What Rhymes with Chest Hair (pt 2)
Steve is around more.
He was around before, swinging by to pick up Eddie for movies or drives to D&D or physical therapy.
Only now Steve’s around the same way as Wayne’s wall calendar or Eddie’s miniatures. Steve’s around like the wallpaper, the couch, the magnets on the fridge, or the mugs across the kitchen’s back wall.
He’s a fixture. A part of their little home.
Ever since the phone call, Steve’s made a point of drifting closer and closer to Eddie’s orbit, and bits of Steve begin to exist everywhere Wayne turns. Suddenly there’s an extra toothbrush in a cup by the bathroom sink, Nike’s by the door, cans of hairspray in the hall closet.
Eddie’s sunflower petals were still pressed in the pages of books, a red sticky hand was at his bedside.
And new items appear, too. New little tokens Eddie collects like a magpie. A mood ring from a gumball machine, a new set of paintbrushes set to dry on a newspaper, a collection of notes stuck to the fridge in Steve’s handwriting (all of them mundane and ordinary; reminders for dates and times and medication schedules, and Eddie keeps each and every one of them close).
But now, when Steve hands them over, his eyes meet Wayne’s, and he smiles. A secret thing between them.
I like your son, it says. I hope I can be enough for him.
Wayne nods his head back, always. You’re all he wants. He hopes Steve can hear that, somehow.
To watch Eddie fall in love is a privilege Wayne nearly lost. It’s sweet. Simple. Full of kindness and care and pink faces and twirled hair. His boy is wonderful. And deserving.
There was just one issue.
His wonderful, deserving kid wasn’t fucking getting it.

On the first Saturday after The Phone Call, Eddie comes back home from Gareths with a pink tinge across his face that doesn’t slip past Wayne. While Eddie shucks off his sneakers, Wayne peeks out the window. In the driveway Wayne watches Steve back out the driveway. He catches Wayne’s eyes and throws him a wave and then heads off down the road.
“Steve drop you off?”
“Mmhm,” says Eddie, picking at the tight knot of laces.
“You could’ve called me,” says Wayne. “If you needed a ride back home.”
Eddie swallows and pauses untying his shoes. “I didn’t call him.”
“You didn’t-”
“He sat in on band practice.” Eddie says it quickly, ducking his head as if Wayne might not notice he’d dropped that little gem onto the floor. “He asked if he could last week.”
“Oh?”
Eddie pulled off one sneaker, and then the other. He rose up but still didn’t look at Wayne.
“Did he like it?”
Wayne finally gets a peek at Eddie’s eyes under his bangs, though most of his face vanishes anyway when his kid pulls hair in front of his smile. “He told me I was really good.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Amazing,” Eddie says, in what Wayne would call a swoon. “That’s what he said. He wants a private concert, he said, sometime. Told me he wanted to learn a little if I would teach him.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah.” Eddie drops his hair and laughs. His eyes sparkle. “The guys couldn’t even believe it. That Ste-eee-eve Harrington was there to see me! But he was and he sat down and clapped after every song and-” He pauses. The sparkle in his eyes shuts off as he watches Wayne’s face soften into a smile. “Wait. Wait.”
“Eddie-”
“No. I know what you’re going to say. And it’s- he’s not like that, Wayne.”
“I’m just saying-”
“He’s not.” Eddie looks moments from stomping his foot. “He’s just. He’s so great and I can’t. I won’t. I just.” He sucks in a breath and lets out a groan, turning on his foot and stalking away to the backyard, slamming the sliding door.
It slides open and he stalks back in. “And I can’t even smoke anymore!” he snaps
“I quit, too.” Wayne pats his chest. “Lungs have never felt better.”
“At least you still can poison your lungs.”
Wayne snorts and hopes next time might fare better.

Eee thank you <3 I'm just gonna do the first two cause I wrote Home SO long ago idk what I even remember about it lol. No Choir I came up with the title after I'd written it but the song No Choir by Florence & the Machine is really what I think of when I think about post-series Sam, just this quiet, uneventful kind of happiness that never makes the pain or the loneliness or suffering go away, but it helps you get by, day by day. Song below if you don't know it :)

The aspect of portraying Sam's disability was really important to me, in terms of it feeling realistic to how Sam would deal with/process becoming physically disabled, and in terms of being the kind of portrayal I myself, as a person with chronic pain and chronic illness, would want to read. The part with having Sam thinking about the idea of having a customised cane is maybe my favourite little detail in terms of a small part of Sam coming more to terms with his disability, and also the ways mobility aids are extensions of people's bodies. The fact that it's Amelia in this is almost purely for my own enjoyment lol, but it did shape HOW I wrote the fic, the final product could only possibly have been her. I really wanted her to feel like a person and not just there as a "blurry wife" fill in, I think I'd like to write something in this verse from her point of view at some point. The way I think of her being is also a perfect foil to the relationship Sam's used to where he's "cared for" in ways that feel smothering and infantilising, and where the care often doesn't extend to Sam's actual needs. The scene where she's left to go get ready for her shift, but leaving the mug of tea and the note for Sam, reminding him to eat, I think, really exemplifies this. I do have a whole little world in my head mapped out for this fic, and I'm sure I will revisit at some point, I have an old lady cat that they adopt that I want to introduce <3 (she terroises the dogs, dotes on Sam). The scenes between Sam and DJ are extremely precious to me, particularly the ending with Sam joining in the colouring. With the exception of Rabbit, I don't tag my fic "autistic Sam", partly because I think that implies I'm writing a "AU" where Sam is autistic, where to me Sam being autistic is inseparable from his canon self. That is not me saying that Sam is "canonically autistic" because he's not, in the sense that he was not intentionally written that way, and I don't want to give the writers credit for something they didn't do lol. But to me, if you are writing Sam accurately to how he is in canon, he will be austistic/read as autistic. I don't know if that distinction makes sense, but it's how I think of it.

As I said in the notes for that fic I wanted to find a way of combining Sam and Archaeology that wasn't something as straightforward as him taking it as an elective at Stanford. Mostly I wanted to work out what aspect of archaeology I thought would appeal to Sam the most, and think about that as a conduit to Sam's internal voice.
I'm not a bones person myself (I'm a materials specialist so glass, ceramics, and metals), but I thought that bones were something that Sam could relate to what he's already doing as a hunter, and were something that could provide a nice contrast between "digging up a body to destroy it" vs "carefully excavating and learning about the remains" (of course not actually that simple of a dichotomy, there are a lot of important ethical issues around excavation of human remains, but he's a kid, and it could get boring real fast if I turned it into a discussion about that lol).
The conversation between Sam and Dean on the phone was probably my favourite aspect to write, I wanted to hit just the right balance between the deep love and affection for each other, and the ways in which Sam's exclusion (as inclusion as aliusfrater would put it) make the conversation also kind of empty, there is a physical distance between them, but also an emotional one, and a gap that can never quite be bridged because Sam's role nesessitates that he always remains just on the outside.
I also wanted to infuse the whole thing with a profound sense of loneliness, a really key aspect to me of writing any Sam, but particularly young Sam.
