Para este trabajo del autorretrato digital hice varios gifs animados que se presentan cada uno en una pantalla diferente a modo de instalación. Cada uno de estos gifs busca representar el estilo de los artistas que más me han influenciado pero estando yo en su estilo, entonces por un lado tenemos el gif hecho para la pantalla del teléfono que representa la parte de la música, en este podemos encontrar a tres grupos que han sido claves a la hora de inspirarme, darme motivación y que siempre con sus videos y sus estéticas me han servido como referentes mayores siendo estos: Linkin Park (que esta representado con una versión de su disco Living Things pero en la que se supone que salgo yo), Evanescence (con su disco origin) y Garbage con su disco Not Your Kind Of People. Por otro lado, tenemos el televisor, y en esta se encuentran dos series animadas que han influido en mi no solo a nivel artístico, pero más personal, estas siendo Un show Mas, de JG Quintel, y South Park de Trey Parker y Matt Stone. En la pantalla de la Switch se encuentran autorretratos en el estilo de Super Paper Mario y Pokemon HeartGold y SoulSilver. Por último, en la pantalla del computador se encuentra el único autorretrato que podríamos decir que es mas propio, aunque este, esta bastante influenciado por trabajos de Apollinaire, se trata de un autorretrato en el que salgo yo hecho con el código binario.

 Quise hacer este trabajo así porque considero que las grandes influencias en un artista hacen gran parte de el no solo a nivel profesional pero también personal. En este caso quise rendirle tributo a algunas de todas las influencias que he tenido a lo largo de mi trayectoria.

Flowing fluids shape the social life of gut microbes

04.07.23 - A groundbreaking study reveals that the flow of fluids influences the spatial organization of bacterial communities that inhabit our intestines, revealing an overlooked factor potentially mediating our microbiome and gut health. Our gut is home to a diverse community of bacteria known as the gut microbiota. These bacteria play a crucial role in our health by supporting digestion, producing essential nutrients, maintaining a balanced immune system and even affecting our mood and behavior. Understanding the factors that shape gut microbiota composition is crucial, as disruptions in this delicate balance have been associated with various health conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and metabolic disorders. In a new study, scientists led by Alex Persat at EPFL’s School of Life Sciences now provides new insights into how the physical forces of flowing fluids in our gut shape bacterial communities. Working with the lab of Tom Battin at EPFL’s School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and colleagues at ETH Zurich, the work provides insights into the intricate mechanisms by which different bacterial species of the microbiota interact with one another by sharing nutrients. Wanting to understand the role of fluid flow in shaping interactions between gut bacteria species, the researchers investigated two common gut bacteria known to be beneficial to gut health as representatives: Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and Bacteroides fragilis. The team looked at how the two species share nutrients when exposed to dextran, a common food additive. They grew the bacterial communities in a microfluidic device under anaerobic conditions, which simulated the intestinal environment in the lab. Under these conditions, the bacterial communities grew in the form of multicellular communities called biofilms, where nutrient sharing impacts the position of different species relative to one another. The researchers then visualized the populations with high-resolution microscopy, and for the first time, were able to understand the physical principles guiding the organization of microbiota communities. The study showed that the flow of fluids within the gut influences how these bacteria interact and exchange beneficial by-products of dextran metabolism, forming biofilms attached to the inner surface of the intestine. In addition, the exchange of these public goods also shapes the spatial distribution of the community. “Fluid flows that resemble the ones these bacterial species experience in the human colon strongly impact the spatial organization and composition of syntrophic communities via distribution of public goods,” says Jeremy Wong, the study’s first author. The study also found that the strength of the flow also impacts the formation of biofilm by the B. fragilis bacteria: When the flow was too strong, the concentration of beneficial by-products at the surface decreased, limiting the growth of B. fragilis biofilms. This suggests that physical factors can impact the overall composition and stability of gut bacteria communities. The research highlights the importance of considering not only the chemistry but also the physical forces at play in shaping gut bacteria communities. This additional perspective could unlock novel approaches of promoting a healthy gut microbiome and prevent or even treat diseases that arise from problems among bacterial communities. After having sat in PhD and iPHD interviews for the last few weeks one piece of advice to all students…..

1. Always look up websites for the institute and labs of interest when attending interviews. Does help to know what your interests align with and it’s rather easy to do.

2. If you pick a topic as being of direct interest to you, do make sure that you have read about it. It’s a great start off point provided you have read about the topic and can respond to basic queries about said topic.

3. Sometimes in a query the journey is the destination.

Make sure you share how you are thinking about a question. You don’t need to always arrive at an answer for the thought process to be right. Make sure the panel sees your thought process.

4. Being unsure about what you want to work on for a PhD isn’t a bad thing. It’s good to know that you don’t know.

So dont be compelled to say that you know what you want to do for the next 5-10 years.

If you do know, that’s fine as well.

5. If you are not comfortable speaking in English and would prefer to respond in Hindi instead, don’t hesitate to say so. Most, if not all panels, will be fine with this. We have done many interviews in Hindi and some partly in Bengali too.
