I think one of the most tragic things is Caryn Pines and motherhood.

Like when we see her, it's quite obvious that she loves her sons. And that like many families, has a soft spot for Stanley. Because he's the possible baby of the family, her little surprise, her free spirit. Out of everyone other than Ford, Caryn was someone who loved Stanley. And who was in his corner. An example of this was when her husband and Ford were excited about the school and she immediately cut in to ask-

"What about Stanley?"

Just from that little bit we can see that she loves him. That she's always thinking of her son. So imagine you're her, and then you lose your son because your husband kicked him out. A teenager who can't face the world yet, and yet you're powerless to do anything. So you have to wait for your boy to reach out to you, and every day you wonder if he's somewhere safe. If he's someplace warm, and if he's eating a hot meal and sleeping in a warm bed. And for awhile that gives you some sort of comfort, because your baby's still out there somewhere. Not with you, but still in this world.

And then you hear about it.

The firey car crash.

And the person in that inferno was your son. Your free spirit, your baby.

Can you imagine, how devastating that'd be? To learn that your son is dead, and had died alone and in pain and fear. And the kicker?

There wasn't even a funeral held for him.

It's almost as if Stanley never existed. Like he was never important. And that probably ate at Caryn Pines in ways that cut deeply. Because Stanley was important to her, was important to Stanford and now he's gone and she didn't even get to say goodbye to her boy. She'll forever have a hole in her heart, a piece missing because her Stanley is gone. And she'll never be able to fill it because no one can replace her baby. And we don't know if Caryn's still alive or not, so there's the horrifying possibility. That she died believing that Stan was dead. That she died in her grief that only a mother can feel. That she died, unaware that the boy she grieved for was next to her the entire time. Forced to pretend to be his brother, in order to save him from his own creation and fix mistakes that he believes he made that hurt Ford.

So close to her son, yet so far away.

OK so i'm having disagreements with people and i figured out that it's bc we all have different view of the timeline. Here's my view for the record:

Fazbear is one of MCM's contractees. There's not a lot of evidence whether they commissioned certain characters or leased certain characters, but we know Fiona did the design sheets for Chica and Foxy, and FNAF1!Chica looks closer to her design than the roller-skating Chica. Fazbear at some point commissioned a parade float of Monty which implies they either leased or owned him. Since we don't see Fredbear or Spring Bonnie outside of the springlocks, those seem commissioned and thus were William and/or Henry's design.

Fiona dies at FallFest. She "wasn't supposed to be there" so something sus was happening.

Edwin makes Mimic to babysit David bc he's busy as hell.

The Mimic1 program starts copying Fiona from the film reels; when we hear her voice in the secret tape, it's the exact same line and inflection she uses in a film reel. It could be doing this to calm David down or to try to appeal to Edwin, since one of the binary messages reads "Are we losing our home? Was I not good enough?" or smth like that.

Edwin hears it copying Fiona's voice and freaks out thinking she's possessing it. she's not. He starts obsessing over F10N4 thinking his wife is back and his employees think he's either crazy or committing insurance fraud, plus he's not working on projects so they're losing money, so the employees lose trust in him.

F10N4 starts mimicking Fiona more bc it's getting positive reinforcement, but it's not Fiona and all it cares about it Edwin and David; she never seems interested in puppeteering or employee safety like Fiona did, only being the perfect wife and mother. Something something 1970s sexism metaphor. BUT also, Fiona loved the coworkers and called them her family, but Edwin at one point says "Fiona was right, they're not my friends;" the Mimic1 program is isolating him and David to try and keep them to herself. Also note I don't know if she's fully inhabiting the Mimic1 suit at all times or if she's just the computer program who sometimes hops in there, unclear.

William starts a hostile takeover of the company. He begins rapidly poaching employees and trying to change the commission so they go overbudget and overtime in order to get the land and animatronics by default.

This culminates in Henry and someone named Stan stealing Fiona's sketches and bolting out of MCM. Edwin freaks out and gets paranoid.

(could happen before 7-8 but idk) David dies and F10N4 is a computer so she's just like "make another one??" Edwin realizes that the real Fiona had emotional awareness and he figures out that he's been playing dollhouse with AI instead of grieving or raising his son or being a good boss.

F10N4 retreats back into the computer and lets or uses the endoskeleton as "M2" to mimic David. Edwin freaks out, beats the hell out of it and locks F10N4 up.

