Genre: angsty AF but happy end don't worry

Summary: you and Max get to grow together. Neither of your dads being the best parenting model. When Max sees what your dad has don’t to you, he knows something has to be done.
Warnings: Jos Verstappen, depictions of most forms of abuse, descriptions of injuries
Notes: written in second person. I’ve noticed a theme with my writing… we’re just going to ignore it and I will continue to heal my trauma this way :)

Everyone expected great things from you. Expectations you wanted so badly to meet. Yet you always felt like you were falling short.
Your father is a Redbull mechanic. A good one at that. He's incredibly smart and respected within the paddock. One of Max's top engineers.
Your mother had left during your childhood. This means you got to spend your time traveling everywhere with your father. Him even being your teacher until you started online school and graduated.
Christian offered you a job that involved being on the pitwall. One you took happily. It meant you didn't have to spend the race in the garage with your dad.
From the outside, you looked happy. But you weren't up to standard with what your father wanted. You weren't perfect.
Behind closed doors, things were much different. You were blamed for your mothers disappearance. Blamed for your fathers woes. Used as a physical and verbal punching bag to help him feel better.
All the while, you convinced yourself it was for his benefit. That you deserved this for not being what your father wanted. He provided for you all these years, why couldn't you do this for him.
When Max started at redbull, both of you were still young. Regardless, the friendship was meant to be. No matter how much wither of your fathers hated it.
It led to secret rendezvous and stolen moments of escape with each other. You understood him and he understood you.
Max failed to realize how you understood. His dad was open with his behaviors. Jos had yet to back down from a session of publicly shaming his child. Your dad didn't do anything close to that. So how on earth could you know exactly what he needed during those hard nights.
He'd asked Christian about it a few times. Why you were so shy and timid around adults. It was difficult to understand.
Christian had told him not to worry about it and to focus on his racing. He was watching out for you.
It was true. Christian had been your Guardian angel on multiple occasions. Even staying with his family over long breaks why home was too difficult. He made sure you were fed and had clothes that fit. Everything you lacked in your own house.
The one thing that stopped him from getting him away from you is that you never explicitly told him or showed any signs of it. He was working on assumptions and possible hints.
He'd tried to catch anything that would give him a leg up, but he'd yet to het anything.
Your relationship with Max grew over the years. The two of you melded. You knew how to tame the Mad Max that fought to escape, and he knew how to soothe your tears.
You found solice in each other. Stability in your friendship. A love you both were willing to fight for.
Which happened a lot.
Neither of you knew how to communicate properly. Resulting in hard arguments and yelling matches. One of you is always shutting down before any real reconciliation can happen.
Christian got to be a father to both of you in this way. Coaching you two on how to express your feelings healthily. He was routing for you two. Knowing both your fathers weren't the best, you and Max needed to learn and love with someone safe. He was glad to take you both under his wing.
Then you were able to flourish. You started smiling more. Your eyes lost the bags from underneath them.
Max started opening up more. Standing up to his father slowly became easier. His smile and silly attitude got to be more prominent.
You started showing affection to each other in public. Openly spending time with the other. Not caring what either of your fathers thought.
After all, you were both adults. Right?
You thought everything was going to be over when you moved in with Max. You were nervous about it, mainly because you were self-conscious about your body. Nevertheless, you knew it would be a good change.

