I have played and run DDAL at a variety of different venues 2. If you can have consistent players, great. While trying to present a consistent storyline is a laudable goal, and each season of DDAL modules does have some consistency, that is not actually the design of an organized play campaign. When playing older content, you always disregard any leveling instructions in that content and follow the current rules.ĭepending on the available content being run at your particular venue, players can simply decline to level up if doing so will take the character out of Tier for the next available module. If you're playing DDAL, you always use the current season's rules regardless of the age of the content, so you'll need to review the rules each season to see what has changed. When running hardcovers, characters advance after a certain number of hours (8 hours, 4 in Tier 1), again if the player wishes to (though the DM can trigger advancement early in hardcovers). Characters advance at the end of each module (even 1 hour mini-modules) if the player wishes to. Leveling CadenceĪs for leveling cadence, as of Season 9 (the current season at the time of this writing), it's almost entirely within the hands of the players, not the DM. The D&D Adventurers League Player & DM Pack on the DM's Guild includes a Content Catalog showing which modules are appropriate for which tiers of play. However, it is Tier 1 that determines which characters can play a DDAL module, not level. They also include instructions on rebalancing the module for a lower average level and a smaller or larger party. Note that I'm forced to play by the Adventurers League rules if I want to run games in this game store on this day.Įach DDAL module is designed for a particular Average Party Level (APL), and assumes a party of five characters. If I tell my game store that I'm interested in being an Adventurers League DM, what is the most natural progression of adventures that I would run? At what points in this progression would I expect my group to gain levels, and is this consistent with having them always be at an appropriate level for the adventure? I've omitted the link to the list-of-scenarios page I found, because it seems to be deprecated. If I just ran those scenarios one after the next, the group would eventually be level seven in an adventure designed for level ten characters. Just doing "run the adventures off this webpage, in order" would have been really convenient, but I noticed that the rate at which characters leveled was not consistent with the difficulty curve of the adventures. I found one page which seemed to have a list of scenarios that I could run one after the other. I might start as an Adventurers League DM soon and I'm trying to figure out how it all works.

Someone Be My Adventurer’s League Teacher...

For those that don’t know, the Dungeons & Dragons “Adventurers League” is a way for everybody to play a Game of D&D regularly without any kind of scheduling conflicts: You just play a Game!

Sounds incredible right?

But there's a bunch of different things that can confuse new players (including Me) who are hoping to start out in Adventurer’s League soon(-ish)... 

So I'm asking the People who are Experts to explain a little: 

How does Adventurers League work? 

Where do I sign up?

Why do I need a Logsheet?

What the heck is “Renown”?

Do I need to pick a Faction, and why should I care which Faction I pick?

Can you run through the same Adventure twice? If not, why?

Why are there so many dang things to track on your Sheet?

What happens if your Character dies, can they be resurrected or are they dead for good (meaning you start all over again)?

What are People that play Adventurer’s League like? Are they nice or would they prefer to play with only “Expert Epic Gamerz!”?

Is there a way to slowly introduce someone, or is everyone thrown in together at the deep end?

What Videos, Documents or Online Content would you recommend someone that wants to get started?

Every time I’ve thought about being a part of Adventurer’s League, I always tend to overthink it, mostly because I’m putting myself in a D&D Game with complete strangers who may or may not instantly dislike me and the way I play.

And trust me, I’ve heard the horror stories of some people in Adventurer���s League being real gatekeepers and creepers to their fellow Players, and I while I know not everyone is like that, I still overthink about “What if I’m stuck with a group of gatekeepers and creepers?”

But anyways, I hope the Adventurer’s League Community will welcome Me and my Friends with with open arms... When we can actually sit around a real table again...

huge journo crunch day today! i spent a lot of time debating page designs and writing logsheets. unfortunately, the nature of my feature school page is that we have to work around school event scheduling while still being on time, so the time restraints for that page are pretty ridiculous... ah well!! i'll survive!!!

13 ga update karena nongkrong di warung sama temen kerja. Lumayan lah update kehidupan kantor. Tapi setelah aku renungkan lagi, kalo nongkrong sama circle itu hawanya negatif karena (1) bahas kerjaan dan (2) pada ngerokok.

Jadi setelah merenung, aku memutuskan untuk mengurangi intensitas nongkrong demi terjaganya kondisi mentalku. Terbukti waktu diajak nongkrong kemarin, aku ga ikut dan lebih milih nonton netflix dan nyuci baju.

