🎃 October status update

Alright! finished organizing all the commissions and on informing everyone of what place they got!

here's the commission progress tracker, now with this new batch included , the previous batch can still be seen also!

As a bit of a remainder, I put at the top the commissions with less characters involved and at the bottom the ones with more ( and if they have background), this way I start with relatively more simple requests and I work on the more complex ones as I progress.

The new batch is now is for the last 3 months, because even if finishing it on 2 months would be the ideal, there's still a possibility I take a little longer, but also because it's still quite a big batch lol

Originally I really wanted to finish these in one month and I wasn't going to open so many slots for the sketch page so I had November and December free. But I changed my mind for a couple of reasons, 😅 still I would like to have at least December very free, so I'll do my best to finish most of these before December is here ╰(￣ω￣ｏ)

🎃 August /September commissions

- As for the batch I got on August, I'm almost finished! there's one illustration commission to finish and technically 3 and a half sketch pages to finish, which I hope I can mostly complete this week so the next one I can start with the new batch!

I haven't decided yet when I'll be opening commissions again next year, I want to be able to use my portfolio next year so I'll have to think about it and plan things up for sure! ^^ though I have some ideas for maybe new commission types, but we'll see!

What did I think of the book?

Book Lovers by Emily Henry My rating: ⭐⭐ 2.5 of 5 stars I saw a snippet of this book on Tumblr and was really excited to read it. I love books, so a romance book called “Book Lovers” sounded like it had potential to be really sweet and wholesome. The book had some things going for it. I particularly enjoyed the back stories of the characters, setting descriptions, and the childhood memories of Nora with her mother. The humor is hit n’ miss, I found it quite crass for my taste considering the MC is meant to be a 30yr old career woman not a teen in a locker room, but it did sometimes get a laugh out of me so I can’t complain too much. Much of the main story, however, was lackluster and kinda boring. Many chapters suffered from “White Room Syndrome”, and that caused so much of the dialogue to drag, feeling more like a chore to read than anything for me. Scenes have a rinse and repeat set up, and were easily predictable before I even got to the half-way point of the book. The memory scenes didn’t suffer from this though, so I’m not sure what the deal is here with the rest of the story. There are a few spice scenes, but most of them felt out of place in the context of what was going on in the book. As for the characters, I found them to be down right annoying, and not all that interesting. Which is a shame because the memory scenes of the MCs were so rich, a total contrast compared to how they were depicted throughout the present moments of the book. I'm starting to get tired of reading about characters that have forced unnecessarily dramatic issues and traits to compensate for the lack of an interesting plot. The only character I came to like was Charlie, but even he grew to be irritating to read about at times. I will say though, the last 25% of the book was done pretty well imo. I enjoyed the ending, and the lead up to it had my heart squeezing with hope that the lovers would have their happy ending together. I just wish the rest of the book had been on the same level, but at least the ending made it somewhat worth it. The epilogue is probably the most uniquely written one I’ve read so far. It was a little confusing but creative, so bonus points there. What drew me to this book? The title, obviously. I love reading! I didn’t find the cover stood out to me much but that might just be because most romance books seem to have taken on the same copy-paste illustration style. Favorite character/s? None. Star rating: All in all, would I read this book again? Probably not. Do I regret reading this book? Yes and no. The ending saved this book for me, I’m glad I finished it, but it was a pain to get through, so 2.5/5 stars. View all my reviews

0041: Strange Tales #147

And Lo, A New Era Emergeth! The Old Order Changeth! After three years of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Doc gets his first change of creative team. Stan Lee hangs out for the first five pages of the new story. Denny O'Neil takes over for the back half. Our new illustrator is Sub-Mariner creator Bill Everett. The clash of styles with Ditko is... interesting. As a bonus, Wong finally returns!

