Soft Reboot
I think I need a soft reboot on this blog. I haven't been feeling the drive to write here for a moment and I think it's partially tied to my ideas for what I want this blog to be changing. If anyone wants their muse's relationship with Eath, Hax, and Grimbright to remain please let me know, otherwise I'm retconing or altering the following:
Hax doesn't have Taygete anymore, the person I used to write with who muse was the other parent presently (as far as I'm aware) is no longer writing on tumblr and I simply don't have the muse for her / an unsure how to develop her further. I might bring her back later as more of a different character, but for now Taygete has been removed from the blog.
Hax has not entered their inner demon form, the scar on their face will be removed to reflect this. It's a plot point I'd like to redo eventually.
The above two in mind, Hax's mother and father never came to visit. They'd have no interest if there wasn't a grandchild that she could try to manipulate. This means, unfortunately, both Hax's parents are still alive.
Eath also did not enter her (half) inner demon form. Not much has come of that event to need this to have happened.
Eath & Hax's cabin is once again hidden. Unless they have explicitly in character taken a muse to the cabin, it's nearly unreachable.
Eath is going to go back to not knowing how her powers work / that her powers are related to Souls and not just the Dead and Dying.
Eath, Hax, and Grimbright are going to be using their human disguises more. They live in a world where daemon are seen as myth, where the history they learned growing up was that humans hunted them out of their own world into the mirror one. So showing themselves as daemons to other humans is a high risk that they're not willing to take unless they're in another muse's world / realm.
Things that I am keeping / adding / changing slightly:
Any of the Seasonal Balls, all those can be more or less canon to the blog
Hax did lose their arm, and it was Grim who did it. That was an important moment of character development, and was foreshadowed too much for me to retcon. Hax's bracelet didn't activate due to the inner demon though, instead it was a constant signal Hax had to find ways to disrupt that got too frequent & difficult to do- which is when Grim decided to intervene.
Grim was possessed, and did receive help from other muses (w/o Eath) to regain control and have their old master ousted... but it's more unclear if that malicious spirit is still around or not.
Duchess Agares did still try to kill Eath, but did reveal she was Eath's grandma afterwards. They very rarely talk however for Eath's safety.
Eath works at the Hilbrook Library now (volunteers, really), and Hax works at a local Cafe so they can have money for groceries and other things Eath's garden can't provide.
Grim still takes assassination contracts, but if asked what he does he'll claim he has a work from home office job. He also still does have the official protection contract with Vassago.
I've already stated this but daemon lifespans have been updated so that every 10 years = 1 year for a daemon. This will alter timelines for past events for the daemons (Hax's late wife, how long Eath's been in the human realm, etc)
Please give me some time to implement changes (I need to make new icons for the daemons to account for a few things / Using human forms more)
I'm also going to be adding / updating a Verse page so that there are actually more versions of the muses to interact with instead of just the one verse.
#⚜️ || ooc / ealinia#💚 || psa#🔷 || the wanderess#💛 || the guardian#🖤 || ever watchful shade#{ i'm not automatically removing muse relationship btw but I'd like to know if you want to keep anything specific please!}

Sonic Movie Universe prediction: Robotnik is an orphan because of GUN
I think what was supposed to be, tonally, a silly throwaway line is actually winding up to punch us in the face later.
Bear with me.
I barely remember the first movie since it was so long since I watched it, but aside from one, maybe two, of the comic universes, this line is the first time we have ever gotten anything at all about Ivo Robotnik's personal backstory. And it's that he's an orphan. In a story series that explicitly sets him up with a human identity- none of that Eggman stuff as his identity, not even a whisper of the name until it's a silly insult Sonic throws out later- this movie bothers to give him a Normal Human Society Firstname Lastname and a job.
(Okay, so Robotnik isn't exactly a normal human surname. But it's established canon that is the family name so. Suspension of disbelief.)
A series that we know will later delve, at least a little, into the story of Professor Gerald Robotnik WHO IVO APPARENTLY, ACTUALLY, DEFINITELY KNEW IN THIS CONTINUITY, AS HE HAS A SPECIFIC GRANDPA NAME FOR HIM AND NEARLY CRIES.
The original line was a ridiculous rebuttal to Tom during the fight in the house during the first movie. "Rub that in my orphan face," he says in response to Tom sharing a detail of his childhood during Silly Action Scene Banter. While there is a sort of tension there since the movie universe makes no bones about Sonic being an actual child and he is confirmed to be an alien, thus making the danger present of government capture and experimentation very real and kind of horrific, the scene as it plays out isn't overly out of character for something you'd expect in a Sonic movie. And although Robotnik is the threat here, he plays a large part in also keeping the scene lighthearted because of how utterly he fails to respond like a normal human being to literally anything. The comment about being an orphan at least makes sense based on what Tom said, but it's still weirdly personal and, therefore, kind of inappropriate to say. Like dude back up you're trying to kill a child why are you sharing your trauma with me that's uncomfortable.
Which brings me to the obvious point of that line- it's not just to make the scene funny, it's to show us how set apart from other humans Robotnik is. This is a man who has no idea how to interact with anyone, like, absolutely nobody, and every single scene he's in reminds us of this, including this one.
Now that the third movie has explicitly drawn a line between Shadow's backstory and themes of pain and loss, and we see Gerald Robotnik weeping over what I think is Maria's body in the aftermath of the murder (jesus that's dark) I have to connect a few dots of my own.
The first movie had another piece of foreshadowing they threw at us, this one way more obvious: at the end of the first movie, a government agent is sent to speak with the Wachowski couple. He tells them that Ivo Robotnik has been thoroughly erased from existence. As far as any documentation of him ever existing on Planet Earth, there is none. He hasn't merely disappeared- it's like he never was.
If they did this to Ivo after this catastrophe it's not a stretch to think they did the same with Professor Gerald. Hell, I thought that after movie number one. "That has to come up later- we have a character the government explicitly turns on in this series. Like, as a major plot point. The defining moment in several characters' stories. No way does their ability to erase someone not come up later."
But now I think they went a step further.
They've already murdered a little girl and broken an old man in their efforts to contain the genius they were frightened of.
Personally, I don't think it's a stretch to think that Ivo Robotnik, very young himself at the time most likely, is an orphan because GUN decided to eradicate the entire family line in an effort to prevent anyone like Gerald Robotnik from ever existing again.
Except. The son survived. Well shit. Uh. Stick him in an orphanage and keep an eye on him, I guess.
And where does he end up as a adult? A branch of the government. Where they can keep an eye on him.
(More than that, if they did erase Gerald, Ivo clearly remembers him... so Ivo may have joined them specifically to look for traces of the grandfather he knows existed and who doesn't seem to have any records proving that whatsoever. But that's Ivo's motivations and we're talking about GUN's, so, moving on.)
It's likely based on his sheer intellect, assuming Ivo wasn't embellishing too heavily, that he didn't have to grow for very long before that brilliance was obvious. Though the government's decision to let him live was strategic, weighing the gamble of assassination with the gamble of him inheriting the genius and deciding that risking him having the same genius as his grandfather was better than trying to kill him at this point, the gambit ultimately failed. Even though he was more than likely still only a child, they'd let him live too long. In just a few short years he quickly became a very real threat to the government- as in, if given a reason, he could be a very real threat. And nothing Ivo does is ever subtle or quiet, so his genius was probably very loud, and there was likely lots of attention, making an assassination impossible, because if there would be too many questions before, there would be an insurmountable amount if he died or disappeared now.
So, since they couldn't kill him, they continued to keep an eye on him and took him on at the government when he was old enough with the intention of keeping their enemies closer. Except all of their caution still wasn't enough and he went rogue the first time he was presented with the opportunity to grab at power they didn't already have, power capable of things beyond their wildest imaginations- a monster of their own making.
Ivo, who never asked for what happened to him, very likely a victim of circumstances he had no hope of ever controlling, who responded to this trauma by making his choice that power mattered more than anything- more than morals, more than hurting people who are just like he was once. That shaping his own world after all the horrors he planned to do in pursuit of that may finally, finally "be enough."
(Be enough for what, exactly, Ivo. You never did explain that. "Who knows? Maybe that will be enough." Elaborate.)
Whether he knew the truth about why he had suffered or not, Robotnik made his choices. He stood at that crossroads that demanded he make a choice about what kind of person he was going to be in the face of all the pain and loss, and he made his choice. This movie is about Shadow making his.
If this movie really wants to beat us all to death it won't just draw comparisons between Sonic and Shadow, but Shadow and Ivo Robotnik.
(If this movie wants to exorcize our souls after we're dead, if it intends to be a trilogy and not make more movies in following the original vision for Sonic Adventure 2, it'll place Ivo at a new crossroads, and this time, he'll make a different choice.)
(Especially since Professor Gerald, in a much worse state of madness and malice than Ivo, who the movie is setting up specifically as someone Ivo loves, admires, and almost certainly misses, probably won't.)
#sonic the hedgehog#sonic the hedgehog 3#shadow the hedgehog#ivo robotnik#robotnik#sonic movie universe#personally i doubt they'll end the series here since it makes so much money#and given the quality of writing so far and the amount of source material i actually WOULD trust them with that decision#but if they DO decide to end it here...#rehabilitating ivo after drawing that comparison between him and shadow would be a helluva way to do it#especially since there's no way gerald however he actually exists in this world will make the better choice#it's like explicitly a plot point that he doesn't#unless homeboy played pokemon violet and went WHAT A FANTASTIC IDEA#and it's this android copy or clone who goes wait this is insane and evil actually and tries to stop it#then there won't be any intervention from the gerald we see in the trailer to stop the coming apocalypse#because like... he explicitly wants it- there's no iconic final battle scene without that#there is no meeting of the minds between all the other involved living characters without that crisis joining them together#and it's precisely that crisis + other shit i expect will happen to him in the movie that might make ivo decide to change his life#keyword there is MIGHT again we'll see#if they want more movies then rehabilitating him now is a poor choice so TIME TO STRAP IN AND WAIT

thinking about xiao shuai laying everything out to suo wei about how he no longer cares about yue yue and wants chi cheng and he doesn't deny it this time. we're at the point where he's actually starting to accept the truth
#i hope this means more jealousy fuelled plots to ruin cc and yue yue's relationship#but also i need to see wsw verbally tell cc not to go to yue yue or at least admit to him that he doesn't like that#because i need to know what cc's response would be if he explicitly told him to not go to her at some point#revenged love

if i'm being honest i actually don't believe the georgebertha divorce will happen because i don't think julian fellowes has the guts to go through with it.
#a georgebertha divorce would fundamentally change the show. and julian doesn't do that shit.#he literally only does it if forced at gunpoint. example: killing off sybil and matthew because dan and jessica wanted to leave#this is the same reason why i couldn't take the van rhijns losing all their money plot line seriously#he isn't brave enough.#i think they'll probably fight most of the season and then reconcile at the end.#the closest they will come to a divorce is either george considering drawing up papers#OR bertha telling george that there are rumors about them divorcing#either one has george crash out and kiss her. and then they're fine.#HASHTAG TRUST.#i also think with the amount of focus the press releases / teasers have done on a divorce plot line...#idk it'd be kinda stupid to just. announce one of the major arcs of your season so explicitly ?? does that make sense#like aren't we supposed to watch and find out. if every article is telling me they're divorcing what's the point of watching.#the gilded age#ace.txt

Noticing that TV and film will often have a character either have had an abortion in the past that isn't showcased on screen (and just used as part of the character's ~fucked up and twisted backstory~) OR contemplate getting an abortion in the present day but not to through with it. Just once I want to see someone delete that fetus within the events of the plot and not be like. Extremely majorly punished for it and/or be in the wrong
#ramblings of a lunatic#was watching a tv show w the fam recently and it's the 2nd series of a show that was clearly written with only 1 in mind#so in the 2nd season a character gets pregnant (bc ofc) and contemplates getting an abortion#only to do the whole 'omg she thinks she's lost the baby and realizes she wanted to keep it all along!'#which like. fine and valid and happens to ppl irl I'm sure#but like. this season doesn't establish if she wanted kids prior or if she has a stable job (she was struggling career wise-#-last season and the timeskip this season doesn't go into it)#AND has this fucking bizarre scene w/ her boyfriend (whos mostly been irrelevant and occasionally annoying up til now)#where he says it's 'our pregnancy' that she was going to terminate and when she (rightfully) bites back-#-saying 'you mean MY pregnancy?!' he just. storms off and deflects#which would be one thing but we have to wrap up the main plot so she just apologizes to him (for other plot stuff)#and we're never given any indication that his opinion has changed and they're just happily parenting at the end of the season#which just. left a bad taste in my mouth#like I KNOW i know not every bad thing said on screen needs a big blinking arrow that points out that it's Bad and Wrong#but idk how I'm supposed to feel in a series that has painted itself as explicitly feminist up til this point#presents the outcome of a woman dating and bearing a child for a man w seemingly zero respect for her bodily autonomy as happily ever after#w no follow up#like the whole series is centered on a group of sisters and this pregnancy story happened to the youngest one#who's always seen as needing to 'grow up' in season 1. so assuming this is meant to be building off that arc it's so WEIRD still#bc yes being a parent is an opportunity for many ppl to mature emotionally but that's not really something the character-#-reflects on all season. it's more abt her burying her past relationship w a season 1 guy (who was infinitely more interesting than new guy)#-than anything to do with that#AND EVEN IF IT WAS the notion of pregnancy as a punishment/reckoning meant to make her grow up or take responsibility-#-which is secretly a blessing in disguise i. god the show fell apart so hard here for me#and my mom and sister were just cooing over the baby at the end and i didn't speak up bc i didn't want to be a bitch#and in all fairness I'm probably being a tad uncharitable in this post but like. don't piss me OFF man#anyway. normalise abortion storylines that aren't backstory fodder and aren't fakeouts for baby plots. please

me while in the middle of writing like 4 other things: what if. soundwave/reader/jazz fic. what then.
#im pandering to myself specifically#velwy.txt#im having Silly Ideas#but first! everything else i guess.#BUT ALSO.............#rpf (robot person fanfiction) writer reader who gets menaced by their muse/s irl after theyr a little too accurate with how they write abt-#-autobot/decepticon plans and one of the two decides to Question them while the reader is having the best/worst day ever because-#-wow!! big robot!!! but also *YOU WERE WRITING ABT THIS GUY LIKE 10 MIN AGO WYDM HES OUTSIDE UR DOOR*#rpf writers worst nightmare/biggest dream... the person in question reading ur fanfic#this should really go in the main post but im shyyyy#anyway i stand by my statement that there should be more poly reader content#not reverse harem (still good!!) but like. the love interests also have Stuff going on as well.#IF ITS A LARGER POLY IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE TO BE THEYR ALL DATING EACH OTHER. THERE CAN BE DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS#im just rambling at this point anyway i jist think itd be funny#esp. if they encouraged the fanfic writing like no its great for public image actually.#anyway this is really funny to conceptualise to me but also nightmsrish to imagine in real life. i would die#actually even funnier would be if there ends up with no romance imo#but i think if i were writing explicitly platonic fic id have a different plot

