However, I wanted to focus specifically on indie games only. I got my start in games as a journalist in the Flash era, and there was such an incredible array of creativity and passion on display. please for the love of god can someone help me fing this fucking game it was on either kongregate or cool math games and you play as this wierd thing. this heinous creature. this atrocious vermin. this absoloute cretin. this fucking fucker.(approximate recreation of it by me using piskel. the game doesnt use pixel art but piskel has a circle tool and flamepainter pro doesnt)

mechanics/gimmicks:

the mechaninc is that you can switch between different versions of the map that looked really different but had mostly the same base geometry(ie house/house shaped block in the same place in most of them or a wall that blocks you not being there in a different version) and you find a thing(i think it was an eye but im not sure) in them to unlock the next version and your eye changes colour depending on where you are(the pictureis the eye in the first area) i remember that the ui you click on to switch between them was a little inventory bar with eyes in it that matched the colour your eye changes to

levels

the first level/area ispurely black and white and theres no detail, just black shapes you can jump over and the second one is a beach and i remember there being a lighthouse that was a pain to get through and also a beached pirate ship i dont remember the order of the rest but i know theres an anime one with a giant tower of test tubes in it for some reason and a video game one where the pirate ship from the sea one was a magic flying ship in the sky there was also a one where there were a ton of plants and trees and there was a vineyard or whatever theyre called that you could climb

so funny to look back at epic battle fantasy 4 (flash rpg i played for AGES but always on the local library computers that would reset after like 2 hours so i got really good at speedrunning the beginning of the game) after playing an actual final fantasy game and seeing what it was taking inspiration from/making fun of

This predated him and youtube by half a decade, if anything he's a reflection of the standard newgrounds user back in the day because that sort of edginess was par for the course and was incredibly common in that era. He's just the one who managed to actually get big with it and the parasocial aspect of streams with live chat and direct interaction made it way, way worse than it ever got on NG. 100% complete agreement about him causing the youtube apocalypse though. eta: I should probably also add that A LOT of the appeal here in the early days (at least, early days of dialup. this is really just an echo of eternal september but that's another story) was that the internet was a special private clubhouse since you needed an ISP and a computer and both required some knowledge of setup to get online. As such there was a huge culture of dumping on people who somehow managed to get onto the internet without requisite knowledge of online etiquitte, very closely mirroring the way that new players get dumped on in multiplayer games. This evolved into spamming shock images at new or annoying people to get them to go away and grew pretty quickly into acceptance of the shock stuff being a sign that you were someone who belonged on the internet, leading to early newgrounds/stileproject/somethingawful culture. (this would be around 1999-2003ish, a good 6 years before the first smartphone and when the average connection was 28.8k or 56k)

Als Hexe angeklagt, sollte sie auf dem Dorfplatz verbrannt werden, konnte aber mit Hilfe von Freunden fliehen. Nach Jahren der Flucht fand sie in Amiens ein Zuhause und gründete 1804 die Kongregation der "Schwestern Unserer Lieben Frau" mit der Zielsetzung der Unterweisung junger Frauen.