It was a soft moment between you two. Your giggles as Max left chaft kisses all over your face made him smile.
He felt bad for looking. He knew you were struggling with insecurities, and he wanted to respect your privacy.
But as your shirt inches up your body, he catches sight of the dark marks along your hips and torso.
He immediately stopped everything. His breathe hitched in his throat.
You looked where his eyes had landed. The secret finally out. One part of you wanted to be relieved, but right now you were panicking. Your brain reeling with every possible outcome.
You did the first thing that came to mind. You apologized. You begged him not to tell anyone. Tried to convince him that it was your own fault. Your breath becoming more uneven with every word.
Max was taken off guard. He knew it had been bad, but he’d never seen it and you’d never shown him. His emotions were bubbling to the surface rapidly. But you didn’t need him to be angry with your father right now.
He removes his hands from your body to give you space. He didn’t want to scare you anymore then he already had. “Don’t apologize, none of that is your fault, okay.” It felt like he was trying to soothe a wild animal. “Can I hold you?”
You nodded your head yes. Eyes moving rapidly to every sound. Your senses hyper aware of everything happening.
He reached out for you slowly, making sure to stay within eye view. Something that helped him when he’d come to you. Slowly you made your way into his arms. Basking in the way he felt like safety.
“We don’t have to talk about it now, but when you’re ready I’m going to spend hours kissing all your bruises better.”

The next morning, Max took it slow. You both were needed at the track but he wasn’t in a rush. He wanted to give you time. You’d fallen asleep in his arms. Him soothing every tear that ran down your cheeks.
When you two arrived together, he made his way through the back entry with you in tow. Attempting to avoid cameras and your father. He needed to make sure you got somewhere safe first before he even attempted talking to his lead engineer.
He immediately went to Christian. His face when he saw you two approach made Max want to turn around.
“I can see on your face that you want to punch someone.” Christian sighs in exasperation.
Max looks between his team principal and you. Words now refusing to form in his mouth. How was he supposed to explain this? “Can Y/N stay with you while I run around doing things.”
Christian hesitates, confusion evident. “Only if you tell me what’s going on.” He could see you were in pain. You looked like you’d been crying.
Max leaned into whisper. Worried about cameras and the nearing possibility of your father spotting you two. “It’s worse then we thought.”
Christian rubbed his temples. Motioning for Max and you to follow him into his office. The door closing the a soft click behind them. Neither sat down, the anxiety too much for either of them.
Christian was trying to get a read off of you. You, however, had yet to even look at him. Your body language had reverted back to when you were small. When he let you pretend to work on the cars. It hurt him.
He was about to say something when a knock sounded at the door. A rough knock. A familiar knock. You flinched away from the door. Your survival instincts kicking in.
Christian motioned for you two to sit down. Max gently gripping your wrist to get you to follow him. You flicked unintentionally but he just looked at you knowingly. You needed to move and he was just trying to help.
You sit down across from Christian. Max’s leg was bouncing up and down so fast you thought he might put a hole in the floor.
“Come in.”
