Last five minutes of the season finale: Welcome home party at the newly renovated Bathena house for Eddie & Chris where we have a scene overlay / voiceover of Eddie turning down the El Paso job because he realized he did have someone waiting in L.A. CUE Eddie staring longingly at Buck during the party until it seemingly fades to black except the last second we fade to the front door and its Bobby with his back turned towards the camera knocking on the door.

BUCK WHO IS ALWAYS SO GIVING OFFERING TO COOK THE DIAZ’S DINNER. EDDIE WHO IS SO BAD WITH WORDS BUT GOT HIS AUNTY TO MAKE DINNER FOR THEM. A HOME COOKED MEAL. EDDIE WHO BROUGHT HOME THEIR SON JUST TO CHEER BUCK UP.

BUCK WHO WAS SITTING AT AN EMPTY DINNER TABLE AT THE START OF THE EPISODE. HIS WORK FAMILY BROKEN.

BUT THE FAMILY HE HAS WITH EDDIE IS THERE. EDDIE DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO TELL BUCK THAT BUT GOD IN THAT MOMENT DOES HE SHOW IT.

Two full seasons of Hen and Karen trying their best to give that little girl a permanent home and keep her close to her brother (both of her brothers! because Denny counts!), and the payoff was a 15 second scene in a song montage in a season finale when we’ve barely even seen Mara or Denny in 8b. If you were going to write Hen and Karen struggling to add to their family across that many seasons (like were they not already agreed on trying IVF with a donor when the ladder truck exploded??? in season TWO???), the scene where they finally completed their family should’ve been paid much more attention and love than that single scene. It’s the same thing with Madney’s baby number two birth scene. Maddie, Chim, and Jee have suffered so much over this season (and since season 2 as well!!) trying to be together and heal as a family. You can’t just shove these adorable children and additions to the 118 family in our faces in 15 second scenes and expect it to feel fulfilling. If you want to have big emergencies in multiple episodes, get better at pacing so that you can show the family moments that you should know by now are the real aspect of the show that makes fans stay. The big emergencies can still be the draw without overwhelming the script and character arcs. These aren’t fulfilled storylines when you wrap things up quickly at the end of the finale’s big emergency because the time after the final commercial is not enough to give the whole firefam their rightful screen time.

As of right now (18.4.2025), the lowest rated episode of 9-1-1 in S8 on IMDB has rating of 7.3. For all of the 8 seasons there is only one episode rated lower than 7 - Ghost Stories with 6.8.

Lab Rats currently sits at 4.2.

If this doesn't tell you how poorly this episode landed then I don't know what will. And it will definitely change but I don't see it going much higher.

Tim shot himself in the foot with this one and every single person who trusted his demented vision will be banging their head against the first available firm surface if they already aren't.

I am really curious about how they plan on cleaning up what this episode damaged. Because it is not just one little thing. They shot so many holes in this ship, even the Swiss cheese makers would be envious.

Were we supposed to think that Athena was going to go visit a somehow still-alive Bobby at the hospital?

Because up until they finally revealed that it was Madney & baby, it kind of felt like we were purposely being teased again, especially since Peter Krause was still in the credits as an actor, even though this was the only episode since Bobby's death to have him listed but as credit only. Maybe it's just me still being upset about it, but idk. It just felt like another "...or IS he?" kind of moment from the creative team, and I'm so over that. Either let him be alive or let him be dead. Don't tease us about it. It's not cool and not funny and it helps nothing. Punching down at your audience is really probably the last thing you should be doing right now if you want to save any amount of your viewership.

All of that having been said, I did expect that they would name their son after Bobby, but I didn't expect them to give the full first-and-last name as his first and middle. I figured it would be Robert [some other middle name] Han or [some other first name] Robert (or maybe Bobby) Han, but not Robert Nash Han. Even still, the tears were flowing when Athena held him and said, "Hello, Bobby."

Disappointing, if not entirely surprising, lack of gay shit.

I'm very satisfied with (implied?) Captain Chim, though!! (Also I called that last week!) And it was so sweet and fitting that Athena helped give him the confidence to get there! 🥰 Though it's perhaps a little concerning that he's starting his rule with, "I'm locking the doors; nobody leaves." 😅 how's that work-life balance going, 118?

(Though I do feel like they made Hen seem kind of meek in order to provide a space for him to step into? Which doesn't seem necessary to me. But also I haven't watched the whole show, so I may not have the best understanding of the characters, and Icould be misinterpreting.)

It's always funny to me when they're like, "we're the 118, we're a team, we're a family!!" or whatever, and two thirds of the ensemble are nameless extras 😅😅 like, I understand why the structure of the story necessitates that, but it's still funny.

Sooo is season 9 gonna start with Buck living on the Diaz's couch?? Making things awkward even though they don't really need to be awkward? Them trying to play the part of Platonic Best Friends, and only partially succeeding?

I AM kinda disappointed we didn't get to see Buck be relieved that Eddie wasn't leaving!!! Like, I know that, textually, he wanted to transfer bc he missed Bobby, but we all know he would never have felt that lost if Eddie hadn't intended to go back to Texas. Buck was definitely a little bit about to blow up his whole life and support network bc his bestie was moving. So it would've been nice to see him react to the news, especially bc the way we jumped straight to him apartment hunting really made him seem perpetually adrift. He's literally over here saying tragic and metaphorical shit to his real estate agent.

Does anyone else feel like it might be weird to name a baby after someone you're close to, who has recently passed? Like, just potentially confusing. Especially if it's the name the child is actually going to be called. But I say this was someone who has never lost someone close to me, or, like, named a baby. So maybe idk what I'm talking about lol. 🤷🏻‍♀️

(I'm also literally named after my own dead abuelita, but that's not the name anyone in my family has ever called me, so I don't think it counts!) (Also it's not like my mom called her by HER name when she was alive.)

Context aside though, I do think Bobby is a cute name for baby Han. Like, Chim and Maddie do seem like they'd be parents to a Bobby! 🥰

It is seeming increasingly likely that og Bobby is actually dead, though. 😬