just finished season 2 of arcane :(
#myevilposts#arcane#spoilers for season 1 below and some mild spoilers for season 2.#personally i liked how jayvik turned out. pretty much all of the main women got the short end of the stick though huh.#like i'm really glad mel is a playable character now and i really love her but uhh.#i don't know if i really like what they're leaving up in the air about her going back to noxus like that?#and the caitvi was like yeah :) until i was like oh this just reads as sequel bait.#to the show that said this is the end.#like are they really going to continue this story elsewhere? because caitvi and mel's arcs both didn't feel finished.#and despite the fact that i feel like they were hinting at jinx's fate the entire season it still didn't feel earned or even#all that climactic. like comparing it against what happened with like silco it just doesn't work that well.#also the amount of silco in this season felt so weird. like i love the guy and i wish i could say that i wish he didn't die.#but his death was thematically and narratively resonant enough that i think it kinda mattered and the show wouldn't be the same without it.#HOWEVER. with the amount he is still featured in season 2 i feel like maybe they felt like they weren't totally finished with him#(which like. fair.) and that maybe they regretted killing him off because of how great he is.#like they gave him a monologue to express this kinda weird imagined closure to his ambitions that he didn't actually get to#see. and i guess that makes sense because jinx did become that closure that she would imagine silco changing.#i could be cynical and say they just killed silco off so they wouldn't have to deal with him trying to make zaun a better place#so they could keep a status quo in place.#but *spoilers* jinx actually does somewhat topple that status quo and we end the season with zaun and piltover#being on some of the most equal footing we've ever seen. but it still kinda feels that way.#and one these season 2 character deaths (the one i mentioned before that felt unearned) just has like. none of that#going for it. like. okay. it mattered in that one scene as an act of martyrdom/to parallel another act of martyrdom in s2#to prove this character is totally totally unselfish now but i think this character already repeatedly showed that this season and like.#didn't need to die like that. i felt like it was kinda for shock value because OMG MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH !#and i think to be like 'but sometimes people just die irl so why wouldn't a show reflect that / it's realistic'#as if up until this point pretty much every major character death has had HUGE plot implications.#like why would they cry realism. now.#but i did like how jayvik turned out. the show could've and should've handled disability/ableism vs class privilege better#and made it a more overt theme because it is prevalent but doesn't get touched on explicitly nearly enough.

