I started a new job today, and 2 days in, I realized I am basically doing the Magnus Protocol job. Just with current news. And instead of the night, we work in the ungodly hours of the morning.

insomnia is terrible. here’s thoughts on my recent kdrama binge, under the cut:

Signal (2016): It’s been over a month and I can confidently say I hated the last ~45minutes because they feel like the narrative equivalent of a long loading screen for a program you didn’t mean to boot up in the first place - it’s not the worst ending for a show I’ve ever seen (see Black, down below), but it did both feel like a cop-out and ... hmm. like my faith in the characters was seriously misplaced. Which is a shame! Cop-show/copaganda aside, both the overarching plot (the disappearance of Detective Lee Jae Han fifteen years ago)/plot preoccupations (political corruption, socio-economic stratification and the complicity of the police in reinforcing class barriers/defending the wealthy and powerful at the cost of the poor and powerless) and the individual mysteries that the characters past and present struggle to resolve were interesting and satisfactorily dealt with; the magic plot device of a radio that allowed Lieutenant Park Hae Young in 2015 to communicate with Lee Jae Han in the past (1989-2000) was ultimately far more compelling than it had any right to be. It feels like a long meditation on grief, at times, and how grief both rots and compels. I ugly cried so hard into my cat she sought revenge by dropping a spider in my bed, and I’m still not sure if that’s a recommendation. 

Crash Landing on You (2020): as unlikely and ideologically irresponsible (South Korean heiress accidentally ends up in a North Korean village via paragliding accident, winds up in the middle of convoluted political plots as often as she does small-town hijinx, in no small part because she totally isn’t in love with the emotionally-shut-down-but-kind-Army-Captain; alas, those troubles (but! some of her new friends, too!) follow her when she returns to South Korea and her awful family) as it was ultimately charming. This was billed to me as “a fun romantic comedy” to take my mind off the mindfuck of Signal’s ending, which might have been a mislabeling, considering politics, that the main relationship hinges in small part on the male lead inadvertently preventing the female lead from killing herself seven years before the narrative picks up, and there was no way, short of reunification of North and South, that things would end totally happily for the characters. Serotonin is stored in the abundant found family/true companions scenes, but we can’t have nice things for long. Watch with tissues.

Kingdom (2019-): I spent a significant chunk of this dry-heaving, or biting my nails, or hiding under my quilt. Quality zombie drama that also made me cry my own tears, tightly written, but I’m too squeamish and too worn out by 2020 to enjoy this fully.

Mystic Pop Up Bar (2020): sometimes, a family is a bad-tempered 500 year-old cursed pop-up bar owner, her pun- and grandpa-sweater-loving manager with a long and mysterious supernatural past, their turbo-empath busboy who can’t touch normal people without them spilling their deepest secrets, and the single braincell they have to share between them as they struggle to solve ordinary human’s grudges to satisfy the terms of the curse on the owner. For all that the action is pretty light-hearted, the characters’ backstories are weighted down with trauma, abandonment, betrayal and suicide; the grudges of the episode also deal with heavy stuff (workplace sexual harassment, infertility, the cycle of poverty, to name a few). But this is also a show where there’s a field-day in the afterlife for the dead to compete at ridiculous tasks to win the privilege of appearing to their descendants with the winning lottery numbers, the gods accidentally text the wrong numbers, Steve Jobs apparently digitalized reincarnation records, and threatening deities with baseball bats sometimes works wonders (and if that doesn’t work, annoying the shit out of them might do the trick). It doesn’t explain itself and, frankly, I don’t give a damn. Absurd and absurdly charming. I watched it and then immediately forced my sister to watch it again with me; I have a gallery of out-of-context screenshots of this show that watered my crops, cleared up my acne, and killed my enemies.

Black (2017): Honestly, when I figure out what the fuck just happened in the ending, I’ll let you know. I wanted this show to be better than it was, because the premise hit a lot of my buttons, and I wanted to be swept up in a story about life and death (and whatever comes next), and whether being human is in the ability to laugh or enjoy food or make irrational mistakes, or whether it’s in the bigger things: the wanting to be better and the ability to be so much worse, and what the opposite of human is? A woman with the ability to see the shadow of death on those about to die gets swept up in a sprawling web of corruption and abuse when she encounters a childhood friend by accident in a fast-food restaurant, only to see him killed him a hostage situation a day later. He gets better, thanks to possession by a Grim Reaper with his own agenda, but the Reaper’s involvement (and struggles to act human) reveals hitherto buried secrets in the woman’s past. It’s ... grim. Really grim. The web of mysteries is pretty tightly woven, and the show uses unreliable narrators for everything the trope is worth, but the characters and most of their relationships ultimately feel like they fall short of their potential to me, in a way it’s hard for me to articulate? Generally, the female characters felt underwritten and under-utilized; there’s a posthumous trans woman character who’s especially not handled well (better than some, but still felt transphobic to this cis observer). Honestly can’t recommend, unless you, too, can’t resist narratives about grim-reaper-archetypes, or you enjoy being infuriated by nonsense endings. OST’s pretty great, though.

