Genshin: When you’re cold [V1]

Whenever I write these it’s always when I have a pile of requests on my desk that I said I was going to get to but never do. I even missed a day yesterday because I crashed and burned and slept the entire day haha. Might miss today too since I’m going out to see my mum. 

This is like 90% crack and 10% actual content. I’m gonna post this and proceed to have shock therapy and wipe it from my memory.

I just want to be happy and it’s cold af where I live. I’ve also learned from maagdalen that Russia is insane with snow.

Excuse me? What is this cold you speak of? He’s an adepti he doesn’t know what cold is. Is it a demon he’s not aware of? Should he go beat it into submission if that’ll make you feel better? He’s already gone with his spear and out to go slay this cold demon before you can explain what the hell temperature is. 

By the time he’s back, he seems so proud of himself for killing a dragonspine yeti that you don’t have the heart to tell him that was literally not what you wanted or expected him to do. Your fingers are about to break their finger kneecaps. pLEASE sir just hold my hand. 

Bad idea, he’s been outside in the cold and he’s not exactly wearing mittens so your fingers end up colder. But you’re finally holding his hand that you suck it up and cry when he does actually break your fingers because he doesn’t know what muscle control is.

Ruthless business woman one second and then you show up, tell her you’re cold, and she’s reduced to flustered mother hen. All she has on her are these long sleeves that all Qixing wear. Would you like some warm milk? She knows you like your milk heated to a simmer right at 187.7975 degrees Fahrenheit.

Okay, first off, who measures in fahrenheit anymore this is China Liyue. Second off, how the hell does she know that and why is it so precise? She’s already throwing whatever Liyue duties she had back at the poor worker that has no idea what possessed the normally confident and admirable Keqing into this...creature. Making new plans for a heating system in Liyue while also coddling you. 

Catch her outside at 3am pounding the snow ground, crying, as she curses Rex Lapis for making it so cold in Liyue when he’s not even the Cyro archon. Zhongli sneezed while looking over papers burning the 3am oil. Maybe he needs to go home before it gets too cold, he might be getting sick. 

Diluc

God you’re such an idiot. Didn’t you see how hard the snow was falling? I can’t believe I married someone with 2 braincells. Are you trying to give me a heart attack? What would father in the sky think if my partner died because of frost bite when I’m a goddamn pyro vision user? Oh you’re cold? It’s okay, here take her baron bunny to cuddle with while she lights a fire. She thinks she saw some boar’s in the forest, she can make her specialty and that should warm you right up! So sweet, so wholesome. Don’t worry this baron bunny won’t explode in your face, she tripled checked she wasn’t giving you a dancing bomb.

While you’re huddled around a summoning circle of baron bunny’s, nice and warm, is when she relaxes and joins you. She grins to herself and pats herself on the shoulder. See that haters, she can make her partner nice and happy without your #buffamberwhen. 

Kaeya

You’re cold? Maybe you’ve just fallen so hard for him that whenever you think of him you get cold. He never knew you cared so much it’s so cut- okok you can stop hitting him now. He’ll offer his scarf if he had one but Diluc might have burned it but he does have his tit window. 

Basically impenetrable, you could bounce bullets off it so naturally the cold bounces off. You have to tell him up front that he sound borderline crazy and the fbi are already at his door. The fbi is Diluc. So instead he offers his overcoat and asks you if you would like to join him in some cozy tavern that hopefully has heating. 

It’s a nice and comforting experience until he drags you to Angel share and you know it’s just to 1v1 Diluc in the parking lot.

Why did you choose your URL?

Welp, story time.

So when I was a kid we lived in this remote farm town where you had to drive like a half-hour to get to literally anything exciting, and the road happened to pass a llama farm. My mom and I drove past it so many times we literally made up names for the three most commonly-seen llamas, and dumb "predictions" based solely on which ones were on the big hill in the middle of the farm that day and which were grazing elsewhere, joking that they were the "Three Wise Llamas" and could tell the future.

Believe it or not, I wanted to do a gaming history blog at first, since I was just a baby collector, and also a place to put my weird Skyrim OC fanfiction. But then I also threw out a post with an observation on weird symbolism with Lemongrab's eyes in Adventure Time, and just kind of went from there.

Why did you choose your icon/pfp?

Because it's Lemongrab. That's all the reason I need.

This picture of a monochrome amber display just popped up on my dash one day, and happened to look really nice with my gray/orange theme, so I just stole it. Really, both of these just boil down to "They Looked Cool And I Am Lazy." XD

The biggest one was someone actually making a callout post for me once, for the crime of...unfollowing them? Except, uh, read up there. I DON'T follow most blogs, officially, so that was...awkward. Eventually got it all sorted out though, they found the person that actually unfollowed, and I guess...figured that out? I dunno, not to discourse, but that whole situation seemed REALLY weird and unnecessary to me in general.