14 nya juga ga update karena internet mati. Jadi ya beneran kaya di hutan aja. Untungnya masih ada film yang didownload di netflix jadi ga mati gaya banget. Abis nonton lanjut nyuci baju dan tidur. Kemaren kayanya rekor tidur tercepat dalam sebulan terakhir.

Hari ini cukup capek fisik karena nyiapin sampel buat supplier. Jadinya sore banyak istirahat di kantor. Paling keluar buat ambil logsheet dan stock take. Besok cek sampelnya udah homogen atau belum.

Malemnya nonton event stockbit tentang small to mid cap stocks. Pelita Samudera Shipping yang kasih materi. Meskipun baru ngikutin emiten pelayaran tapi alhamdulillah cukup nyambung. Dapet ilmu baru mulai dari bisnisnya gimana, forecast tahun ini dan gimana cara mereka dapet revenue.

Abis itu sempet baca learning materials buat FSDA. Meski bacanya sambil ngantuk tapi tetep dipaksain belajar. Ini baru beberapa hari. Inget nanti bakal 3 bulan belajar data analytics. Jadi ya kalo ga dibiasain dari sekarang bakal keteteran nanti. Oh iya abis ini mau update catatan keuangan juga.

Pulau Kelapa Bersama Ekskursi Besar HMO “TRITON” ITB 2017

Pada kesempatan kali ini saya akan menceritakan perjalanan saya bersama teman-teman tim Ekskursi Besar HMO “TRITON” ITB 2017 melakukan survey 1 selama 2 hari 1 malam di Pulau Kelapa. Adapun tujuan dari survey 1 ini dilakukan adalah untuk mendapatkan data-data awal untuk social mapping, kelengkapan garis pantai, pengamatan fasilitas umum, dan pengecekkan koral yang telah ditaman pada tahun 2015.

Tim yang berangkat sebanyak 8 orang, yaitu saya sendiri sebagai ketua divisi dokumentasi, Mega sebagai ketua divisi kemasyarakatan,  Carla sebagai ketua bidang program, Danu sebagai ketua divisi lapangan, Reni sebagai bendahara, Harish sebagai ketua bidang operasional, Rizal sebagai ketua divisi logistik, dan Umar sebagai ketua Ekskursi Besar HMO “TRITON” ITB 2017.

Perlengkapan dan perbekalan yang dibawa ketika akan berangkat antara lain alat selam dasar (ADS) untuk pengecekkan koral, tiga buah GPS untuk melakukan tracking garpan dan pengamatan masyarakat, serta marking tempat fasilitas umum, alat dokumentasi utnuk mendokumentasikan seluruh kegiatan kemasyarakatan dan lapangan, logsheet untuk menulis data-data masyarakat dan garpan, peta Pulau Kelapa yang telah dibuat badan ekspedisi sebelumnya pada tahun 2015, makanan dan minuman masing-masing, pakaian untuk berganti, dll.

22 April 2017 – Briefing di Sekretariat Himpunan

Pukul 21.00 kami diarahkan untuk berkumpul di sekretariat himpunan dengan sudah membawa perlengkapan dan perbekalan untuk melakukan cek spek dan briefing perjalanan ke Pulau Kelapa. Pertama-tama saya mengikuti pelatihan penggunaan GPS untuk tracking dan marking dengan pelatih Kak Ariefiandi OS’11 dan Danu sendiri sebagai ketua divisi lapangan. Selanjutnya saya dan tim gunakan untuk istirahat sejenak sebelum kepergian dini hari.

23 April 2017 – Keberangkatan

Sekitar pukul 01.00 saya dan tim berangkat dari kampus menggunakan kendaraaan mobil. Untuk keberangkatan kali ini, Harish menjadi supir dari Bandung hingga Muara Angke. Setelah perjalanan selama kurang lebih 3 jam akhirnya sampai di Muara Angke. Teringat sekali dengan bau amis yang menyengat setelah keluar dari mobil. Bau tersebut mungkin diakibatkan adanya pasar ikan yang dekat dan memunculkan bau amis, serta adanya tumpukan sampah di TPS terdekat.

