sans a few gpu/cpu config fixes a fresh install + all my packages of void linux is identical to a fully updated old one. Like maybe if you fucked up building something that doesnt have an uninstall script and don't know how to find all the files manually? I just see 0 purpose, is it different for other distros
For the most part, not really. There are some Linux users on this website who have royally fucked their systems beyond comprehension, and it would be easier and faster to just reinstall the OS than to actually fix anything going on there, and yet just continue to live every day like this. It's their computers, they can do what they want, but this is the level of "Not willing to reinstall the OS" I had in mind.
I am an opposite extreme, I have fun messing around with wiping and reinstalling my crap. It may have been a little unclear but I don't think this is necessarily ideal use, it's just not particularly painful or obtrusive cuz reinstalls (or wiping and putting a slightly different flavor) don't take all that much time and getting everything back in order, at least for me and with how I partition things, does not take very long.
Honestly though this time I'm just thinking of wiping Mint and going back to Debian for a few reasons, which technically isn't "reinstalling" but it reminded me of those horrifying setups that real Linux users out there willingly use every day.
ETA: I mean in general I don't relate to not wanting to futz around with the OS install but I am. an extreme case, basically.

When it comes to PC gaming, frame rates and user experience matter—even the best titles will suffer if their beautifully rendered virtual worlds slow to a crawl. But no matter your particular setup on Windows, you’ll find numerous tweaks that can ensure a smooth, frustration-free ride, and maybe that extra bit of responsiveness you need to succeed.
1. Update your graphics drivers
You won’t want to go into battle, hit the racetrack, or launch into space without having the latest Nvidia or AMD graphics drivers installed on your GPU. It’s one of the most important pre-game checks you can do, and it’s straightforward, too.
You may already have an Nvidia or AMD auto-update tool on your system, and you can check by searching for it from the taskbar. If not, you can download utilities from both Nvidia and AMD that will analyze the hardware on your system and get the right drivers from the web. You can also look for these drivers manually on the Nvidia or AMD websites.
If you’re not sure what graphics card you have installed, search for “device manager” from the taskbar and run the program that appears as the best match. Open the Display adapters list to see your GPU—you can even right-click on the entry and choose Update driver from here if you prefer.

On Grand Theft Auto V for PC, for example, choose Settings, then Graphics and Advanced Graphics to configure the screen resolution, maximum refresh rate, shadow quality, and how far into the distance the game renders scenery (all of which will affect how fast or slow the game runs).
3. Check for pre-installed software
If you've bought a gaming PC or laptop from a recognized gaming brand—such as Razer, Alienware, Gigabyte, and many others—it may have come with a utility or two for optimizing your gaming experience. We can't tell you about every software option for every gaming brand, but if you have a look through the installed programs on the Start menu, you should be able to spot any obvious candidates.
To give one example, Gigabyte gaming laptops come with the Aorus Control Center, which provides feedback on current GPU, CPU, and memory load. It also lets you boost the processor and graphics card speed, in return for a higher power draw and louder fan whirring, if you want to squeeze out some extra performance from your system.
If you can't find any such utility but think one should be there, it's always worth checking with the manufacturer directly (which usually means reading through the relevant support forums on the web). If you’ve bought a prebuilt gaming rig designed to be overclocked, you may find it comes with a utility for that very task.
It’s not an exact science, but you basically nudge up the speed of your CPU and/or GPU until you notice bugs and crashes, then dial it back down to a safe level. Apps like Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, AMD Ryzen Master, MSI Afterburner, and Asus GPU Tweak are good ones to start with to see what’s possible on your system.
7. Rely on plug-in power

In an effort to maximize battery life, Windows tends to dial down the performance settings when you're away from a power socket, so you should always be gaming while plugged in if at all possible. (This only applies to gaming on a laptop, of course.)
To check up on this and other battery and power configuration options and override them if necessary, open the Windows Settings dialog, then choose System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings. You’ll finally reach a dialog box where you’ll be able to make adjustments to how the system processor and graphics run on battery power.
8. Shut down background processes
When you’re busy gaming, you’ll want as little as possible running in the background, sucking up precious CPU, GPU, and RAM resources, as well as internet bandwidth. Close down non-essential, non-gaming programs from the taskbar by right-clicking on them and choosing Close window from the menu that pops up (if you’ve got any files open and unsaved, you should see a prompt asking if you want to save them).

