many of the early rumors had it that she was a lesbian, and dating a pretty young woman with a taste for tweed suits; until it became clear that the pretty young thing with a taste for tweed suits she was found kissing in the library of the sorbonne after hours was not, in fact, a lesbian. he just had very long bangs.

but then, her boytoy was also her very gay husband's live-in secretary and research assistant. a real arthur-guinevere-lancelot triangulation, by all appearances:

and that was just what they liked. something to be said about being cleverer and more charming and more original than anyone else. most lovers feel like that. the whatelets had more cause for it than most.

alas, it so happens that this may-december threeway affair had its january-april fallout.

beyond closed door and closed windows, thing came to a head. after some intense intellectual debate and some intense intellectual threesomes, and a great deal of aquinas, and a great deal of st. paul's epistles, and some de beauvoir, the arrangement was found to be non-sustainable.

not least because dr. whatelet wanted to retire back to auvignon to be a beekeeper and try to win back his widowed first love, and professor whatelet was desperately bored of paris andwanted to apply to a senior position in stockolm.

also, their shared boytoy was having a spiritual epiphany no amount of unsacred kneeling could silence. there was that, too.

in conclusion:

professor and dr. whatelet got a divorce, a controversial uncatholic move that shook the foundations of their department.

it broke apart friendships. itlead to a number of low-simmering disputed coming to a head and several supposedly-unrelated resignations, and caused a domino effect of revealed scandals and anonymous letters-to-the-editor debacles.

a small but meaningful faction of the theological studies sphere was pulled through the who-kept-what-friends-and-what-grant nightmare. including a clever chessmaster that would one day become pope, who heard the confession of one:

thomas lawrence. young, successful and disillusioned manager of a london firm, his sabbatical to paris got him a reputation as a homewrecker.

he only barely shock it off by falling out of love with the whatelets, passionately in love with christ, quitting his soul-sucking job, joining a seminary, being extremely weird about chastity as both a theological ideal and a practical principle for nearly half a century, and outliving most anyone who ever heard about it.

except for the old pope, of course. his holiness was the one who celebrated the whatelets' purple marriage in the first place.

To me, Machete kind of has the energy of a secondary villain/coldhearted side character in someone else's story that a lot of fans latch onto, moreso than the protagonist. Question is, would he be the villain in anyone's story?

Why, thank you! I'm actually glad to hear he gives off that vibe. I don't think he set out to become a villain but a lot of people certainly view him as one.

Do you think Shadow Milk tried to fight back the corruption? That he slowly watched his beloved friends get consumed in hate and chaos, doing everything he could to stop it from spreading?

That he suffered when Eternal Sugar tried to lure him into leaving his labors? With Silent Salt ignoring his questions? With Burning Spice destroying his work and forcing him to star again? With Mistic Flour not caring about any of his ideas to help? Do you think he spend days and nights, investigating through books and old documents in search for a solution? Not sleeping, eating or letting anyone stop him from his objective that was saving them? Do you think he bursted in anger everytime someone dared to interrupt him or distract him? Do you think he begged the witches for help? They were gods to any cookie, and Shadow Milk probably was thinking that maybe there was something they could do to save the slowly falling souls of his friends. Do you think his heart broked when the witches decided the best course of action was to just impriosion them if things went worst? That he refused, and search harder and harder for a solution that wasn't that? Do you think that maybe he messed with something he shoudn't have?... maybe playing to much with dark magic wasn't such a good idea. Maybe he started to practice it, to learn it from end to start and do anything as a way of practice. Do you think he had burnout from studying so much? That he tried to distract himself, but ended up just more irritated because of the cookies asking for his aid, and his friends just loosing themselves more into it? Do you think his lies started by making the others blame eachother for their problems even if it wasn't true, just so they would leave him alone? Do you think that he found some twisted joy in seeing them fight and lost in lies? That he did it again and again, just to finally take a break from all the tiredness and boredoom of the books? Do you think that Shadow Milk tried to fight back when he saw themselve in the mirror, his hands with jam splatered from some poor victim from his tricks? Or that he just smiled even more at the joy and adrenaline it bringed to him? Do you think he fighted back? Or that he slowly let him self also fall?

im thinking about celestia and the abyss being literal opposites (chaos and order) and im thinking about childe and lumine being sort of embodiments of that, just not in the way we think. after the latest natlan quest its clear to us what the fatui intends and what they want- i think the tsaritsa more than anything loves humanity, which is why she directly opposes celestia who are known for bringing down different civilizations. childe, as Her weapon and Her blade is an extenction of that: he's a blade forged by the abyss, bathed in Her holyness, meant to strike down those who sin. lumine (talking solely about traveler lumine) is the literal sister of the prince of the abyss, she has clear ties to it and at this point in the story still is hesitant about fully opposing him (i love angst). her entire story revolves around chaose and disrupting celestia's (and the fatui's) order. isnt that fun

i think what childe longs for the most is control- control of himself, his life, his powers, his story, his fate. i think what lumine wants the most is freedom, which is just another phacet of chaos

anyways. you see it. the themes are theming