And...I guess I'm on someone's shitlist because they once posted one of those "Do not interact with me if you have ever shipped X" posts, and I did back in the day (because it was literally the second-most common ship in that particular fandom at the time!) so I stopped interacting with them, and they blocked me? Oh well. *shrugs*

Hi, I love your stories and writing. I have a question that is in NO WAY a criticism about you, just a question about people's writings in general. This may also be a multi part question. So I've noticed in a lot of fandoms, people complain when female characters are constantly being sexually assaulted for a story. I know it happens often in real life, but it is annoying to see almost all the time. Like that Joss Whedon comment about a female superhero who he wanted toknow what horrible thing...

Wow! What an interesting, and potentially loaded, question. Lol I can see some people not liking my answer. If I chap some asses, just remember: it’s just one answer to an ask, and, if you have other thoughts, asks are always open. …Also, grab some cookies and a drink, because this may take a few minutes.

Is it safe to say, a majority (or at least, a good chunk) of, I’ll say, this fandom’s writers are women? My perception anyway, even if tumblr-ers don’t say in their headers or posts who they are. With that in mind, some of the bread and butter tropes for female writers and readers seem to be romantic plots, quite often with some version of a damsel of some situation or “fix me” trope in there somewhere. Why? Because who wouldn’t want some handsome, Chris Evans-looking beefcake to sweep them off their feet and make everything alright? Save me from this hell, let me love again, etcetera and so on. Same goes for, what I’ll call, the unnecessarily strong female character. Who doesn’t want to see some indestructible goddess stand up for herself or get her revenge? …But why are those our only options?

Part of the reason is how deeply ingrained these plots are in what we see in available fic and societally is typical and, most importantly, successful. Here’s a formula that works and isn’t it fun to see someone get revenge, take no shit, or whatever. Another reason, I think, is the escapism of it. Looking again at tumblr, there seems to be an awful lot of users who are “younger” and are experiencing, or have, some of these situations who may find a little inspiration or hope. “If the heroine can overcome this, so can I”. “The heroine did this, so will I”. Older ones may find it cathartic to put themselves into the heroine and say, “I did this”, “I survived this”, or as their own wish fulfillment. 

Either way, don’t we all like to see someone triumph? If it’s a reader insert fic, don’t we all want to win and have our happy ending? Of course, we do! But there does seem to be a misconception that to be successful or strong that you must suffer for it. Frankly, it’s just not true and, quite possibly, it can be damaging to keep perpetuating this myth.

Everyone can look around and see someone, whether they know them personally or not, who is a “strong female character”. A coworker, a celebrity, a friend who seems to have their shit together and a good attitude. If you ever hear them talk, they don’t have a tragic backstory. They just seem to make their own luck, keep moving forward, and their efforts succeed. I’d be shocked that anyone could honestly say they don’t know of someone like this.

But that’s not interesting. Sure, they’re nice people, and lucky them if they’ve had a “good” life, but where’s the fun in that? Where’s the drama? Shouldn’t they have to earn it? What are they hiding? …because isn’t it the easy way to write a character to follow a proven, winning formula? Everyone else has an angsty backstory, so why doesn’t she? Why are we so suspicious that you can’t have one thing without the other? Frankly, because it’s harder.

How do I make you root for someone who, for all appearances, is making their way through life on their own without being victim to someone else or circumstances? Answer: make them interesting. I think writers, and readers, forget that everyday heroines exist naturally, because of the overselling of the damaged character (male or female) only being able to exist or succeed because of the bad they’re forced to face or by leaning on someone else. I, personally, think more natural heroines exist in the world than writers would ever admit. Why? Because it’s not sexy; doesn’t sell. “Normal” is boring. Readers don’t want “reality”, no matter what AU or fantasy world you put them in. …I call bullshit on that.

If we, as writers, don’t put in the effort to create characters who are strong from their convictions, the way they were raised, the people they associate with, and the cognizant decisions they make, how will readers know they can and do exist? How can readers be interested, and maybe inspired, by them, if we don’t give them to them?

It takes effort to create a genuinely strong female character; to decide who a character is and why. It takes effort to come up with an interesting plot that has action, drama, romance, or suspense and can stand on its own without falling back on the old formulas/tropes. Also, it can be discouraging to create a strong heroine, who hasn’t been dropped into one of these cliched victim stories, and then see the story not gain a large following, get notes, or kudos. But god damn if I don’t see another victim to heroine story exploding in popularity, so I’m gonna write one too, right?

