I lowkey kinda feel like writing smth for dr ratio but take this idea for now:

Revisited the 36 questions musical (music in it is so banger my god). Imagine you're one of dr. ratio's old classmates. An academic rival if you will. You part ways with him after high school. You could not imagine going to a university with him. You pity the poor students that do.

But he does come back into your life. You've seen him occasionally at your job. YOu do your best to ignore him, treat him like you would with any other colleague that you might have known. At an arm's length. You're not friends with any of them. You certainty would not treat him with more kindness than you would with any other person. Suffice to say, although petty, you had never gotten over how he was just always just barely a mark or two above you.

That was until you realized that the distance between you two was so great, that he was now your boss. You found out he was a professor in a university through the grapevine of your coworkers who can't stop swooning over him. You tried to ignore them, focus on your work, but today, they were loudly announcing that he was going to be the manager of your department. Strange, you think to yourself. He had never seemed to have an interest in your line of work. He had always been highly theoretical. You had turn to be highly practical. He was one meant for the sciences, while you could only surmount to doing practical application. You'd have imagined he would be doing things that were beyond what the mundane could comprehend. He shouldn't be here.

But he was.

WHILE being a professor at one of the top universities. Countless accomplishments, probably a wall full of certificates and awards. You had grown not to care about things like that. But it still felt that he was invading the one thing you were good at. Still though, you wouldn't let it bother you. In the worst case, you'd switch companies, maybe move somewhere else and he wouldn't be a problem anymore.

But Dr. Ratio seems to have different ideas. Management under his hand was very different. You were immidieately promoted to the highest rank, below manager. Much to your distaste, you had told him multiple times to promote one of your coworkers. They had much better qualifications for becoming a manager than you did. But alas, your protests always came to deaf ears.

Suddenly you were crushed by work, tons of pressure, and under his scrutiny. He was a big fan of doing big, risky projects. Ones that you'd always be responsible for if you failed. You'd try to politely deny his requests, but he'd insist, threatening that you'd be fired if you didn't pull through.

At one point you had just had enough.

You coldly place your resignation onto his desk. The box of your belongings was balanced between your hand and your knees.

"What is the meaning of this?"

"My resignation. I'm leaving." You say simply. "Don't try to convince me to stay. Working under you is simply not something I am suited for."

He seems uninterested. He raises an eyebrow at you. "Is that so? I was under the impression that you were doing quite well."

You didn't know whether you wanted to laugh or scream in that second. You were sure your hair was going to turn half-white before he picked up a goddamn clue. You suppose passing out three times and looking like you had your eyes punched wasn't a strong enough indicator.

"Ah... well... I'm flattered you think that way, but I really think it's time for me to move on...."

"And your plan after this is...?"

"Oh. Maybe work at someplace else." You lie, "I have a few options I can choose from, I'll probably end up working at one of those."

Dr. Ratio looks at your face, and then looks up and down. You stand there akwardly waiting for his approval to leave. You began counting down seconds. If he wasn't going to let you leave in the next two minutes, you'd walk out the door yourself.

"Why don't we sit down and talk first? Before you leave."

What? "Oh no sir.. it's fine... really..."

"It's been a few years since we've last seen each other and talked, hasn't it? I was wondering when you were going to approach me again. It's just a shame it's in this way."

He turns around and puts the sheet of paper into the shredder. You look back at him wide-eyed, debating on whether you would just walk straight out.

"Save your insults for later. Now tell me why you pretended not to recognize me for the past year I've worked here."

Entelechy

The fourth grade class was planning Valentine’s Day. Mrs. Ray told the children not to give Jimmy, the class problem, any valentines. Anne bought Jimmy the biggest one she could find, and put it on his desk. It was the only one he got. She did not open her own, but waited until she and Mrs. Ray were alone. Anne took all her valentines, dropping them unopened in the trash in front of Mrs. Ray. The teacher and Anne stared at each other briefly, then, without saying a word, Anne left the room. After that, Mrs. Ray no longer picked so much on Jimmy.

An ability to view several aspects of a situation simultaneously, to understand several layers of self within another, and to see quickly to the core of an issue characterize the trait of perceptiveness. Adults with this trait can understand the underlying meaning of personal metaphors, exercise insight and intuition, and see beyond the superficiality of a situation. Truth, justice, and fairness are often issues for these gifted adults. In childhood, perceptiveness manifests itself as intuition, insight, and a need for truth (Lovecky, 1990b).