You don’t turn around when the door closes. You can hear his breathing. Aware of his every move without even seeing him. Fighting every urge to run away.
“Oh- I was looking for Y/N. We need to go over some data.” He picked up on your fear. You knew it as he walked directly behind you. His hand gripping your shoulder.
You flinched and turned away from his hand. The tension in the room was to thick for you to breath. Max was already out of his chair and ready to connect his fist with anything.
Christian put his hands in between the two men. Aware of the still open door and people peaking inside.
You were trying to cower away from the aggression. Away from the onlookers. Into the safety of Max.
“I think Y/N was busy going over some things with Max, but I’d be happy to look at it.” Christian gave his best attempt at a neutral smile.
Your father was growing angrier. It’s the first time he’d openly tried anything. The grip he had on your shoulder already bruising.
“Busy doing what? Trying to ruin her future even more?”
Max saw red. He was already angry, but now he’d crossed a line. He knew he shouldn’t have done it. However, the feeling of his fist connecting with the jaw of your fathers was to satisfying for him to care.
Your father reeled backwards. His hands clutching his face.
You jump from the chair. Finding refuge behind Max's body.
Max was ready to go for another swing. Before he could lunge, Christian grabbed his shoulder.
"Why don't you Teo cool off in Max's driver room. I'll come find you later."
Max didn't move. His chest heaving. The two men willing eachother to make a move.
You take Max's wrist. Gently trying to lead him through the door.
You, however, didn't get far. Your father knew something was wrong the second he saw you come into the garage. He’d been around Max long enough to know that he’s a protector. He knew that if you wanted, you could ruin his entire life.
So, he lunged for you. Grabbed hold of your hair and pulled. You were in his grip again before Max could even register what was happening.
“Max, go get security.”
“But-“
“Your going to be faster then me.”
Reluctant, Max sprints out of the garage. Making his way swiftly to the nearest security checkpoint. He was grateful it was only Thursday. The amount of fans in the paddock significantly less and he didn’t have to drive with his adrenaline already so high.
You were silently pleading that Christian is able to talk some sense into your father. His previously free hand now covering your mouth.
You’d been here before. Breath. Hold. Exhale. Repeat. The mantra you’re mind recited through your entire childhood.
You could see Christian saying words but couldn’t hear them. He was trying to get closer but the hold on you became stronger with each step he took.
Your mind goes blank for a moment. Your body present but your mind dissociated. You can see the interactions take place, but you don’t feel present, or even real.
He is shaking you now. Your body jostling. Then the floor. More footsteps.
Max.
He’s leaning over you. Checking to see if your okay. You can see the panic in his eyes. A soft blue that you will your mind to latch onto.
You can hear him now. He’s whispering to you. “Your safe now” falling like a prayer from his lips.
Max cradles you in his arms. Holding you close as the noises of your father struggling slowly get quieter.
Christian also appeared at eye level. Crouching down beside the two of you. “I’m so sorry that I didn’t see it.”
“I didn’t want to cause my trouble.”
“You never cause trouble.” A smile ghosts across Christian’s face for a moment. “Your dad will not be allowed back into the paddock. And you already know, but if you ever need a place you’re welcome at our home.”

