Thank you! I wanted to find a way to incorporate Lincoln’s legendary cheekbones. I referenced popular skinny boys like Chalamet and Young Pattinson.

In animation, they have to draw the characters so many times over, it makes sense that Abe and JFk’s faces are basically blocks. Low pencil mileage!

Since I only have to draw the original characters once per panel, I was able to give them a little more detail though early on I abandoned too many accessories or patterned clothes. I'll take the easy road every time!

Do you think Katherine Howard lied during interrogation? Regarding her coercion by Francis Dereham or her relationship with Thomas Culpeper

almost certainly she lied — or at least didn’t tell the full truth — henry, himself, felt she had not told the whole truth: “she hath not, as appeareth by her confession, so fully declared the circumstances of such communications as were betwixt her and culpeper”, for example. she had obvious incentive to lie. but it’s impossible to know exactly what she lied about.

the obvious answer is that there was clearly somebody who was lying with regards to who initiated what. several anomalies are present in the testimonies between katherine, culpeper, jane. one example is the matter of the bracelets culpeper says katherine gave to him (“the queen sent him two bracelets with this message that they were sent him to keep his arms warm”), while katherine says the bracelets were sent by jane — “my lady rocheford prayed hir [katherine] she myght bye sumwhat to send hym and of hir own choyse bought a payer of brayselettz to send hym”. possibly katherine was lying and blaming jane for her own actions, but equally possibly katherine was telling the truth, and culpeper was misrepresenting it, knowingly or not — perhaps he misconstrued the bracelets and message as a gift from katherine delivered to him by jane, instead of from jane, directly. more broadly, it’s reasonable to assume that katherine threw jane under the bus, to some extent, but equally jane was willing to cast herself as a victim to katherine’s will. culpeper casts katherine as pursuing him, while katherine claims culpeper and jane approached her. if katherine didn’t lie, or at least twist the truth and evade answering fully, somebody did. more reasonably, i think they probably all failed to give objective answers based on a combination of lying, psychological pressure, and the limitations of memory — especially when under duress.

more specifically, i personally think she lied when she claimed dereham raped her — the detail came out of nowhere, and was not corroborated by any other testimony. she does not repeat the claim in any other surviving source. that is not to suggest that there is no chance that dereham may have been abusive or forceful; his behaviour otherwise could be read as controlling, or possessive. to that end we could accept katherine’s claim that dereham let himself into her chamber “but never at [her] request, nor consent”, since joan bulmer also testified that dereham would visit the maiden’s chamber “between four or five of the clock in the morning”. it’s also possible that katherine’s understanding of consent may have been complicated by youth, trauma impacting memory, and the terror of the context in which she divulged this information. all those nuances are now unknowable to us. the popular understanding of sexual assault in katherine’s time necessitated resistance, and that katherine may have been coerced by an older man, one whom she seems to have relied upon to keep manox at bay, after already relenting and permitting manox’s touching her body intimately… it’s reasonable to assume that katherine, and/or her peers, would not have accepted that she was a victim of sexual assault. it’s possible that katherine claimed she was raped, thinking she was lying about it, according to the values of her time, over a sexual relationship we would nowadays recognise as sexual assault. or possibly this was simply a girl lying about assault to save herself — a ruthlessness prompted by the pressure she was under. whatever complicated feelings katherine may have had about her relationship with dereham, if she even got the chance to realise and process them in her short lifetime, went up the scaffold with her.

Fanfic / fan author ask game: 5 and 30 please ✨✨

I'm finding this months later, I'm so sorry. Somehow I forgot that the "Inbox" was a thing? Oops.

Anyway, if I remember well it was for this Ask meme! (Hopefully I remember well, or I'll just be answering the wrong questions... oops².)

5. What’s something you learned while researching a fic?

I learnt MANY things while researching for stories! But I think the most impactful was when I was researching for my Narumitsu magnum opus, Ardebat Sed Non Comburebatur. The story is an AU (that ends partially rooted in canon by the end) in which Phoenix Wright is an actual phoenix, the immortal firebird. He lives through different eras, all of them quite cruel, and I ended up researching a lot about how people have tortured/killed other people throughout the ages. This was... disturbing. French wikipedia has a particularly complete page on execution methods. It made me a little sick. I actually had to get away from the computer for a while after reading about the death of Joan of Arc : they burnt her three times, and the description is particularly gruesome.

ANYWAY I also learnt something very important: it's extremely dangerous to research too much. First, because you learn this type of facts that you'd rather ignore. And second, because all this time spent researching is spent NOT writing! Researching and accuracy is important, but it shouldn't be detrimental to the actual writing of the story. I made this mistake a lot and I'm trying to get better now. (It's hard.)

30. Have you noticed your style change over time?

Not really in the past 10 years. 10 years ago, my style underwent a MASSIVE change when I decided I wanted to improve my writing of (original) short stories (in French.) I worked a lot on that, and at some point tried to write one short story per week. It made my storytelling easier to read, I think, by trying to follow the rule of Keep It Simple Stupid. No super long sentence. Jump into the mind of the character. Add TONS of indirect speech. Hook the reader in and make him feel. "Show don't tell". All that stuff.