Derived from the Greek word for having a goal, entelechy is a particular type of motivation, need for self-determination, and an inner strength and vital force directing life and growth to become all one is capable of being (Lovecky, 1990b). Gifted adults with this trait are involved in making their own destinies, believe in themselves, and continue on despite obstacles. Because of their tremendous personal courage, they may inspire and sometimes shame others.

Gifted children with entelechy are highly motivated, single-minded in the pursuit of their own goals, and very strong-willed. Abraham Lincoln, for example, was so determined to get an education that he read while doing physical labour and walked miles to borrow books. In a frontier community, he refused to hunt or kill animals (North, 1956).

Children high in entelechy, like Lincoln, find the independence, strength of will, and inner spirit to surmount obstacles that would daunt most others.

Positive Psychology The History and Development of Positive Psychology: An Overview of Perspectives and Theories As the medical and even the human sciences go, psychology is still a relative newcomer to the real of academic scholarship and real-world practice. Surgeries and other investigations into the workings of the human body -- methods of determining the sources of illnesses and attempts at treating these illnesses, as well as simply understanding the functioning of a body and its organs in a state of health -- are older than civilization itself, and were in many ways quite refined before the concept of psychology had solidified. Other somewhat subjective "soft" or human sciences developed quite rapidly in the eighteenth and especially the nineteenth centuries, with sociology, economics, and political science emerging in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. All of these sciences attempt to explain the ways in which large groups of human beings interact both create and surmount certain problems. This development is somewhat understandable given the historical events and trends of the time; as society become larger and more interdependent -- and as social ills such as poverty became more rampant and apparent -- the need to understand such group dynamics was more pressing for pragmatic as well as humanitarian and academic reasons. This potentially explains why the other human sciences were so rapid to develop, and the necessities as well as intrigue inherent to medical investigations is self-evident. This does not explain, however, why these sciences developed to the exclusion of psychology. History will never really reveal the reasons behind what didn't happen, of course, so today we can only guess at the slow progress -- or actually, the complete delay in the start of progress -- that psychology made during the Dark Ages and the Renaissance. Religious dogma certainly had something to do with it, as psychological issues were and are often perceived (rightly or wrongly) as issues of morality both in choice and in inherent "goodness;" as much as many people evinced a desire to dismiss these beliefs, the fact that they existed and were in many cases features of law as well as religion made psychology at best impractical for the times and at worst a means of assuring one's doom. Only after industrialization had been successful where reason had not and religion's power had begun to erode did psychology begin to emerge. It was not until the nineteenth century was drawing to a close that psychology began to solidify in any real sense, and even then it was primarily the work of one man that propelled this budding science for its first decade or so. Unlike the sets of different-minded individuals like Weber and Durkheim that drove the development of sociology, or the highly disparate theories of Marx and Adam Smith when it came to economics, Sigmund Freud toiled in relative isolation in the development of his psychoanalytic theories. Though many of Freud's specific conclusions have now been almost universally rejected, much of his theory regarding the workings of the human psyche in general have been preserved, and its was Freud's investigations that brought a real sense of scientific exploration and examination to the issue of the human mind, and that founded the science of psychology. Despite this slow and isolated beginning for psychology as a science, however, the twentieth century saw a major explosion in the number of individuals and institutions that dedicated themselves to a study of psychology. This also led to an exponential growth in the diversity of different theoretical approaches that were brought to bear on an examination of the mind's inner workings, and psychology became not just one standardized science but rather an array of competing disciplines. This has led to the existence of several distinct schools of psychology in the current era, and though all of these theoretical schools hold different beliefs and explanations for how things like memory, cognition, decision making, and goal seeking operate, they all have essentially studied the same basic features from very different angles. A somewhat novel approach that has been developing in the past decade is known as positive psychology, a school of thought that focuses on optimizing the human potential and tries to identify the means of establishing long-lasting psychological happiness despite the adversity and struggle associated with life. Early Beginnings Though positive psychology has only recently been codified as such, certain key strains of thought that appear in the theory are quite old. Several Eastern philosophical and religious traditions emphasize the pursuit of happiness and the escape of suffering -- this is the fundamental pursuit of Buddhism and several other related religions (Levine 2006; Engler 2009). Practices such as yoga were actually developed specifically to increase