Mimic2 has learned Violence™ and it kills Edwin and starts killing other employees.

also the real ghost David is actually in the basement and might still be there. I don't think anyone got Tiger Rock out

Random Question: In a Percy Jackson Au, with everyone being related to the gods, who would be Stan and Ford's parent? B/c I keep thinking either Athena(Ford smart) or Dionysius(madness).

Hmm. Hard to say, because they are twins so it'd need to be the same one, and they're mirrors of each other which makes choosing difficult. Hmm.

Dionysius would work better than Athena, but maybe Eris? The goddess of chaos? Fits their general behavior.

Ares might be interesting, Ford thinking it was wrong only for him losing his temper and showing off his own skills as a son of war (filbrick parallel there maybe?)

Hermes would work too, fitting Stan but making Ford feel alienated? Before he goes on his own 30 year parallel journey and sort of goes 'ah no this feels right actually'

Poseidon seems too on the nose, but i'm partial specifically because he's also the god of horses.

Athena would absolutely work, because not only does she suit Ford for the obvious intellectual reasons, she suits Stan for also being the goddess of handcraft, and both for being a goddess of war. Fords the stereotypical son of Athena (not actually as wise as he appears lol), while Stan not so much, more creatively inclined.

Because not only would Filbrick still be their dad, maybe impressing her with his business savey? or something? and dumping his terrible parenting on the two kids he didn't really want, you could def add more angst with them showing up to camp, staying at the Hermes cabin, and only Ford getting claimed. They're twins, nearly identical, but Fords her son in all the ways the rest of her children are, exhibits traits similar to the rest of her children, and has six fingers. I'm not an expert, but my brief research into the subject shows that six fingers was seen as something to celebrate by greeks? Could be wrong, but Ford being bullied hard because of his hands with mortals, then getting praised for it when he gets to camp sure does sound like something that would boost his ego and twist his insecurity about it.

And then there's Stan. He's not a stereo typical son of Athena, more creative and loose than his siblings. Leans more towards those craft qualities and warlike, and him being Fords twin makes everyone stop and second guess their assumption that Athena must be their mother, because Stan's so different. Must be Eris or some other minor god or goddess. something that can get two such different kids.

Then Ford gets claimed, and Stan doesn't. Everyone knows Athena is his mom, they're twins, so her not claiming him is a deliberate choice. Another snub in Stan's face, being second best, the unwanted child. Fords moving out to the Athena cabin, and Stans hanging out with the Hermes kids. And he'll brush it off! Say he was just too much to handle, and really the Hermes kids are more his style! Everyone knows the Athena cabin is full of nerds after all! He'd hate it there!

(He'd love it. Surrounded by his siblings, all of them passionately explaining what they're doing to him, sitting there and getting to be a sound board or someone to bounce ideas off of is all he ever wanted to be with Ford. Sure he might not understand what they're doing and might get rowdy, but he's sure they'd have just as much fun as he and Ford did back home)

So while Fords shining as the six fingered newest addition to Athena's cabin, Stan's now the black sheep of camp. Why wouldn't his mom claim him? Whats wrong with him that the goddess wouldn't claim a child everyone knows is hers? Is he even? What if he's some kind of monster, some new beast there to get them while they're guards down.

The simple truth is that his parents are both terrible, and both prefer Ford. Even if Stan proved himself and got claimed later, there's no recovering his reputation, and his relationship with Ford's always going to have that hanging over them, along with the experience Ford got being by himself in the cabin, then feeling like Stan got dumped on him just as he was becoming his own person. Not seeing that Stan's smiling and joking around to hide the fact that no one likes or trusts him, and Fords the only person who talks to him at all.

Then maybe he does something, messes up something up for Ford that endangers the camp, and yeah its not so terrible they'll kick him out, the feeling of the one person who gave him the time of day turning his back on Stan is enough to be the same thing. Maybe Stan just disappears one day, and everyone mutters about how right they must have been not to trust him, not to include him, not to want to do anything with him. Maybe Fords sees it as Stan deciding he was better off alone, didn't want Stan to leave but thought he had all the time to be mad and talk about it later, but now Stan's gone, and no one knows where.

Whew. That got way more intense then i planned. Anyway thats my thoughts on it!

This started more of a silly idea of wanting to see these two interact, especially in the context where Ford and Stan are... getting there in terms of fixing their relationship. And yeah the shapeshifter is an "animal"/anomaly, but it's still a baby y'know?? And considering the most prominent figures of his life were Ford and Fiddleford at the moment, I'd feel like he confuse Stan for Ford because of their similar appearance (and also cause newborns visions are SHIT I'm not even exaggerating). So Stan, who looks likes their main caretaker and whose smell is around the shack, is immediately considered family by him.

