Delivering Safe Water Access: PepsiCo believes water is a human right and its philanthropic arm The PepsiCo Foundation has helped more than 44 million people in underserved communities around the world gain access to safe water through distribution, purification and conservation programs since 2006, far surpassing its goal to reach 25 million by 2025. Building on the success of these programs, PepsiCo has set an ambitious new target to reach a total of 100 million people by 2030 and will focus its near-term work on water distribution, sanitation, and hygiene programs to bolster public health in the wake of COVID-19.
Sourcing Ingredients through More Sustainable and Resilient Agriculture: On farms around the world, PepsiCo is working to improve farmer livelihoods, while raising standards for efficient resource use, environmental consciousness, and worker rights. Through the company's Sustainable Farming Program (SFP), in 2019, nearly 80% of PepsiCo's farmer-sourced agricultural raw materials, like potatoes, whole corn, oranges, and oats were verified as sustainably sourced, meeting the SFP's robust criteria, progress towards meeting its goal to reach 100% by the end of 2020.
Accelerating Climate Action: PepsiCo reduced its absolute GHG emissions by 6% across its global value chain in 2019. In April 2020, PepsiCo affirmed its plans to accelerate action on climate change by signing the UN's Business Ambition for 1.5°C pledge, joining other leading companies in committing to set science-based emissions-reduction targets across its entire value chain, aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5°C, while also developing a long-term strategy for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This builds on PepsiCo's announcement earlier in the year that the company is shifting to 100% renewable electricity through a diverse portfolio of solutions for direct operations in the U.S., its largest market. Nine countries in PepsiCo's European business operations already use 100% of their electricity from renewable sources.

Reflection Post: Month 10
Should instructional designers be required to be industry certified to practice in the profession? Why or why not? 
In this age of ever-evolving technology, continued research on the psychology of learning, and increasing standards of excellence, it is important to consider the relevance and worth of the instructional designer. According to Dempsey and Van Eck (2012) the fact that instructional design only begins at the graduate level, does not necessarily ensure a quality education. This simple fact has lead to the proposal of a certification process for instructional designers, or at the very least, continuing education. Credentials are required for school psychologists (O’Donell & Dunlap, 2014), and instructional designers are required to construct material that follows current trends in educational psychology and science; I believe obtaining credentials would be a great idea and will serve to increase the credibility of our field and to showcase the educational principles we have learned.
While many will begrudge an industry certification process, it will prove beneficial in the long run. Consider the benefits of a standard for instructional design; improvements in quality and impact will certainly follow. As mentioned, even if a certification process doesn’t happen in the near future, continuing education is a great alternative. Technology is moving at a remarkable pace, so much so that it is difficult for one single industry to keep up. It is the collaborative efforts of an interconnected society that will best determine how this technology machine can best be used. In regards to instructional design, the current pace of technological advancement can render hardware, software, ideas, practices obsolete very quickly. Continuing education has the potential to assist our field in keeping up with advancement. 

2)  Explain why continuing education in instructional design and technology is important, and how you plan to continue to develop your technical skills to remain competitive in the field. 
Despite there being a lack of standardization in the form of continuing education for instructional design, a great deal rests on the shoulders of the instructional designer. We are expected to juggle many items at once; for instance, cognitive theories and behavioral theories while also keeping pace with, and pioneering, the field of instructional technology. This is where continuing education comes in. With the progressive nature of technology, the software and hardware that we initially learned the art of instructional design on can quickly become outdated. With continuing education, we can not only keep pace with technological advancements, but we can also open up a branch of instructional design dedicated to the pioneering of new techniques and technologies. Continuing education has the power to keep instructional designers in the loop (Gonzalez, 2016) as to what’s new in the world of educational material. At the very least, continuing education can come in the form of learning new and improved design, presentation, and storytelling techniques. This could be further developed by training and certification in such software suites as those offered by Adobe and other design-based software companies. There must be a balance, however, between the science of learning and creation of content that satisfies the appetite of this media hungry society while also offering educational content that is effective at delivering qualitative and quantitative learning outcomes. While continuing education hasn’t reached the ideal level or standardization quite yet, I think a community of practice is a great place to explore, share, and collaborate new ideas and techniques in the meantime. 
 3)  Considering how quickly eLearning theories and practices have evolved, and in anticipating more changes in the future, how will you ensure that you as an instructional design professional will keep abreast of future changes? 
 
 According to Dempsey and Van Eck (2012), “what will be important if we are to maintain the integrity of our field is to establish workable standards for our discipline that will recognize the important role of e-learning for the foreseeable future” (ch. 29, p. 287). Continuing education is ideal for keeping pace with future changes and improvements in the field of instructional design. As mentioned above, this can initially begin in the form of a community of practice. I believe, that a great place to start is Lynda.com which offers tutorial videos on everything from using Adobe Illustrator, to effective techniques in typography and the power of graphical hierarchy, as well as tutorials on how to improve one’s presentation techniques. As a professional instructor designer, it is my duty to not only seek out these tutorials and communities of practice for self-improvement, but to also share them with the peers that I have gone through this journey with. Staying ahead of the game, and furthering my own development, will prove beneficial in setting me apart from other instructional designers vying for a spot in the field. Skilling et al. asked “what does the future hold for the training industry at large? More and more companies are realizing that online training not only benefits them financially but also can train learners more effectively. If you’ve already made the transition its only going to get better” (2013, The shape of things to come section).  It would behoove me greatly to practice what I have been preaching and being diligent in my search for ways to improve my skills. At this point, it will come by way of experience. The sooner I find an outlet for these new skills and abilities that I have acquired, the sooner I begin the growing process within in the field. In the meantime, in my current position as a private instructor and part-time teacher, I have the unique opportunity to practice the techniques that I have learned throughout this journey. This will serve to keep my skills sharp and provide me with the necessary experience I need to progress in the field.