Currently watching Mr. Sunshine (2018) with friends. pray 4 me.

Fallout New California Mod Evaluation

The day has lastly come and gone - we now live in a globe with multiplayer Fallout at our fingertips. Typically in a Fallout game you would encounter numerous diverse factions of humans, and other-than humans who give you quests, tasks, or are intractable in other approaches. how do you make poses for the roof? i'm not sure how i can know if the sims will clip into the roof or float

honestly i just...eyeball it...because all roofs are different and you can’t put them into blender so. i just winged it lmao...i just made a pose that looked like it could’ve been lou climbing out the window, only the rig was still ground level, and then i used alt + 9 to lift the teleporter onto the roof as best as i could. that’s why it probably wouldn’t be a very practical pose to release, because i have no way of making it easy to use

i don’t know if i’ll be able to replicate the reshade effect totally but i could release the action i’ve made for myself? it warms up screenshots but is totally adjustable to your liking for different color tones so in that way it’s kinda similar to the reshade. i’ll seeeeee what i can do...i know the woes of mac users all too well, my friend

Are chickens smart? And can you train them? New studies refute an old reputation and prove how remarkable these birds really are!

Are Chickens Smart? Assessing Trainability

“Chickens are super smart and really fun to train,” Amy Robinson, Manager of Wildlife Shows at the Dallas Zoo, recently told me.

I fully agree as, keeping chickens as pets, I have trained them to cooperate in their own husbandry. While working at different zoos, I trained chickens to perform in free flight bird shows. Although chickens were often the butt of the joke, they were also some of the most reliable birds I worked with and training a chicken isn’t difficult.

“They can be trained to do anything that they can physically do,” Robinson says. “They can push things, pull things, run from point A to point B, stand on a station, crow on cue, turn in a circle, scratch the ground on cue, come when called … the possibilities are only limited by your own imagination.”

But are chickens smart? Do they have true cognitive abilities? Can chickens process related knowledge? Do they have the attention, working memory, judgment, and evaluating and reasoning skills to be called intelligent? Have you ever tried to reason with a��chicken?

Organisms have evolved to suit their environment, so they can find shelter, mates and food. With that in mind, how would someone measure intelligence across species, let alone within a species?

I think it’s pretty difficult to gauge intelligence in animals,” Erin Katzner, CertifiedProfessional Bird Trainer-knowledge assessed (CPBT-KA), estimates. “That being said, I would call chickens very trainable.” Katzner has trained quite a few chickens, and she says they have all been tremendous fun.

“Most of my chickens were simply trained for A to B runs during a show, but I worked with one Mille-Fleur chicken named Penny who was trained to sit on an open palm for display during education programs and events,” Katzner says, who also trains types of pigeons.

“Along the same lines, I love training pigeons. I trained a blue-crowned pigeon named Liberace to ‘disappear’ during a silly ‘magic trick,” Katzner adds. Liberace was trained to run off the back of the stage when Katzner would lift the magic curtain in front of him. “The joke was that the audience could see him run away, but I pretended like I was an amazing magician who just made him disappear. Kids loved it and it’s a routine that could easily be done with a trained chicken as well.”

“One of the most common comments from the public is, ‘Wow, I didn’t know you could even train a chicken,’” Ryne Ferguson, Supervisor and Assistant Reserve Manager for the Kwa-Zulu Natal Crane Foundation in South Africa said. “Chicken training can be very rewarding just like any other training. Using trained chickens can really help with the education of children and adults alike.”

Ferguson has been an animal trainer for 10 years and has been training chickens professionally for three. “People really seem to connect with chickens and even trainers seem to really understand training better after training a chicken. Chickens are great training teachers for new trainers,” he adds.