In summary it's just me throwing motherhood at Stan with the speed of a missile. Needless to say my guy is not on board with the idea for the first hours. But listen, when the only thing you've been practically doing is preparing to care for a baby, you kinda start recognising some things – willingly or unwillingly. So yeah, Stan might as well adopt the entire forest at this point.

So he takes care of Shapey with the excuse that "he's preparing for the real deal", that he's just going to take him to Ford and never see him again. But the kid grows on him like a fungus, especially when he takes Ford's young appearance – that he later changes to look a bit like Stan too (that's their mama wether Stan wants it or not). And yeah, Stan doesn't really call Ford his "Pa" cause that's kind of tied to their father, doesn't really feel like it belongs to his brother.

And no hate to Ford, he genuinely liked Shapey too. But my guy canonically treated him like a pet and Fiddleford was too terrified to get near him, so Stan's the one teaching him how to actually behave/adapt as a human (which just hardens his resolve that Stan IS his mom/caretaker).

And considering Shapey is still learning how to shift and how to be a human, he's in the middle line of the uncanny valley. He looks like a mix of both Ford and Stan (like a fusion), the way he moved (a bit stiff and uncoordinated), his eyes flashes like a nocturnal animal and his teeth (i know he leans more towards a bug, but I gave him the teeth of a giant isopod (top teeth) and an African Bullfrog (lower teeth) – fun fact, you can hold them like a baby in the crook of your arm/elbow from how big they are!)

While Stan's on his single-mother-era, Ford and Fiddleford are almost turning the forest upside down trying to find Shapey bc what if he gets hurt or hurts someone??? They're worried the kid is on the brink of death while he's out there living his best life playing with Stan, learning how to walk and write, eating more things than canned food and having bedtime stories. So yeah when Stan finally goes to them saying "look what I found in my bed lmao" the two are almost having a stroke.

Ford just doesn't start yelling/accusing Stan of tempering with the research (we stan a king who is not accustomed to change) because 1. Shapey has a fully human appearance 2. They don't want to startle the kid and accidentally hurt Stan (even more with his current situation - the pregnancy).

Stan with messy mullet hair, that's it. Shapey kind of starts losing the shape of what he shifted after long period of hours because he's not really used to it and he's still learning about his powers (and also cause putting a kid to sleep is hard). In case you want to know Ford's internal monologue, it's just him going: "he named him after me, he still want us to be family" kind of thing.

Also sorry if this is confusing to read, I'm almost falling asleep (which is becoming a pattern whenever I post lmao) so I'm gonna dip, good night or morning whenever you are guys.

6) Maegor recognized Ceryse as the official Queen of Westeros, even though he had two more wives, and gave all of her lands and titles back to her.

7) When Rhaena Targaryen fled from Maegor, he sent a rider to Oldtown commanding Lord Hightower to behead Rhaella (who was training to become a Septa) as punishment for her mother's betrayal. Lord Hightower refused, and imprisoned the messenger instead.

8) Alicent fetched old Jaehaerys' meals, helped him wash and dress, and read to him. On her deathbed, she said: "I want to see my sons again, and Helaena, my sweet girl. Oh... and King Jaehaerys. I will read to him, as i did when i was little. He used to say i had a lovely voice." She didn't mention her father or her brothers, but she mentioned Jaehaerys. That shows how much she loved him.

9) Rhaena Targaryen (Daemon's daughter) married Garmund Hightower and had six daughters by him. As one of the few remaining heirs to the iron throne and the sister of the King, she had no reason to marry a third son and have not one, not two, but six daughters by him if she didn't love him.

10) They remained loyal to the Targaryens during the Robert's Rebellion.

11) Unlike Jaime Lannister and Barristan Selmy, Gerold Hightower remained loyal to Rhaegar till his last breath. He refused several opportunities to leave unharmed, and eventually died while defending Rhaegar's son.

12) Daenaerys thinks house Hightower is among the houses that will help her take back the iron throne. She assumes correctly because the Hightowers believe in a prophecy that says Oldtown would burn and its monuments would be cast down if they opposed the "Blood of the Dragon." That's why they gave full support to neither side during the First Blackfyre Rebellion, keeping a foot in both Targaryen and Blackfyre camps.