Prompt: Couples will evidently begin to mimic their better half after some time. What traits do you steal from him, and vice versa? Fandom: Twisted Wonderland Characters: Everyone - because I want to and I’m amidst fleshing out all my Yuu/Character dynamics + designs Format: Headcannons. Masterlist: LinkedUP Parts: Heartslabyul | Savanaclaw | Octavinelle | Scarabia | Pomefiore | Ignihyde (Here) | Diasomnia (Here) A/N: HUZZAH YET ANOTHER SERIES FINALLY COMPLETE
Habits You Steal:
Heels (Developed): Malleus is quite tall. No, scratch that. He towers over everyone. The horns give him an added height that really sells the deal. Unless you want to crane your neck back and develop a hump? It's wise to start wearing heels.
Prose (Inherited): Malleus. We love his little riddles and mysterious aura . He obviously read the wrong script and came straight out of an early 2000s YA novel named 'Evermore' or something akin. Yet he quite literally cannot get to the point sometimes. It’s a Diasomnia thing for sure but he’s the worst of the litter. It's infuriating. On one hand, your vocabulary has vastly improved. If only he could rub off on Grim, Professor Trein would be ecstatic. The problem is that sometimes you lapse into an 18th century sonnet, and your friends give maximum shit for it. Especially Ace. No mercy.
“Apologies everyone, it’s now past twilight hour and both the prefect and I need to conclude our evening agenda. Please excuse our absence and continue to delight in the night’s festivities.”-> Dear god Malleus - just say you’re going to walk them home and that you’ll see everyone in the morning. The misunderstandings that come from using big words is worse than sounding improper.
Sleeping on your side (Developed): Malleus requires a special pillow to sleep and it's one of those long ones that is positioned center of the bed. Most nights he rests like the dead, flat on his back so his horns don't tear the cloth. Laying on his side is a challenge, but he also wants to be touching you. It's one of those scenarios where once someone who's touch starved gets a taste, they can't go back. So most nights you'll sleep on one side (doesn't matter which) with either your head on his chest or your arms wrapped around one of his. Oh yeah - you get to keep one of those fancy pillows in Ramshackle. It's stored in a spare room but grim steals it quite a bit since the quality is high. The nights Malleus isn't around, you'll wake up with Grim smothered in your arms instead. Guess the whole 'can't go back' thing doesn't apply ONLY to Malleus here.
Luck (Inherited?): Fae blessings are a thing - we have confirmation within a 'discussion' during the main plot. I won't say when to avoid spoilers. Point is, the partner of Malleus Draconia most definitely has fae favorability cast upon them. You could make a HEFTY deal with Azul if he ever found out, so maybe keep the knowledge in your back pocket for a rainy day. Maybe offer to sit by him during a game of poker? Haha, no. You're actually 100% unaware. Only other fae can sense a blessing, and Lilia isn't a snitch. Expect your luck to turn around. Perhaps not entirely, but enough for the grey hairs to stop sprouting prematurely. It's difficult for other fae and supernatural to sense who placed a blessing, but they can recognize raw power. There is only one person on campus with enough magical potency to cast such a powerful charm. All thy need is two brain cells to connect the dots (some do lack this, unfortunately). You won't be sucked into any messes such as the Ghost Bride, etc. anymore, at the very least.
"Hm? I've little to no involvement with the others in my dorm, dearest. Yet, is it not a good happenstance that they treat you with the upmost respect? Do other dorms behave so uncouth that you are wary of proper manners? Diasomnia would welcome you, all you need do is ask." <- It is technically not a lie? He's not explicitly making anyone behave a certain way, but surely the strong aura acts as a deterrent for anyone with bad intentions. It just so happens that most fae-born students reside in Diasomnia. Not that he'd take kindly to any of his acting like anything but proper gentlemen towards you. This includes Sebek, by the way. The tonal whiplash with this one is insane the moment he recognizes Malleus' magic.
Gargoyles (Inherited): There is not much to say on this topic. Malleus is the sole member of Gargoyle Studies, and while he won't force you to join? It would make him very happy. You will become accustomed to travel and find comfort in desolate places. The dewy chill in deep ruins, nature's overgrowth from time's passing - certainly Malleus revisits places he once knew held life, and have been left to deteriorate. You can't truly feel the heavy nostalgia as Malleus can, but the appreciation is still shared.
"I once deeply enjoyed the solitude of ruins. The weathering of time somehow captured in architecture. Trapped in place as the world continued to live on. Yet I now find more joy in sharing them with you, rather than basking in their atmosphere alone. It perplexes me, and yet I find no problem with it." -> Malleus discovered the happiness that comes from simply being near someone you love. He just...doesn't realize it yet? It's a difficult feeling to characterize in words. Different than with his family, certainly. The entire point of going to a ruin was to enjoy the abandoned atmosphere. Malleus cares for his family yet there is a divide. Unspoken, and unable to be crossed. His world turns while he remains at a stand still. Yet whenever he discovers a new ruin, he couldn't find that tranquility he used to. Enjoying it alone is almost unthinkable - harrowing. He can't without you, or else it feels lacking. Even if you sit together in silence, he'd be happy. He just wants you there, your reactions, your company - it brings life back to the emptiness. Leaving the place more harmonious than he found it, coating it with pleasant memories for future visits. Hopefully ones where he is not alone.
Habits He Steals:
Artistry (Developed): Malleus has plenty of time to develop skills. The resources as well. He's fearful that one day your memory will become just that - a memory. One where he cannot picture your face in his mind. Where he's the only one left who recalls your existence. Be it because you pass on, or decide to leave him prematurely and return 'home'. Even if he firmly believes that there is nowhere more 'home' for you than in Twisted Wonderland. Regardless, he doesn't trust others enough. He needs to capture your likeness on his own. With his hands rather than magic - even if using magic to do so is child's play. He does not tell anyone of this budding desire or disquiet in his heart. Not even Lilia, who's likeness is forever immortalized in textbooks. The unspoken implications are too much for Malleus to confront.
People Watching (Inherited): It’s a work-in-progress, getting Malleus to see people as…well, ‘people’ and not subjects or those he’s obligated to protect. To cure his social awkwardness, there’s a need to get him ‘loosey-goosey’ and in touch with improv. What better way than to people watch? Except you don’t just sit there with him to observe. Malleus is thrown for a loop when you start making up backstories for everyone - based on their clothes, what they might be doing, or whatever else. None of it’s true. The ideas are all super embellished and with characterization holes…but it’s fun, and it gets him to think about how specific a person’s life can become, whether they live a lengthy life or not. Something utterly pointless to do, suddenly becomes one of Malleus’ favorite pass times.
Earth Slang (Inherited): It's a give and trade scenario. He improves your vocabulary, while you do Lilia proud by being the newest gremlin on Malleus' shoulder. Rather than teaching him Twisted Wonderland slang, it's much more entertaining for him to learn Earth lingo. Which is different. It's our metaphors, legends, and phrases like 'it's raining cats and dogs'. You're going to talk in SpongeBob quotes to him and he's going to believe it's philosophical. How novel, indeed. He gets to learn more about you as a person, and you get to have a bit of fun while also fostering a language shared only amongst the two of you? Like a secret code that friends have, or lovers? Huhu. It's not hard to crack at all but still fun.
"Hm? An 'updog'? Is this another saying or legend from your world? No, I have never heard of an 'updog' anywhere in Briar Valley. What is an 'updog'? A terror of some kind?" <- Heh.
Domestic Tasks (Inherited): Be still Sebek's heart, because bro might need to be resuscitated. Malleus wants to help you. Except he's found a situation where there isn't anything he can offer? Sure, he can offer coin and trinkets. Anyone can. It also is not his place to insert himself and solve your problems. You're an independent human and he isn't foolish enough to overstep that. So? Acts of service, even if said acts are 'beneath' him. This revolves back to him simply enjoying your presence, no matter what. Since you come with him to enjoy hobbies, it's only fair he does the same. Now he doesn't fully believe that you 'like' cleaning, but it's what you do most. So he'll help hang the sheets outside and then cast wind magic so they dry faster. He'll set up security charms outside Ramshackle, and enchant the paint brushes to freshen up your fence while you both share a pot of tea on the porch. You seem happy, and even a tad amused. So he'll relinquish some pride. If only for you to smile.
“Do all without magic need to take such…’extreme’ measures to clean windows? Please do not perch on the sill like this when I am not near. Else allow me this task, a simple water spell is far more proficient and safe” -> Man catches you ONE TIME, leaning out one of the second story windows to clean the outside glass and his heart skips a beat. Not that you wouldn’t make a lovely gargoyle on the roof, but spare him. He cannot fathom why one of the ghost residents can’t do it in your stead, but Malleus much prefers your feet planted on firm flooring (who’s going to tell him about all the holes and weak floorboards in Ramshackle?)
Nicknames (Developed): Malleus ceases calling you 'Child of Man'. There are many other children of men. It just so happens to be his default when you met. You are more. Much more. Which is why you cannot be his 'Child of Man'. Malleus actually takes to calling you your name more often than not. Names are meaningful, after all. Yet he dubs you 'Mooncalf' as well.
“Mooncalves are beautiful creatures that inspire. A name given to ‘those who dream’. That is what you do, is it not? Dream, and bring novel ideas that spark life in others.”
Strength (Developed): This is quite difficult. Controlling his strength when touching another is like trying to crack an eggshell with a power-saw. Yet the more you are together, the more he desires to touch you. So he has to learn. Since if he ever injured you, Malleus would never forgive himself. Often he hovers near, guiding you yet never making direct contact. His palm hovering near the small of your back as you walk, or taking extreme care when holding your arm. He's broken more teapots than you can count, and it takes months to share a bed. The fear of hitting you in his sleep caused insomnia for days...just, goodness. Don't even start on his tail. That thing has a mind of it's own.
"Fascinating...Hm?. No, no. I am by no means upset. Quite the contrary. Could I trouble you to humor my curiosity with examples? Oho, this is a wonderful evening indeed." <- Malleus showcases one of his pointed smiles - chin grasped between thumb and index as he listens intently to his juniors go in great detail about how you've begun to resemble him. The one other students will shy away from, but little do they know just how genuinely overjoyed he is. At first they showed mild distaste for the Ramshackle Prefect daring to go after someone like Malleus Draconia, yet all know better than to admit such a thing to his face. Else pity the fool. Yet nothing could dour his mood, their formal report reading like a lovestory in his mind. It is not that he is 'naive' to your mannerisms. You are always changing - as are many - and he would not dare to make any assumptions. Yet if others are noting these subtle changes as well? Malleus is...overwhelmed. Joy, appreciation, humor, and a bit unsettled if one asked for full honesty. If you are admiring him, including him in your person, as much as he is to you? It's an intimate commitment that comes once in a lifetime for his kind. He needs to think, but for now he will enjoy the 'implications' as much as he can.
Habits you steal:
Light Feet (Inherited): The king of jump-scares, ladies and gentlemen. Lilia is quite the cheeky fellow. He wades through corridors, skulking around like a bat on the walls. Both body and humor seem to ascend to new heights with this one - who without a moment's hesitation will drag you into his schemes. You may not be able to float, but that is no excuse to clomp about like an oaf! No, my doves, the greatest joys in life come from a good thrill. Others learn to keep a keen eye out for this bat's lover, as you slink about and appear at the most random moments.
"Oho!....my, my - your stealth is improving by the day. Don't get too cocky now, else I'll be forced to show you how a professional jump-scare is done!" <- Leona KingScholar himself has threatened to stick a bell collar on you, those from Savanaclaw taking a step back as you begin to resemble the more worrisome Diasomnia residents by the day. Dropping from treetops and banisters aplenty, the trickster ghosts at Ramshackle love their new fourth (and fifth, counting the ancient bat who haunts the halls just as much as they do).
Impish Glint (Inherited): Kehehehe~ it's physically impossible not to mimic that mischief laden smile of Lilia's! It's not as intimidating without the fangs and blood-red eyes, yet still oh-so charming. Why, the bat himself finds it positively adorable. It's one thing to have others call him cute - he now gets to witness the effect first-hand. The fact others can point your resemblance to him is just an added bonus. All you're missing now is the pink streak in your hair...can he? It would make such a lovely memory!
"Well aren't you just the most fetching gremlin this world has ever seen. Come along dear, I want to stir some youthful envy!"
Nose Picking (Inherited): Just kidding lol.
Historical Info-Dumping (Developed): One can only be corrected so many times before learning a topic inside-and-out. History lessons are a breeze with a personal dictionary at your disposal. Lilia is happy to help, but get ready for long stories with his bias weaved in-between. He never outright lies though, and it's a fine evening to sit with him by firelight and talk the night away over junk food. Treat it like hearing the story of an elder veteran. Except Lila has hundreds of stories to tell. There will come a day where your knowledge abut Twisted Wonderland extends far beyond what you ever knew of Earth - and you are the person people come to for notes. Even the studious Riddle Rosehearts trusts your word-of-mouth as much as his precious texts (only for history though, fair warning).
Speed Dial Takeout (Developed): This one is self-explanatory. Lilia's curiosity in the kitchen isn't something you want to deter him from. Let bro live his life, so long as it doesn't lead to the end of yours. It took months to find the TWST equivalent of speed-dial Chinese, yet a slip to Azul along with some recipes was enough to get the ol' ball and chain rolling. The food already exists, but you just had to plant some ideas to make sure that 3am last-second-craving availability was indeed an option.
"Don't look so glum now - once the oven is fixed I'll whip up a batch of Silver's favorite Mushroom Bisque! Ah - there's no need to cry. Now where did I put those takeout menus...." <- Now it's just Lils, Silver, and yourself chilling out at midnight with some egg rolls and moo-goo-gai pan after the fourth oven's been blown up in the past year. Thank Seven Malleus worked a plan with Azul set up a chain in Briar Valley, else y'all would starved.
Briaran (Inherited) : Briar Valley is indeed a land of tradition. You don’t need to learn their language to converse with fae. Most people in TWST are Bilingual - knowing common tongue and that of their homeland. Plus there are spells to help. Very few speak the ancient dialect from hundreds of years ago, which dwindled out after the war between man and fae with the ushering of a new generation. You already speak common tongue, but as for Lilia? Fluent in multiple languages. Ancient Briaran being one he slips in from time to time. You will undoubtably pick up many phrases of Briaran. Especially when he converses with Malleus, Silver, and on occasion Sebek. The third still a beginner to his personal chagrin. It’s like being a child in an immigrant household where your elders talk in their native tongue when they don’t want you to understand the conversation, so as a kid you gradually put together meanings through context. Y’know, as they go in between languages.
"I hadn't thought it possible to fall fall deeper in love - yet as always, you continue to surprise me." <- Lilia never asked you to learn, but nothing makes him melt faster than seeing you pick it up. You’re listening to him. He won’t ever jest over this, no matter how tempting, afraid it might deter you. He adores the way you mumble words under your breath, even if they’re mispronounced. He will only interfere if you ask, and be more than willing to teach. Ask him.
Habits He Steals:
Walking (Developed): Aside from when he's cheeky and looking to have some fun? Lilia will not float near you. He prefers to walk, feet firm on the ground, his hand in yours and enjoy the sweet serenity. There isn't a need to rush. Not anymore. Strolls with Malleus are a commonly discussed subject, but with Lilia? It's less like a sonnet in steps and more akin to walking the streets on a cold, winter night. Plenty of laughter as your linked arms swing between. Somehow slowing your steps on purpose, drawing out the time shared. Even if your lungs hurt a bit and joints are stiff. You don't have to. He could easily zip you both wherever need be, but the journey is part of the fun. He's gone his entire life at differing paces - and now Lilia is happy to match his final gait alongside yours.
Repeating Others (Developed): This goes hand-in-hand with you learning Briaran. Without prompting, Lilia will often repeat things his sons just said in common tongue. Sometimes dropping context clues so you can piece things easier. Not in a way that makes it obvious for you (sparing your feelings), but definitely noticeable to others in the Valley. It's an unspoken understanding not to ask 'why' he repeats himself two maybe three times tops.
"...eh? Scuzele mele. Ne vom întâlni în trei ore pentru antrenament. Da. Pentru practică. Asigurați-vă că nu vă zăboviți, altfel veți rata antrenamentul! - why that face, Sebek? Careful or your muscles will freeze like that khee hee!" <- Does it come unnatural? Maybe, but two out of three of his conversation partners can usually pick up when you're struggling to understand something. Sebek fails, but wouldn't dare question Lilia's speech and risk offending him. Translation: "My apologies. We'll meet in three hours for practice. Yes. For practice. Make sure you don't linger, or you'll miss practice!"
Intimacy (Inherited): Lilia is cheeky with most, but not touchy-feely. Not in the way that matters. He becomes clingy. It's odd being with someone actively seeking to be at his side all the time...and yet he does not mind. Which is unheard of for the loner - he spent 700 years of solo trips, wouldn't change a single one (okay, maybe a few. He could do without some scars), but the taste of a couple's vacation? A couple's intimacy? Romanic candle-lit dinners atop the castle ramparts, legs dangling over the edge as mindless talk comes and goes. Hiking through mountains hand-in-hand. Running raids online, shouting at each other from the next room? Sipping mimosas on a cruise ship - picking out souvenirs for your family an tasting cuisine. Even if it's places he's been before...with you? It's all new.
""You know...it was quite cruel of you to leave me behind. When? On that little journey to Fleur City, of course! Be it ten years ago or not - I understood at the time that it was a decision out of your hands, and yet you hadn't brought me any souvenirs...the hurt lingers to this very day and can only be healed through another vacation, won't you be my guide this time around?"
Normalcy (Developed): Lilia actively pushes the cute bit with others. Many portray his character as two sides of one coin: Lilia the General, and Lilia the Cheeky Prankster. What you get to see is...just Lilia. Not even Lilia The Father - because even with his kids, he has a part to play. Has to set a good example. Is it corny to say that he doesn't have to act cute for you, because he trusts you'll adore him? Isn't that what love is? To truly release your guard around him and not stress? It's like how on earth we all have our work mode, family mode, public mode, and then...well, us. The person we are when in a quiet room, alone, and simply being. That is the Lilia you, and only you, get to see. Lilia wouldn't get involved with someone that couldn't bring this side out of him. The one jamming out to metal while pretzeled on the ground, sifting through his wardrobe and eating burnt crisps out of a bag with chopsticks.
Time (Developed): In his last hundred years of life, with his magic dwindling, Lilia casts a glamour that lets him physically age with you. Not technically a habit, but also something he would never have spared the energy on without you as a deciding factor. Time comes for us all. He’d rather not emphasize this to his sons more than necessary…but they’ll watch you age. In an odd way, this is Lilia’s greatest ode to you. To them. To himself. You won’t have to age alone, watching him in a standstill as he’s been the past 700 years. This is his final thrilling experience, his final adventure- to grey and feel time in his blood beyond magic.
"You are as lovely as the day we first met, dear...surely I'm just as cute too, no?" <- No matter how quick you reply, he still is the same cheeky lil shit at 780 as he was at 700. Only with one heavy case of arthritis.
Nicknames (Developed): Lilia calls you ‘Dove’ for reasons best derived on your own rather than my telling. He will also be an ass and use teasing ones like 'shnookums' and 'poppet', but dove is for the softer times. On very rare occasions he will say ‘inima mea’ which is Romanian for My Heart, also known as Briaran in the world of TWST.
"Why, thank you! Kee hee hee, is it so obvious that I adore my little dove beyond comprehension? I've finally found my 'partner-in-crime' as you kids say, and my days have not been this lively in many years. Humor the musings of this old-timer, enjoy the blessings life offers while they are within your grasp." == Those who have lived as long as Lilia in Briar Valley are witnesses to his personality change. The general from hundreds of years ago is not the same bat flying about. He's a prime example for fae and humans alike that time changes us all - and so he doesn't mind popping in to humor gossiping soldiers. If anything, he hopes his open adoration serves as an example that it's never too late to welcome sweeter things in life. Family, friends, adventure, and even the once in a lifetime 'eternal love'.
Habits you steal:
Calling Lilia ‘Dad’ (Inherited?): Not Father. Just Dad. Daddio. Peepaw. Pops. Ye old man. So informal. So funny. Lilia loves it and Silver turns red every time. One? Because you’re already thinking of him and his Father as your family. Two? Please. Please, let him breathe. Flustered is the most consistent emotion he shows aside from that graceful little smile of his, and people are starting to notice. He’s not used to such bluntness and it’s killing him. You need to be more careful! Not everyone knows about his situation! Lilia is such cheeky as shit over it and teases his son every off moment. Welcome to the Vanrogue’s, my friend. It’s a clusterf*ck. You’re going to love it.
“…N-no, I haven’t seen father since lunch. Perhaps check over near the club rooms. I can escort you before my next lesson, come along and take my hand.” -> Silver will never get used to you asking ‘Hey, have you seen Dad anywhere?’. He bites back the warning for you to lower your volume. It’s turmoil - truly. He doesn’t want you to ‘stop’ per-say…but maybe keep it in private? He adores your energy but the rumors.
Compliments (Inherited): Silver gets plenty of compliments. He’s amazing, after all. This is a habit because his reactions are priceless. Why is it developed? Because the man in question is the most wholesome being to exist. He effortlessly drops one-liners out of thin air, and then has the gull to act confused when you clutch at your chest. Silver is brutally honest when it counts. His words and his reactions are genuine. Truly priceless. His confidence desperately needs that bolstering, so much that you never go a single visit without paying him a compliment. It’s only fair. You do it until he takes them with anything other than a pass off or a denial. Even after, because appreciating Silver is the best part of your day. Congrats. You’re a simp. Big Ol’ simp - side note, being so forward for his sake has turned you confident in other aspects of life as well. Congrats on being the social one.
"Your hands are unnaturally soft for a student. Perhaps I am used to callus' from training, but yours are warm enough to feel through my gloves. I heard once that you can tell a lot about a person by their hands. Yours must reflect a gentle personality, which is true - hm? What's wrong?" <-Wholesome. Fucking wholesome.
Animals (Inherited): How do you feel about woodland creatures? Would you consider raising bunnies, or leaving the window open in the mornings for songbirds to perch? The answer is yes. Always yes. Otherwise they will whack at the glass until you do. Silver is beloved by nature. Being around Silver means being around all the animals that perch at his side when he clocks out in random places. Eventually you'll be waiting with birdseed in your pocket, prepped to distract those that perch on his head. Ramshackle has multiple bird baths out in the gardens, and you've built shelters for the wildlife on campus to camp out in when they visit (always when Silver does. Coincidence? No).
Just Chilling (Developed): Not relationship-exclusive. Any time you find Silver clocked out, it’s instinctual to just drop everything and lay down next to him so it looks like you’re both chilling out. Doesn’t matter if he’s asleep for ten minutes or two hours - you don’t leave him. Not unless someone trustworthy comes to take your place.
Haircuts (Developed): A lil snip here, a chop there - and you're cutting his hair in the kitchen at 9:00pm with one of the old sheets tied loosely around his neck like a bib. All it took was one time for him to nick his ear while doing it himself, and you so graciously forced him in a chair. Now you cut both his and his father's hair. Since Lilia's a little turd, and if Silver gets a freebie than so should peepaw. Briar Valley could use another stylist, y'know. You already have two loyal clients!
"Thank you. My bangs can get in the way of my training, so I try to keep them short. Maybe I should adapt a cut similar to Kalim's?....Why are you looking at me like that?" <- Kalim's hair is adorable, but if Silver cuts off his shimmering silk-soft locks it will literally be a crime against cosmetology.
Alarms (Inherited): You sleep through alarms. There isn't much to say. Have you seen his bedroom? There's like - a dozen clocks in there. The only one that gets him up is you, usually whacking him with a pillow because no amount of love will ever make up for dealing with nonstop ringing every morning. You started off having a near heart attack on the first night. A few years down the road, and it takes about 2-4 of the clocks to go off before you're up.
The Way Of The Sword (Inherited and Developed?): Another one without much to elaborate. Silver insists on teaching you some swordsmanship. He does not play around either, and is a very stern teacher. Lilia engrained the danger of weaponry and battle into him from childhood.
"Steel your nerves. They will only impede your progress. Do not worry about anything other than my instruction while there is a blade in your hand. I am here for that." <-The sword exists to protect, but that does not mean you are invincible. He won't put you through a Knight's training - but as one of the few 'sane' people? Homie, you really need to learn some self defense. It isn't even about his feelings (although he does worry). You are a walking magnet for bad luck, and a firm understanding of defensive combat is necessary so you don't end up dead in a ditch.
Habits He Steals:
Wet Wipes (Developed) : It’s so tempting to draw on Silver when he’s complete zonked out in the ninth dimension. How he hasn’t woken up to any uh…hehe, ‘special’ and ‘totally not vulgar’ images all over him on a daily basis is an honest shock. Especially in a campus full of dudes. Some not so friendly with the whole dorm rivalry going on. Then again…maybe it’s his aura. Drawing a dick on Silver’s forehead feels like a crime punishable by Lilia’s homemade gazpacho.
"...I sense a disturbance." <- Regardless. It’s your civic duty to make him a work of art…much to Silver’s reluctant compliance. Some day’s it’s heartwarming. He’ll wake up and find little hearts on his cheeks, or a note on his collarbone. A lipstick kiss left smack center of his forehead…which takes endless scrubbing to get off before equestrian club. "Mngh...ah, you're here father? I could smell jasmine and oakwood and thought - wait, isn't that MC's pencil case?" <- Other days Silver wakes up covered in tic tac toe games with his father snickering over him and your form making a speedy guilt-ridden retreat off in the distance - and yes, Ramshackle smells of Jasmine and Oakwood. From repairs and the herbal cleanings.
You’ve Got Mail (Developed): Squirrels make good messengers. It helps that you live in a dilapidated dorm with a lovely forest not too far for them to skitter about. It would be troublesome if you lived somewhere like Heartslabyul…Riddle would never allow Silver’s animal friends to stay. Since you’re so open to suggestion, and skittering about yourself, he’s made a habit out of using the animals for communication.
"Please take this gift to them, would you? Today is a special day, I must take precautions not to forget." <- He’s not too big on phones since he might pass out and miss a call…or forget. So Silver likes to pen his notes when he can and trust his little buddies to make sure you get them. It especially helps with big events like anniversaries or days he cannot make it home.
Mints (Inherited): Someone get this man an Altoid, stat. Whatever curse is on his ass, crack open that tin and shove three strong peppermints between his teeth. They’ll spark more than just a crack of the great beyond in him. Giving Silver a tin of strong mints is like giving a Victorian child one singular sour patch kid. You carry the things around to punish Grim. Y’all know it’s bad if the living garbage disposal won’t even eat them….now if we could just somehow compress Lilia’s cooking into a pill form, we might be onto something bigger.
"This is a remedy from your world? Oh - it's candy? Maybe it will work then...thank you. I'll update you if there are any changes."
The Open End (Developed): Silver’s precautions extend to all matters, big or small. He’s trained to be Malleus’ guard since he was a little boy, going through strict training and beyond in order to match royal standards. Some might think him cold, but his father raised him to care deeply, truly, and so he is proactive in ensuring your comfort. When at the cinema, he sits in the inner seat. Both so he’s blocking you from strangers and so you can have the chair with two arm rests. He walks on the street side of the sidewalk, shares his umbrella but covers you fully at the cost of his sleeve, gives you more of the blanket at night and once gave you his shoes when yours were pinching your toes. If there are two cupcakes, he pushes you the one with more sprinkles, and he never forgets to ask how your day is.
"Are you happy today?...I see. That's good. I've been working hard to not disappoint you as a partner. It is nice to know my efforts have been yielding results." <- Ever the hard worker. Silver works on your relationship like it's training - but not in a bad way. He just doesn't want to reflect poorly on you, especially when this is new to him and tracking his performance in a relationship isn't the same as studies or physical training. He could do with some verbal affirmations, just saying.
Smelling Salts (Developed) : Silver does not want to sleep all the time. He is determined to overcome it - and you support him by suggesting method after method. Sometimes it takes an otherworldly person to bring in new ideas? Another cook in the kitchen, y'know. Can you believe that in all of Twisted Wonderland, with their fancy shmancy potions and charms, no one thought to get him military-grade smelling salts (or trigger his fight/flight by putting a bit of Lilia's pot roast in front of his nose)? His curse is potent, but it staves the episode off just enough for him to get to a bench or out of a clearing. I swear - magic spoiled these people. It's a blessing and a curse. It's no cure but he'll take anything at this point. Who knows what other ideas you might bring.
"Mm...thank you. I am lucky to have someone as wonderful as them in my life. I strive to be a good partner and influence. Your compliment makes me quite happy. I will be sure to pass on the message." <- Silver's expressions are typically difficult to read, they're so miniscule. Yet it would take a blind man to miss the way his disposition softens. One might mistake the far-away look in his eye for an incoming siesta, but no. He's merely in love and excited to tell you how appreciative he is to have you in his life. Whatever dreams he has that night, you're in them. As always.
Habits you steal:
Volume (Inherited) : Spoken like a true Queen. Literally. Sebek’s volume blasts your eardrums like a child’s screech plugged into an amplifier broadcasted over the Night Raven intercom. Mans has his vocals, there’s no doubt about it. The thing is that Sebek won’t stop until he’s been heard, so you have to get loud for him to listen. That can be hard to tone down when he’s not around, and you have to remind yourself that Epel will hear you just fine at a level 2 not 6.
"Disrespectful! My human can speak to their desire, apologize for suggesting otherwise this very instant. It is an honor to hear their voice!" <-Aye...sometimes your volume hits the frequency where people cover their ears, just as they do for him. He misinterprets this as a smite on your freedom of speech.
Gotta Keep Up (Developed): Get those legs moving prefect. Ya gotta go sonic fast. Sebek-y long legs over here moves in big strides. Big strides for his big personality. One of his steps is the equivalent to three of yours, no matter how tall or jittery you are. He will out jitter you with his Type-A pacing. You’d think he was on a mission and not on a date with how Sebek zooms through a shopping mall. Sebek, honey, we’re here to buy clothes, not race the evil sales clerk and save Malleus from the storage room.
Bookies (Inherited): You never know when you’ll be stuck waiting around or following Malleus with him. Sometimes it’s a sacrifice you have to make for some quality time together, and it’s not so bad. Malleus is cool with it, Silver’s good company, and Lilia is mildly stressful company. You could just go on your phone to pass the time, but Sebek limits your screen time. No IPad partners or brain rot on his watch. Read a book. Don’t make him quiz you, ‘cause he will.
"I have been thinking to start a book club, and you can be the first among many initiates! This week we will be reading My Liege's autobiography as sourced from the Royal Palace. I can think of no better introduction!" <- Dear god, he'll put in the request too. Stop him. You love Malleus to pieces but 600 pages on his birth alone is just destructive.
Prim and Proper (Developed): It’s a bit hilarious that he takes personal offense when you’re not groomed properly. Especially when near Malleus (of course). If you want to follow with the troupe, you need to look the part. He’d likely ask for a Diasomnia uniform on your behalf if it wasn’t against the school dress code. Secretly though? He enjoys fixing your tie, hair, etc. It makes him feel useful but that sweet emotion gets masked by a scolding.
"Tsk. It is an honor to wear this uniform. You should take precautions to ensure your appearance doesn't reflect on Lord Malleus. As his chosen friend and my partner, you are a representative of Briar Valley. Step forward and allow me to preform an inspection." <- Sebek has more than one jealous bones in his body. They’re all jealous bones. Make sure he’s the one to fix your tie and not Rosehearts, unless you want him to sulk.
Battery Pack (Developed): Lowkey? Sebek zaps you frequently. Think the electric buzz from pulling out a plug too quick. The sparkles come out when he gets very emotional - which is all the time. So…yeah, you might secretly carry ointment for that. Don’t tell him? He feels awful. Not awful enough to stay calm when you ask him to charge your phone. Jokes on him. The anger zap brought it to 100%.
Habits he steals:
Response (Developed): Sebek has this teensey-weensey annoying habit of answering on your behalf. He thinks it a way of proving his devotion. Partners are meant to know each other down to the tiniest detail, no? So when he responds correctly, it’s like he’s passing a test by knowing exactly what you’d want.
"They will do no such thing! Your childish antics will only reflect poorly on your dormitory. You will not taint them into participating in needlessly reckless activities!" <- While his intentions are pure, the act itself can be frustrating. Especially when he puts his values in your mouth when chatting with friends. It’s a work in progress, but he will still become overzealous to order your coffee or recall your schedule if asked.
Handkerchief (Developed): Exchanging handkerchief with one’s partner was a popular courting method in the past. Considering the handkerchief Sebek carries is meant for his lord, him offering it to you is a grand gesture. Especially since he does not replace it with one meant for Malleus, as this is something exclusive to lovers, and carries one from you instead. If you don’t have one? Well - expect to get one asap. Author’s authority dictates that you will not disappoint him.
"The embroidery on this handkerchief is exquisite. According to Master Lilia, it is the same style as lacework from my homeland's establishment...and it is yours. Please accept this as a token of my affections."
Portrait (Developed): Sebek keeps your picture hidden at NRC. There's one stuck between his mattress and the boxboard, one behind his ID card in his wallet, and a small portrait he keeps taped under his deckchair. He cannot properly display it like Malleus' - partially from not wanting to disrespect his Lord and partially from bein emotionally constipated. Expect the exact opposite when he is older though. Listen. Do not try to tell me this man wouldn't commission an extra-large oil painting of his spouse to hang up in his barracks room in the palace. He's literally the blueprint of a fanboy, and if there's no available merch then us nerds get to commissioning.
Escort (Developed): Sebek Zigvolt can and will sit in the husbands' chair while you try on clothes in the store. He will carry your bedazzled hot-pink purse with pride, guarding the thing like it's worth millions. You can leave your cup with this one when at a ball worry-free. You have somewhere to be and he isn't on duty? Sebek is hot on your heels. He has no shame. Better yet? He's the one shaming anyone unable to do such simple things.
Gotta Slow Down (Developed) : Pairs with 'Gotta Keep Up' as he tries to match your stubby legs. At first Sebek attributed your slow pace to a lack of stamina, but no. He's just a jitterbug. Obviously he can't tug you along or stop every other minute for you to catch up either. It's funny watching you both try and forget to consider the other. On loop, a never-ending cycle. NRC hasn't seen a pairing like this in centuries.
Chivalry is not dead (Inherited...just not from you) : Lilia fucks with him and you’re subjected to many, many odd courting attempts…some he unironically takes a liking to.
"What must I do for you to reciprocate my intentions?! I have bestowed pearls shucked with my own hands, invited you to dance under moonlight, hung dried thyme over every door and given earthly offerings to all your kin! I implore you for transparency this instant!" <- Oh...oh, His trust in your batty elder wanes for months after being tricked so cruelly. Only until you accept (out of pity?). Then he feels guilty for ever doubting Lilia and begs for forgiveness. At least life never gets boring? Haha...hah...ha...
‘My human’ (Developed) : Sebek gets hit hard with a crippling awareness for your mental well being. He defended your 'honor' once and had it thrown in his face that he calls you a human more than your own name. Old habits die hard, and he prostrates himself on the ground as an apology. He really didn’t realize it came off so derogatory. Especially considering your relationship. Felt awful. Apologized profusely. Only says it in an affectionate way or with pride now. Tacking in the ‘my’ makes it better somehow? It's a work in progress.
"An apology is in order. My actions until now were unbecoming, and I am truly repentant. I cannot begin to beg for forgiveness, knowing that my words have struck you. I was wrong. You are no mere human, you are my human. A very special one whom I could not have foreseen in this lifetime" <- You know it's bothering him when he takes a gentle tone, looking directly in your eyes with shame open on display. Responsible enough not to look away and face his wrongdoing in the face. Even after you forgive him, Sebek will carry this lesson with him forever.
Flower preference (Inherited): In the language of flowers, which means a great deal to fae kind, he goes for the one associated with your birth month. Carries a pressed one as a bookmark, changes his cologne, and places a vase of blooms by his bedside that never seem to wilt.
"It is an honor! I shall never cease striving to improve. It is only natural that my partner does the same. Your acknowledgement is noted and appreciated. Please continue to treat them well." == Insulting Sebek is a challenge. The comment could be made with the most nasty undertone, but he only hears that you're behaving like a model citizen. You must, if you are beginning to resemble him in so many ways. Hearing that you are a positive influence on him is nothing short of baseline knowledge. Of course you are? He picked you to be his partner? Honestly. If people have time to sit around and gossip, they could go do something more productive.
Habits you steal:
Acronyms (Inherited): Does this truly come as a shock? Big L on your part if so. C'mon, this is Idia we're talking about here. Bro cannot go two sentences without pullin' some quote out of his mental backlog. Since you're stuck in TWST, not watching their culturally founding shows and cartoons is a crime. You'll be speaking in pseudo-lingo like how Spongebob quotes make their own language around these parts.
"Whehehe way to debuff your charisma stat - you might want to craft some mimic gear before Professor Trein locks ya in detention....n-not that I care! It's just that I'll have to solo tonight's raid and you're the one with the rotation buffed character!" <- On one hand? You get all his jokes and are able to translate what he says to other people. That's good. Less work for Idia. On the other hand? You get all his jokes and are able to translate what he says to other people. They're totes going to make fun of you now and it'll be his fault. You'll get lingo-lashed by professors and feel burdened and - okay. He'll shut up now.
Evil Laugh Who? Villain Where? (Inherited): We all know Idia has two modes: nerdy and sofuckingarrogantheneedsacoldshower. You know exactly when he's feeling number two via his laugh. That over boisterous 'WHEE HEE HEE' which is way too high pitched to belong to a villain but perfect for when Idia's in the zone. It comes out when you're feeling especially ecstatic or embracing your inner gremlin. A bit more subdued than his, but you've seen him do it so many times that the adaptation is subconscious.
"Ah -?! What w-was?....No! NO I DIDNT SAY ANYTHING! Just hurry up before we gotta interact with more NPCS! Awahhh my blood pressure's already spiking back up..." <- He first caught it when you insisted on playing one of those cheap festival-games outside the main market in Fleur City. All he wanted was to grab a grape juice and get back to his group before they noticed he ditched, but you saw some handstitched plushies and just like in some mainstream otome, he just had to get it for you. It was easier than sitting there watching you get cheated by a sleaze. He was amidst convincing himself that he robbed you of the fun, handing the doll over while sucking down his second grape juice when he heard it - on one hand, is this what he sounds like to other people? Scratch that. No way he's this cute - wait. No. He didn't just think that -
Gatcha (Inherited): One of Idia's go-to hangouts is playing an MMO. The dude already gave you a console as a gift for what happened at S.T.Y.X. One inkling of interest towards one of his main games and he won't hesitate to build you a PC. He'll take care of the maintenance and even send over some matching accessories. Ortho will be the one to drop it off of course, but it'll already be set up with whatever games he thinks you'll want to tag-team in and some extra money to explore on your own....and thus, the addiction begins.
"Hey, press this button for me real quick. I need to test something. N-no! I'm not setting you up, uggh just do it would you?" <- Your pulls are better than his and Idia can't decide if lady luck is smiting or blessing him. On one hand? Ultra rare pulls are going to a beginner account. Yet you're more likely to keep playing this way....fate truly tests the Shroud name every day.
Night Owl (Inherited and Developed): Freedom...is powerful. As the Shrouds are responsible for Blot Control, you're left with little to do at S.T.Y.X. You can work anywhere in the facility. As a lab assistant, tech maintenance, heck even the kitchens if you want - but Idia's on that night-life and likes to work when most are asleep. So you match it. Maybe not to a T - going to bed at 6:00am and waking at 4:00pm like him - but time does get a bit disoriented in a place where the sky is simulated.
"Why're you still up? This isn't a 24hr stream, y'know. Even I'm not crazy enough to do multiple all-nighters in a row...well, I'm off for now. Wanna watch the PREMO concert from last week with me?"
Vitamins (Developed): You take them. Idia is taking them. No matter what bro says - he cannot live off the Ignihyde snack machine. Get him the kiddy gummies if you have to. You started taking vitamin D in preparation for moving to S.T.Y.X in the future. Surely they've got something better than the options at Sam's, but you won't be developing Seasonal Affective Disorder anytime soon.
Snacks (Developed): A very simple kindness. Idia uses deliveries as an excuse to get you to visit Ignihyde, and in the future that doesn't change. Expect calls to do deliveries around S.T.Y.X and run 'confidential' reports whenever he's antsy for a visit. We all know he won't explicitly ask...ah, it's reminiscent of all the bogus orders he'd put in at Sams so you'd stop by.
Habits he steals:
Financial 'Responsibility' (Inherited): You both are very bad with money - and by bad? I mean that Idia is a jerk who thinks he can solve everything with money. Minor red flag - something to address. Definitely the type to apologize by sending an unnecessarily gigantic stuffed bear or something akin since he's afraid of saying something that will make it worse. Then pray you don't say anything as he stews over a fight like 12hr simmering sauce.
"Please spare me your double-standards the next time you're shoving vitamin water in my snack stash. SRSLY, Headmaster's a worse deadbeat than I thought if you're living like this....uh, don't tell him I said that" <- On the flip side, he's also flippant with that Shroud inheritance and will buy stuff on your behalf all the time. He's the type to go 'Oh, I thought it was going to be more. You live like this?' when wiring you money for groceries (because Grim ate your allowance in tuna smh). As for how you're bad? You're just flat broke man, so he's responsibly irresponsible as a result.
Vitamins Again (Inherited): Bro. Bro, genetics are making you pale but that diet is what is making those eyebags so prominent despite having a decent skincare routine. You need Vitamin D but he needs the whole spectrum. His potassium is so low, that you'll be staring him down with a plate of cooked salmon in one hand and a bottle of vitamins in the other. Is it pushy? Sure, but you don't want him keeling over within the next decade. Eat the vitamins or it's time to raid his search history. Ortho, get them medical reports out stat.
RPG (Developed): Every chance he gets, Idia will model his MC after you in an RPG. A character customization screen HATES to see this man coming, because he will sit there for hours until it is as close to your image as the system allows. You won't even know since he plays these games solo and has photographic memory to recreate you without a reference. If caught, will deny it despite the evidence being right there. Flat out takes this to the grave.
Sour Candy (Inherited): Fun fact? Citric acid is the perfect stimulant to shock someone out of a panic attack. You find the sourest candy he can tolerate, and it does it's job. If anything it creates a placebo effect, where when Idia tastes it he'll make an association with being anything but anxious. One time he ran out while stuck in a work meeting, and Ortho had to swipe a lemon from the cafeteria.
"Eugh! Sour! Sour! My tongue's gonna shrivel up like a prune! I should have knew this was a prank -" <- Proceeds to forget why he was anxious. Stops himself mid-rant, face sours realizing that you were right, apologizes under his breath and doesn't question you again.
Protective (Developed): Idia teeters the yandere line, to be fair. He's highly protective of the things he considers worth caring about - scratch that, the things he allows himself to care about - which are few. Very, very few. His self-doubt both keep this protectiveness in line while also fueling it. He is quick to convince himself that he has little right over your person, and that it's only a matter of time before his role gets snubbed or written out. Yet the moment his position becomes threatened by something he considers inferior? He hates the thought of some noface coming along and making a muck of your life. It's not his fault if you don't realize Idia's doing just that - but he'll be damned if someone else puts their two cents in, pushing him towards a bad ending.
"Hey - so uh, totally unprompted question that you can just ignore in all honesty - but what's it like living with so many ghosts? They don't give you any trouble or anything - 'cause if they do we've got a few empty rooms over in Ignihyde....only if you wanna! I mean - we're a buncha shut ins but it's pretty quiet and stuff. Okay, fading into the background now." <- Do you remember the Ghostbride? Idia does. Vividly. He also remembers you were the only person aside from Ortho who actually wanted to help him and didn't need cohersion. Stupid move on your part but he's hyper aware of the paranormal now regardless.
Sharing a bed (Developed): Unheard of. Especially since he's stated how miserable he was sharing a dorm - Idia surprises himself with this one. Not a single person would believe just how clingy bro is - but he's only clingy because 'you're' clingy - or so Idia loves to say if anyone teases him for going back on his whole 'solo for life' rants. He goes from the whole 'eww normie love bleh bleh' to 'oh you normies just don't get it because you don't have it hwee hwee'. Look. You're the one matching his sleep schedule, making him used to sharing a bed and having something other than a pillow to curl around - he didn't want to get used to it, he was adamant that this lifestyle was an absolute no-no, but now he's ten years too deep and he's screwed.
"Snkk - funny joke, Ortho. Almost got me there with that one. Inheriting any of my skills is like welcoming a one-track path straight to doomsville. You and I both know it." == Ever observant Ortho is very eager to share all the little changes he's seen in both yourself and Idia. Especially when the latter enters self-deprecation mode and is insistent that your relationship is nearing a band ending. In truth? Idia notices. He doesn't feel entirely himself anymore, and it terrifies him. Not everyone's meant for companionship, and for a long time Idia thought he was one of them. Someone perfectly content on their own with absolutely zero need for other people. Especially those hot-shot nosy hero types that would try to fix him without asking if he wanted to be 'fixed'. Thing is? You haven't pushed him to change at all - and he's freaking out because he's not supposed to want this. You're not supposed to want him.