psychological as well as physical well-being (Levine 2006). It is not only in their grand pursuit of happiness that several Eastern religions can be seen evoked in the theories and actions of positive psychology and its proponents and practitioners, but the position of man in relation to the world that all of these perspectives imply is also quite similar. Rather than seeing all of the negative features and events that can and do befall individuals, positive psychology, Buddhism, and other systems of belief and/or thought emphasize the ability for people to overcome such adversity and even to find joy in many things in life (Seligman 2000; Fiske et al. 2010; Sandage & Hill 2001). This is not true only of specifically "Eastern" religions, but is a strain of thought that can be found in many older and/or "non-Western" traditions, including certain indigenous African and South American religions (Sandage & Hill 2001). Man's place in the world is as a working part of it in these philosophies, not opposed to it as in traditional Western modes of thinking (Seligman 2000). This is not to say that there is not early Western precedent for the development of positive psychology, however, and in fact similar philosophical and quasi-religious sentiments can be seen throughout the development and progression of Western civilization. Aristotle saw the pursuit of the happy life as equivalent to the pursuit of a good life (with certain other moral caveats that helped to define happiness), there is an expectation as well as a divine imperative to be happy in the Jewish religion, and even certain early Church leaders such as St. Augustine saw a place for happiness in the fulfilled and devout life (Sandage & Hill 2001; Fiske et al. 2010; Seligman 2000). Such thinking persisted even into and beyond the Enlightenment. Scientific rationalism has in many ways been poised to define human misery; it is a perspective that sees problems and cannot really function without attempting to address negatives (Seligman 2000). Perhaps as a reaction to this trend during the Enlightenment period, when rational and scientific inquiry began to take place in a truly meaningful way, thinkers like Thomas Jefferson envisioned an inalienable human right to "pursue happiness," John Stuart Mill developed his framework of utilitarian ethics whereby that which made the most people happy was deemed to be a moral good (with certain other caveats, it should be noted), and other humanist philosophies that also had a strong rational basis also began to emerge (Hill 1996; Sandage & Hill 2001). All of these thinkers and their theories essentially laid the groundwork for what would become known as positive psychology. Humanist Psychology The humanist philosophies that began to develop as a response to scientific rationalism during the Enlightenment did not simply leap to positive psychology, but rather this psychology developed out of earlier related psychologies that took a very humanist approach. Carl Rogers is considered by many to be the founder of humanist psychology, believing that psychology should be involved in and focused on helping every individual achieve their highest level of potential and satisfaction as human beings, rather than fitting them into a mold of "normal" psychology or behavior (Rogers 2003; Rogers 1956). Essentially, Rogers was concerned with being to help every patient of his to become happy and developing tools that could help all individuals in this endeavor (Rogers 1956). Abraham Maslow was a contemporary of Rogers that developed a psychological theory and framework along very similar lines. Maslow gave his framework a more specific bent, however, focusing on human motivation and need as a means of determining how to help people (Maslow 1946; Maslow & Frager 1970). Through his research, Maslow built a hierarchy of needs that he theorized every human being tried to satisfy in order, building from the bottom up (Maslow 1946). At the bottom of this hierarchy are basic physiological needs, and at the peak of the hierarchy is the need for what Maslow termed self-actualization -- essentially becoming the best and most fulfilled person that one could become (Maslow 1946; Maslow & Frager 1970). Maslow saw the role of psychology as helping people to identify and achieve these levels of need in their life, moving towards self-actualization, which is very much like the basic focus of positive psychology (Maslow & Frager 1970; Seligman 2000). Another near-contemporary of Rogers and Maslow is Albert Bandura, whose social learning theory is more part of the behaviorist school than the humanist, though these are not as dissimilar as is often thought (Bandura 2010; Ricks & Wandersman 1982). Ultimately, though Bandura's work is most famous for explaining aggression and other behavior developments, it is truly concerned with how people develop into functioning and satisfied human beings (Bandura 2010; Bandura 1978). Even in seemingly opposed theoretical schools, then, the development of psychology during the twentieth century was leading inevitably towards positive psychology along several different channels (Sandage & Hill 2001). For decades, Robert Sternberg has been a major luminary in the realm of psychology, and though his most prominent theoretical contributions have been in the area of intelligence testing, measurement, and definition, his overarching approach to psychology can also be seen as having a largely humanist bent (Sternberg 2001; Salovey & Mayer 2002). By defining intelligence in a much broader fashion and identifying different types of intelligence, Sternberg achieved great success in his attempts to better understand how people solve problems and react to situations generally (Sternberg 2001; Salovey & Mayer 2002). From these other theorist and psychologists of the twentieth century, the primary trend in thinking that has lead to