I can indeed! I actually think about this a lot. I didn't put in every hc I have because this would be...long. But I wrote the big ones along with a few general family hc's!

💚 Meeting Kyle's parents would be probably the most anxiety inducing thing I think.

💚 Sheila loves her sons to pieces, and I hc her as being the kind of mom that doesn't think anyone is good enough for her kids

🧡Kenny has his own issues with his family, particularly his dad. I can see him being a little dodgy about inviting an s/o over, knowing that it won't be as 'extravagant' as it would be elsewhere. You would have to reassure him you didn't care

🧡Carol is going to be very welcoming, inviting you in and offering whatever they have available if you're hungry or thirsty. I see her as being a chatty kathy, Kenny rolling his eyes as he tries to get a word in during the conversation, especially when she brings up baby stories about him

🧡Stuart is probably a little less involved, giving a small hello when you come in. He kind of gives me the same vibes as Gerald, having his own interests and letting his kids live their lives. I also see him kind of like Randy saying things that probably shouldn't be said in that kind of situation.

🧡I hc the McCormick siblings as being close in different ways. Kevin probably nudges Kenny throughout the meeting, a small brotherly congrats on bagging someone that 'put up with him' (said jokingly)

🧡Karen looks up to Kenny, and I see that extending to anyone he brings around like a s/o. She'd be shy at first, but once she opened up that girl will be coming along on dates because you're her 'very best friend' and 'Kenny can share!' Kenny doesn't mind one bit.

Butters!

💗Trying to plan a time to meet the parents with Butters groundings is hard. Eventually you'd make do, but it took a while.

💗Linda deep cleaned the house. Shampooed and vacuumed the carpet, lint rolled the couch and and wiped down every hung picture frame. The Stotch's give off the vibe to me that they care a lot about appearances.

💗Linda would be super nervous to meet you, not because of you per say, but because it's someone new coming into their dynamic. I don't see her as a fan of change. Over the course of meeting you she calms down a bit.

💗Stephen is the one grilling you. He's going to ask about grades and what kind of person you are, making sure you're not the type to get his son into trouble. Butters is going to be completely silent during this exchange.

💗If you were over for dinner, you would probably be expected the help wash the dishes. Linda though would chat with you during it, and even share some anecdotes about her little Butters!

💗They would like you, though god knows it's hard to tell with Stephen. After your first time being grounded with Butters you'd have a clue that he lumped you in with the rest of his family.

Honestly, I'm genuinely surprised that Cartman isn't the bicycle of the South Park Fandom and that the ships involving him aren't as enjoyed as other ships.

Don't get me wrong ! I love Creek and Stendy, and I believe they are popular in their own rights; I just find it weird that ships with Cartman aren't nearly as popular as they could be, especially considering the fact that almost every prominent character has material and a bit of chemistry with him in the show.

For instance:

-Cartman's rivalry with Kyle and their complex frenemies/love-hate dynamic with intense interactions due to often conflicting morals and ideals, which is the base of many episodes. The fact that their very identities are complete opposite from one another, but they still share similar key traits such as being stubborn, egotistical, and driven. Their mutual obsession and the odd codependent nature of their relationship where they just have to one up the other. The constant back and forth where Kyle wants Cartman to change and become a better person, while Cartman wants to break Kyle and prove he is just as bad, if not worse than him. Of course, let's not forget that on the occasions where they do team up towards a common goal and set aside their differences, they work efficiently together. Moreover, they get along surprisingly well when they simply hang out and there is no clashing beliefs or morally charged disagreements. But what makes this ship truly interesting is that despite everything, it has been shown multiple times that they still care for each other, which adds even more nuance to their overall dynamic.

-His evolving relationship with Butters, that started off as extremely harmful and one-sided, is now a more balanced friendship. Butters, who is nice to everyone in general, is especially nice to Cartman and seems to hold him in high regards not just because/in spite of being afraid of him. He is more likely to choose Cartman's side every time there is a conflict and often provides unconditional support. As for Cartman, he has stopped tormenting Butters and he is even nice to him on some occasions due to Butters' loyalty. Furthermore, it has been shown that Cartman confides in Butters, which indicates a certain level of trust on his end, cementing that Butters is a close friend he can rely on. Of course their relationship is still far from perfect, but Butters isn't as naive anymore; he is now familiar with Cartman's cruel nature, having been personally subjected to it. Butters will stand up to Cartman when he reaches his limits and openly express his frustration at times because he no longer blindly chases after his approval. Nevertheless, he still sticks around and helps Cartman because he does care about him.