Unfortunately, the events that transpired were within view of people and cameras. Christian deemed it a ‘family emergency’ and let you two go back to the hotel. Leaving the media Max needed to do for tomorrow and Checo to replace Max at the press conference.
Now you and Max lay facing each other on the bed. Neither has said very much. Only trying to process the events.
Then you remember something Max said last night. “Can you kiss it better please?”
Max smiled softly and inched himself closer to you. “Stop me if it becomes to much.” You nod at him.
He lifts up your Redbull polo uniform just above your waistline. Placing gently kisses to every place on your body that your father had marked in some way.
He pulled you into him after he finished. The two of you just staying their. Embracing the new possibility of peace you’d both wanted for so long.

The Minnesota Frost's post-game press session after their Takeover Tour match against the Montréal Victoire in Dever, CO.
At the table were head coach Ken Klee, goalie Maddie Rooney, and defender Sophie Jaques.

Reporter:
How’d Denver go for you guys?
MADDIE ROONEY:
Yeah, it was awesome. How they were loud, they were fun. But you know at the previous Takeover Tours we saw the attendance for that and then for 14,000 to show up for today? It was really special to play in front of.
Reporter:
Sophie [Jaques], you, obviously, your first game back. Two points. Are you still 100%? And how did it, obviously, feel being back on the ice?
SOPHIE JAQUES:
Yeah, I think definitely the first period I was getting back into it, but it felt great once I was out there and just excited to be back on the ice with the team.
Reporter:
Coach, the last 5 games between Montréal have been decided either in a shootout or a one goal difference. What makes these matches so competitive?
KEN KLEE:
Well, I don’t think it’s just Montréal. I think it’s every team. I think every team in the league is so tight. The margin for error is so slim that, you know, you have to be on your game. If you don’t play well you’re not gonna win it. Especially in our league. There’s only six teams, you look at the talent that’s spread throughout. The talent is really high, I think, on every team. So it’s exciting. It’s great for us. We’re finding ways to get points. And that's- Right now, at this point in the season, that’s all I keep preaching. Just, we gotta do the little things well and just keep getting points.
Reporter:
I just- I guess- As someone who’s spent some time here, what was it like to see 14,000 people show up for a women’s hockey game?
KEN KLEE:
It was awesome. I mean it was incredible. To showcase these ladies’ talents is- You know, that’s what it’s all about to me. It’s about growing the game; you know, the women’s hockey game, how far it’s come, since I first got involved in 2014? It’s remarkable. Now to see- you know when people were asking me yesterday at practice, “Well, how’s it gonna be? We haven’t seen them live.” I said, “You wait, you’re gonna see something and you’re gonna say, ‘That’s incredible.’” And they are incredible.
Reporter:
For either of the players, like, walking around before the game, there’s so many young girls walking around in, like, their own jerseys. In like- with their teams. Whenever you’re meeting them before practice or before games, what is it like to see little girls in their hockey jerseys looking up to you?
MADDIE ROONEY:
Yeah, that’s what it’s all about. I mean, when I was a kid, you know, I watched the NHL, but for those girls now to be able to watch the PWHL? It’s really cool to create those- or have those role models that we necessarily didn’t have as a kid beside- outside the national team. So super special. And it’s great visibility for them to be in the stands as well.
Reporter:
Maddie, at the start of the game Montréal had a little bit of a shots lead and they obviously opened the scoring. What does it say about the maturity of this group to push back in this game the way they did?
MADDIE ROONEY:
Yeah, we responded to every goal really well. And that game was a grind. A lot of these games are a grind. It was chippy. But we ultimately bared down. We blocked shots, got pucks out, and capitalized on our opportunities.
Reporter:
Did it- For either of you, did it feel like a little bit of a home game because, I would think it would obviously because of Nicole [Hensley]?
SOPHIE JAQUES:
Yeah, I think it was great to hear- to have the fans behind us when we scored and stuff was really cool. They made- they did a great of accommodating us here and it was really cool to be in the Avalanche locker room here. And I think it was great that the crowd was just loud in general; it really feeds into the excitement of the game.
Reporter:
Coach, with both teams neck-in-neck for the top spot how was this a measuring stick for you?
KEN KLEE:
Well, I mean it’s points. Like I said, right now it’s not about what standing we are, we’re just trying to get points. We know come- down the stretch here we’ve got a lot of games this month, but later on we don’t have many games. So we need to try to accumulate as many points as we can now, so that way we can get yourself into a playoff spot. Then once we do that, it’s- then the match-ups start mattering more to me. But right now, like I said, it’s just awesome that we’re finding ways to get points. We’ve been a little banged up. Obviously her coming back today [gestures to Jaques] is a big lift for us. But we still have two more games on the road coming up so we know they’re gonna be tough. Just gotta keep battling and get ready.
Reporter:
For either Sophie or Maddie, how hard is it to take all the excitement in playing in different buildings and all that stuff and still focus on what coach is talking about there? Just playing hockey and getting points?
MADDIE ROONEY:
Yeah, I don’t think it’s hard. It kind of aides in the excitement. Each night is a different atmosphere to play in front of and overall it’s just fun. It’s fun to play in front of a bunch of fans and, like we talked about, growing the game.

And I know Nicole didn’t get to play today, but does sharing this whole weekend and experience, for any of you guys, what was that like? And you know, she did the ceremonial puck drop [everyone smiles], you don’t usually see goalies doing that. How great was that, getting to share that with her?

Well I thought it was great. Obviously it was unfortunate that she got injured last week. But I was happy to have her back on the bench to be here with us supporting our group. But yeah, it’s a homecoming for her. I know it was a big game for her, important for her. But still, she’s with our group. She’s gonna play meaningful games. She knows it. Between her and Maddie, they’re really tight. They always support each other. So it’s good to see.