Spoilers for 28 years later
Something I really was not expecting from 28 years later was the commentary on zombies and how we have come to perceive them (culturally speaking) as completely deshumanized bodies that we can kill gleefully.
28 years later is constantly reminding you that its zombies are infected people, not mythical creatures completly removed from us. That doesn't make them less dangerous, or killing them in self defense (or even mercy-killing them) wrong. But it does give a sinister spin on the "zombies killer" warrior figure that a lot of zombie media come to present as a given.
The movie does that through two main narative devices. Humanizing the infected and deconstructing the ideology behind the zombies killer figure.
It humanizes the infected notably by:
Introducing the Alphas. They are an extra threats sure, but they are also capable of reasons.
The entire plot with the pregnant infected woman.
The fact the everyone in Great-Britain is treated the same by the outisde world, infected or not.
Isla's disease. Isla is sick from a mystery illness that impairs her mental capacities. Isla is not infected, but she is often confused and sometimes even physically lashes out in way that are violent (when she wakes up and break everything on her nightstand, in the same scene she also turns against Jamie). I don't think it is a coincidence that Isla is the only character in the entire movie that kills an infected with her bare hands, and then has trouble remembering it. It is also not a coincidence that she is the first one showing compassion on screen to an infected.
The fact that Dr Kelson treats infected and non-infected in the exact same way in death and does not immediately turns to killing the infected to defend himself from them.
It deconstructs the figure of the zombie killer by:
Having Jamie being a troubling figure and an even more troubling father figure. He insists on taking his son on his first killing trip three years before it is common to do so (something the movie points out explicitly twice). He says he likes the smell of rotting carcasses. He lies to make his son appear more heroic (I am not saying that Spike was cowardly or anything, but still Jamie does embelish how this first hunt went).
The community that sanctions this kind of attitude is very much coded as conservative in an uncomfortable way. It is for example, routinely visually compared with English history (through the display of medieval battles and images of the boers war). However everytime it is compared to the medieval era (the mythical chivalric) the images shown are very clearly extracted from movies and artistic depictions rather than rigourous reconstruction. The only real images shown are from most recent colonial wars in which England commited war crimes.
It is nice to see a zombie film not taking the zombies as acceptable killable meatsack as a given.