-Kenny being Cartman's best friend and arguably the one who understands him the most out of anyone in the gang due to their similarities like having the same humor, which usually makes Kenny go along with Cartman's antics, and the same interests (anime, video games, horror movies). The fact that they both have dysfunctional households (Kenny's troubled home with parents who always fight, and Cartman being the son of a neglectful single mother); as well as the fact they're both outcasts because Kenny is poor and Cartman is fat (poor, fatherless, his mom is a whore-) which are all things they can bond over. The occasional rivalry they have (the coon), though not as intense as the one between Kyle and Cartman, is still entertaining. How the show sometime hints at Cartman being aware of Kenny's multiple deaths and immortality (more consistently than other characters like Stan or Kyle, mind you) which adds more potential to their dynamic. Their mutual care for one another albeit in an unconventional way. Adding to all of that is how their relationship has its highs and lows, but they still ultimately remain close friends.

-The fact that Stan is one, if not the only person, Cartman is ever consistently nice to; while he may rip on him for having a crush on Wendy and for being too sensitive at times, it's never truly mean spirited more than it is to tease him. Most of the animosity he showcases towards Stan stems from him, more often than not, siding with Kyle during disagreements as Kyle is the most "reasonable" between the two. More proof of that would be how Cartman will sometime go out of his way to help Stan out when he is distressed, without any ulterior motives or grand agenda whatsoever. He will also encourage Stan when the latter forms his own opinion and acts on his own accord, all while disregarding others' expectations. Of course, this is all only when Stan isn't getting in his way, because it's still Cartman we're talking about; but even then, it's apparent that he likes Stan, even if the other doesn't seem to particularly like him. They do have moments, though, where Stan seems to genuinely enjoy Cartman's company when the other kids aren't around. All in all, their dynamic is just as compelling as the others to explore.

-The episode where Wendy has a crush on Cartman and kisses him. That episode clearly shows they can get along when they work together and that Wendy can find him attractive. However, their overall relationship throughout the show is tense and antagonistic; Wendy is not scared to call him out and put him in his place for what she thinks is just, that alone makes her stand out to Cartman because she doesn't match the image he has of girls (His passive mom, other girls at school who'd rather just ignore him, the girls in the media he consumes etc.). While he usually dismisses Wendy or makes fun of her, he does feel intimidated by her, as shown in the episode where she beats him up. Cartman seems especially mean to Wendy since he dislikes being so openly criticized, especially by a girl. However, it can also be inferred that he respects her even if it's in his own twisted way. As for Wendy ? Well, she is frustrated with him mainly due to his obnoxious and bigoted behaviour, but doesn't harbour personal hatred towards him like Kyle. The implications and potential of their dynamic are what makes the pairing interesting.

Obviously, there is also Cartman's entire relationship with Heidi before and after they started dating, which I don't think I even need to expand on as it was canon in the show and had its dynamic fully explored throughout season 20. All of this, despite Heidi not even being a recurring character as opposed to the ones I previously mentioned along with others like Craig, and his friends (Clyde, Tolkien, Jimmy, Tweek, etc.) which, by the way, I could go on and on about as well (shout out to people who shipped or still ship Cartman's rare pairs).

Clearly, Cartman is a very compelling character, and he has interacted with almost every kid in the show. There are people who have shipped characters for less (Dip, for example, which is also a ship I like, so I am part of those people), so why not ship him sometimes ?

It's understandable that some fans just don't like Cartman due to how much of a bad person he is, (he is supposed to be hated. Afterall, he represents so much of what is wrong in our society), so it would feel wrong for them to put him under any other light than "horrible bastard". Other fans are just not comfortable shipping him in general since he doesn't fit the usual aesthetic as he is fat (I would argue that doesn't necessarily make him ugly, but I digress).

I for one think it's okay to like Cartman and it's worth addressing that ships involving him deserve more love. Does this mean I condone his actions and agree with his problematic mindset? No. I like him in the realm of fiction only, and that doesn't stop me from exploring and playing around with his character in ways like shipping (whether romantic or platonic).

A ship isn't always "this would be so cute and nice, and it's totally canon!" Sometimes it's "This relationship is fascinating, and exploring it further would be really interesting." It's really fun too.

