Lightning Round 9

I read a lot of comics every week but don't have it in me to write a small dissertation about each one, so here's some thoughts about a few books! This time it's Iron Man, Exceptional X-Men, Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu and DC x Sonic the Hedgehog. This is the big post for the week of May 21 2025.

Iron Man #8

Tony deals with a strike at the factory he intends to use to undermine Doom’s world at some point. Aside from the ridiculously funny idea that Melinda really figured out a way to make a SHIELD-style acronym with fucking S.T.R.I.K.E.B.R.E.A.K.E.R.S., there’s a lot going on with the discussions about Tony’s actual role in this world, Doom or not. The characterization of Tony as a guy who will threaten to automate a factory to the face of a union leader, but then turn around and promise them seats on the board, is a little bipolar but it fits the situation fine enough.

I did kind of want Natasha to actually engage with what the story is about, instead of just threatening to call the Avengers on Tony if he keeps his plans up. I guess Bucky’s lack of nuance is contagious and she’s spending too much time with him, but still, it’s a weirdly simplistic take on the character that no one else in the book can really compare to. 

I would also like everyone to enshrine this specific panel in a crystalline box so that we can all look at Tony Stark saying “we can’t free the world from Doom and go back to the status quo” in six months. 

Exceptional X-Men #9 

Incredible issue for all the new mutants. They finally feel like a unit and they’re finally working together and bouncing off each other in the middle of fights very well. More than that, Melee’s invisibility makes her distinct enough from Kate that it no longer feels like she’s redundant, and everyone’s ultimate showdown with Mister Sinister was a joy to read.

Although, is it really that obvious an assumption that the clone melted because of bad Krakoan genes…? That felt very off and it felt like Kitty could have just found out about Essex with the context clues she already had. Everything about Resurrection-Linked Degenerative Sickness is bad and should go away, but this example specifically felt like it didn’t even make sense. You didn’t have to connect these stories like that.

This is also probably my favorite Emma Frost issue ever since Fall of X ended. Incredible stuff, can’t wait for the next one. Very excited that she finally has a catchphrase that always feels earned. 

Superior Avengers #2

So, wait, how long were the Avengers banished by Dormammu for…? Reading the main book it feels like it was just for the time they were fighting; maybe an hour or so, and then they came back. It literally happens over the course of an issue. In this, it’s implied they’ve been away for a while. Long enough that the Superior Avengers are the only team around. 

That’s… not right, yeah? That can’t be right? That doesn’t feel right. Either way, the original premise is elaborated upon and it turns out to be a little more complex than just “Doom is incredibly bad actually”, but we do keep getting these confirmations that his reign will eventually degrade into a terrine dystopia. We just don’t get to know why yet. Here’s hoping for that reveal, I guess.

Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #8

God damn I keep forgetting I love this book, look at this ART man holy SHIT.

Me losing my mind about Pramanik and Rosenberg’s collaboration for the nth time aside, the arc continues strong. Very cool issue with an interesting twist, and a chance to get my beloved Midnight Mission back! If God is real and we have been good, it might happen!

There’s never much to say aside from “please read Moon Knight”, and this is gonna be one of those times.

After Shinmer turns the air in Thunder’s lungs to water, she almost dies and has to stay in the hospital while she recovers. Black lighting, Thunders father, comes to visit her. In his way out, dick praises his daughter to him but is shoved against a wall and blamed for what happened to her because he wasn’t looking out for Anissa. Roy watches from the sidelines (Outsiders Vol.3 #16)

Randomly remembered the half-reason i call my oc-verse by the name it has while laying in bed. One-half of the reason i still knew, but I had forgotten what had truly, really cemented it jointly until now

(it was a song from my favourite band I haven't listened to in a while.)

(the song fit so well at the time, still does, that i needed to hold onto it for the main protagonists forever, by partially naming their story in reference.)

Does this explanation make any sense? Does anyone know why I'm tearing up remembering this. Aahh

Lightning Round #12

What’s up gang, it’s a holiday and we’re taking it easy, so let’s have a mostly lightning-fast time today. Today's Lightning Round is Absolute Flash, Ultimates, Iron Man and Moon Knight - Fist of Khonshu.

Absolute Flash #4

We’re introduced to more Absolute versions of characters: bizarrely enough, Elongated Man and hints of his wife Sue, as a so far well-meaning couple who run a shelter for the homeless. Wally and Grodd take the offer and we’re teased a bunch of new villains, including next issue’s Heatwave. 

Overall a great intro to the next part of the story now that we’re done with the intro. Homeless teenage Flash with his magical telepathic monkey friend is a really wonderful idea for a status quo, and I hope we see a lot more of it. We’re also introduced to Linda in this, but I’m still more concerned with the sci-fi trappings and cool visuals than I am with the inevitable romance. 

Book still good, still has a monkey in it.

Ultimates #13

This one feels less like an issue about anything in particular and more like setup for the final arc of the comic before the Maker comes back. We accompany the Ultimates 3.0’s inception and how they’re actually trying to change the world, and it… feels a lot less nuanced than 2.0, which is probably just a matter of rhythm.

I do enjoy the idea that Luke's prisons have become essentially city-states and that now they're englobed by a time dilation bubble, but I feel like I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I was reading the Ultimate Luke Cage book I've been sacrificing all these goats to get for months now. Every time they cut back to Luke he's charming and doing wild shit, keep the camera on him, god damn. Everyone else has their own thing going on and it’s more or less different versions of what they were doing before, now tailored toward vaguely humanistic approaches to community-building.

I do think this is the most interesting Tony Stark issue so far, but in a book without character relationships to really talk about, it kinda feels like he’s growing in a vacuum a bit. If Ultimates had maybe more time, or even a spin-off where the characters were allowed to interact more, this would have been a lot more interesting. It’s still very good though, but, yeah. We’ve done this exact commentary better in this very same book, I feel.

Moon Knight - Fist of Khonshu #9

Save my mans, his demons are coming for him. Very intense issue where Marc does what every hero should do every once in a while: gets incredibly high and almost dies of an OD. 

I do think it’s funny how we’re fully committing to Mysterium being a Hank Pym thing– Marvel Rivals of all places also did that, and now Moon Knight is also serving as a primary source of that association. Either way, not much to say here, even though I would have liked to see Steven and Jake’s reaction to Marc getting magic drugs injected into himself. 

We’re also back to consistently great art, which was a problem a few issues ago. Peak is here, peak is back, Hunter’s Moon is so fucking good, etc etc please read Moon Knight.

Iron Man #9

Between the pacing cramming five issues in one and no Iron Man #11 in sight in the solicits, this might be it insurgentbros, apparently working with bigots and terrorists wasn’t the golden path. 

I’m kinda disappointed with how it’s all turning out, because I was really enjoying the book and had a lot to say about every issue, but this is just kind of messy. Even if it’s not cancelled it’s a bad issue where too much happens too fast, and it’s just kind of confusing to go through as a result. Really hoping Ackerman can come back and write Tony again if this is it, because his voice for the character rules, but yeah rip this idea, you were too good for the company’s current status quo.

Personally I think the thing that made my feat of beating Radahn solo all the more impressive is I used a fist weapon to do it. Technically, it was a pair of +13 frost hook claws + using catch flame, but from what my boyfriend said that was still pretty impressive.