Getting started with SQLite in Windows Store / WinRT apps
In this blog post I will expand the blog post by Tim Heuer  to include information on how to include and access a pre-populated SQLite database file, maybe even a file created by migrating from a SQL Server Compact database file, as I blogged about recently. First, download the "SQLite for Windows Runtime" Extension via Tools/Extensions and Updates/Online. Restart Visual Studio. Then add references to the SQLite and C++ extensions as described by Tim Heuer. Remember to change the Build Configuration to either x64 or x86 in Configuration Manager. Now add the sqlite-net nuget package to the project, from the References node, select "Manage NuGet Packages" and search online for "sqlite-net": This will add SQLite.cs and SQLiteAsync.cs to your project. Now add the SQLite database file to your project as Content: + If you want the database file to be writeable, you will have to copy it to your local appdata folder. Keep in mind, that when your app is uninstalled, the file will be removed. UPDATE: Instead of using the NuGet package mentioned below, use the package mentioned in this newer blog post: http://erikej.blogspot.dk/2014/10/entity-framework-6-and-sql-server.html In this post I will describe a simplified approach to SQL Server Compact Private Desktop Deployment with Entity Framework 6, for an overview blog post on Private Deployment with SQL Server Compact, see my blog post here. When using Private Deployment with Entity Framework 6, due to the fact that the EntityFramework.SqlServerCompact also installs the SQL Server Compact NuGet package, we must use a slightly different approach from what I described here in order to keep thing simple. The main difference is that we must force the project to use x86 Target Platform rather than AnyCPU, Prefer 32 bit. This is due to the fact that when running Prefer 32 bit, the SQL Server Compact ADO.NET provider loads the wrong files, as the PROCESSORPLATFORM in this case remains AMD64 on 64 bit systems, but the executing .NET Framework is the x86 version. To read more about the new default Platform target option introduced in .NET 4.5, see the MSDN documentation here, and the blog post here. In addition, I will demonstrate how to use my SQL Server Compact Toolbox to quickly get started with a Database First workflow. For the sake of simplicity, and in order to focus attention on the private deployment aspects, I will demonstrate with a console application, but the same approach will also work for WinForms and WPF applications. The approach will NOT work for dll output projects, like for example add-ins and similar, as it relies on configuration entries in app.config. And this blog post is about deployment, not layered architectures.  In short, we need to do the following: 1: Create a project and set Target Platform to x86 2: Add the EntityFramework.SqlServerCompact.PrivateConfig NuGet package to the project 3: Add our database file as project content 4: Create EDMX (or Code First classes) and adjust connection string 5: Add code to properly deploy the database file during app launch But let’s expand on each task below. Before you get started, make sure you have the following installed: 1: Visual Studio 2013 Pro or higher. 2: The latest version of  my SQL Server Compact Toolbox add-in (Install via Tools/Extensions in VS). The Toolbox requires the SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 and 4.0 SP1 runtimes to be installed (the 3.5 requirement will be lifted in the next release of the Toolbox) 3: An existing SQL Server Compact database file, I will use Chinook With that in place, let us open Visual Studio and get started: Create new console application Go to File, New Project, and create a new Windows Console application. Make sure to set the target platform to 4.0 or newer. Now set the Target Platform to x86 (this is an important step, if you forget to do this you will get a BadImageFormat exception during runtime/debug) Go to the project properties, and select the Build section/tab, and choose x86: Install Entity Framework 6 from NuGet To get the latest and greatest Entity Framework 6 bits, always install from NuGet. And thanks to the amazing package dependency resolution features of NuGet, just install the single required package, and the remaining packages will be installed as dependencies. In this case, the only thing that is missing from the EntityFramework.SqlServerCompact package (which depends on SQL Server Compact 4 and EF6) is a DbProvider registration in the app.config file, that enables you to run without the SQL Server Compact runtime installed in GAC and machine.config. To fix this “"misssing link”, I have created the http://www.nuget.org/packages/EntityFramework.SqlServerCompact.PrivateConfig/  package, which simply adds the missing config entries and in turn depends on all other required packages. It adds this to the app.config file: In other words, simply install the EntityFramework.SqlServerCompact.PrivateConfig package. Right click the References folder in your project, and select Manage NuGet Packages. Search for the package name and install it. And all required packages and references will be installed. (I am working on getting these config entries added to the base EntityFramwork.SqlServerCompact package, in order to make things more streamlined) Add your database file to the project I will use Chinook, which you can install from NuGet. But of course feel free to use your own database file. Find the Chinook SQL Server Compact database package, and install it: Make sure to mark the database file as Content, Copy Always in the project. I will describe later in this post how to place it correctly on the end users PC.  Create the Entity Data Model (EDMX) and adjust the connection string Build the project. Now in the SQL Server Compact Toolbox, connect to the database file in your project folder: Right click the database, and select the “Add Entity Data Model (EDMX) to current project” menu item: Click OK, and the EDMX file and various other files will be added to your project: Build the project. Now let us add some test code to the Main method in order to verify that everything works so far:using (var context = new ChinookEntities()) { foreach (var album in context.Album.ToList()) { Console.WriteLine(album.Title); } } Console.ReadKey(); We can now access the database via the generated object model, and do not have to type SQL, but can use LINQ to Entities to query the database. In addition, we can update the database (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE) via methods on the derived DbContext class, ChinookEntities. In app.config, the following connection string has been added: In order to make the connection string user and folder independent, change the data source as follows: Deploy the database file The final step will be done to ensure that the database file will be located in a writeable location on the users machine when deployed/installed. We will simply do this in code in order to not depend on any install actions and issues. We will use the same approach that I have already used in my blog post here, which takes advantage of the DataDirectory connection string macro. So add this piece of code to the Program class:private const string dbFileName = "Chinook.sdf"; private static void CreateIfNotExists(string fileName) { string path = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.ApplicationData); // Set the data directory to the users %AppData% folder // So the database file will be placed in: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\ AppDomain.CurrentDomain.SetData("DataDirectory", path); // Enure that the database file is present if (!System.IO.File.Exists(System.IO.Path.Combine(path, fileName))) { //Get path to our .exe, which also has a copy of the database file var exePath = System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName( new Uri(System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().CodeBase).LocalPath); //Copy the file from the .exe location to the %AppData% folder System.IO.File.Copy( System.IO.Path.Combine(exePath, fileName), System.IO.Path.Combine(path, fileName)); } } Remember to add a call to CreateIfNotExists as the first line in the Main method: static void Main(string args) { CreateIfNotExists(dbFileName); You can now use ClickOnce, XCopy or an Installer to deploy your app (the files in the release folder), with no other requirements than the target .NET Framework version. Uninstall the 4.0 runtime from your PC in order to test (and/or test on another PC without SQL CE 4.0 installed) What we have achieved: - Simple, self contained deployment of a single user desktop app of any type to any .NET 4.0 or higher platform (not ARM, though) - Automated creation of the required settings in app.config via NuGet packages - RAD (Rapid App Development) “Database First” access to a well-performing, well-documented and powerful ORM. How to Get Cydia Without Jailbreaking Unfortunately, it isn't possible to get the real Cydia without jailbreaking your device. This is because Cydia relies on access to your iPhone's system files that only a jailbreak can give. Luckily, jailbreaking has become a very easy process. If you really want Cydia on your iPhone, you can jailbreak and have it installed in less than an hour. Step 1 Learn why jailbreaking is essential for Cydia. Cydia is a package manager for jailbroken iPhones. It relies on access granted to your iPhone's system by the jailbreak process. Without a jailbreak, Cydia is completely useless. There is no way to actually install Cydia on your iPhone without jailbreaking. Any site or guide that claims to allows Cydia to be installed is a scam or will result in a fake Cydia icon. Nine tweaks to supercharge your gaming PC
You think you might need a new PC to boost up your gaming? Try these tips first. (Fredrick Tendong / Unsplash/)
When it comes to PC gaming, frame rates and user experience matter—even the best titles will suffer if their beautifully rendered virtual worlds slow to a crawl. But no matter your particular setup on Windows, you’ll find numerous tweaks that can ensure a smooth, frustration-free ride, and maybe that extra bit of responsiveness you need to succeed.
1. Update your graphics drivers
You won’t want to go into battle, hit the racetrack, or launch into space without having the latest Nvidia or AMD graphics drivers installed on your GPU. It’s one of the most important pre-game checks you can do, and it’s straightforward, too.
You may already have an Nvidia or AMD auto-update tool on your system, and you can check by searching for it from the taskbar. If not, you can download utilities from both Nvidia and AMD that will analyze the hardware on your system and get the right drivers from the web. You can also look for these drivers manually on the Nvidia or AMD websites.
If you’re not sure what graphics card you have installed, search for “device manager” from the taskbar and run the program that appears as the best match. Open the Display adapters list to see your GPU—you can even right-click on the entry and choose Update driver from here if you prefer.
Drivers handle the communications between your graphics hardware and the software on your system (including installed games). The newer and more up-to-date your drivers are, the faster and smoother that communication will be. That applies to OS-level software updates, too—make sure to check if you have any pending via Update & Security in Windows Settings.
2. Check the in-game options
Every game has its own set of configuration options, and it's worth spending time to familiarize yourself with them, as tempting as it might be to just launch into the action as quickly as possible. These settings can make a significant difference, and it's worth losing a few pixels overall if it means that the ones left on screen are moving more smoothly.
Obviously we can’t give you instructions for every single game out there, but these settings shouldn’t be too difficult to find—they’re often available on a game’s opening splash screen. On Grand Theft Auto V for PC, for example, choose Settings, then Graphics and Advanced Graphics to configure the screen resolution, maximum refresh rate, shadow quality, and how far into the distance the game renders scenery (all of which will affect how fast or slow the game runs).
3. Check for pre-installed software
If you've bought a gaming PC or laptop from a recognized gaming brand—such as Razer, Alienware, Gigabyte, and many others—it may have come with a utility or two for optimizing your gaming experience. We can't tell you about every software option for every gaming brand, but if you have a look through the installed programs on the Start menu, you should be able to spot any obvious candidates.
To give one example, Gigabyte gaming laptops come with the Aorus Control Center, which provides feedback on current GPU, CPU, and memory load. It also lets you boost the processor and graphics card speed, in return for a higher power draw and louder fan whirring, if you want to squeeze out some extra performance from your system.
If you can't find any such utility but think one should be there, it's always worth checking with the manufacturer directly (which usually means reading through the relevant support forums on the web). You may need to manually download the utility if it wasn't installed when the computer was put together (or if you've inadvertently removed the application without realizing what it is).
4. Find your own optimization software