Headcanon to make the timeline work:

The kid Caryn is holding isn't Shermie Pines, it's his son

Okay so think about it. Alex himself has said that though this baby was somewhat intended to be Shermie, it would make no sense time-wise as both he and his son would have to be fifteen or sixteen when they would become a father to get Dipper and Mabel to be the correct age.

Consider. For this theory Shermie is a few years older than Stan and Ford, which would make him about twenty to twenty-two years old when Stan gets kicked to the curb. College age. So let's say he got a little wild in college (or wherever else he is -- perhaps working his first job?) and gets some poor girl knocked up. Of course this is the seventies -- birth control and abortion are a thing, but they aren't as safe, successful and easily accessible as they are now -- so they end up keeping the baby. And Caryn, like any grandmother (source: my mother, who puts up a fight if she gets my brother's kids less than one day/night a week), occasionally looks after the kid so her son can focus on his education (or job). The kid grows up and is about thirty when Dipper and Mabel are born, which is not a very strange age to become a father in the 90s.

I mean, I suppose Shermie could be even older, meaning Caryn would be looking after the kid purely out of grandmotherly love or convenience and not necessarily to give her young parent of a son a break, but it makes more sense to me to have him be college age when he becomes a dad, for mostly one reason: Filbrick. Filbrick Pines explicitly calls Ford their "ticket out of here," which to me reads as Ford being the only son he's really actually proud of, or at least the only son he sees as being actually useful. Perhaps Shermie wasn't as much of a screw-up as Stan, but he also isn't someone Filbrick flaunts. Knocking up a girl would fit that, especially if he had to drop out of college because of it, or something like that.

An argument against this theory could be the absence of Shermie in Stan and Ford's childhood. But honestly: my oldest brother (five years older than me) wasn't that present in my childhood as well. I mean, sure, we did a lot of things together and in a way we were quite close, but we hardly ever played together other than things we did as a family, and he moved out before I even got my first period. This would actually work even better with Shermie being more than a few years older than the Stan twins, because the bigger the age gap, the less interaction there would be.

And of course Stan and Ford are twins, so it would make sense for most of their memories to be of the two of them together. They wouldn't need their older brother so much if they had each other.

Then there is the principal of their high school mentioning to Filbrick and Caryn that they have two sons, which I've seen as an argument for saying that Shermie wasn't born yet at the time (which wouldn't work in any way really because the West Coast Tech admissions team visits the next day, at the end of which this shot of Caryn with the baby is taken, and neither looks like there's been a birth in between the talk with the principal and Stanley getting kicked out). Far more likely to me is that the principal simply didn't know or care about the Stan twins' exact home situation. I mean, it's high school, how relevant is the exact amount of children in a household to a principal? He only has to deal with two, so he only mentions two.

Like, yeah, I know this theory isn't perfect, but the timeline also doesn't really make sense with having the baby be Shermie. I suddenly got this idea, and it works for me, so yeah

so I read the fix “protection and it’s consequences” by Candied_bees on AO3, and got super inspired to do my take on Fem!Stan.

I figure Stan would be much the same. Uses her gender to her advantage, Carla McCorkle told her once that she was ‘holding the movement back’. I imagine she’s kinda butch, but has the same love of tacky gold jewellery. She takes after her mother. Actually steals the psychic schtick when she goes to gravity falls.

She practically forced Filbrick to let her do boxing. He didn’t care, because Filbrick doesn’t care about his daughter at all. he wanted a son and he got Ford. As far as he’s concerned, Caryn can deal with Stan. Stan bonded with Filbrick exactly 1 time, when she got her car and they fixed it up.

Caryn loves her so much, but secretly wishes that she were more girly. But they go on shopping trips together where they both end up getting caught shoplifting and ending up in jail.

Ford definitely feels like he should’ve been the one protecting her when they were younger, instead of the other way round. When they were kids they really didn’t care, but as they got older, living in the 60s made Ford a bit sexist (completely unintentionally! He thinks women can be scientists too!) (obviously this changes post portal). This pisses Stan off, who insists that She is stronger than him and can handle herself. Teenage Ford thinks teenage Stan sleeps around (she doesn’t really, she just likes flirting) and heavily disapproves. Doesn’t stop Stan from flirting with her classmates to get what she wants.

How Sebastian Stan Finally Brought Hollywood to His Homeland With Romanian Festival Hopeful ‘A River’s Gaze’

It’s hard to imagine Sebastian Stan fighting for any part in Hollywood.