Saya dan tim lalu menunaikan solat subuh dan beristirahat sejenak untuk menunggu kapal berlayar pada pagi hari. Disambil istirahat, sebagian tim ada yang membeli tiket kapal. Pada saat itu harga tiket kapal menuju Pulau Kelapa adalah Rp.55000.

23 April – Kapal Berlayar Menuju Pulau Kelapa

Sekitar pukul 06.00 kami sudah bergegas menuju kapal yang akan kami tumpangi menuju Pulau Kelapa. Sampai di kapal saya dan tim langsung menata barang-barang di dalam kapal dan menuju bagaian belakang kapal yang terbuka untuk mencoba mengambil foto momen-momen yang ada di kapal. Ternyata kapal masih harus menunggu penumpang lain dan kosongnya kapal-kapal didepan yang menghalangi. Dan singkat cerita, akhirnya kapal berlayar sekitar pukul 08.30. Di awal perjalanan kapal saya gunakan untuk istirahat sejenak. Lalu, pertengahan sampai akhir saya mencoba mengambil foto lagi yaitu foto laut, foto nahkoda mengendarai kapal, foto pulau-pulau yang terlewati, dan foto suasana kapal.

23 April – Merayu Pulau Kelapa

Sekitar pukul 12.00 kami sudah tiba di Pulau Kelapa. Terlihat kesibukan aktivitas warga dan penumpang di dermaga. Setelah turun dari kapal kami langsung mencari kediaman Pak Zainal yang sebelumnya juga sudah membantu banyak dalam Ekskursi besar 2015. Dalam perjalanan mencari kediaman Pak Zainal, kami beristirahat makan siang terlebih dahulu di salah satu warung makan. Setelah beberapa lama, Carla mencoba mencari dan akhirnya bertemu dengan Pak Zainal. Selanjutnya kami dibawa menuju penginapan untuk menyimpan barang-barang dan beristirahat sejenak.

Pukul 14.00 kami mulai briefing untuk melakukan pengamatan masyarakat dan penganbilan data garis pantai. Dari 8 orang tim kami dibagi menjadi 3 kelompok dengan 2 kelompok melakukan pengamatan masyarakat, 1 kelompok melakukan pengambilan data garis pantai. Saya, Reni, dan Umar mendapatkan tugas untuk pengamatan kemasyarakatan bagian timur Pulau Kelapa dan juga Pulau Harapan, lalu Mega, Rizal, dan Harish mendapatkan tugas untuk pengamatan kemasyarakatan bagian barat Pulau Kelapa, serta Carla dan Danu mendapatkan tugas mengambil data garis pantai. Setelah briefing kamipun mulai berpencar untuk tugasnya masing-masing.

Saya dalam kelompok menjadi fotografer untuk fasilitas umum dan masyarakat sekitar, Umar mengoprasikan GPS untuk tracking dan marking fasilitas umum, dan Reni bagian mencatat pada logsheet. Pada Pulau Kelapa bagian timur dan Pulau Harapan, keadaan pemukimannya sangat padat penduduk, rumah-rumah berderet-deret dengan gang kecil sebagai jalan akses utama. Terdapat sekolah-sekolah yang kebetulan sedang berlibur. Masjid dan Mushola cukup banyak di kawasan ini, terdapat juga puskesmas dan kantor polisi. Keadaan masyarakat cenderung bermasyarakat, namun masih kurang terhadap toleransi pengguna jalan. Hal tersebut terlihat dari motor-motor yang klakson berlebihan setiap saya berpapasan dengan masyarakat yang menggunakan motor.

23 April 2017 – Snorkling Pengamatan Koral

Pada sore hari  kami melakukan snorkling mengamati koral yang telah ditanam. Juga pengambilan foto dan video bawah air untuk keperluan dokumentasi. Namun saat itu arus sedang kencang sehingga air terlihat keruh dan membuat daya pandang rendah. Karena hal itu kualitas foto dan video yang diambil kurang memuaskan serta pencarian koral agak susah karena kekeruhan tersebut. Sore itu ditutup dengan melihat sunset di depan penginapan yang menghadap langsung ke lautan. Pada malam harinya kita melakukan evaluasi untuk teknis lapangan, data-data yang didapatkan, dan kendala yang dihadapi. Ada sedikit gangguan pada malam hari ketika listrik penginapan tiba-tiba mati sampai pagi hari dan akhirnya malam tersebut dipakai untuk istirahat.