Doc goes domestic! After a long time chasing baddies across the infinite dimensions, Doc makes a trip to the corner drug store. This is one of the first times we see Doc interact with the "normies." He's still got his head in other dimensions because he's still dressed in his tights and tunic. He changed his cloak for another cloak that is the tiniest bit less conspicuous, at least. The thought balloons of all the hepcats around him demonstrate Stan Lee's attempt to emulate contemporary idioms. It's not really successful.

Doc needs some aspirin and 24-hour cold capsules and is shocked to find out that his account is past due! Uh, oh! On top of all his other troubles, Doc is skint! He takes a look around him and realizes he's overdressed for the occasion and casts a spell to make him appear more Brooks Brothers and less Tibetan sorcerer. We don't see the reaction of the other customers as his clothes appear to change all by themselves. Is this because Everett didn't want to draw it or because a pair of robbers conveniently hold of the place at that moment.

"I got this!" thinks Doc, please at the well-timed distraction. After some clever word play that's more natural than most of the other dialog going on in this story, Doc makes our unfortunate criminals think they're experiencing mystic agita.

Everett makes a great effort to emulate Ditko's crazy other world-ness, but he's really just lifting elements of prior art. Appropriating Ditko will get more blatant in a few pages. Returning the robbers to their real senses, they immediately confess to a police officer who conveniently stopped by the drug store. Lots of coincidences and were only on page three.

Heading back home, we are reintroduced to Wong, whom Doc immediately berates for endangering his credit rating.

Wait a minute! Doc rents his Sanctum Sanctorum?! I know things were different nearly 60 years ago, but is a landlord really about to allow a tenant to make the incredible extensive renovations that a mystic headquarters requires? To make matters worse, building inspectors show up and cite him for lots of violations.

Woah! The Sanctum has moldy trap doors and hidden passageways! I'm sure all the flaming braziers and smoking cauldrons lying all over the place don't really help his case. Whatever, this place sounds cooler by the panel! Wong is worried about the costs, but Doc has other things in mind. "Wong, grab some treasure from the vault that we've never mentioned before and hawk 'em at the flea market!"

With the money situation temporarily averted, Doc thinks "Study time! Where did I put that Book of the Vishanti? But just a minute, I need to make sure Baron Mordo is still on ice." Doc goes up to his magic ball that is nearly named correctly as The Crystal of Agamotto. Doc spies on Mordo sitting in a funky chair, but no where near as fine as a Ditko designed one. Mordo detects him, pounds on a funky door and rants a bit. Doc takes the bait and shows up. Mordo initiates a minor skirmish which Doc quickly averts and returns to his Sanctum. "That was depressing, time to change the channel! What's that silver haired temptress, Clea up to?"

Doc basks in him memories and Denny O'Neil and Bill Everett use the opportunity to cut and paste a bunch of panels from issue #127 and the last issue. For some reason, they recolored Doc's cloak red in the earlier tale and drew some horns on it. I really don't know why they have such an issue acknowledging that Doc had a different cloak a while ago. This goes on for about two and half pages until Doc attempts to find out Eternity's fate. We get a glimpse of a faint image of Eternity in the crystal, but the cosmic entity's fate remains unknown for now.

Turning to more mundane matters Doc ponders "How can I earn some much needed scratch? I know, I'll call that theatrical agent!" This leads only to disappointment as the agent says "Nah, no body's interested in that stuff anymore." As the Doc starts to ponder other get rich quick schemes someone pops into his Sanctum. Yup! Still no security.

Yes, our mysterious stranger is none other than The Ancient One who's freaking out about someone we've never heard about named Kaluu. Who is Kaluu? He's apparently someone who's really, really powerful, and he just stole the Book of the Vishanti from under Doc's and the Ancient One's noses. (I need to think of a clever nickname for TAO.) Anything else about him will need to wait for next issue. Save that 12¢ now, kids!

Oh crap! Now what? We'll just watch this scary pair of eyes until something else happens.