What in the World is Going on With Mydei's Backstory?

One thing I noticed while playing through the story is that there appears to be something very strange going on with Mydei's backstory. Namely: It's almost like he's got two different backstories going on at once.
And I wonder if that's on accident... or on purpose. On the one hand, Amphoreus's plot has my brain spinning wild conspiracy theories about time loops and multiple lives and even the whole world possibly being some sort of simulation, which would make "two simultaneous timelines" make perfect sense.
(On the other hand... Hoyo doesn't have the best track record for character timelines. Remember how Sunday and Robin's mother was killed when the stellaron fell on Penacony... the same stellaron that fell before the Astral Express crash landed... centuries ago... 😂)
But anyway, here's what I mean:
In 3.0, Mydei makes statements that suggest he lived in Castrum Kremnos:
Phainon also says that Mydei is "homesick" for Kremnos, implying this was his home at some point.
The Chryseus Leo in Castrum Kremnos recognizes him by the sound of his voice, and Mydei responds as if reuniting with a well-loved mentor:
This suggests Mydei spent long enough in Kremnos to be affectionate with Chryseus Leo (he even calls him just "Leo" like a nickname) and have learned from him as a teacher.
In 3.1, Mydei speaks about the Kremnoan royal library as if he has personal knowledge of what scrolls/slates are available there. He also calls it "my library" with a possessive but especially fond feeling, as if he's spent a decent amount of time there and loves it.
And, during Trailblazer and Castorice's visit to past Castrum Kremnos, which supposedly takes place before Eurypon's fall, an NPC on the street curses Mydei as a traitor and claims that all the Kremnoans who went with him to Okhema are "deserters."

Castorice and the Trailblazer even have a discussion about whether Mydei's choice to leave Castrum Kremnos was brave or cowardly. This indicates that Mydei's whereabouts were well-known to the people of Castrum Kremnos before the city met its downfall.
However... there's a big problem with all this: None of this actually make sense with the backstory Mydei himself states in 3.1.
According to the flashback we experience in 3.1, Mydei was thrown into the Sea of Souls as an infant.
This correlates with what we know from his leaked voicelines (skip the image below if you want to avoid the leak!)
His earliest memory is in the Sea of Souls. He himself states he has no memory of living in Kremnos before his father threw him into the sea. He lived nine years in the Sea of Souls before returning to land.
Then, he states that he met his five friends directly after returning from the Sea of Souls:
And he states that they lived together "in exile" for ten years.
But... uh... who exiled them?
It literally can't have been Eurypon, given that Eurypon doesn't recognize Mydei at all and explicitly had no idea Mydei was still alive the whole time:
A few lines later, Mydei also states:
"When we left Kremnos."
So Mydei... went back to Kremnos after leaving the Sea of Souls and meeting his friends...? And he lived in the inner city and had access to the royal library, apparently, but nobody loyal to the king ever noticed him? And then he was somehow exiled after that? For... some other crime entirely (since it wouldn't be for being the missing crown prince, given Eurypon didn't know he was back)? Or just decided to self-exile at some point, despite living presumably relatively peacefully in his home nation?
When could this even have fit in the timeline?
We're told that by "the fifth year" of Mydei returning from the Sea of Souls (Mydei would have been 14 years old) three of his five friends were already dead, and he'd already waged war with at least two different countries (Ladon and Aidonia).
We're never remotely given an indication here that there is room in the timeline for Mydei to have returned to Kremnos and just lived there as an undercover citizen. He instead specifically states that he and his friends lived in the wilds of Amphoreus, roaming the land for ten years.
He even notes that all of his friends died before he ever had a chance to bring the detachment to join up with Okhema:
There's also the entire aspect of Mydei's situation being paralleled to the children he meets in Okhema. When he asks them "How can you consider Kremnos your home when you never lived there?" we, as the players, are supposed to recognize that Mydei feels this way too: Castrum Kremnos was not his home--because theoretically the timeline is telling us he never actually lived here.
This is reinforced by the "As I've Written" chapter, where Okhema is once again posited as Mydei's only home:
So... Something is really not adding up here, especially if you think to the NPC in past Castrum Kremnos who describes Mydei word-for-word as both the "crown prince" and a "Chrysos Heir" who has already deserted for Okhema with his army before Eurypon's death.
In the Kremnos ruins, there's this memory fragment where Krateros confirms that Mydei and the detachment are already working with Okhema before Eurypon's death:
Except that this definitely conflicts with the timeline Mydei gives for his own joining up with Okhema. He says all of his friends died before the detachment went to Okhema, and explicitly that Hephaestion died after Eurypon:
So this is Schroedinger's detachment, both allied to Okhema and not at the same time. 😂
We also know that Mydei didn't live in Kremnos after killing his father, since he explicitly states:
Why would the people need to be led back into Kremnos... if they hadn't left yet...
Furthermore, some of Hepaestion's dialogue also makes it sound like Mydei already had the Kremnoan people with him at this time, and that the migrant Kremnoans were already waiting for Mydei to lead them back to Kremnos:
Theoretically, Mydei could have been traveling around Amphoreus just picking up random Kremnoan exiles and formed the detachment out of those random Kremnoans he picked up... maybe? I guess? Since it definitely doesn't make sense that he absconded from Castrum Kremnos with a whole army and his dad never even noticed!
And the icing on the cake even. During his confrontation with Eurypon, Mydei says:
He knew about Nikador's soul being split?! He knew about what had been done to make Nikador immortal way back then? And then he just... FORGOT before 3.0?! Whattttt is even happening herreeee?
The only way even part of this works as a single timeline is if the events are:
Mydei is thrown into the Sea of Souls as an infant.
Mydei lives 9 years as a feral siren child in the Sea of Souls.
Mydei finally returns to land, meets his five friends.
Mydei, despite knowing his father is out to kill him, sneaks back into Castrum Kremnos and somehow manages to find a place to live as an undercover citizen (under a fake name too, presumably?!) in the inner city even though he would theoretically be perceived as a penniless, nameless orphan at this point. Maybe he couch surfs at his five bros' houses, I don't know lol.
In some relatively short period of time (less than five years for sure), he manages to build an entire detachment army under his father's nose with no one giving away his identity to anyone loyal to the king (despite the fact that we see many Kremnoan citizens still loyal to Eurypon all the way to the end), then he exiles himself and his entire army from Kremnos, still without the king even noticing?
Mydei and his army pillage randomly for ten years, then Mydei returns and kills his father.
He leads the Kremnoan detachment to Okhema to join Aglaea's cause.
However, this still can't resolve the continuity error of the random people of Castrum Kremnos knowing he's 1) alive, 2) the crown prince, and 3) assisting Okhema all before Eurypon, the literal king, even learned Mydei was still alive, plus knowing about the plot to break Nikador's soul up and then somehow just flat out forgetting that lol.
Even Castrum Kremnos's timeline itself is confusing
There's also the weird stuff going on with Castrum Kremnos's timeline.
We know that Castrum Kremnos's last Kremnos Festival took place at the end of the Chrysos War. In 3.0, Phainon talks about this war and the tales of the Chrysos heirs involved with it as if it is something that took place long enough ago to have become the stuff of legends:
When being exposed to the present Kremnos, Gnaeus implies that a significant amount of time must have passed between Eurypon's death and the Trailblazer and Castorice's mission:
And Gnaeus also confirms that supposedly thousands of years have passed between Castrum Kremnos's last Kremnos Festival and the present:
Mydei implies that the people of Castrum Kremnos have been away from their homeland long enough for their traditions to have faded:
Aelius, who is a grown-ish looking NPC from the "Love in the Time of Black Tide" questline, notes that when he came with Mydei to Okhema, he was just a child:
All of this suggested that Castrum Kremnos's downfall actually happened years and years ago, some of it suggesting possibly decades or even centuries of lying in ruin.
The fact that an NPC aged to adulthood or near to it while Mydei didn't change at all definitely had people convinced in 3.0 that Mydei was literally "immortal" in that he did not age, suggesting he could be centuries old.
However, that... also doesn't make sense.
We have Damionis who managed to take a picture at the last Kremnos Festival, suggesting it wasn't very many years ago, given that he's clearly not an older NPC:
And Krateros, who clearly does age, is shown as an already grown man in the flashbacks with Eurypon and Gorgo.
To complicate matters even further, we have two Gorgos--one in the past and one who was Mydei's mother, but both of whom achieved the same feat. The devs even deliberately obfuscate on the original Gorgo's identity through the readables to further link the Gorgo of the past with the Gorgo of the present by refusing to state the gender of the Gorgo of the past:
It's not on accident. They want players to conflate the two Gorgos.
Andddd another edit, because I keep finding things that don't add up. When Phainon and the Trailblazer go to Kremnos to fight Flame Reaver, they run into a bunch of Kremnoans fighting the black tide. Phainon speculates that Aglaea must have rallied them, except...
youtube
That guy definitely has no idea why Aglaea would be giving him any commands, and, more than that--he doesn't even know who Phainon is. Could there really be any of the Kremnoan detachment that don't at least know of Okhema's Chrysos Heirs? And why would he imply that their "king will deal with you" if Mydei is aligned with Okhema?
I don't think these Kremnoans came from the time period we think they did...
How can we reconcile this?
We could just handwave this and say "Classic Hoyo, not great with keeping track of their own writing." We have evidence they've made mistakes (and retcons) before.
But with timelines being so central to Amphoreus's plot... I'm suspicious, enough so to suggest that there may be enough conflicting information here that this could be on purpose.
In fact, if you separate out the events that don't make sense together, it almost appears as if there could be two completely different timelines, or as if events from two different timelines have become stitched together, trying to create one coherent story and yet, like mismatched puzzle pieces, not quite adding up.
In one timeline, the one that seems most prevalent, Mydei (who ages normally) was tossed into the Sea of Souls as an infant despite his mother's protests, lived (and died) in the sea nine years, then was discovered by a band of five Kremnoan exiles who became his friends, wandered with them for ten years, and eventually returned to Castrum Kremnos to kill his father at around 19 years old. From there, he led any Kremnoans who were willing to follow him to Okhema as refugees and as a detachment army, and they've served in Okhema for no more than a few years--enough that Aglaea still calls him a youth and Mydei hasn't noticeably aged since he killed his father, and enough that Damionis, who visited Castrum Kremnos during the last festival, is still a young man.
In the other timeline, we have a much more ancient Castrum Kremnos, one which had already fallen into ruin long enough ago for its final king to turn to dust and the Chrysos War to become the stuff of legends, according to Phainon. In this timeline, a version of Mydeimos who was much more familiar with the city, one who apparently had access to the royal library and lived in the inner city of Castrum Kremnos (which Phainon says matches him having the status of a prince), suddenly decides to betray his country, possibly due to seeing his father decline into madness. He becomes a "traitor of a crown prince" according to the regular Kremnoans, but manages to assemble an army of his own loyal followers, which becomes the Kremnoan detachment that lays waste to enemy countries for years. At some point, he is recognized as a Chrysos Heir during the Chrysos War era and allies himself with Okhema, and then only after that returns to kill his father.
And the biggest hint we have to support this "alternate timelines" theory?
The game itself.
When Mydei returns to Castrum Kremnos, we actually see two different scenarios weaving together--the "truth" as we know it, with a destroyed Castrum Kremnos, and the other where the nation is whole and happy.