Then I tried writing many different things. I had my "Daily Shorts" in English for a while, one micro-story a day on Instagram, which forced me to be super efficient in my wording and the way I set scenes. I had my blog in French for everything stream of consciousness.

Moving to fanfiction probably impacted my style, because you don't write the same when you use someone else's universe. You don't need as much time to set the scene: your readers know what's happened, who the characters are. You can just jump in. I wouldn't be able to say how my style changed!

That said, I'm afraid I haven't read enough different things in the past ten years. So while my style still changes over the kind of things I write (and the language in which I write them) I'm afraid it has stagnated a little "in general". Maybe it's just that I settled for something I'm comfortable with. It wouldn't take much to kickstart new exercises in style, but that's not something I'm tempted to do right now. I'm definitely keeping it for later writing adventures though!

I mentioned this one a bit in my last answer but hands down my favourite essay collection is the anthropocene reviewed by john green! I highly recommend the whole book and specifically the essays on Auld Lang Syne and Sunsets.

I honestly just started reading essay collections so I don’t really have that many other things I could recommend. I’m planning on reading The White Album by Joan Didion and I’ve heard that one’s really good (I’ve read one essay from it and I really liked it so I have high hopes). I’ve so far mostly read individual essays; and I highly recommend Why Aren’t You Laughing by David Sedaris and Rapunzel, Draft One Thousand by Sabrina Orah Mark.

YES EXACTLY! And for me a big thing is the caring but also genuine enjoyment. Idk if you’ve seen Parks and Recreation but it’s the “I love you and I like you” of it all! And I think that there’s also the fact that her being the savior is so so present in all of her relationships. Like I love her dynamics with henry and with her parents, but henry brought her to Storybrooke because he wanted her to break the curse more than he wanted her to be his mom at the very beginning, and snow and david both made the choice to have her be the savior (I’m not criticising these characters for that btw but like it undeniably is a factor in their relationships that they do see her as the savior) and in my opinion killian never really sees her as “The Savior” he knows her as emma and sees savior as just a role that she has to fulfill not her whole person (once again not sure if that was even a coherent explanation of my thoughts but im sure you get the general idea at least)

As for my favourite quotes, I have a lot for different reasons: I love the “We were never a predestined love story garaunteed a happy ending, we fought for our love and we won” from the season 6 finale (even though I didn’t really like that episode or season as a whole that scene was so good) because I think it’s such a good description of their relationship

And then for ones that they’re actually saying to each other, I love the “There’s not a day that’ll go by that I won’t think of you” “Good.” from the season 3 midfinale, and sort of in the same vein of the liking smaller moments thing, I love “it’s my job, well at least I hope it’s my job, to protect your heart” from when they’re talking over the whole snow and david malificent’s daughter thing in season 4.

The Case for Elementary

For @bcbdrums cuz I’ve a bunch to say and I don’t think it will all fit in a reply. 

Now, I will straight up say that I’ve never seen BBC Sherlock, both were on around the same time and Elementary was bad-mouthed by a lot of Sherlock fans because of the decision to make Watson a woman (Oh noes, the woke agenda or something close to it, yada yada) but it works; sometimes Sherlock can be a bit abrasive and he needs a softer touch to talk to people, Joan is that touch.

It’s a procedural, sure but a lot of episodes do draw from the stories (The Baskervilles one is well done) the most interesting thing to me is the dynamic between the characters. 

From what I gather from BBC Sherlock, it is made out that he is always in the right, even though he’s a bit of a loon sometimes and doesn’t fully explain how he comes to his conclusions. Also do they mention his drug use much in Sherlock? From what I gather, not really? Only a couple of times? Answer if you know people reading! In Elementary, they lean on it a lot, you really see the man going through it and I think it gives him more depth.

Well, I hear you say the non-British setting? Okay so they’re in New York and it’s fine, the cops they work with are quite nice and it’s not like we never go back to the UK, we go there; other characters are in it too; Mycroft, Sherlock’s dad, LeStrade, they’re all there! To me this version of Sherlock is the epitome of ✨character growth✨ He learns from his experiences (omg, smartest man learning something?! The audacity) 

Well, is it bogged down with ship stuff? I know the majority of people ship Holmes/Watson in the BBC one and felt like they were very the Q word by it, I can’t attest to that but I know people were ‘That’s why they made Watson a woman!’ yeeah, not a thing. If you squint maybe it’s a thing in this one but mostly they’re just friends, friends are nice.

You're dead: its about vampires and is the title song to my favorite movie which is about vampires...how could I not?

Bad guy: ohhhhh boy you're gonna see a lot of Billie. So first of all the line "creeping around like no one knows" omg Simon following him. I felt this is also a good song for Baz's love for Simon that he hides behind a wall of cruelty and thus making himself the bad guy. And that end bit is absolutely Baz taunting Simon.