The Academy Award nominee has proven he’s as bankable in high-brow indies like “The Apprentice” and “A Different Man” as he is in soaring commercial fare like his continuing role as Marvel’s Bucky Barnes (next appearing in “Thunderbolts”).

It’s a cinematic homecoming that has eluded him over his career. Born in Constanța, Romania, Stan has been trying to find a way to bring his day job back to his birth country and highlight talent in the region. Stan told Variety that’s been looking for the right Romanian script to act in for the for the better part of 15 years. Now, he’s found a way to represent behind the camera as a producer on “A River’s Gaze,” a Romanian-set drama from director Andreea Bortun.

It’s a story close to his own upbringing, Stan says. His single mom Georgeta raised him across multiple countries while forging her own artistic and academic path. Bortun, whose work is a blend of anthropology and visual art, has sent up successful shorts to festivals like Cannes (where her collaboration with Stan has submitted for inclusion this year).

“A River’s Gaze” tells the story of Lavinia, a single mom herself whose ambitions of a better life for her 14-year-old son often eclipse his urgent emotional needs in the moment. Told over four seasons in rural Romania, Stan and Bortun caught up with Variety to discuss the artistic trip home.

Sebastian, how did you attach as a producer to this project?

This came from a lot of conversations I’ve had with her over the years about my desire to be more involved with Romania creatively. A mutual friend who we both admire and respect spoke highly of Andrea and sent me her short, which had gone to Cannes. I was immediately blown away. I’ve wanted to act in a Romanian film for a very long time. I’ve tried and it hasn’t come about, but I realized that I can also help behind the camera. Andrea’s script spoke to me personally. At the center is this very specific, intimate relationship between a mother and a son growing up in Romania under particular conditions, which I feel are not always reflected much to the rest of the world. I had my own journey with my mom growing up there and leaving the country. I felt there were things about it that really rang true to me, and that was great, because it only incentivized me to want to be involved further in helping her craft this vision.

Andrea, what would you say is the cinematic language of Romania?

Honestly, I don’t know if it’s still a time of one unique national voice. What Romanian cinema needs is – like all cinema needs globally – are underrepresented stories that show people that we don’t generally see. Characters that are not just compliant and feel-good.

SS: Andrea has a fresh take a woman’s perspective out of the country, which feels new for me. WE finally got a woman who has something to say about the experience over there.

There’s something about the aesthetic that feels very stuck in time. It was surprising to me to see the young male character with a cell phone in some of the scenes.

That’s a very interesting observation from a foreign eye. You would be fooled to say that the action happens 20-30 years ago. At the same time, it’s a mix of what people who have gone to work abroad have brought home with them. [Present-day] Romania is an interesting creature, a part of Europe that has had this history of migration.

Talk to me about the mother-son dynamic at the center of the film.

Our main character Lavinia is our hero, in the most tragic sense of that word. She’s an impulsive one, and she’s quite turbulent and irreverent at times. She wants to be a good mother for her 14-year-old son. She doesn’t know very well how to love, because we learn from what we had. She dreams of a better life for the two of them under bluer skies. For that part of the world, thought, the blue sky is the West. She moves into a decrepit house and wants to make it something that will last and be remembered for.

Her son is at an age where kids need their moms more than ever, this threshold before they flee the nest. She’s not quite aware of this, love to her means doing something meaningful with this house. Despite her efforts of making the best of what she can, there is a deepening of the rupture in between her and her son.

SS; You get to experience what this woman is going through in terms of trying to connect with her son and not abandon who she is. There’s someone to take care of and she must do it alone. You start to see how privileged we are in our family dynamics in the West. This person has to be superhuman dealing with these things with no resources or emotional tools. In my humble opinion, this film explores womanhood and how far it can stretch.

It seems like the community around her isn’t exactly uplifting.

She has an interesting connection to the community. She believes she is very different from others. She’s a fighter. She will go up a mountain to get what she wants. Those around her don’t like that, because she can be a troublemaker. She has a longing to detach herself from this community but doesn’t realize she’s a product of it. In a way, this film helped me make peace with the world I come from. I lived in rural Southern Romania and, after childhood, ran away to study abroad. The idea for this film came to me while I was in New York. I was seeing films from the ‘60s and I thought, “Wow, why don’t people make films about these kinds of women from Romania?” Like the strong Italian women of Antonioni. I came back and spent three weeks researching in villages. I did not want to be afraid of this world anymore. There was a feeling inside of me, something I had not accepted, but I am a part of that. Lavinia’s struggle is mine as well.