The assumption the game leaves players with on the surface is that Mydei is simply imagining things, envisioning a "dream" scenario where he reunites with his lost friends and gets to live in a flourishing Castrum Kremnos with his people.
However... I feel the need to point out that every time the scene cuts between the "dream" and "reality"... We actually hear the exact same sound effect that plays whenever you activate Oronyx's miracles to travel between timelines.
For comparison, Mydei's "dream":
youtube
And Oronyx's miracles sound effect:
youtube
In fact, the visual effect of swapping timelines (darkening on the edges of the screen, a flash of blue geometric shapes) is actually also perfectly identical, and you can even hear Oronyx's voice as Mydei shifts between "reality" and his supposed "dream."
If it were just the repeated sound effect, it might be easy to say it's just Hoyo reusing resources. But... why play Oronyx's animation and voice over the scene if this isn't a time shift?
Unless... all the confusion is on purpose.
Is it possible that what we're seeing unfold in Amphoreus isn't the truth? That the stories we're hearing and seeing might not be whole stories and are instead just scattered pieces? Different timelines stitched together, like someone telling stories about the past but misremembering the details? With memories overlapping, or overwriting each other, or being altered by timelines or time loops collapsing in on themselves? (Something similar happens with Tribios's story, by the way--Tribbie insists that in the ancient timeline, Tribios was completely alone and that we as time travelers with Oronyx's power are in fact only witnessing a memory, and yet Phainon notes several times that it's not possible for Tribios to have made it through without outside assistance, suggesting the two timelines are in fact overlapping, and what Tribbie remembers in her memory isn't actually accurate.)
Is it possible that the events of Mydei's backstory don't quite add up because they're not supposed to?
Is Mydei really imagining things as he returns to Kremnos... or are we actually seeing entirely different timelines or lives "resonate" with each other, collapsing into each other to create a single jumbled story that not even Mydei realizes isn't true?
Or... Maybe Hoyo just goofed again. I guess we'll just have to wait and see! 😂
#honkai star rail#mydei#amphoreus#3.1 spoilers#amphoreus spoilers#Mydei's backstory is actually a mess#BUT MAYBE IT'S A MESS ON PURPOSE#*huffs copium*#I haven't engaged with all the leaks#so I may have missed the plot being spilled already#but my theory is that Amphoreus is actually a simulation like the Elysian Realm from HI3#and that what we're experiencing isn't the real story of a real place#but the fairytale imaginings of whoever is holding that simulation together#like one giant allegory of the cave meets lotus eaters analogy#just saying!!#Youtube

There's a bit of a role reversal with Faramir and Eowyn, in terms of how their narratives include tropes and plot points that are often traditionally applied to characters of the other sex.
Eowyn goes to war because she refuses to be left behind to be burned inside the house when the battle is done, as is often the fate of women.
Faramir actually is nearly burned alive at the hands of the patriarch of his family when said patriarch believes the battle is over and hope is lost. While Eowyn is out on the battlefield, fighting, Faramir is stuck inside the home, burning.
Between the two, Eowyn is the one we see go on more of an inner journey. She changes more over the narrative, and has to deal more with her own flaws and personal demons, as well as the injustices inflicted upon her. The climax of her story comes with a great moment of heroism and courage in battle. She is rescued by a hobbit, but as an ally in battle, not as a damsel in distress.
Faramir in the books doesn't feel tempted by the ring, and is almost a paragon of virtue. About as much as a Man in Middle Earth can be. He's closer to Arwen and Galadriel than Eowyn is, in his near perfection, in how he inspires and guides others. He is also rescued by a hobbit, but in that moment he is helpless, a damsel in distress. He is rescued because others love him for his virtue and goodness.
So often it's the other way round. Not only is the woman usually the one trapped inside, in need of rescue, while the man is out there fighting, the woman's heroism traditionally comes from the list of virtues she possesses, while the man's heroism comes from his deeds and the things he accomplishes. The man fights, the woman inspires.
But during the Battle of Pelennor fields, it is Eowyn who fights, and while she does inspire Merry, she inspires him not as a paragorn, but as an example of courage that Merry finds himself compelled to live up to. He is inspired to fight by her side, instead of fighting for her.
Faramir is sick and unconscious. His agency is denied him by his father, who decides on his behalf there's nothing left for him to live for. And it is a rush for the heroes; Pippin and Beregond, to save Faramir, and it is explicitly stated that Beregond only broke the law because he was inspired to do so out of his great love for Faramir, which is shared by all. In that moment, Faramir's role is closer to the traditional fairy tale princess, whose goodness inspires the heroes into fighting for her during her peril.
And afterwards, it is Eowyn who has to fight to find meaning in life again, to choose joy and hope over despair, which Faramir, with his loving kindness, wisdom, and gentleness, inspires her to do.
I love that, and love thinking on how that affected their relationship going forward.
Eowyn must have liked that with Faramir, she's not being married to someone who will require her to take on every aspect of the so called "woman's role" (necessary, but limiting) which has been inflicted on her at her own expense by the men in her life, so they can be free to partake in the "man's role". Perhaps in turn, Eowyn's predisposition for more martial pursuits; even if she has embraced healing and gardening and no longer lives for battle, would also mean she can take on some of the certain necessary duties that Faramir finds taxing.
Between the two, there must have been a more equal division of labour and responsibilities, and therefore more freedom on both sides. Neither one of them fully suits the roles that society has assigned to them due to their gender, and in marrying each other, they no longer have to.

Moshang fanfic idea that I've been holding onto for a while but have no strong plot for: the Airplane Extras meet-ugly happens as per canon UNTIL Mobei-Jun asks why Shang Qinghua saved him / what Shang Qinghua wants from him.
At which point, a panicking Airplane desperately searches for a compelling and believable character motivation as to why he would stupidly save the life of a murderous demon who might still kill him, and hastily blurts out: "You're so beautiful that I fell in love at first sight!"
Important to note: this is not true. It is bullshit. Airplane thinks MBJ is incredibly hot, obviously, but he does not know or like this guy as a person, because MBJ is both a relative stranger and a scary asshole.
Also important to note: some demon cultures have a marriage kidnapping tradition, but that happens under very specific and usually pre-arranged circumstances that obviously do not apply here. Mobei-Jun being whisked off to the equivalent of a shitty motel room by some random human outer disciple, who absolutely cannot forcibly keep him there, has no real romantic connotations. It's just weird. There's not even any life debt tradition aspect to it; Mobei-Jun could just kill this guy now and it wouldn't say anything about his personal honor even if anyone found out. It would just be humiliating. This guy would have to be fucking nuts to think this interaction is anything that anyone, especially any authority, would recognize, and that's not what this guy is claiming anyway. All he's doing is claiming that he's suddenly in love with a hostile stranger, which is still nuts.
So, Mobei-Jun (who is also still a teenager) is just... surprised and extremely confused. Does this kind of thing... honestly happen... in real life? Really??? And Airplane is like, "Aw, fuck, I made it weird. Well! I have no choice but to go with this!" and starts up the "Please don't kill me!" thigh-hugging routine.
Somehow, Moshang make it out of that meet-ugly similarly to how they usually do. Airplane is like, "Well, fortunately, nothing will ever come of this! No way would someone like Mobei-Jun ever return the feelings of his gross, pathetic human servant. I can freely express how sexy I think he is and it'll just be meaningless lovesick flattery to this asshole." Real emotions? That soft, squishy bullshit? Airplane does not have the TIME to contemplate having sincere feelings. He's in survival mode.
And teenage Mobei-Jun, spoiled demonic nobility extraordinaire, who otherwise would have spent the next 20 years or so thinking of his human servant as gross and pathetic and repulsive but strangely useful, is like, "I think... I'm being wooed...??? Is this working on me...? He's kind of... not unattractive, actually, for a madman. Maybe I should try to be... nice... to him??? How do humans do this???"
And THEN, months to years later, young and in-love Mobei-Jun somehow finds out that Shang Qinghua outright lied to him. (And by this point is pretty fond of Mobei-Jun but still hasn't looked directly at his own real emotions for years. He's busy.)
Arguably, the above idea is one way to interpret normal canon already, with Mobei-Jun reading more than is mutually understood into Shang Qinghua's bullshit, failing to communicate what he thinks their relationship is (if he even fucking knows himself), and then feeling betrayed when Shang Qinghua ditches him for being an asshole. But I'm charmed by the idea of distracted Shang Qinghua explicitly lying, actively making it WORSE by knowingly behaving "romantically" under the assumption that it's harmless fawning because Mobei-Jun basically doesn't even HAVE emotions, and then getting totally blindsided by having his "impossible unrequited love" returned and accidentally, apparently breaking Mobei-Jun's heart. Fuck!!!