24 April 2017 – Pulang Bandung

Pagi hari kami sudah bersiap-siap kepulangan. Sekitar pukul 07.00 sudah siap di kapal dan berlayar menuju Muara Angke. Sampai di Muara Angke kami tidak lupa berfoto bersama untuk menutup perjalanan kali ini. Dan sekitar pukul 11.00 kami menuju bandung menggunakan mobil.

What’s a ‘DCI Number’? Do I need it?

A DCI Number is (usually) a 9 Digit Number you're given when you join so they can identify you and the characters you play while you’re a part of the Adventurer’s League, some people also use it to keep track of the people they played through an adventure with too.

You can get your own DCI Number when you make a Wizards Account (https://accounts.wizards.com/) or when you join your Local Adventurer's League Group at your Local Game Store.

How many things do I need to track on my Logsheet?

Beside your usual adventuring activities and session notes, here’s everything you should be keeping track of during your adventures, and it’s a lot!

Any Experience and Character Levels gained during the Session. 

Any Money (Gold, Silver, Copper, Etc.) gained or lost during the Session. 

Any Magic Items gained or lost during the Session. 

The amount of Downtime you gained from Adventuring.

The Name (and Code) of the Adventure you played through that Session. 

How many Hours of the Adventure you played through in that Session. 

The Names (or DCI Numbers) of the Dungeon Master that ran the Adventure and the other people you played it with. 

Can I make a Character of any Tier or Level, or do I always start at Level 1 and play through to Level 20? 

With Adventurer's League, every Character you make always starts at Level 1, unless your Local Gaming Store says otherwise. 

But yeah, your Adventurer's League Characters should always start at 1st Level.

Can you change your Alignment during the Adventure, or can that be done between Adventures or in Downtime?

You can change your Alignment whenever you want (if you so choose), including during an Adventure, between Adventures, and during your Downtime Activities.

The only 'real' rule is that you cannot be Evil, but even that rule has a few exceptions...

How much do they care about "Character Backstory"? If at all? 

There are Dungeon Masters in Adventurer's League who will ask about your Character's Backstory and try to mix it in with the Adventure they're going to run, and there are Dungeon Masters that don't and instead just run through the Adventure as if it doesn't matter who you are or where you come from. 

So always have just a little Backstory in your pockets for your Adventurer's League Characters, just in case they ask.

If I make and play a Character in Season 9 and Season 10 comes out, do I need to make a new Character?

Any of your Adventurer’s League Characters can play in any Adventurer’s League Adventure that they’re the right Level for, regardless of which Season it might be. 

The one exception here is that your Character can only play in each Adventure once, so you can’t run the same Character through the same Adventure twice.

What’s “Renown” and why should I care?

First off: Renown isn't something you should have to track anymore.

Instead, your amount of Renown can give you benefits based on your Tier (Tier 1 to Tier 4), since at higher Tiers, people in the world start hearing of your exploits and are more willing to help you out!

One rule to keep in mind though is that you might not get the benefits of your Renown if you get convicted of committing any kind of crime, or if your Faction thinks you're being a little too crazy and need to be knocked down a peg or two.

Does Renown depend on your Faction, like if you don't pick a Faction you don't get any Renown?

You get more Renown as you advance in Tiers, regardless of whatever Faction you may or may not be a part of.

What are “Tiers”? How do they work?

Tiers in Adventurer’s League work as defined in the Player's Handbook for 5th Edition D&D:

Tier 1 is Levels 1-4

Tier 2 is Levels 5-10

Tier 3 is Levels 11-16

Tier 4 is Levels 17-20

As your Adventurer’s League Character advances in Level, they’ll go from Tier 1 all the way to Tier 4.

Obscure Questions...

For Wizards: If I get a Spell Scroll for a Spell that's not in the PHB or my ‘+1 Resource’, can I still copy it down into my Spellbook or does that break the "PHB+1" Rule? 

The answer is "Yes, you can absolutely do that without breaking the Rules!", it's one of the great benefits of playing a Wizard!

For Wizards: Is there a limit on the amount of Spells I can have in my Spellbook? 

A regular ol' Spellbook has about 100 Pages in it to fill with Spells, and thus fits about 100 Levels of Spells, each Level of a Spell taking up one Page. 

But you can always buy another Spellbook if you want to, or expand on your current Spellbook by buying all the necessary parchment, ink, and other supplies using that hard-earned gold!
