later.
//Ok, so how about this?
Figuring out how and when Mahiru appears on the map should be either a dialogue prompt or an audio prompt. For example, you can enter an area and a text box will show up saying something like [You get the feeling you’re being watched] to let you know that she’s somewhere in that area. Alternatively, maybe you’d be able to hear the noises of her scuttling about, or the sound of her camera taking photos of you. In Batman: Arkham Knight, this is how you found Man-Bat, aside from the first encounter involving the jumpscare; you had to keep an ear out for him shrieking, which is how you knew he was around.
I don’t think she should leave behind minions, primarily because it means you get something out of the encounter. If she disappears and leaves behind enemies for you to fight, then taking out those enemies will give you EXP. It may sound contrived and not much of a selling point, but it would make more sense if she just bailed and be done with it, because at the end of the day, she’s a Remnant of Despair, and it’s literally their purpose to fuck people over.
How many times she’s encountered I feel has to depend on how many areas on the map there are to visit, that make sense for her to spawn in. Say for example the map has about 24 different areas, and you’re required to encounter Mahiru once in all those areas, and once you do, that’s when you can take her down for the final time. I know it sounds contrived, but it would be beneficial if it means Mahiru doesn’t spawn in the same place over and over again, like when she’s attacked in one place, she doesn’t attack there again. It makes it easier to narrow down where she’s gonna appear next.
I don’t remember all the status effects that we had, but assuming we have something similar to confusion, what might be a good idea is if she attacks, flashes you with her camera, and confuses the party before she runs away. Which means the next enemy the party runs into, provided they don’t have items to cure the confusion, they’ll start the next battle with the confusion Mahiru applied. That, or like you said, she just steals a random item.
//That’s what I got.
