Another 2022-present portable computer thing. This is a 1991 Corvallis Microtechnologies PC5-L. It's a ruggedized, waterproof handheld MS-DOS computer meant for industrial applications. It ran on Ni-Cd batteries and they died so now it runs on AA's I got two of them for $50 on eBay during one of those months when i impulse buy obscure electronics as a form of escapism This thing is an absolute brick. You could murder someone by hitting them on the head with this, and it would work fine afterwards. Here's pictures of its organs for anyone curious:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That thick red wire around the screen PCB is a heater. Yep there's a setting to heat up the LCD so it doesn't get sluggish or shatter when you decide to leave it in the freezer. The thing runs on a little system-on-chip thing, which is interesting to see coming from the early 90's. Iirc the datasheet says it's capable of analog video out as well as driving the LCD, but I haven't poked around enough to enable it. Might be cool to hook it up to a TV. I did, however, open those 512k storage modules and I saw some unpopulated footprints on the boards. So I ordered some of the same chips, and at some point I'mma try soldering them on and see if it recognizes the extra space. They came with two voltmeter modules, which I couldn't get to work, so I took one of the casings and made it into a USB and WiFi adapter using an ESP32 running Zimodem, since this thing has RS232 ports on the top. I also made my own charging adapter, since they didn't come with one. I see that internal PCMCIA slot, and I tried putting a CF card adapter in, and tried installing the drivers, but it didn't work. I'm not good at DOS tbh, and I know nothing of what this slot is for. I might come back to it later. I did all of this in 2022-23 and haven't messed with it since. Except to use it to talk to my Kaypro 4 '84:

More on that one later. I love portable computers !!!!!

Gundam Calibarn watch!
Been hit hard by the Witch from Mercury brainworms lately, so when I first saw this junker watch for sale I thought it could make for a fun gundam project!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The watch looked fine in the sale listing, but its actual condition wasn't great- the spring bars holding the straps had rusted and gotten stuck, and the straps had to be cut away to access and dislodge the bars.
The gasket had also melted, and the inside of the casing was covered with some sort of fishy-smelling residue. Thankfully though, the main watch module was still functional.
It took a good while to clean everything up and buff out the scratches, but once that was done I could get started on the customisation!
First off, the old yellowed straps were replaced with a fresh white silicone strap to match the calibarn. I also designed a custom sticker for the watch face based on some gundam decals. It took many attempts to apply the sticker without air bubbles forming, but the final result was worth it!
For the permet effects, I cut up some rainbow holographic film and applied it the lcd screen. The effect is subtle most of the time, so the watch is still easy to read. However, it shines beautifully when it catches the light!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, I'm pretty happy with how this project turned out! The total cost of the watch + materials was much cheaper than if I had gotten the same watch brand-new, and it's always a great feeling to clean up something old for use again.
If you want to try making your own, I recommend using a junk/secondhand watch for this - I nearly broke my watch fiddling around with it, so please don't do this with anything expensive! There are plenty of tutorials on youtube for any customisations you want to make, so explore around and see what works for you!

