" s-shut up. " kira scoffs, the edge in her voice directly betrays the profuse flush burgeoning on her cheeks. nervous fingers brush along the base of her neck, sliding along the curvature before running through her cropped hair.

truth being, kira's been feeing insecure and uncertain about herself. rejection never happened in the resistance ( not that she was ever aware of at the very least ) but knowing she failed the skrreans and burned that bridge with haneek certainly hurts differently than usual. it was the look of disappointment in the matriarch's eyes that burned her flesh, that singed her skin —— it was heartbreak, it was rejection. truthfully, nerys couldn't remember the last time she's ever felt that way or if she's ever felt that way before.

still, it doesn't change the fact that dax so effortlessly makes her smile despite that burning sensation at the pit of her heart. she shakes her head and laughs heartily, " you're just saying that. "

     ❝LOOK, you’re free to lecture and yell at me all you want when we’re not about to die, but for now i think it’s in our best interests to get our asses moving away from the thing that’s going to kill us.❞ it’s completely apparent that rayne never had any intention of leaving jadzia behind. it’s not her style to save her own skin and leave someone else.

          in years spent traveling between the stars,  cameron’s encountered his fair share of trouble.  and once,  he might well have mistakenly attributed that trouble to the act of space travel,  to new planets,  to all that can go wrong with spacial anomalies,  and to the other countless traps awaiting the unsuspecting spacefarer.  now,  he wholeheartedly believes that even the shortest of stops at deep space 9 would be swift to disabuse even the most naive of that particular misconception.  he had arrived but days before,  and two days have left him not only grateful that his responsibilities remain limited only to his small vessel and her crew,  but also all too eager to be on his way before they find themselves embroiled.

         somehow,  that seems all too inevitable,  and not merely because of their own past track records for trouble.  the corner of his lip twitches into the barest glimmer of wry smile at her question,  though it’s fleeting.    ❛ no,  but I figure you’ll tell me. ❜    the tone of his words carries an invitation to do precisely that.

jadzia idaris, the name she beared prior to joining with the dax symbiont. by every definition, her survival is a miracle. it's as if there's a beacon of light that shone upon her, just this one time in kira's life is she allowed to hold onto the people she love — but jadzia hasn't been the same ... of course she wouldn't be, she almost died & hanging so close to the precipice of death changes a person.

now, kira nerys was never one to allow another person to speak to her in that manner, and for a while jadzia's callous words were not directed at her but nerys knows her words are coming through. nerys knows that the woman she loved for so many years is there — after all, the symbiont couldn't've taken every piece of her ... right?

with a sharp inhale, eyes closing as she prays silently for the strength to speak her truth and come out of the other side alive. lashes bat, brown eyes glancing at a downcast direction as she braces herself for impact.

" that's... that's not fair. that's not fair and you know it! " with courage, she let's herself meet jadzia's back. " you're right — I don't know what it's like to be a joined trill and I don't pretend to know. maybe I don't know exactly how you feel but I've known loss, " her words with a bite that she isn't even certain that she could even muster towards jadzia. " and I know what it's like to have your one purpose of being taken away from you. maybe you'll never be the jadzia before joining with dax, but you will find a new way to be ... a new way to exist — a new jadzia. "

POST TRAUMA PROMPTS

PROMPT,   accepting.

a characteristic trait of the trill is their aversion to heat,   and yet jadzia has never felt so uncomfortably,  bone achingly freezing in her life.  she’d almost died,  but the cold sometimes makes her wonder if she’s really alive…  there’s no warmth to be had in the whole of the universe.  and it’s quiet,  it’s so quiet that it’s suffocating,  even at @colnerys​’ voice  —  impassioned over something jadzia hadn’t heard amidst the silence  —  there’s an undeniable feeling of isolation,   “you almost died.”   knees pulled to her chest, gaze focused on the stars outside,  the trill wonders why kira’s pointing it out…  again.  maybe it’s the fact that jadzia hasn’t left her quarters in days,  that she’s refused to answer her door or talk to anyone,  but that’s just vague supposition.  after a moment,  eyes shift to stare blankly at nerys,  a frown on her lips. 

“i know,  i was there,”   there’s not even annoyance coloring the emotionless reminder  —  like her heart had gone with dax,  leaving only the faintest echoes of the passion she’d once embodied.   “there’s no fixing this,  kira.  i’m never going to be myself again.  to be honest with you?  i think i did die…  all i am now is a shell of jadzia dax,  you shouldn’t waste your time on a ghost.”   she’s tired;  she’s so tired,  and yet there’s no rest to be had.  jadzia simply exists,  and maybe she should feel encouraged at the heat that rises with every word,  but she’s not.  she’s not anything really.   “i can’t do my job,  i can hardly remember our relationship,  and i’m so alone.  there were eight other lives that were a part of me,”   each host and dax themselves,  and she misses them all desperately,   “and now they’re gone  —  and i went with them  —  do you have any idea what that feels like?  because i truly doubt that you do,”

Ever since kira arrived in @ltcmdrdax​ quarters they’ve been seated in a relative silence aside from the muted shuffling of devices and the sound of predictable footsteps. kira nerys never felt a love like what lenara and dax had but it doesn’t take much for her to know how dejected she must feel at the prospect of never seeing her former wife again. 

she would never tell jadzia out of her own volition but there was and perhaps still is a part of her that felt a twinge of melancholy upon realizing that she and jadzia don’t have much in common ——jadzia’s a trill and kira’s bajoran. jadzia excelled at sciences and mathematics whilst kira would probably die if she had to rely on either of those skills to survive. in other words, they were more dissimilar than they were similar.

she doesn’t regret encouraging jadzia to seek out closure from a life that once ended abruptly —— even if it meant potentially losing her. after all, love isn’t and never would be a competition and kira knows that she’d sooner take the pain than to gatekeep jadzia’s heart from seeking happiness. 

yet, here they are in her quarters in such a sullen mood.

and kira couldn’t bear to see this. 

“ You haven’t said a word since i’ve gotten here.  ”  that’s about as good as an icebreaker as it’s gonna get. kira turns the screen of her PADD off, torso leaning forward as her hands clasp.  “  If there’s anything i could do for you — anything... i’ll do it for you.  "

a sense of déjà vu greeted her as she walked these strange halls; it wasn’t the cardassian architecture which decorated her dreams which triggered this feeling, it was the eyes. everywhere she turned, the same look which had once followed her around the enterprise, was perched on the faces of the bajoran and starfleet officers here.

ro laren, court-martialed twice, cannot be trusted. and those are just the nice things they say about her. traitor, terrorist, tense. there were a lot of ways to talk badly of her starting with the letter t. it didn’t matter. 

once again, starfleet was at a bind, and the bajorans were also unsuccessful in finding someone with her particular set of talents to assist. walking into ops, she was quickly ushered past the other officers into the transporter. the runabout ganges was cramped, but luckily there would only be one person going with her to one of the last remaining maquis outposts, only one to overpower later if needed. “ @ltcmdrdax​. are we ready? ” only taking one step out of the transporter, she spared a glance, which might have carried a bit of envy, at the lieutenant’s starfleet uniform. in bajoran red, she was representing the country she never knew.