I've kept so many of my thoughts on this era in the drafts for fear of being labelled a 'hater' and being bullied out of the fandom, but everything I've feared and expected and complained about, it's all been crystallized in The Reality War.
I say this as someone who adores this show, who has held it close to my heart for as long as I can remember, as a Flux defender, as a Clara apologist, as a classic and nuwho fan, as a pronoun having, protest sign wielding leftist, and with the deepest of wishes for the show to be better. I HATE this era.
We need NEW voices, we need RTD and his cliquey upper management out, we need a writers room where creatives can share and workshop ideas not some singular self-styled "genius" who doesn't share his plans with anyone until the day he hands in the script. We need redrafts, not first drafts (by Russells own admission many of his scripts are released as first drafts). We need lower budgets, because when the show is made to minimise on expensive spectacle it is forced to carry itself on the quality of its writing.
The criticism that the show is too full of its own history has been characterised by some as hollow because 'every era references the shows past'. But the problem here is framing and purpose. Russell has explicitly stated his GOAL is to 'generate content' and 'social media storytelling'. Every few episodes need the big REVEAL. To the point that by Wish World I personally felt literally NOTHING at the Omega reveal. Something that had it happened a few years ago I'd have been thrilled about, I left the episode numb. Because we had Midnight, Fugitive!Doctor, Susan, The Rani, Poppy and Rogue in the previous four episodes alone. Most of which are framed with flashbacks and the grand 'moment of reveal' and audience teasing, and I just knew they'd never pay off satisfyingly, they're there for the sharable moment on social media.
Both season big baddies this era are defeated by a random laser beam with no established precedent. It's Davies-ex-Machina at its worst, The Last of the Time Lords is my least favourite finale for this exact reason (among many more reasons) but even that at least SET UP the means of its big reset.
Answer me honestly WHY Omega was in this episode. Because he doesn't tangibly DO anything, either thematically or narratively. The Rani's scheme could have been to summon a giant ham sandwich and the plot would have been unchanged. The reason it was Omega was because RTD wanted people to post about it and go 'Wow Thing I Know' and get a million headlines like 'Doctor Who Just Did Something CRAZY'. Omega is reduced to a big CGI monster with less than 5 minutes screen time because he isn't Omega, the interesting villain with motivations of his own, he is simply a vehicle for the name recognition of Omega.
This is Doctor Who as content. As IP. It is the MCU, or Star Wars, or any number of modern franchises, where the 'big return' and references come first and the plot is thought up around making them happen not the other way round.
This is just scratching the surface of the problems, not mentioning the hollow corporate politics that are a thousand steps back from where the show was in the Capaldi run. The botched messaging on extremely important topics that come across bordering on straight up right wing. The failings of consistent characterisation. The ways in which Kate Stewart keeps doing deeply deeply fucked up things (excuse me you MICROCHIP and TRACK your employees, some of which are MINORS???) and the Doctor refuses to comment. The narrative failings of season arcs. The way so many of RTD's scripts this era are direct retreads of episodes he already wrote. The endless behind the scenes nightmares. The eight episode seasons being fundamentally a bad fit for a show with this core premise. I could go on for hours.
There have been great episodes in this era, just as there have been in every era. But on the whole this has been one of the deepest low points for me. I love Ncuti, I love Millie and Varada and the whole cast and I will miss those that are leaving dearly... this is not their fault. But if the show gets cancelled (which it WONT, it will return to being low budget) I will not mourn it. It has been dead to me for some time.
Sack Russell T Davies. Sack Julie Gardner. Sack Jane Tranter. Sack Phil Collinson. Sack everyone who has led to this era of ouroborosing the shark.

Recontextualizing John Constantine's Queer History through Remembrance
John Constantine is popularly recognized as a queer character. He's celebrated as a bi character unrestrained from the desire to be "good representation" in the sense that he is a thoroughly flawed man. Many mainstream queer characters aren't afforded that complexity due to the pressures of respectable representation.
But as any og Hellblazer reader will tell you- his canonization as a bisexual man was not exactly straight forward. It took years of queer coding, nebulous canonization depending on which writer wrote for Hellblazer, before John was comfortably celebrated as the bisexual character he is today. And even then, his modern canonization as a queer man comes with an inevitable corporate push to soften John's edges. It's been argued that his original coding had more texture and connection to queer history and community than the new stuff.
So when pitching a "Hellblazer Pride Special" fancomic, how do you take all that history and make something truly holistic with John that nods to his past and present? There's multiple answers to that question, but here's how us and @pdmarshall-comics went about it with our fancomic Remembrance.
[Top left is Hellblazer #2, top right is Hellblazer #7, bottom left is Swamp Thing #76, bottom right is Hellblazer #77]
Some Hellblazer history first! John Constantine debuted as a supporting character in Swamp Thing #37 before heading his own series through Hellblazer in 1988. If you're going into og Vertigo Hellblazer expecting John to be characterized as a bisexual man from issue #1, you're going to be disappointed. Or at least, that's not a helpful way of contextualizing Hellblazer queer history when reading these comics from the 80s. Famously, it took until issue #51 of Hellblazer in 1992 for John to say, in text, that he's had "the odd boyfriend" as one of his past lovers. But that doesn't mean early Hellblazer didn't give writers and readers evidence to speculate on John's sexuality. It's complicated.
John Constantine was always characterized as a "promiscuous" character. He is shown to be concerned over the AIDS epidemic that affected many of his close gay friends, the company of which has garnered suspicion from his friends and family. John's early character design codes him as a queer man; he initially wore earrings on both ears, but then wore only one earring on his right ear ("the gay ear") before modern comics removed this part of his design entirely. Despite this subtext, most of the time John is narratively positioned as someone separate from the queer community in these early comics.
[Left panel from Hellblazer #3, right panel from Hellblazer #6]
In early Hellblazer, John is friends with an elderly gay man named Ray Monde. When they discuss politics together, Ray remarks "No point in voting. I mean, none of them are on my side nowadays, are they?" making it clear that no politician cares for the rights of gay men.
It's the way Ray says "my side" that implies John isn't considered part of the queer community here (for me at least). Ray doesn't say "none of them are on our side". Later, in the Resurrection Crusaders arc, where a series of hate groups target minorities (including queer people), John narrates his disdain for violence: "I hate violence. But you can't pretend it isn't happening, can you? After all, it could be a mate getting the battering, like Ray Monde." Narratively, John doesn't see himself as a target of these hate groups. Ray Monde is the outwardly queer character here, not John Constantine.
From this, I've always been interested in reimagining the plots of early Hellblazer with John Constantine explicitly re-written as a queer man. He's no longer a plausible ally and bystander, but actively under threat the same way Ray Monde was in these stories. I wanted to recontextualize his whole journey and origin story as a narrative about queer survival. I just didn't know how to frame this idea with a specific plot in mind. And that's when @pdmarshall-comics, Phoebe, came in!
Phoebe pitched a story of John investigating reports of a "demon dog attacking teens" who were vandalizing Ray Monde's grave. Pulling from the English Folkloric Church Grim as the story's "villain"- this demon dog would protect the spirits of the grave from those who seek to damage the graveyard. In an act of kindness, John cleans the grave to appease the Grim.
We loved this as a pitch! It was giving the energy of Hellblazer #27 Hold Me, where a horrifying supernatural threat was solved with kindness. Plus it was easy to interlay flashbacks into the story. Phoebe also insisted on including Xanthe Zhou, which I was down for as long as I could reimagine them with more cultural specificity (in both Asian and queer Asian culture).
And so Remembrance, (named after Trans Day of Remembrance) the Hellblazer Pride Special fancomic, began!
[top left panel from Hellblazer #3]
Remembrance opens with a flashback of a very young John Constantine and his Mucuous Membrane friends watching a drag show. Because of course. I kept the look of John's band mates fairly faithful, but wanted John to look more non-conforming to contrast his present day appearance. He wears way more earrings, shows off his hair, puts on make-up, and wears lace.
In canon, John describes Ray Monde as an "old queen" and "outrageous fag" so. As you can see. That's more than enough to assume Ray Monde moonlights as a drag queen. I wanted a song to bookend Remembrance, specifically from a queer British band (more or less from the 80s) to highlight and set the mood. After looking through a bunch of old songs, we picked Culture Club's Miss Me Blind for Ray to sing during his drag show. I think its lyrics are delightfully perfect for the tone of this story. I imagine Ray sang a more sultry version, but a high energy one works too!
[top panels from Spirit World #2]
In the present day, we have John Constantine and Xanthe Zhou walking through a graveyard. In canon, Xanthe is a new Chinese nonbinary character (solo-debuting through Spirit World in 2023) that is often paired with John as his younger friend. They're a "half dead, half living" Envoy between the Spirit World and the land of the living. It's a whole thing. While I think Xanthe is a fun enough new hero, I do want more thematic substance out of them- especially if they're going to be paired with someone as complex as John. They didn't even have a flaw to grow from in their solo, that's how burdened by "good qpoc representation" they are. So we've made some tweaks!
While Hellblazer is full of magic plots, all of it is grounded through John Constantine being ordinary. Being into the occult is something anyone irl can do. Classically, John's "powers" are his wits, not so much his "magical superpowers" as modern comics tend to default John into. I wanted Xanthe to follow that tone by reimagining them as a Chindo shaman (or dukun), based on my friend @manggageprek, or Audris! Who also served as authenticity reading for Xanthe (I appreciate you friend). I know "it's superhero comics, nothing is grounded!" but being "grounded" is what sets Hellblazer apart from the usual cape comics fare. And I want Asian Spiritualism to get that kind of representation too.
[Left, Hellblazer #7. Right, Spirit World #2]
I've been pretty thorough before about what I think of John and Xanthe's friendship in canon. It isn't very substantial. It's "old guy" and "young sassy kid" generic banter, with a sprinkle of shallow queer solidarity. I wanted Xanthe and John's relationship (even when it's strained) to feel unique and specific. For one, let Xanthe be on a first name basis with John. But also we portrayed Xanthe as being comfortable speaking in instances of Indonesian and Singlish with John. He doesn't blink or ask for translation. They're close enough that John even understands the term "tongzhi", slang and essentially the Chinese version of the word "queer" but more culturally collectivist in meaning. Fun fact, I learned this word from talking with the founder of the Indonesian gay movement himself. I learned gay slang from a queer elder you could say.
It was important for me that Remembrance featured even an instance of non-english queer vocabulary. Terms like queen, fag, queer, gay, and lesbian are all over Hellblazer comics in the 80s and 90s. But how many queer terms are in the queer comic Spirit World in 2023? Zero. Not even "trans" or "nonbinary". As Ray Monde said in canon, "don't be afraid to speak its name" avoiding queer terminology is affectively "pushing it back into the closet", and I think any true Hellblazer Pride special would follow up on the bravery of the 80s and 90s by including more diverse queer vocabulary. That means non-western terms too.
[disclaimer; this isn't to imply that every queer story needs to Say The Word. Queer stories are broad enough to look any kind of way. I'm just discussing an issue I'm seeing as a result of modern respectability in this context.]
Up next we have Remembrance's goodest boy ever: Johnny the doggie! We left it to Phoebe to design him, and I love the direction taken here. I originally imagined Johnny as a big and frail dog, but having a small lightly colored Scottish terrier of a dog to bury the lead on the twist ending was inspired!
It was our idea to have John's eventual act of kindness to the Church Grim be paralleled by Ray doing a similar act of kindness to a "different" dog. And so, Johnny the dog came to be. John also has a canonical dislike/fear of dogs, so of course we had to have him confront his worst fears.
[left from Hellblazer #27]
A little thing: Ray's clipping agency atop a "junk shop in Camden" known as the Serendipity, is in the background as Ray and John talk in this flashback.
[from Hellblazer #7]
The second flashback was where more straight forward re-draws from Hellblazer came in. Much of the challenge was translating the "artistically limited printer colors" energy of the og pages into my "the spectrum of the rainbow is yours" modern digital coloring style I love indulging in, haha. I still wanted the vibe of the og's colors, so I translated the warmth of Ray's home into the color scheme, and the striking red violence of the og as an overwhelming color in my version.
Since the original Resurrection Crusader storyline is about Zed (John's love interest), a lot of the framing and composition centered her. For Remembrance, I made sure Ray was centered in the visuals this time. His face gets seen more, and his death lingers on him (where in canon the focus was Zed being kidnapped).
The random family mausoleum is dedicated to Jamie Delano, first writer of Hellblazer (issues #1-40)! He created Ray Monde, and we have him to thank for a lot of John's early characterization (beloved by many fans).
The "Bit late for that" joke John makes at the "God Save the Queen" poster came from Phoebe, who reacted in that exact way upon seeing an identical poster in a shop window. It was so funny that we snuck it in to the comic.
In this scene, Xanthe recites the Ta Pei Cou mantra to the Church Grim as a means of calming the creature down. What Xanthe is pronouncing in the speechbubbles isn't "proper pinyin" and more a "what sounds closest on a Chinese Indonesian's accent/tongue" kind-of-deal. I wanted to portray it this way because it's just a neat look into how diverse Chinese culture and practices can be depending on the diaspora. It's a specificity I like!
According to Audris, "the further you go along the spiritual path, the less material stuff is necessary [...] most of the things I do right now is just like reading mantra + intention. Big rituals still need material stuff but it's more so the symbolism than the actual items."
There's a certain fatigue I have with how Asian Spiritualism is portrayed in western media. The real way these beliefs are practiced "isn't interesting enough" so they make a spectacle out of Asian spiritual characters by having them do hollywood fu and have giant weapons. Just so it's visually interesting to western audiences. My limit was seeing a keris (a deeply spiritual item) be turned into an anime chain whip in Raya and the Last Dragon. You can listen to Audris complain about it here, in fact wkwk.
So you can imagine my fatigue seeing Xanthe wielding a giant sword and being "the spiritual Asian character". My opinion on this certainly isn't absolute and I'm sure there's plenty of Asian readers who love the giant sword. But it was my goal to portray Xanthe with more cultural specificity, and what I learned from my friend is deeply more interesting than giant sword #507 to me. If John Constantine can grip readers despite having no cool weapon and being famously bad at combat, why can't Xanthe Zhou?
The scene where a flood of memories comes bursting out of the incense came from Audris! Behold their epic visualization on the right. In traditional Chinese culture, incense sticks (or joss sticks) are burnt as a means of communing with the spiritual world (for funerals, holidays, prayers). The smoke rising upwards signifies hopes and prayers reaching Gods or ancestors. It's customary to burn 3 incense sticks per person, and bow three times (showing devotion and respect by humbling yourself).
What I'm saying is that, in Remembrance, John did in fact light incense and bow three times as is tradition. Consider it the beginning of reparations for his canonical crimes against the Asian community. But it's also just another way of showing-not-telling the cross-cultural friendship he has with Xanthe.
[og panels from Hellblazer #8]
The flashback to Ravenscar! Loads of references and re-draws to Hellblazer #8. For Remembrance, we reimagined the dehumanizing treatment John was subjected to in Ravenscar to also have an implied conversion therapy angle in "fixing" John as a queer boy. Just about every line of dialogue for this sequence was lifted from Hellblazer #8, with the exception of "people like you shouldn't be near children" (a common queerphobic saying) and tweaking a few of Dr. Roger Huntoon's (the one with the glasses) lines. Just to demonstrate how a "conversion therapy" interpretation of the origin story is really plausible from the original text.
It's an artistic choice to silhouette and obscure the faces of the oppressors during the flashback scenes- as we wanted Remembrance to highlight and center Hellblazer's queer characters. John is remembering the people who matter the most to him.
In Remembrance, John went from being a non-conforming punk kid full of color and life to looking like he's aged 10 years when it's only been a couple of months. We wanted John's post-Ravenscar reveal to look tragic, like the joy has been sucked out of him. We pulled from Midnight Mass' Riley, a character who returns home after being imprisoned for a car crash that resulted in a girl's death. He parallels John's arc really well for this moment. Everything about his character design screams "average guy Going Through It", so I wanted to bring it over to John.
In terms of color, we kept a general rule that present day scenes were blue to represent sadness and grief, while the flashback scenes had warm colors. Red or purple represent violence in Ray's death scene and John's time in Ravenscar, but they also represent sexuality during Ray's drag performance- the flashback scenes tended to be warm for contrast. Yellow, as the brightest color, represented moments of comfort. So Ray comforting John after Ravenscar is bathed in sunlight.
[Top panel from Hellblazer #27]
"All he wanted was for someone to care about him. Someone to hold him."
We made sure to pace out this moment of kindness the same way John's canonical moment of kindness in Hold Me was paced. It's such a quiet and tender scene that encapsulates what Hellblazer is about. The world of Hellblazer is full of The Horrors and sometimes it's these humanizing simple actions that act as a resolution to those larger than life problems. Not the spectacle of magic or giant swords and fight scenes.
It's a shame that we all collectively forgot who wrote Hellblazer #27 Hold Me. But no seriously, I don't think it's fair that Hold Me is essentially the best celebration of Ray Monde as a queer Hellblazer character in canon. It's a beautiful story and it's written by someone who allegedly abused a real queer woman. It's about time That Writer didn't have the last say on these beloved characters.
Also for the record I know it would be impossible for John to be able to hold the jaws of a giant dog at bay but this is comics and we're here for the drama so just suspend your disbelief for me.
While the Church Grim being Johnny reveal was our idea, this bit where John explains that "Johnny the doggie was buried before Ray" came from Phoebe! So in folklore, The Church Grim is a dog that is buried (often alive) in a graveyard before any human. This tradition makes it so a dog spirit is left in charge of watching over the graveyard for eternity (instead of a human). In this case, because Johnny the doggie was buried before Ray, Johnny ended up bound to protecting Ray specifically (something his spirit was already more than willing to do).
[excerpt from Stone Butch Blues]
This moment where John reveals that "his community couldn't show up to Ray's funeral in the clothes that truly reflect who they are" is inspired by this scene from Stone Butch Blues. The main character and her friend attend the funeral of an elder butch who passed away. The butches were not permitted to show up unless they wore dresses, and so they did. Because community was so important to them. When the main character and her friend don't show up in dresses, the elder butches are furious at their betrayal. The funeral abruptly ends because of how the young butches showed up.
I thought this intercommunity generational queer tension was perfect for Remembrance, a story that already showcases the de-yassification of John's self expression after the trauma of Ravenscar. John's found new community with Xanthe, but there's jealousy, bitterness and envy that he harbors for assuming that Xanthe has it better as a younger queer person, so he lashes out. Xanthe's early comment about John being "...not usually this dressed up. For anything or anyone" suddenly has painful context.
[from Spirit World #2]
It's a tiny tweak from me, but Xanthe's line "the world turned its back on me when I brushed with death." in Remembrance was me leaving it open to interpretation for you to imagine something close enough to Xanthe's canon story while also giving myself room to re-imagine Xanthe's origin story. I'm on the fence with Xanthe being "half living-half dead" and thinking of having them be revived from death so the weird "they're dead but they still age but also immortal" thing doesn't convolute Xanthe's story.
Canonically, Xanthe's parents did care about their death, even if they expressed it in a flawed way. At least depending on the writer's mood anyway. At one point, Xanthe's mom somehow recognizes them after 15 years and lovingly invites them home for dinner. The family clearly has a small shrine set up for Xanthe's passing in the house. But sometimes this is flipped and apparently Xanthe's parents "stopped leaving flowers" after they had a new daughter.
Personally I think if Xanthe's theme as a hero is "fighting for the dead not to be forgotten" then a backstory that reflects how Xanthe knows what it's like to be forgotten would strengthen them as a character. We linked it back to real world instances of disappearances and deaths of trans people of color. These cases are hardly acknowledged and reported, so something similar happened to Xanthe when they "brushed with death".
[spliced panels from Spirit World #2]
Xanthe may be a younger queer person, they may be able to show up to a cemetery in a suit because of how things have progressed, but that doesn't mean they're naive. Xanthe's tired of being treated like they wouldn't know any better. A frustration many younger queer people feel from an older generation that dismisses their experiences. Maybe through John's outburst, it's John who failed to understand what it's like for queer people who don't look like him. That they can very much understand his pain.
Sure it's uncomfortable to acknowledge how race and generational differences make the queer community misunderstand each other. But if John Constantine is going to feel like a compellingly flawed character again, I think highlighting these tensions instead of erasing them should be part of that. The queer community isn't always how it looks in DC Pride Specials, sometimes we hurt each other without ever meaning to.
[from Hellblazer #6]
The final flashback scene was the hardest to color for. I knew I was going to recreate the iconic moment where John comforts Ray after Ray confides in his AIDS diagnosis to John, but the background colors are basically "black and white. Good luck, nerd!" So I went with the color theme we set up. This may be a flashback, but this is the saddest moment John has with Ray. So dark blue completely takes over the scene. But there's just a bit of warmth coming from the fire place. There's hope.
In canon, John holding Ray's shoulder is the end of their interaction and the last time they see each other alive. Reimagining these scenes with John as a queer man, this moment needed something more. During the AIDS crisis, the panic among queer men was palpable. Yet whenever one of their friends ended up with AIDS, there was this agonizing doubt and denial that "AIDS happened to other people- not my friends. It can't be." so I wanted John to have that reaction. This idea that his strongest pillar of support for a little over two decades is going to die, just breaks him.
[top two left panels are from Hellblazer #19. Top right panel from Hellblazer #27. Bottom left panels from Hellblazer #68. Bottom right panels from Hellblazer #27]
When I said this is a celebration of early Hellblazer's queer characters, I meant it! This series of memories includes the iconic scene where John holds gay journalist Simon Hughes' hand from the Fear Machine arc. Immensely tender moment. Also in Fear Machine are Harold and Ken, a gay couple who run a hotel in London together. In my desperate attempt to find any non-white early queer Hellblazer character, I included Jeff from Hold Me. We also have Davey, a sex worker friend with AIDS that John quickly befriends (and loses) during his Breakup Era. And lastly, Anthea from Hold Me. The iconic lesbian that tried to seduce John when she really could've just asked him to give her a baby. All together in a page, remembered.
This page was the very heart of Remembrance. It's our answer to re-contextualizing all of Hellblazer as a queer narrative. Ray explicitly recognizes John as a part of his community here, saying he notices that John has been "surviving" instead of "living" after Ravenscar. John's dressing more respectable than he once was, he hasn't dated a man in ages, he's afraid to be seen as anything that could get him into Ravenscar again. But Ray imparts a dying wish, and that's for John to keep living. To try anyway, even when the world dooms you. Now, all of the times John cheats death in Hellblazer is a continuation of that promise he made to Ray. To survive for a generation that couldn't.
Lastly! In the present day, John completes honoring Ray Monde's grave. Both through how Xanthe's culture mourns, and his own. John adds two red candles, as is customary in Chinese tradition. Similarly, you'd include offerings! Typically oranges, or apples, any kind of food offering. Audris says "nowadays I also see people put soda or whatever the person liked when they were alive." Naturally that means John is bringing The Good Drinkzzz. In Hellblazer #27, John says "He always loved a party, did Ray." so I don't think it's an out there choice, haha.
Early Hellblazer had horrifying supernatural plots, but it also had the most tender instances of John showing kindness to people he cared about. It's a lost aspect in so much of modern Hellblazer, so we wanted Remembrance to show that kind side of John again, all the way into the ending. He's the lead singer of Mucuous Membrane, so it's only fitting that he sings his own rendition of a song Ray sang to him long ago.
John Constantine has evolved in contentious directions as he's modernized. While it's great that he's properly recognized as a queer character, his sexuality is often flandarized, his roots to the working class punk and queer community is forgotten, and his edges sand papered off to be respectable. Modern acknowledgments to John's queerness often water it down to having him briefly (romantically or sexually) getting involved with a man. But queer stories are so much more than that. They're about families, they're about death, they're about survival, they're about friendships, even the difficult ones. So hopefully through this story, we can get a better idea of what's possible for a tonally authentic Hellblazer Pride story.

