I know the classic “take care of a pet so you remember to take care of yourself” choice is a dog but tell me you can’t imagine Mithrun really vibing with a tattered old tomcat,

I point and laugh at the foot fetish pages (Weren't you raised by elves? Can't you sing? Anything else as a first idea?) but it's just me disguising how it wounds me. Mithrun is convinced that he's dependent on magic or drugs to fall asleep, and it's so immediately disproven. It gives me the impression those methods were the elves' first idea, and it worked, so they kept doing it and he now believes it's necessary. He evidently can't even do it to himself. He believes he's dependent on this cold, utilitarian solution.

It makes me wonder about how he perceives himself and his situation, and how he reports it to people. It's a good early insight into reasons Kabru will tell him he's full of shit later.

Kabru is a stranger at this point, basically, so he doesn't have those assumptions about him. He just does what he'd do for anyone else, which is to just. Put him somewhere warm and make him feel comfortable and safe.

What's it like to be spared death by people who won't even do that for you?

So the (fanmade! sorry for the confusion) full name for Kabru, Kabru of Utaya, follows the elf nobility name format "[forename] of [family]" (e.g. Mithrun of the House of Kerensil, Pattadol of the House of Vari)

Which I think presents quite an interesting hypothetical scenario where Milsiril chose that particular form. Milsiril is herself from a noble family (Milsiril of the House of Tol), and having adopted Kabru he could've been named thus (Kabru of the House of Tol), but the idea means... something to me, where she might have chosen deliberately to keep Utaya in his name.

Utaya is clearly a core component in Kabru's identity, and regardless of her other shortcomings as an adoptive mother, you never see Milsiril try to override or replace that. Simultaneously, she still names him in the noble format, which also serves almost as a status symbol. Given that many elves look down on short-lived species, that feels kind of important.

(To be fair, there'd be other possible reasons for that (Milsiril's estrangement from her family, Kabru not being of actual noble blood, elven prejudices, Kabru's own preference), but something I was thinking about. Milsiril and Kabru's relationship is very interesting to me.)