So how does Doc fare under a new team? The results are mixed. The new team attempts to show the domestic side of Doc's life. What we find out is he doesn't mesh well with the general public. This may be the result of years of general isolation. But he was a physician with patients for years before that. Yes, he was an arrogant prick, but it shouldn't be at this level of awkwardness. Doc's absentmindedness wrecks havoc with this domestic life. This will haunt him for quite awhile and in 15 years, he'll hire a business manager. Wong may know how to attend the sorcerer supreme, but he's not an accountant. Wong is presented here in a better light than in pervious stories. I guess Ditko thought of him more as furniture than a character. Stan Lee doesn't have him speak in pidgin English, but his speech is filled with East Asian clichés. The Ancient One seems off too. Ditko built up a man who's hundreds of years old with the accompanying wisdom. Ditko's Ancient One certainly had a sense of urgency, but would never have been this frazzled and frantic. We'll have to see where things go.

Mini Reviews for July's Reads

Black Ghost of Empire by Kris Manjapra - 5 stars

A look at slavery and the emancipation processes across North America and the Caribbean in particular, as well as some of the colonization of Africa itself. Examines the way emancipations prioritized compensating slave-owners for lost "property" rather than restoring justice and reciprocity to the enslaved people who lost their labor, lives, and histories. Super informative, super vital, because they didn't teach this in US history. Just be prepared for an emotionally tough read.

The Veiled Throne by Ken Liu (The Dandelion Dynasty #3) - 3 stars

This is where the series finally ran into pacing issues for me, as many multi-POV epic fantasy series do. Mostly in the latter half. We had a very high-stakes storyline getting a slim chapter between multiple thick chapters about an all new setting and characters with a much lighter tone. I know heavy stuff needs to be broken up, but this was more frustrating than cathartic.

I am keeping in mind that TVT is technically the first half of what was supposed to be the final book, but the trilogy became a tetralogy because a 2000-page book would be ludicrous. Still, I feel it could've been broken down further, and we really need to allow more BIPOC writers the freedom to have sweeping, several-book-long series the way white authors can.

Get In Trouble by Kelly Link - 4 stars

These stories were quite a ride. Many featured messy people, places, and things. If we're being honest, the rating could bump up to 5 stars on a reread. There's just so much to unpack, and I'd need a closer reading, like studying scripture.

Current August Reads

• Trans-Galactic Bike Ride ed. by Lydia Rogue - As the subtitle reads, it's "Feminist Bicycle Science Fiction Stories of Transgender and Nonbinary Adventurers," written by queer authors. Technically I've actually already finished reading it, but I'll post about it separately at a later time!

• Babel by R.F. Kuang - BookTube's darling about a department at Oxford dedicated to translation and working silver- and translation-based magic for the glory of the empire. Problem is, some of the students and faculty are people from places on the receiving end of the empire's injustice. Down to the last 100 pages of this one!

• Speaking Bones by Ken Liu (The Dandelion Dynasty #4) - Despite my frustrations with the third book's pacing, I wouldn't dream of DNFing the series. The world is so lush and full, and the characters endearing. But there's another 1000 pages ahead, so this'll be on Current Reads lists for a while. 💀

• Lone Women by Victor LaValle - A young woman leaves her family home in flames and seeks a new life homesteading in Montana, a mysterious trunk in tow. I read LaValle's The Ballad of Black Tom a few years back, and really needed to read more of his stuff.

• Moonshot: The Indigenous Comics Collection Vol. 1 ed. by Hope Nicholson - Was very excited to see this at the library, as I've wanted to read it for a long time. The stories vary in genre, and I believe there are illustrated stories, individual art pieces, and even a song or poem by Buffy Sainte-Marie in addition to regular comics.

Recent Acquisitions

• Loot by Tania James - I actually won this print copy in a Goodreads giveaway! This is why I encourage those who are able to enter for anything they're interested in; it can happen to YOU lmao. Anyways, it's a book about a boy in India who constructs an automaton tiger for the Sultan, only to have it seized in war by the British. He goes to England to try to retrieve it.

• Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas - My August Book of the Month pick. I enjoyed her debut, The Hacienda, and look forward to this one. Described with "Vampires and vaqueros face off on the Texas-Mexico border." I've seen reviewers describe it more as magial realism/historical fiction with vampires, rather than horror, though.

Upcoming Releases

No guarantee I'll pick these up... but here's some cool stuff coming out in the next month or so!

• From A Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi (August 29th) - Third collection of 40 short stories celebrating the 40th anniversary of Star Wars, this time inspired by elements of Return of the Jedi! I realized I still have to pick up the second collection, from The Empire Strikes Back, oh no!

• The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White (September 5th) - YA horror featuring a trans autistic teen protagonist who can commune with the dead. He attempts to escape an arranged marriage, is sent to a Sanitorium & Finishing School, and is urged by the institution's ghosts to expose its dark secrets.

Static Has Some New Hardware | COMIC BOOK REVIEW

What's up, everyone! Tré from Advent Seven here, and I'm back with another review from DC’s Milestone Returns. This time we’re talking about the first issue of Hardware: Season One and the third issue of Static: Season One.

Hardware: Season One #1 is written by Brandon Thomas with art by Denys Cowan, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Chris Sotomayor. Static: Season One #3 is written by Vita Ayala with art by Chriscross and Nikolas Draper-Ivey. Hardware was released on August 10th, 2021. Static was released on August 31st, 2021. Both are available in both digital and print.

The following section contains spoilers for Static and Hardware

Hardware: Season One #1 is titled “Angry Black Man”. Hardware’s story starts with a short flashback showing a 3-year-old Curtis Metcalf at his first protest. It’s one of his happiest memories because he was with his father, but it's also a memory that he goes back to whenever another injustice happens. In the present, Dr. Metcalf is preparing for the inevitable arrival of the police.

In case you forgot, Dr. Curtis Metcalf is a brilliant scientist. He is being accused of causing "the Big Bang" by former boss and mentor Edwin Alva. Metcalf is not surprised it turned out this way, but he's not going quietly. The proceeding event is a bombastic demonstration of Hardware's power suit. With the aid of Metcalf's AI, P.O.P, Hardware blows up his lab, takes flight, and is chased by two military-grade helicopters. He’s able to take down one helicopter, but another damages his jetpack causing him to crash.

At Alva Industries, Edwin Alva speaks to the police. It's difficult for Alva to believe that Curtis could be responsible for the horrors of "the Big Bang". Alva recounts to himself how he discovered Curtis at a science fair. Alva recognized Curtis’s potential and invested heavily in Curtis’s future. According to Alva, Curtis had become entitled, wanting more. When Alva denied him, Curtis used "the Big Bang" as the perfect opportunity to ruin Alva and his company.

Hardware awakens after his crash. He’s a little sore, but he immediately focuses on taking down the helicopters. He does this by throwing a flaming knife at one, causing it to explode. Hardware then flies to Alva Industries to confront Alva. Alva condescends to Curtis like he's a disobedient child. Alva claims that Curtis would be nothing without him. Curtis responds by shattering the window in front of Alva. Hardware could have easily ended this here and now, but he decides Alva needs to suffer first. Hardware flies away, declaring, "We'll see who made who."

Hardware is not the style of character or story that I enjoy. He’s almost a Punisher archetype. He is someone who is out for justified revenge, and anyone who gets in his way is probably going to die.

The paneling is a little hard to follow during the first helicopter encounter. The coloring uses a lot of grays with bursts of orange explosions. An interesting detail throughout the story is that it is raining at night. It gives everything a somber, yet intense feel, which is a plus in my book.

It’s amazing to have one of the co-founders of Milestone Comics, Denys Cowan, return to do the penciling for this series. We are also treated to the “caged canary” allegory from the original Hardware comic. I rate this issue: 7/10.