Chapter 224 Trivia
Happy birthday Senku! He's finally in space! 🎉🚀
Tumblr media
We can see the approximate distance to Treasure Island from the mainland in this shot, the only other indication of where the island is is in the (non-canon) Reboot side story. My guess is the exact island used is Aogashima.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another summary of the journey, this time including prehistory. We have depictions from the most recent ice age (though could be later, mammoths and sinomegaceros were around for a while afterwards, even in Japan), early civilization similar to Ishigami Village, and ancient Rome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the parts present in the manga itself, I've added the chapter numbers to each of the panels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The books Senku has here are "General Chemistry" and "たのしい 科学" ("Fun Science"). The latter may be a reference to a children's science education book series named "たのしい! 科学のふしぎ なぜ?どうして?" ("Fun! The Mysteries of Science: Why? How?").
Tumblr media
We get a glimpse of the docking system here. Possibly based off the SSVP, as it was used with almost all the Soyuz craft and Russian space stations to connect modules.
This docking area then opens up, becoming the transfer tunnel so astronauts can enter/exit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I suppose the astronauts were completely naked in their space suits so that when the revival fluid is released, their skin will definitely get touched?
I can't think of any other reason for it, but it does make the previous chapter funnier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Senku's petrification scars are now fully healed!
(Stanley's are too, poor Xeno is the only one with them now.)
Tumblr media
The mystery of how Stanley is meant to use these "cigarettes" remains.
Tumblr media
These belts are the middle part of the external space suit, so it's probably how the top and bottom parts are locked in. After they change, they tighten the fabric inside so that it stays attached to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not entirely sure why they need it, since current space suits usually just attach the top to the bottom directly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're using both CRT and LCD screens. My guess is the LCDs are more convenient (it's easier to display things from computer->LCD than it is to a CRT, also text is more legible due to the pixels), but they still have several CRTs from earlier so they may as well use them too.
Tumblr media
Stanley asks about their oxygen supply, meaning they may be limited until the rocket is assembled. Normally, there's recycling systems onboard to collect waste products and convert it into clean air or water, but Stanley and Xeno's discussion makes me think they don't have one.
Tumblr media
Obviously, the astronauts have new outfits, but they don't seem to follow any previous astronaut outfits depicted in the series.
Senku's popped collar is still present, but now he lacks his signature equation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stanley's outfit changed the least, it remains form-fitting and solid black, with white gloves.
Oddly, Kohaku is still wearing a dress in space, but it's a lot neater and more modern than her previous roughly-hemmed one. She's also got both long socks and boots without a heel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The spray dryer does a similar preservation process to what they did when freeze-drying ramen, however this process is better for foods (and pharmaceuticals) that are sensitive to temperature.
Here, they dry a liquid (like ramen broth) using a hot gas, turning it into a powder.
Tumblr media
In true Francois fashion, the ramen packets made by them contain more meat and garnishes than the ones Byakuya ate. They're also visibly more delicious-looking.
Tumblr media
Without regular boosts, the ISS would fall to Earth in around 6 months, however this number can vary a lot depending on atmospheric conditions and the relative angle/position of the ISS to the direction of travel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basically, unless someone/something continued to control it almost immediately, the ISS is definitely gone.
(Rei didn't, the Reboot isn't canon.)

DIY: Marauder with Screen and GPS For Flipper Zero
Many of you would have seen the humongous ESP32 add-on module with touch screen and GPS for Flipper Zero shared in discussion groups, forums, etc. Well, this tutorial will provide you with all the information you need to build one yourself.
Tumblr media
This build consists of mainly 4 parts. The TFT LCD 2.8" 240x320 SPI ILI9341 Touch Display cost me around US$5.50, the ESP32-WROOM-32U module cost around US$3, the NEO-6M GPS module cost around US$2.20 and an 8dbi 2.4GHz Wifi Antenna which cost around US$2. All of these parts can be easily found in online marketplaces like Aliexpress, Amazon, etc. Here is how you need to wire them up together. How you wish to lay this out or mount on a prototyping board is entirely up to you. As long as the connections are correct, you are good to go. The GPS module is optional, and mainly, it's used for the war driving functionality.
Tumblr media
Next, you need to download all the firmware needed from here. Please download the Bootloader, Partitions, Boot App and Firmware files for v4 (Yes, v4 files, not any others) and save it on your computer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, press and hold the BOOT button on your ESP32-WROOM-32U module and connect it to your computer using a data-capable USB cable (some USB cables can only charge), then let go the BOOT button. Open Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser and go to ESPWebTool. Click the CONNECT button, then select the ESP32 usb serial connection. It should look something like below but can vary a little between different computers and operating systems.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Select the firmware files for each slot exactly like below (take note of the 0x1000, 0x8000, etc. and their corresponding .bin files), then hit the PROGRAM button.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When completed successfully, you can unplug the USB cable from the ESP32 module and now you can connect your Marauder module to your Flipper Zero. Please ensure that your Flipper Zero is turned off before you connect it, and also turn off your Flipper Zero before disconnecting it. The 3.3V pin is also used by your Flipper Zero's SD card reader and connecting/disconnecting external modules that use this pin while the Flipper Zero is on can potentially corrupt the SD card. So, if everything went according to plan, your Marauder module should boot up and everything should look like below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOTE: If your Marauder boots up, but when you try to touch the screen and get no response, try tapping around the bottom part of your screen and see if the touch panel seems to be in inverted position from the actual display. Should this happen to you, just flash your ESP32 module again following the steps above, but use the v6 firmware. This should resolve the issue.
In this build, I just prototyped this on breadboard, but you can of course make it permanent by soldering it on to a prototype board and 3D print a case for it. This setup is essentially just using the Flipper Zero as a battery pack, instead of using the Flipper Zero to control Marauder. The large screen does make some things easier to do, compared to the small screen of the Flipper Zero, and there may be some functionality (not much) that is not currently in the Flipper Zero Marauder companion app. Here is a video showing the different menus in Marauder.
Personally, I don't think I will actually want to bring something so big around with me, along with my Flipper Zero. I think what makes Flipper Zero special is just how compact it is and all the different functionality cramped into it. This would probably be better off as a standalone unit by just hooking up a battery, but that's just me. Well, that's it for this tutorial. I hope you found this helpful.
Here's a good intro to Marauder if you are unfamiliar.