Broken boy: This song is really good at portraying Baz's hate for being a vampire and constantly diminishing his experiences, hence the lines "broken boy, how does it feel?" and "tell me why I'm forced to live in this skin" there's also a line that mentions vampire so I felt that tied it all together

Right so first couple verses and chorus omg Baz to a T!! The don't ask questions verse is straight up just "don't ask me if I'm a vampire. You don't want to know the answer. And I know i shouldn't talk to you"

The little grammar joke is just, Baz being a smarty pants

Too late to say goodbye: this is kind of a play of Baz's love for Simon but dislike of seeing him so depressed and awaiting the end, its "too late to say goodbye" for Baz, he's in too deep.

Drift away Omnichord: so yes, this is a Steven universe song, but the Omnichord cover has the echoey vibes I wanted. And just genderbend the song to be male and its Baz in WS, case, and point,

Lovers' eyes: oh boy howdy this is actually the song that made me want to make a Baz playlist. The lyrics in this are just so close to Baz and the pain in the singer's voice really adds to it. It really shows how Baz is looking back on his relationship and being sad yet still feeling like "I would still die for him, here are some lines that really show it.

AAAAAAA!! I'm delighted that you're enjoying my AU content! It's been such a pleasant experience so far to be able to share my headcanons and ideas this openly. I honestly didn't think that anyone would enjoy it besides myself,, But here we are! Thank you for the compliments, I hope the characters will remain interesting to you as I continue to develop them further. ^^

Honestly, I had planned to keep Xanthan's past a secret until I finished his full design reference sheet but what the hell, I'll share it now! Also, about your tired expression remark, that's just how I draw my traumatized characters lmao,, Anyways back to his past, this is a shortened version of his backstory but it's still a bit' long. It gives the answer to how he turned from an alternate to an angel. Hope you enjoy the read!

Created by Alternate Gabriel during the ongoing world war in 1942. The overlord took this as an opportunity to make steady and quiet progress on its plans to corrupt humanity. Xanthan, although nameless at the time, and a few other alternates were scattered around the United States. Specifically, in the old Bythorne county.

The task was simple: replace a human and become a doppelganger. His target was a lonely art shop owner whose business struggled. Xanthan did his task well, tormenting the poor fellow for a while until something had distracted him. Curiosity had taken over instead. First, it started with when the owner took breaks to paint art pieces in their private workshop, right above the store. He'd follow and watch them silently. There was something captivating about the way their brush moved, the vivid colors drawn on the canvas put him in awe. Later on, he took notice of the regular customers who'd come in every so often. One though, caught his attention. A lady named Joan Lavigne, a painter who lived with her older brother. However, he didn't interact with the women, just stared from a distance. Eventually, the owner was ordered to help with the war efforts. Their shop was neglected with an alternate roaming the place. Xanthan had failed his task, stalling for too long. His target never came back home. 

One day, Joan came in unexpectedly while he was out in the open, looking around the shop. Expecting high-pitched screaming, she had no reaction, she greeted him as if he were the owner. Utterly confused, only then he realized that she could not see him. Or anything at all, she was blind. It had never occurred to him before until he had a closer look at her. From that point on, they slowly bonded over their fascination for art. This relationship raised many confusing emotions over the years, none that he had felt before. Sooner or later, he had to confess what he actually was, yet Joan didn't care. Both of them had developed deeper feelings and became romantically involved with each other. Unfortunately, Gabriel was informed about his affairs and soon confronted him. Insulted, they disowned him and warmed about the consequences of such treachery. After that, he was on high alert, doing what he could to protect his loved one at all costs. They were targeted by other alternates and Gabriel, oftentimes they lived in hide-out.

This relationship peaked the interest of the archangel Raphael, angel of healing. He had never seen an alternate display this kind of affection towards a human and began frequently visiting them. The thought of Xanthan possibly being redeemable was brought up. Gabriel had other plans for the traitor. They could not let one of his underlings be redeemed by his enemies, they had no choice but to take matters into their own hands. They finally decided to go for Joan and infected them with severe M.A.D then went for him next. Distraught at the death of Joan, Xanthan wasn't going to let her lifeless body become corrupt. Head-to-head with the overlord, he put up quite the fight. Proclaiming outrage right at the face of his creator.

As their confrontation reached its end, Xanthan had been forgiven by God and was granted a blessing. God accepted him as one of their own and turned him into an angel. Gabriel witnessing him be redeemed, set them into a blinding rage to say the least. Their everlasting smile dropped for the first time. But with the help of Raphael and the other remaining archangels, he managed to survive the overlord's wrath and properly hid Joan's body to rest peacefully. Since then Xanthan has swore his loyalty to heaven and God, helping their archangels and spreading the influence of redemption onto cordial alternates around the earth.

Spends most of their time alone and other people might find them intimidating but once you get to know them they are actually incredibly kind and an extremely loyal friend. The character that the main character befriends and teaches them that other people are idiots and you shouldn’t care what they think. Or maybe the character that was once a villain but has been adopted by a group of heroesos they still have their villain side and enjoy getting into trouble every now and then but now they have a group of friends they care about and are protective over, they might not admit they are a big softy cause on the outside they are calm and cool but lord help anyone who tries to hurt their friends.