Dr. Karen Davis, President of United Poultry Concerns, has kept chickens since 1985.  “Throughout history, chickens have been admired and respected by various cultures under varying circumstances,” Dr. Davis says. Observers like Renaissance author Aldrovandi, she says, “have written eloquently, appreciatively and informatively about chickens.” He and others have particularly admired the parenting of both hens and roosters in their nurturing care, she adds.

In the Victorian era, chicken-keepers admired the family life and devoted domesticity of their chickens. Dr. Davis estimates the preconceived notion that chickens are unintelligent developed in the mid-20th century: “As the industrialization of chickens and turkeys was consolidated, the industry promoted the idea through advertising that chickens are stupid.”

Professor Annie Potts, Co-Director of the New Zealand Centre for Human-Animal Studies, agrees that industrialization and intensive farming have radically changed our views of chicken-kind. “Although those who live with their own flocks of chickens will understand how remarkable these birds truly are,” she says.

She believes that the idea of chickens being unintelligent can be traced to two key biases. “We tend to perceive species similar in appearance to us as being more mindful and aware; the greater the physical difference between humans and other creatures, the more likely we are to view those beings as driven merely by instinct or impulse,” Dr. Potts says.

She adds that we’re also influenced by something known as the “small-brain fallacy,” the assumption that tiny things just can’t be intelligent or aware. “This prejudice relies, in turn, on accepting that the cerebral cortex — the large, convoluted portion of the human brain — is the site of — intelligence’ for all creatures,” she says.

“Because this anatomical structure is insubstantial in birds, chickens and many other birds are presumed to be ‘simpleminded,” Dr. Potts explains. She also points out that birds, including chickens, have a different structure in the brain that is well developed, called the hyperstriatum, which is used in navigation when flying.

Since we lack this part in our brain, this would imply that chickens are smarter than us in navigation. When was the last time you navigated or flew without a GPS or plane?

“Anyone who lives with chickens, free-ranging unrestricted birds, will be aware of how complex their lives actually are — the various relationships they form with each other, the ways they communicate, how they behave in different situations, their curious modes or play, their pleasures and dislikes,” Dr. Potts says.

Are Chickens Smart? Refuting a Reputation

“As for species comparisons, all I can say, in brief, is that if a species is living, mating, reproducing and successfully raising its young, if the members are active and alert in the environment, they must be adapted and smart enough to do so,” Dr. Davis calculates.

A species needs to acclimatize effectively to its environment by being cognizant, vigilant and aware of what relates to its well-being and by being quick to act effectively to threats as they arise, Dr. Davis says. Domestic chickens have been around, conservatively, for at least 9,000  years, so they seem to be relatively smart. Although domesticated, they still must possess a certain cognitive ability that allows them to adapt to changing conditions.

“Chickens often perceive humans as predators, so we see them when they are panicking and alarm calling. No one looks their best under these circumstances,” Dr. K-Lynn Smith says. Dr. Smith, a Research Fellow at Macquarie University, works in the Department of Biological Science, in Sydney, Australia. She focuses on researching communication among chickens.

“People who keep poultry often have a better understanding of the chicken’s abilities, even if they don’t know exactly what they are seeing,” Dr. Smith says. “They know that their birds come when there’s food and are smart enough to come home at night.”

“What animals communicate to each other and to their predators can tell us much about their understanding of the world,” Dr. Smith says. “I think the most remarkable thing is their adaptability.”

She has observed that chickens are able to learn fairly quickly and apply this knowledge to new situations. “They are also able to change their behavior to suit the situation. Their communication is also amazing. It’s more complex than that of some primates.”

Since no one has developed a crossspecies IQ test yet, Dr. Smith says scientists rely on proxies, like the ability to innovate and problem-solve.

An experiment you can do at home, Dr. Smith says, is to train your birds to find food under specific shapes. If you gather a circle toy and a star toy, you could always put food under one and not the other. Let the birds watch you at the start. Continue doing so until they stop checking the one without food.

“Then just start putting out the shapes with no food, so it can’t be smell or sight. You’ll see that the birds have worked out which one has food, and which one doesn’t,” Dr. Smith says.

For Dr. Potts’s 2012 book, Chicken, she studied the social lives, modes of communication, emotional behaviors, and cognition of chickens. “I had not realized they made sense of their environment visually via snapshots, or that they had such remarkable panoramic vision,” Dr. Potts says. She learned that they’re able to look forward to eat off the ground, while keeping an eye outward on what’s happening in the distance, in order to stay safe. “I was also delighted by the fact that they can remember over a hundred different faces of other chickens.”