Static: Season One #3 is titled “Run It Back”. This issue begins with Virgil about to be arrested. Using his wits and powers, Virgil manages to escape with a bag full of goodies from Mr. Metcalf's lab. We're also treated to a Static staple, him flying on a manhole cover.

When Virgil gets home, he goes through the bag hoping whatever was inside would be useful. To Virgil's excitement, there was enough gear in the bag to put together a complete superhero outfit. We also learn that Virgil was an anime fan when he was younger. He even learned to sew, so he could make costumes for himself and his friends.

After finishing his costume, Virgil decided it was time to clear the air with his dad. They have a real heart-to-heart while fixing the roof. The good feelings keep coming. Ritchie and Daisy show up to help repaint, apologize, and eat some home cooking.

Sadly, the good times can’t last. The next day, government agents arrive at the school. They are here to find potential Bang Babies. Unfortunately, the agents have someone with them that can point out the targets, Hotstreak.

Static: Season One continues to be one of my favorite stories to read. However, this issue takes a small step back. Nikolas Draper-Ivey only illustrated the first half of the comic. Pages 13-20 were drawn by Chriscross and Will Quintana. Their art is not bad by any means, but the art change proves that Nikolas’s skills have given Static new life.

Static’s new costume is solid. It takes elements from previous Static costumes, including the OG Malcolm X hat. I also love that it takes inspiration from Power Rangers/ Super Sentai. I rate this issue: 8.5/10

The next issue of Static is due to be released in October. Icon & Rocket #2 is already available, and #3 will be available on September 28th. Hardware #2 will also be available on September 28th.

PC Troubles + Going on Vacation

Ever had the moment where you're working on projects and your PC decided it was time to kick the bucket? That happened to me this summer. 😅 Fair warning, it might be a slight vent, but it's also an update with what's going on behind the scenes with my work, life, and me.

💻 Tech Troubles and I 💻

During the month of July and while participating in Art Fight, my old PC had completely shut down on me with a dead CPU. It was old and instead of buying new parts, I decided to search the internet for a whole new pc to suit my needs for comics, illustration, writing and more.

Finally at the beginning week of August I got my new PC and set it up for use (starting with giving July rewards right away to Patrons!). However, my new PC is giving me troubles too and I just bought it. Within the first two - three weeks of August I had to run my PC, figure out what was the cause for all the critical error crashes and make a list of the possibilities of the source, eventually I came to the conclusion to contact the PC company's tech support for help... which I still haven't got an email back for. 😒

In the meantime, I've been doing small doodles for mutual artists and friends to make sure how long would it take before my PC crashes again and so far, so good, but I'm not confident enough with bigger illustrations and comic pages yet.

What does that mean for August rewards?

I will be doing a simple chibi illustration of The Elements of Luna's Kristal Lunestia with a luna moth named "Lunette" that I sketched traditionally and will ink & color digitally and it will be available on the first two weeks of September. We'll see how many times the computer will crash by then, but hopefully none before I go back to that concept/painting for 10 Secrets of Atlantis. 🙏

I still want to contact the tech support and I might have to send another email to them, but I'll have to do that much later. Luckily the warranty for this issue lasts for a year, so I have time when I come back home. Which brings me to...

🌞 I'm Going on Vacation 🌞

For the first time I'm actually traveling for vacation to visit my family and friends during the 3 week trip! I will be bringing with me comic pages to work on sketching Chapter 4 of The Elements of Luna.

I am so excited to finally reach to that half-way point of the comic that once everything is scanned, everything else can be done digitally and continue on to Chapters 5, 6, and 7 sketching. That way I can ink and color Chapters 3 and 4 digitally while sketching the next to be ahead of time.

I am only one person working on this, but I hope it'll be something you guys can enjoy as much as I did creating Volume 1 when it's done and published. 🌙