More spoiler thoughts on the allegory
I want to tread very carefully around this because it is a serious topic, but some of the subtler things are occurring to me about the Palestine-allegory in the episode.
Kid - the person planning the terrorist act is literally named Kid, and is explicitly explained to have been named this because his mother was killed before she could name him. I think how the episode delivered this was kind of clumsy, but I think it was a powerful choice to have this character - driven to extremes because his people have been genocided and then covered up - is Kid. Is a kid. This is a kid. A desperate kid. His actions are not being condoned, but they are put into a very clear context.
Cora's song - again, kind of clumsy (but very powerful scene; I almost cried). I think a surface interpretation of the scene is that it unfortunately kind of implied that the two choices were terrorism or benign appeal. BUT what I think it was /trying/ to say was this group of people need allies. It wasn't just that Cora revealed herself and self-advocated in a pretty dress, it was that the hosts undermined the corporation that was funding their spectacle by giving her screen time to appeal to 3 trillion people. It wasn't the end of the fight, but the start. And an indictment of the real song contest in our world that would never allow such a thing.
The Doctor torturing Kid - again, treading very cafefully here, but I think this is a second allegory within the episode. The Doctor, a member of a genocided group, taking his rage out on someone who has been disarmed. Not okay. And the narrative doesn't frame it as okay, regardless of what Kid was about to do. And more importantly, the narrative shows us that he needs someone to stop him. His actions are not okay and someone needed to stop him. Again, not perfectly presented, not a perfect allegory - and not meant to be a one-to-one allegory either, obviously. But I saw comments in the tags about how it was uncomfortable watching the doctor torture someone like that and - yes, it was. Because it was supposed to be.
I said in my other post that the episode was trying to be obvious and have plausible deniability at the same time, and I think that's a good thing. That's not the part that had issues. Because if it was OBVIOUS obvious, then you get things like Kill the Moon, and Kerblam!, and whatever that weird episode with Bill and the weird consent aliens were. If it was so on the nose as to be like these episodes, it would fail. You want the allegory to be imperfect, because in the gap is where you get the critique of the real world. Why does Rylan let Cora sing? Because the real Eurovision would never. Why does Belinda stop the Doctor? Because no one has stopped Israel. It just means in those gaps too, it's going to be clumsy, and that's where we can critique the episode too.
I hope this was respectful. Again, it's a very serious topic, and I wanted to approach it with that in mind. But I think my interpretations of these plot points are supported by the text, and therefore add to the point it's trying to make.
There's so much more in this episode to expand on too - we haven't even talked about the honey poppy thing, or the banning of Hellions from competing, or so many other little indictments of the Song Contest that mirror or reference the real world one. But those were the three things that have really jumped out at me that I haven't seen anyone really discuss, and I wanted to float the idea that maybe these things were on purpose, and that maybe in them we find a stronger thesis for the episode that what we see at first glance.

Let's get some things very straight (LOL) about that ICONIC Buddie argument last night.
Eddie WAS NOT the aggressor in this altercation. In fact, Buck was in a mood before Eddie even entered the kitchen. Eddie asked why Buck had gone grocery shopping when he had previously promised to do so himself. He was asking a question. Buck's whole demeanor suggested he was clearly bothered: "I was out. It's fine." Obviously a chippy response to which Eddie replied "It doesn't feel like it's fine." Because he knows Buck. And he obviously wasn't fine. Granted, Buck had reason to be upset: he was the last person to find out that Eddie had been offered the job in El Paso. Under normal circumstances, Buck would have been the first person to know.
However, these are obviously not normal circumstances. Bobby is dead. Eddie explains why he didn't tell Buck. His reasoning isn't because he believes Buck is selfish. Yes, Eddie is being petty here. It was kinda a shitty thing to say (although that might have been THE LINE of the year, so I am so glad that he said it), to which he later admits. However, his reasoning is a little deeper than that, and easy to discern if you listen to what he says: "You've been spiralling. Since the funeral. And no one knows how to talk to you about it."
This harkens back to Eddie's conversation with Hen and Karen earlier in the episode. Buck is presenting a façade that he is okay by trying to take care of everybody else, as Bobby requested of him. Asking weird ass grief questions. But the people who love him. The person who loves him, wants him to drop the act and actually process his own grief.
Add all of that, to the fact that Eddie is trying to process his own grief and one would understand Eddie's reaction to Buck stating (in an equally petty manner, I might add) "Sorry I'm sad that Bobby is dead." NO SHIT SHERLOCK! Note that in this instance, by saying that, Buck is explicitly thinking about his own feelings and not considering the feelings of his family who are also grieving. That is definitionally selfish. Eddie, rightly responds "You're not the only one that lost him! We all lost him." Because he is trying to let Buck know that the way to help is not through stupid psych evaluations; it is by talking about how each other is feeling.
Buck: "Yeah, I know."
Eddie: "Really? Because you never asked what it was like."
Eddie then proceeds to explain his emotions about Bobby's death.
And let's make it even more clear: Eddie WAS NEVER going to hit Buck. He would never hit Buck. He grabs his shoulder and points his little finger in his face. It's a call back to their grocery store altercation.
Unlike Buck, who puts up a façade as a way to avoid processing grief, Eddie's grief manifests as anger. That was the whole point of his street fighting plot line. He used fighting as a way to blow off steam. The problem with the street fighting wasn't that he was fighting: it was that he was doing so in an illegal underground ring. That story was never meant to characterize Eddie as a violent person. Because Eddie is not a violent person. He uses his passion for MMA as an outlet. Not everybody who knows MMA is a violent person. The opposite is actually true. Very few MMA fighters are violent people. It's an art. Just like dancing or figure skating.
Buck then apologizes to Eddie, acknowledging his TEMPORARY moment of selfishness. Eddie then expresses that he has yet to forgive himself for not being there.
"If I was there, could I have made a difference."
Buck misinterprets this statement as Eddie believing that Buck didn't do everything he could to save Bobby's life.
That's not what Eddie is saying at all. What he does say in response is
"I don't know Buck. I wasn't there."
Eddie hates that he wasn't there to save Bobby's life. Which is a large, and understandable, part of his grief.
The whole theme of this conversation is that these two are not communicating. Had they done so, they would not be upset at each other. Obviously, it is hard to effectively communicate during times of grief. So in reality, both Buck and Eddie are at fault here. Both have valid motivations behind their words and actions here. This is what grief does. It makes you act irrationally or out of character.
Yet, their miscommunication pre-existed Bobby's death: It started when Eddie decided to leave for El Paso. And the reason they were not communicating then is because neither of them understand or want to admit their feelings regarding the move. These feelings are that of love, which neither party is willing to admit yet. Yet.
Next week might be the first opportunity for either of them to voice those feelings.