You don’t have to settle for the optimization software package that came with your PC (if there is one), because there are plenty of alternatives available. Razer Cortex is free and one of the best, and you don’t need a Razer machine to use it. It’ll intelligently allocate system resources to your games when they need them, limit non-gaming apps, and generally squeeze as high a frame rate as possible from your hardware setup.
Game Fire is another option that offers a similar array of tweaks and optimizations—shutting down unnecessary background processes, making sure your rig is using RAM efficiently, and watching out for potential slowdowns on your internet connection. It will set you back $18, but there’s a free version with basic functions included so you can decide if you like it (and see if it actually makes a difference) first.
5. Free up some disk space
Games handle huge amounts of data as you roam around the virtual worlds they create, so the more free disk space you can offer them, the better. If storage space is at a premium on your system, you might have already noticed games starting to struggle and slow down as a result.
Making sure there’s plenty of empty space on your hard drive is a boring but effective way of maximizing your chances of having a smooth gaming session. Get rid of games, applications, and files that you’re no longer using and reap the benefits—you can transfer files to the cloud if you need to, and uninstall programs from the Apps section of Windows Settings.
6. Overclock your computer
Overclocking—pushing your system components beyond manufacturer-approved limits—used to be the exclusive domain of gaming enthusiasts, but now just about anyone can give it a try. The software applications are easier to use than ever, though we'd recommend doing some reading around the topic first just to give yourself a grounding. It's also important to note that overclocking is done at your own risk (you'll almost certainly void your hardware warranties).
Overclocked components mean faster gameplay, but you’ll need a CPU and/or GPU that’s been built with overclocking in mind. Many now are, but it’s worth double-checking your system specs. If you’ve bought a prebuilt gaming rig designed to be overclocked, you may find it comes with a utility for that very task.
It’s not an exact science, but you basically nudge up the speed of your CPU and/or GPU until you notice bugs and crashes, then dial it back down to a safe level. Apps like Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, AMD Ryzen Master, MSI Afterburner, and Asus GPU Tweak are good ones to start with to see what’s possible on your system.
7. Rely on plug-in power