Sophie, what was your look on Michela [Cava]’s in the third period? It looked like she got a really great shot?
SOPHIE JAQUES:
Pardon?
Reporter:
What was your look on Michela’s goal in the third period? It looks like it was a really fantastic shot and I imagine you had a great view of it?
SOPHIE JAQUES:
Yeah, I mean, honestly, I was kinda- the defender was blocking me, but I just saw it go into the top of the net and was very excited for her.

Coach, obviously it was a pretty raucous environment; they announced a crowd of almost 11,000 here in Lenovo Center. I mean, can you just put the environment into words? I mean, seems like the fans were engaged from the first puck drop until, you know, the handshake line tonight.
CARLA MACLEOD:
Yeah and I think it started even earlier than that to be honest. Incredible crowd. And really fun to see their energy and, to your point, the engagement in the game. Obviously a little favored to Minnesota, which we can appreciate being down here in the U.S. But so enjoyable. You see these, in the breaks too, different songs are coming on and it’s like a karaoke crew out there. So yeah, it was a lot of fun to be able to play in front of that many people. It’s never been lost on us what a privilege that is and tonight was absolutely that.
Reporter:
To piggyback off that, I know the league is trying to expand, you know, with the [takeover] tour and everything. Is this a venue that you could see potentially having a team here? I mean, just by what you saw from the fans tonight, do you think this is a place that, you know, pro women’s hockey could have a home in?
CARLA MACLEOD:
Well it certainly looked like it tonight, you know, if you’re out there and you see that. And I think these Takeover Tour locations have been a lot of fun for all the teams involved because it just- the excitement amongst the different communities. And you know, everyone’s sort of putting their best foot forward, it feels like, to say, “Hey, look, we could be in this league as well in this location.” So certainly tonight the crowd was, you know, obviously, doing their best to sell it and we thought they did a great job.
Reporter:
Gwyneth, what did you see in front of you in the 3rd period—as the team kind of poured it on a little bit—that you could think they can carry forward into the next game against the Frost?
GWYNETH PHILIPS:
Yeah, I think we started to pick it up a little bit during the third, but you know we- there’s definitely still a lot to work on. And we’re kind of 1-for-1 now so I think we have a lot riding on the next game. It’s gonna be a fun time.