What she also discovered is that they can also remember human faces, and for a long time. Other studies she found show that newly hatched chicks are able to quickly accomplish skills, such as object permanence, that human infants take a couple of years to achieve.

Chickens are also capable of referential learning. This is a type of learning where different calls mean different things. One call will signal an aerial predator, while another means terrestrial predator.

“Science has unfortunately developed a very anthropocentric (rather than biocentric) perspective on ideas like intelligence,” Dr. Potts says. “Smartness is totally relative. Chickens are smart in ways uniquely chicken. Their ‘intelligence’ shouldn’t be measured against or compared to human intelligence (or vice versa).” she exclaims.

Metacognitive Caregivers

Now that you are thinking about chicken thinking, you might be asking yourself, how can I enrich my chicken’s environment? How do I fulfill my complex chicken’s cognitive ability?

Dr. Potts encourages poultry caregivers to continue doing research on how chickens view the world. She encourages caregivers to provide them with ample space, gentle challenges and treats. She says flock size is important since they are happier living in smaller flocks, like they do in nature. “Chickens also love novelty and are very curious — they like to be involved in what’s going on.”

Actually, thanks to the Japan Anniversary Association and the easy-to-use search tool on their website, I believe I’ve come up with some suitable alternate celebration programming for the really, really die-hard Japanophiles.

For example, 14 Feb is Car Insurance Day. Loose partial translation:

Established by the Tokio Marine Nichidou Fire Insurance Corporation. On 14 Feb 1914 (Taishou 3), the company, then the Tokio Marine Insurance Corporation, received the first sales authorisation for car insurance in Japan, with the idea that ‘every day with humans and cars should feel safe’.

Fun titbit: The same company recently became the first Japanese vehicle insurer to cover accidents involving self-driving cars.

14 Mar: Aside from March being Life Insurance Review Month, 14 Mar specifically happens to be ... Seppuku Monaka Day.

25 May: Well, you could celebrate Terminator Day, marking the day that the first movie premiered in Japanese cinemas. But frankly, doesn’t Bessho Line Day sound far more interesting to you? The Bessho Line is a small rail line connecting downtown Ueda to a hot springs area, and the date is actually taken from the Type 5250 trains (image via here) that used to operate on that line. Look at those tiny round windows!

4 Jul: Nanashii Day! Again: homophones!

What, you don’t know what Nanashii is? Well, that’s fine! It’s perfectly fine with the Toyomaru Industry Corporation of Nagoya, because—well, you see, the day is meant to promote the company’s Nanashii series of pachinko machines.

Yes, pachinko. The Japan Anniversary Association is perfectly fine assigning a day for pachinko PR.

Whichever is less confusing to you. Seriously, though, look at that mascot’s profile—name, height, birth date and place, talents ... all that’s missing is blood type. But it does get more and more weirdly adorable as you look at it.

Bamboo Leaf Fish Cake Day, or, if you’re feeling less rote-translation-minded, Sasa-kamaboko Day. It’s grilled fish cake in the shape of bamboo leaves. Kind of cheating listing this separate from Tanabata, because the only reason this day is even on this date is because Tanabata and bamboo are heavily connected. In fact, you might say that a lot about Tanabata hangs on bamboo. Get it? Get ... I’ll get me coat.

Mary’s Summer Valentine Day. Erm. What? Eek, another holiday riding on the tailcoats of Tanabata. And this time, even more explicitly marketing-driven! Move along.

Two other marketing holidays tied to the romantic aspects of Tanabata—one that I literally cannot translate in any other way than Love Day or Day of Love, and, erm ... Love Soumen Day? Yes, there’s a love-themed brand of Japanese noodles. It looks disgusting. Probably actually decent noodles, though.

25 Dec: Pudding Day!

Established by Ohayou Dairy Corporation, based in Okayama, Okayama Prefecture, maker of milk, processed milk, milk beverages, yoghurt, and other dairy products. Designated because of its many popular pudding products.

Actually, as with Vegetable Day, it falls on the 25th of every month (yet again due to a convoluted pun that doesn’t remotely translate into English)—so no, nobody intentionally went up against Christmas here.

It’s actually the same story with Boxing Day, where Sunsweet of Japan established a Prune Day for the 26th of every month. Nobody designated anything specifically for the 25th or 26th of December. Kind of surprised, really, considering all the crowding around Gregorian Tanabata.

In conclusion: does anyone know of any other examples of these anniversary associations? I desperately want to search through to find out who’s paying these kinds of people all that money to get something on some calendar, somewhere, possibly, but in countries that are not Japan.
