I hate the tech industry
Even though I've been diligently applying for jobs in this shit job market, I've come to the conclusion that I'm completely done with tech.
Why?
Aside from being tired of working for other people, I'm tired of the head-games that employers and other employees like to play on people.
And the head-games since graduating in 2010 and getting into the field have been non-stop. More so than the ones that I had to deal with as a janitor. The biggest difference between janitor and software developer is if I fucked up, I knew when I fucked up. It wasn't subjective, either.
First place out of college. I learned a lot and expanded my knowledge. I learned enough that I was even part of the hiring and onboarding team for new developers. When it came time for advancement, I got told that I'd never be a senior dev because I rarely work more than 42 hours a week (I'm salary lol). That was the start of me beginning to not care about titles. After that, I started looking since it became obvious that I wouldn't advance much there.
Get a new job at the second place out of school. Looks like there's ripe opportunities for advancement. Lol nope, I missed this one little thing that may or may not have been a bug that somehow slipped past QA. Was told by my manager that I'm not senior material. So I have to be perfect to be a senior developer.
Got it.
Third place: I'm not white and male, and I'm just a stand-in.
Fourth place: who the fuck knows because I got laid off within four months of being hired because the CEO was running the place into the ground. Heard from a friend that same CEO stole a bunch of PPP money and then turned around and laid off more people during the pandemic.
And finally, the most recent place: I basically had to be this one specific half-assed dev in order to be a senior dev. Said half-assed dev introduced a zero-day in one of the company's WP plugins because he thought he was being clever by introducing a Laravel-style ORM to WordPress.
Basically, I need a job but I fucking hate the tech industry specifically, and white-collar office environments in general.
I'm neurodivergent. I don't read between the lines well, if at all. I don't take hints. Say what you mean, and actually mean it. Plain-speak works best for me. However, even though I'm ND, my survival instincts are quite honed and if I get the sense someone is trying to fuck with me, it's over. I won't deal with you. You go to the time-out corner and think your sins over.
That being said, I realized something. I'm tired of playing in other people's sandboxes. As a child, I had no problem playing by myself. As an adult, the same rules apply.
I know what I bring to the table, I'm not afraid to eat alone.
