We were discussing the definition of bilingualism, as "an active user of two languages" - Birdsong (in press, to appear 2025) Age Learning and Second Language attainment that will be published soon, and talking in more detail about some questions that I had:

Why does this definition prioritize active use over capability?

Could capability be more relevant in certain contexts, and does this definition exclude passive bilinguals who can understand but not actively use a second language?

How does it account for individuals capable of using two languages but choosing to speak only one? Should "choice" factor into the definition?

If someone "loses" one language because of a disease (neurodegenerative, stroke...) should we still consider them as bilinguals?

Through my questions we talked about the importance of having a broad inclusive definition and being also critical of the current SLA research and the need for operational definitions to have better direction and clarity

I'm excited for the next classes and studying about bilingualism effects and L2A outcomes, how L2 influences L1 is quite interesting!

La teledetección es una herramienta poderosa que permite la adquisición de datos de grandes áreas geográficas sin la necesidad de un contacto físico directo. En el caso de la isla de Gran Canaria, mediante las imágenes satelitales obtenidas por el Sentinel-2 podemos observar distintos aspectos del territorio, como la vegetación, los suelos y su evolución a lo largo del tiempo. Esta capacidad de monitoreo resulta crucial en el ámbito forestal, ya que permite detectar cambios en la cobertura forestal, identificar áreas afectadas por incendios, plagas o enfermedades, y planificar acciones de restauración y manejo de manera más eficiente.

El Sentinel-2, al ser un satélite de alta resolución espacial y temporal, nos proporciona imágenes multiespectrales que permiten identificar y diferenciar tipos de vegetación, así como monitorizar el estrés hídrico de los bosques, evaluar la regeneración natural después de un incendio, o realizar un seguimiento de la desertificación y degradación del suelo. En el timelapse que observamos, podemos apreciar la capacidad de este tipo de imágenes para capturar detalles sobre la evolución de la vegetación en la isla, lo cual es clave para la planificación forestal.

Importancia del manejo de los Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG)

Sin embargo, para aprovechar al máximo los datos proporcionados por la teledetección, es imprescindible contar con sistemas avanzados que permitan la manipulación y análisis de estos datos. Aquí es donde los Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) juegan un papel fundamental. Los SIG son herramientas que permiten almacenar, manipular, analizar y representar espacialmente grandes cantidades de datos geográficos, lo que facilita la toma de decisiones basada en la evidencia.

Como técnicos forestales, el manejo de los SIG no solo es deseable, sino necesario. Nos permite integrar diferentes capas de información, como la topografía, la hidrología, el uso del suelo y los datos obtenidos por teledetección, para generar análisis complejos y precisos. Por ejemplo, podríamos utilizar los SIG para superponer los datos multiespectrales de Sentinel-2 con mapas de áreas protegidas, identificar zonas críticas de conservación o determinar áreas prioritarias para la reforestación.

Aplicaciones prácticas en el campo forestal

En la práctica, la teledetección y los SIG ofrecen varias aplicaciones clave en la gestión forestal:

Monitoreo de incendios forestales: Las imágenes satelitales pueden utilizarse para detectar incendios activos y evaluar el daño causado por el fuego en áreas forestales. La rápida detección permite una respuesta oportuna, mientras que el análisis post-incendio puede facilitar los planes de restauración.

Seguimiento del cambio en la cubierta forestal: A través de análisis multitemporales como el del timelapse, es posible evaluar la deforestación, la expansión de áreas urbanas o agrícolas, y otros cambios en el uso del suelo que afectan a los ecosistemas forestales.

Evaluación de la salud de la vegetación: Las bandas espectrales del Sentinel-2, en particular las del infrarrojo cercano y el infrarrojo de onda corta, permiten realizar índices de vegetación como el NDVI (Índice de Vegetación de Diferencia Normalizada), que es ampliamente utilizado para evaluar la salud de los bosques.

Control de plagas y enfermedades: La teledetección puede ayudar a identificar áreas de vegetación afectadas por plagas o enfermedades forestales al detectar anomalías en el crecimiento o color de la vegetación.

Planificación de reforestación: Con los SIG y la teledetección, se pueden identificar las áreas más adecuadas para la reforestación, basándose en la topografía, la composición del suelo, y la proximidad a fuentes de agua, entre otros factores.

La teledetección y los sistemas SIG se han convertido en herramientas esenciales para los técnicos forestales. Estos sistemas no solo nos permiten monitorear el estado actual de los ecosistemas forestales, sino también anticipar problemas y planificar intervenciones adecuadas para su conservación y manejo. A través de imágenes como las obtenidas por el satélite Sentinel-2, podemos obtener una visión integral y precisa de los recursos naturales, lo que facilita una gestión más sostenible y eficiente.

En resumen, el futuro de la gestión forestal está inextricablemente ligado al uso de tecnologías avanzadas como la teledetección y los SIG, y es nuestra responsabilidad como profesionales forestales dominar estas herramientas para enfrentar los desafíos que los ecosistemas forestales presentan en el contexto de un mundo cambiante.