I know I sound bitter or high and mighty, like I hate or haven’t read some of these fics myself. I have. I’ll admit it. But I can honestly say that I’m typically disappointed, because the idea was there but the effort wasn’t. Maybe there was a great angle in the story, but the character never came along. “I’m hard, because this is how life did me wrong. Now, I’m made of steel and nothing and no one can hurt me ever again.” Okay…but how? Why? Is that even necessary?

Maybe it’s a lack of confidence in their heroine or in the writer themselves that has so many stories falling into these same overdone and unproductive devices. Maybe the writer doesn’t have the time or want to put in the effort. You see so many overdone plots or allegedly strong heroines (but who are more caricature than actual, developed characters) go on to be huge successes (on AO3, on TV, or at the box office) that why wouldn’t any writer who wants to have that for themselves follow their just add water recipe? 

Writers, no matter how big or small their following, have an opportunity to change the perception that a heroine, or hero, can be strong only because they have suffered. That’s a “writer challenge”. Think outside the box and recognize or discover healthy, inspirational, and reasonable approaches to creating and developing a character. Take time to build their world and actually plot their plot, and try new takes on how a heroine can navigate them. Not all good stories have to involve her surviving a physical or emotional trauma or tragedy to find herself/her strengths or save the day. Shit happens and heroes rise and fall by it, yeah. But does it have to be that much over and over and over again?

This is writing. Use your imagination! Be original! Be creative! Rebel against overused plots and tropes and underdeveloped characters! 

Tl;dr Honestly, there just aren’t enough people putting in the effort to break the cycle.

1. Why did you choose your url?

Grad school has increased my coffee consumption by…a lot. I don’t really think the amount of caffeine (mostly coffee) that I consume on a regular basis is healthy, so I’m basically living in a state of exhaustion flavored with near-constant jitters, heightened anxiety, and an underlying need to excel at everything I do. Thus, “overcaffeinated.” And there’s a joke about lemon bars being the official cake of bisexuals (instead of cookies or cake, when you come to the bi side, we have lemon bars). Also one time someone affectionately called me a lemon and I thought it was cute. So, overcaffeinatedlemonbar!

2. Any side blogs? If you have them, name them and why you have them.

I have two! @dawnwillbreaksoon gets a fair amount of my attention. It’s a Given fanblog. I became obsessed with the anime and for a while only blogged about Given, but I didn’t want that to be my defining factor, and I wasn’t sure I really wanted to share that interest with anyone, so I made a sideblog.

My other sideblog is @castle-full-of-books and it’s a bit more complicated lol. It’s kind of cottagecore? Kind of light academia? Kind of a plantblr? I honestly started it as a way to explore my own relationship with romance before I was ready to put a label on my sexuality/identity but when I was ready to admit to myself that I probably liked girls to some extent. Then I became obsessed with living in a castle for a while. Now it’s where I throw anything nature-ish & bookish that doesn’t quite fit on my main blog.

I think I joined in either 2013 or 14, so around 6 years I guess.

I…don’t honestly remember? I was in kind of a bad place mentally at the time, I think it was just to have a place to rant and be completely honest without scaring anyone any maybe to see if anyone else was facing similar things. Maybe I was intrigued by the fandom aspect? I’m truly not sure 😅

I made it for a picrew and just loved it! I feel like it represents “internet-me” very accurately. I wish I were confident enough to dye my hair that shade of purple in real life.

Have you seen how beautiful every frame of Your Lie in April is???? When I watched that series I HAD to use something from it for my header, and I love the stars. It’s just pretty, and I like it.

Umm…..I think it’s the one about using scent in fiction to tell more of the story. It started out as a rant about everyone saying Reki smells like tropical fruit/flowers and Langa like pine in like every fic I read that week but turned into actual writing advice.

These days very often, a quick check in the morning, a few brief check-ins throughout the day, and about half an hour as I wind down before bed. Sometimes I get sucked in and linger longer than I should lol. It goes through phases though. Sometimes I go months without logging in.

Nope, no fights! If something bothers me that much I just unfollow and/or block the person. I’ve also reported a few predatory posts. But I am not confrontational enough to fight anyone here. Tumblr is not where I’m going to make my stand.

I honestly don’t know what this is referring to? Have I curated my feed to be too niche and missed something?

i had just found out that the danish word for lion is løve. then out of curiosity, i looked up more lion-related words in the language and came across løvinde, which means lioness, so i just took out the i. also it’s perfect bc i’ve been associated with lions all my life. it’s basically a personality trait at this point.
