the gift box seemed to burn your palms as you climbed the stairs to jeon wonwoo's study, heart quickly climbing into your throat.

it was your boss's birthday today, and even though he was told by his brother and grandfather to take the day off, he wouldn't listen. today was just another normal nine to five for him, and you doubt he had even taken a step out of his massive penthouse office since he arrived.

your cheeks flushed as you approached the massive oak doors, smoothing down your pantsuit as you brought a shaky hand to the wood. thousands of thoughts ran through your mind, most of them having to do with the subjects of being reprimanded, ignored, or not taken seriously—all of which wonwoo has done to you before.

as wonwoo's "sunshine secretary" (as dubbed by some of his staff), you were considered the softer side to jeon wonwoo's rule of jeon enterprises. you always had a smile on your face no matter what you were doing, and people considered you to be a joy to be around, especially when you lessened the tense mood floating around because of wonwoo's strictness.

finally locking your thoughts away in the safe of your mind, you rap once, twice on the doors. the familiar velvet tone of wonwoo's voice beckons to you when he says "come in.", and you do so, taking one more sharp inhale as you pen the doors.

wonwoo is, indeed, sat behind his desk. in a neat black suit without wrinkle, wonwoo sits behind his massive monitor screen, agile fingers flying across the keyboard as he types what seems to be a project manuscript.

"good morning, mr. jeon." you finally decide to speak up to make your presence known, and wonwoo finally tears his eyes away from his work, gaze landing on you as his face becomes schooled into coldness.

he nods curtly, standing up and adjusting his glasses on his sharp features before approaching you. "good morning. i take it you slept well?"

"amazingly, sir." you bow out of respect, and he nods, eyeing you down without saying another word. you take this moment as a time to speak up.

"oh, um...happy birthday." you hold out the black gift box, and wonwoo's eyes widen a fraction, sharpness softening for a split second before he reels his racing thoughts back in.

wonwoo was enamored with you, he wouldn't lie.

ever since you came in for the position as his secretary, demanding you could do more than schedule appointments and run errands, wonwoo was enamored. you were the first person he'd even consider opening up to, and were the first for many other events wonwoo wouldn't even think to name.

"how did you know it was my birthday?" wonwoo's question is simple, yet his deep voice and tone still manages to send sparks along your skin. a blush rises to your face as you realize you didn't explain it earlier, and you quickly answer the question.

"your brother visited yesterday while you were handling the project design meeting. he...he dropped a gift off for you and told me it was for your birthday." you explain, gaging wonwoo's reaction. he blinks, face still for a minute before he graces your eyes with a small smile. the small smile you've only seen him give when proud of one of his employers. or the small smile he tries to hide when you mention your cat.

"i...i'll get his gift for you, of course, but..." you pause, unable to figure out how to word your next sentence without making it too awkward. "i wanted to give this to you first."

wonwoo stares down at the sheer black box as if its a bomb, and you feel your hands tremble nervously as he takes it from you, inspecting the top quietly before taking his massive hand and removing the top from it.

it's a silver watch, one that would match most of wonwoo's work suits. he remembers this specific one, as it being the one you had recommended him when you had first started working with him.

"thank you." wonwoo's throat bobs as he speaks, a light flush creeping up his neck and onto his face as he nods. "this means a lot to me."

that sentence alone makes your insides grow hot, and you bow out of respect, nodding. "i'm honored that you chose me, mr. jeon. t-to work for you, that is; this is just a small token of my thanks, along with the fact that it is your birthday."

you smile partially at the small smile wonwoo gives you, but let it drop as you realize your little speech felt more like a love confession than anything.

"it's the least i could do." wonwoo steps closer, dark, sharp eyes surveying yours before he takes your warm hand in his, leaning down to kiss it softly as his eyes shut.

you stand there, stunned out of words, hand and whole body on fire when wonwoo pulls away as if he didn't just shatter your psyche in a split second. he has a tint of pink to his cheeks from embarrassment, and he nods, cool facade slipping a little as he coughs.

"i'm—i'll return back to my work. you're dismissed for the day." wonwoo says with his back turned to you, and your eyes widen, confused and surprise mixing into one.

"but, sir, it's tuesday, and i—" wonwoo raises a hand, and you fall silent, watching his handsome face turn cold yet again as he turns around to face you. he still stands inches away from you now, so close that a few more steps could bring the two of you in for a kiss.

you're not sure if you'd be against that scenario or not at this moment in time.

"consider it as paid leave." wonwoo nods, and you don't see the need to argue with him, bowing lower to show respect as you smile. "thank you, mr. jeon."

"and, one more thing." wonwoo takes the few more steps you mentioned earlier, breath now fanning your lips as he stares into your eyes.

"call me wonwoo now. you've gotten past the formalities." wonwoo's tone is neutral as he speaks, noting the red tinting your cheeks as he bites back a soft smile. stepping away from you, wonwoo notices how you're shyly staring at the ground, making a mental note to himself to memorize how cute you look in this moment.

"thank you, mr—" you pause, correcting yourself as you smile. "thank you, wonwoo."

as you pivot on your feet and nearly jump your way out of wonwoo's study, he thanks whatever higher power there is in heaven for bring you to him as his secretary. and maybe, just maybe, even more one day.

(if jeon wonwoo, the cold and calculating ceo of jeon enterprises, can get the words out of his emotionally constipated mouth.)

Books of 2025: WANDERLUST: A History of Walking by Rebecca Solnit.

The last chapter in this book is titled "Las Vegas, or the Longest Distance Between Two Points," so I had to bring it on our Las Vegas/Grand Canyon trip, obviously. And I did indeed start it in Vegas!

However! We got back from Vegas *checks wristwatch* a month and two days ago, and I just finished it. It was a much denser, chewier book than anticipated. Parts of it were super neat! But parts of it moved at, say, two or three miles per hour. Lotta focus on Romanticism as early origins (which. isn't really my wheelhouse). A little bit of biology in there, a little bit of nature writing, some feminism, etc.--I think she does a good job of qualifying that this is a history of walking, per her subtitle, and it's very much Hers. I busted out the flaggies for a few passages, and I'll probably reread those, but I doubt I'll reread the Whole Thing.