Choosing the Right LCD Panel: A Key Component in Modern Display Solutions
In today’s digital world, LCD panels have become a cornerstone of countless industries—from consumer electronics and automotive systems to medical devices and industrial machinery. These thin, efficient, and high-resolution displays power everything from your smartphone to factory control screens, and understanding their structure and benefits is essential for any business sourcing display modules.
At the core of any visual device lies the LCD display module, which includes the panel LCD, TFT screen, and sometimes a touch interface or LCD driver board. The choice of an LCD module depends on the specific use-case requirements, such as brightness, resolution, durability, and interface compatibility.
Advantages of TFT LCD Modules
A TFT LCD module (Thin-Film Transistor) enhances traditional LCD performance by giving each pixel its own transistor. This results in faster response times, brighter displays, and superior color accuracy. TFT technology is especially popular in applications demanding real-time data and precision—such as POS systems, test equipment, and automotive dashboards.
For businesses needing durable and reliable displays in challenging environments, TFT LCD modules provide optimal visibility and performance under varied lighting and temperature conditions.
Customization and Versatility in Display Modules
From small handhelds to large touch terminals, the display module is more than just a screen—it's an integrated solution. Modern LCD display modules can be customized with capacitive or resistive touchscreens, wide viewing angles, extended temperature ranges, and anti-glare coatings. This adaptability makes them suitable for industrial automation, kiosks, HMI (human-machine interface) systems, and more.
The growing need for visual interaction in devices has also led to increased demand for high-quality screen displays. OEMs and system integrators often rely on replacement LCD screens to extend the lifecycle of existing products, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure consistent performance over time.
Selecting the Right LCD Display Module
When selecting an LCD display screen, consider the application environment. Is it exposed to sunlight? Will it need glove touch? Should it resist shock, dust, or moisture? These factors determine whether a basic screen module or a ruggedized TFT LCD screen is the better fit.
Manufacturers like INNOLUX, BOE, AUO, and LG produce a wide range of LCD display modules that serve industries such as medical equipment, transportation, and smart home devices.
Conclusion
Whether you're sourcing a replacement LCD screen, designing a new device, or upgrading your product line, choosing the right TFT LCD module or LCD panel is crucial. With advances in brightness, responsiveness, and durability, modern display LCD technology continues to enhance how users interact with digital content—making it an essential component of innovation across industries.

LCD Display modules are commonly used in most of the embedded projects to display various output data. It's cheap, handy, and programmer-friendly for various DIY projects. The Alphanumeric Graphical LCD (2004A) is a 20x4 Liquid Crystal Display that comes in blue or green colors. It can show four lines of text, with each line holding up to 20 characters making a total of 80 characters to be displayed on screen. This is larger than the 16x2 LCD, but the programming is similar. The display is used to show a wide range of things like text, characters, numbers, and symbols.

143. Peter Oliphant/Mattel - Dungeons & Dragons Computer Fantasy Game (1981)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first D&D computer game faithfully adapts GDQ 1-7 modules... just kidding, it's just a little guy on an LCD screen trying to avoid falling into a pit and trying to kill a Dragon.
Tumblr media
A very simple game, you start off with a grappling hook (on level 1) and that stands for one extra life. So when you fall in a pit you can get out with the hook which is expended. As you move around the very simple and geometrically regular dungeon you can find other grappling hooks. You must pay attention, however, to items flashing in your screen, like a pit, a hook, an arrow or a dragon. When they flash it means they are on an adjacent room and you have to avoid or find them, You want the arrow to kill the dragon and the grappling hooks to get extra lives. You inevitably die by falling in a pit with no grappling hook. You win if you manage to hit the dragon with a previously obtained arrow.
Tumblr media
You can find videos of people playing this on YouTube and it seems like something which might amuse you for a while, back in 1981. If you want to buy one they've been going for between 200 and 300 dollars on EBay.