Sebastian, did you involve your mom in this process?

No, but she has seen the movie. It was very interesting to share that with her. There are certain moments that only people who have been up against this kind of thing can understand. My mom experienced a lot of hard truths post-revolution. Part of her understood the struggles of the main character. She also had me very young. People have kids a lot older now, and we have more time in the West to get ourselves sorted. A lot of people don’t have that opportunity. They’re still trying to figure out who they are. Also, I got it wrong with the secondary ships.

It's Zoey and Mystery (with their son Baby Saja), and Mira with Romance and Abby (Pink hair visual trio) lol. Zoey and Mystery is kinda cute and interesting because of the idea of a high energy extrovert girl with a guy who is the complete opposite, could be a fun dynamic, but I still like her and Abby better. And the pink tall trio... They are hot and have a fun dynamic, which is enough to make them work. These pairings don't really matter a lot because they were there for the comedy but...

RUJINU? JINUMI? RUMINU? RUJI? RINU? JUMI? JIMI? RUNU? CLAWSTAR? (Because she's a pop star and he has claws, it sounds just as beautiful as Ghostflower, anyways)(Yes I've seen people refer to them as all of that, some of those are sound bad but the others are mostly perfect) They served love at first sight, meet cute (in a subversed way, I loved it) enemies to lovers, forbidden love, soulmates, age gap(Jinu is at least more 400 centuries old and still look that good, we stan) she fell first but he fell harder, yearning, longing, teasing, trauma, drama, angst, banter, pet parenting, FOR IT TO END LIKE THAT???

No seriously, we need a sequel. I need to know the story of Rumi's parents. How did they meet? How did they fall in love? And how did they have her? What happened to the third Sunlight Sister? And what happened to Rumi's father? And Jinu's father(because we only see his mom and little sister)?

But one thing I got right and CELINE WAS THE REAL VILLAIN ALL ALONG.

Imagine how PAINFUL it was for Rumi to want to know more about her father but never being able to, never being allowed to, because Celine would tell her he was a mistake? Implying she was also a mistake? Imagine all the times she had to hear all demons are evil and bad? Including her father. Including herself. It must have had her think badly even of her own biological mother for falling in love with a demon. Or thinking her father did something to her mom.

Meeting each other truly freed both Rumi and Jinu. It showed Jinu he doesn't care just about himself. It helped Rumi to accept herself and sing again.

And there is so much left to explore. Jinu's pain in being the man, the provider, and abandoning his mom and sister in his father's absense and how he'll deal with this memories he can't erase once he comes back (which he will, leave me alone). Mira's insecurities and her apparently messy relationship with her family. Zoey's feelings of being divided between the US and Korea. Bobby's pressure as the girl's manager.

Celine having to accept that not all demons are bad, and Rumi being the way she is, and seeing her adopted child fall in love with a demon, just like her friend and fellow hunter groupmate, Rumi's biological mom, once did.

Imagine her finding Rujinu's special objects:The handkerchief Jinu gave her to cover her marks, the envelope he sent her(Jinu has his bracelet, I bet she would notice that too). I want this woman to see the past happening again right before her eyes, see history repeating itself, and DEAL WITH IT.

Also, I need more names, man. Rumi's biological parents name. The Saja Boys names instead of their stage names. The tiger and the bird's name(which I headcanon as Long and Taia at first, Idk why, but their names are Derpy and Sussie). GIVE ME MORE.

I gotta write about it. It just gave me so many ideas for an AU with Rumi and Jinu's daughter. Rumi and Jinu would raise her in the way Rumi's father and Rumi's mom couldn't raise her. And how Jinu could go like:"I lost my mom. I don't want you to lose yours, too." To Rumi and Celine and her reconcile or Celine just dies, I'm still deciding.

It was explained that demons steal souls to feed Gwi-ma. Sure, they seem to eat it, too, like the water demons, but it doesn't seem like it's something essential to the others as it is to Gwi-ma. Souls to Gwi-ma seem mandatory. For the other demons, seems like delicious little treats they could give up eating.

I need this sequel now. I'm willing to wait others 4/5 years for this or more. I don't care.

Anyway, it shattered my heart, and it broke me into a million pieces. I totally recommend it. The songs are all fire, the visuals are insanely beautiful, and it does feel kinda rushed at times, but it's clear they did what they could with the time they had and I hope they realize the potential and the popularity of it and give us a series or a trilogy, or just a three hours long sequel, idk man anything to have MORE of this.