the development of positive psychology can clearly be observed: understanding people as whole individuals that have already been equipped with the means of dealing with and deriving joy and satisfaction from their world is the new goal of psychology, as opposed to identifying peoples problems and fixing them. Seligman and Attachment Martin Seligman is considered the founder of positive psychology, and he was certainly the first person to put the concept of positive psychology forward in a concrete and explicit manner (Snyder 2002). Though many of the trends that developed into positive psychology were quite evident in the psychological theories of the twentieth century, they did not really coalesce until the dawn of the twenty-first (Seligman 2000; Sheldon & King 2001). Now, however, positive psychology is emerging as one of the dominant and most dynamic psychological schools. One of Martin Seligman's most foundational theories is his belief in the attachment principle as an early and fundamental need that must be fulfilled in order for happiness to be achieved again and again throughout life (Joseph & Seligman 2004). In other words, it is through interpersonal relationships that satisfaction and happiness as a person an be found, and indeed that it is possible to eventually become the person one was "meant" or at least capable of being, which is not really a new thought in psychology but that has been reformulated and refocused in positive psychology (Maslow 1946; Bandura 2010; S. Seligman 2000; Joseph & Seligman 2004). Stephen Seligman (no known relation to M. Seligman) has also published a paper concerning the importance of attachment, suggesting that the ability to form attachments is connected to the ability to distinguish between oneself and the external world, which is essential in most human functioning and definitely in deriving satisfaction from life (S. Seligman 2000). The concept of attachment has a great deal to do with he concept of love and simple belonging, especially in the framework of positive psychology (Joseph & Seligman 2004; Seligman 2000a). Affiliation -- identification with various social groups including family and often work relationships, networks of friends, etc. -- is another highly important and related concept. Maslow (1946) proposed belonging as one of the essential needs for self-fulfillment and eventual self-actualization, and this emphasis has received new vigor and even been endowed with a primal influence in positive psychology, rather than seen as a necessary crutch in more traditional modes of thinking (Seligman 2000; Joseph & Seligman 2004; Sheldon & King 2001). Enabling Institutions The most simple way to explain the framework of positive psychology is perhaps to define its opposite: while much psychological theory is focused on the inherent problems and negative potential of situations -- a feeling of admiration might stem from a feeling of personal inadequacy, etc. -- positive psychology sees the positive that arises from situations (Sheldon & King 2001). Alternatively, positive psychology has been defined as "an umbrella term for the study of positive emotions, positive character traits, and enabling institutions" (Seligman et al. 2005). Some of the basic emotions and character traits that positive psychology is primarily concerned with have been described above, but the manner in which these emotions can be brought about often receives little summative attention. Human beings do not exist, grow, heal, and find happiness in isolation, but must depend on certain social connections or "institutions" for these things to take place (Seligman et al. 2005; Seligman 2000; Joseph & Seligman 2004). The family can be seen as one such institution, and is usually the most important institution in an individual's life; their identity as a son, daughter, mother, father, husband, wife, brother, sister, etc. is usually one of the most defining roles in their lives (Seligman et al. 2005; Joseph & Seligman 2004). Even in conditions that might be labeled as "dysfunctional," these relationships can be very important to a sense of identity and self-worth, and thus can still be termed "enabling" (Seligman et al. 2005). While improvements could perhaps be made, the family remains necessary in enabling the achievement of satisfaction from life. There are also many other enabling institutions; pretty much any social network or group in which people interact has certain codified roles and a series of relationships that help to create the true personhood of every individual (Joseph & Seligman 2004). The work place provides many individuals with an arena in which to build tangible success and receive recognition for it, and also serves as one of the primary places for socialization for many adults (Seligman et al. 2005; Seligman 2000). Then there are official societies and clubs that many individuals belong to, form book clubs to country clubs, and online science fiction fan chat rooms to live-action role players that meet in the woods and hold mock battles between mystical realms -- all of these are enabling networks for those that belong to them, providing acceptance, affiliation, and ultimately love (Seligman et al. 2005; Joseph & Seligman 2004). Conclusion The American Psychological Association's Division 17 -- the Society of Counseling Psychology -- has a section dedicated towards positive psychology, but the branch of theory does not yet have its own division in the organization (APA 2011). Given how long it has taken for positive psychology to rear its head in a truly explicit and tangible form, this can not necessarily be deemed a huge fault of the psychological community. As time passes and the theoretical framework of positive psychology becomes more definite and more well-known, it will undoubtedly achieve its desired status alongside the other major theories and schools in psychology.