In an effort to maximize battery life, Windows tends to dial down the performance settings when you're away from a power socket, so you should always be gaming while plugged in if at all possible. (This only applies to gaming on a laptop, of course.)
To check up on this and other battery and power configuration options and override them if necessary, open the Windows Settings dialog, then choose System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings. You’ll finally reach a dialog box where you’ll be able to make adjustments to how the system processor and graphics run on battery power.

8. Shut down background processes
When you’re busy gaming, you’ll want as little as possible running in the background, sucking up precious CPU, GPU, and RAM resources, as well as internet bandwidth. Close down non-essential, non-gaming programs from the taskbar by right-clicking on them and choosing Close window from the menu that pops up (if you’ve got any files open and unsaved, you should see a prompt asking if you want to save them).
Plenty of Windows programs like to run in the background just in case you need them—you’ll usually see these down in the notification area or system tray in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. To check what’s running in the background, right-click on a blank area of the taskbar and choose Task Manager, then Processes (if you can’t see the Processes tab, click More details).
Shut down anything on the list that you’re not actually using by selecting it and choosing End task. If you’re not sure what is a specific process, run a quick web search on it—some of them might be necessary for your games and Windows itself. A little bit of trial and error may be required here.
9. Turn off notifications
Getting an email notification halfway through a particularly grueling capture the flag level might not make a huge difference in terms of performance, but it definitely isn't going to help your concentration. It may also mean the difference between victory and defeat for you or your team.
Manage notifications from the System and Notifications & actions section of Windows Settings, or choose System, then Focus assist to set particular times of the day when notifications aren’t active. You can also mute notifications through the Xbox Game Bar app built into Windows—hit Win+G to bring it up.