Gwyneth, it felt like, you know, with some of the videos that were on the jumbotron out there, I mean, just growing the sport of professional- or just women’s hockey in general. What does it mean to you to kind of be one of these role models for a 6, 7, 8 year old out there who’s wearing your jersey, wearing your colors, and chanting your name? Just how cool is it to be someone that little girls look up to?
GWYNETH PHILIPS:
Yeah, it’s still surreal. Like you say, we say, we’re living the dream and it’s like we are someone’s dream. And it’s really cool. And having now a little girl can look up and see like, oh, that can be me. I think that’s what’s so special about these takeover tours: it gives little girls from other locations the chance to see it and see that it’s a real thing. And I think, like, down in Raleigh, like in the South, or over in, we were in Edmonton, way over on the other coast, it’s still like- the PWHL is like this entity, but now it’s like it’s a real thing I think when people see it. So it’s just a lot of fun. Like coach said, seeing everyone cheering and- even if we weren’t really the home crowd today, it’s still just cool to see all the support we get. See the girls so excited. And the older woman who didn’t get a chance to do this? People forget about them, but it’s really cool to see how happy they are too.
Reporter:
Coach, you talked a little bit yesterday about just being able to get the shots that you wanted offensively. Today what did you see in this game? And how do you want to make sure the team moves forward?
CARLA MACLEOD:
Yeah, we struggled today. That was obvious; scoreboard and a few other variables that are easy measurables. Just- the start wasn’t ideal by any stretch of the imagination. And, you know, when you start half- you have to dig out after the first period and you’re down 3 it’s never easy. Minnesota’s a great team. They’re the reigning Walter champions, it’s not lost on us, so it’s never like you’re gonna get a freebie night. But it felt like maybe as the game went on, a little bit in the third there, had a little bit more momentum, had some high-quality chances at least which we had been lacking earlier in the game. So, you know, there were some adjustments made and just kind of finding our legs under us to create those opportunities. But we know we have to be better. We know we have to be grittier. Our passing has to be A LOT better. So there were some mismanaged pucks tonight that hurt us. But this is a league that as quick as you win is as quick as you can lose. And at the end of the day you’ve got to park things and just make sure you’re getting better for the next game. We talked about it in the room, you know, we gave them a lickin’ a couple games ago, they gave us a lickin’ tonight. Now we go at it again on Tuesday. So it’s a nice rivalry, it’s a great opponent, and we look forward to Tuesday night.
Reporter:
Gwyneth, I want to come to you, it was just announced just now that you’ll represent Team USA in world championships. Can you just talk through what it was like to get that announcement and what it would be like to participate in World’s in Czechia?
GWYNETH PHILIPS:
Yeah no, it was an honor to be named to the team. I really can’t wait. I think- it’s been something I’ve been working towards for a long time. And I think every practice with the Charge I get a lot better and I’m excited to show that at the highest level. But right now we’re just- we’ve got a few more games left with the Charge until then so one thing at a time, focusing on that.
Reporter:
And Carla, you’ll have, presumably, a few players that will be able to represent their country. What is it like for you to know that you’re able to coach some of those players in this league?
CARLA MACLEOD:
Yeah, it’s a privilege. Both opportunities are really incredible in my opinion. It’s thrilling to see Gwyneth get her opportunity with Team USA; it’s well earned. That’s why she’s there: she’s earned it. And for all the players that get the opportunity to go the World Championship, it’s an incredible experience. It’s something we’ve all dreamed about in our sport for the longest time. That’s- it’s been the pinnacle and it’s still up there. So, you know, for me it’s just exciting to see, like I said to you before, the human piece resonates more than any emblem on the front of a jersey, so I want all our players that we coach here in Ottawa to do well when they get the opportunity with their respective national teams.
Reporter:
Piggybacking off of that, it’s never easy for a goaltender to come in and relief in a game like this. Can you talk about her performance in tonight’s game? Especially, you know, she stopped a couple of point-blank shots there later in the game.
CARLA MACLEOD:
Yeah, and like- [gestures to and looks to Philips] I’ll speak for you ‘cause the question was directed at me, but you can tag in at any point.
GWYNETH PHILIPS:
[chuckling] All you.
CARLA MACLEOD:
Like, if I’m not mistaken, it’s probably just part of your job?
[Philips makes a shoulder/head movement that I would describe as a “Yeah, pretty much” gesture.]
It’s just part of the job. And you know, I think, we’ve had Emerance come in at times and obviously Gwyneth stepped in today. And we’re so privileged in Ottawa to have these two high-caliber goaltenders that, every once in a while, you’ve got to tag ‘em out for half a second. It’s- you never worry about who’s going in and you never worry about the one you tagged out because they’re just fine as well. They’re pro. So certainly tonight Gwyneth went in there and closed the door for a while and gave us a good chance to try to dig out and Emerance did that for us earlier in the season as well. So I’m just really proud of both these women and how they elevate not only themselves, but maybe more importantly, one another. They’re a great duo. They build off each other, they empower one another to do well, and I think that’s a privilege for us here in Ottawa.
GWYNETH PHILIPS:
[nodding] Yeah.

Exactly.

Well, you always want your players healthy. It’s- every team in this league wants all their players healthy. And at the end of the day this league’s too intense and too physical for everyone to remain that way. It’s just part of this industry, unfortunately. You know, every team’s missing players; we’re no different. And so, you know, we’re trying to just get our rosters healthy as we can and get everyone back. We’re missing a couple players and at the end of the day we really still feel that we’ve got the depth to play anyone within our organization. And I think we saw that tonight. We saw some depth that rose and had some solid games. So we’ll get it going, but everyone wants to be healthy. It’s just part of the industry.
