The Swan Maidens
Artist: Walter Crane (English, 1845-1915)
Date: 1894
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Private Collection
Description
The myth of the swan maidens has been found in folklore under many different guises and within cultures across the globe. Tales of swan maidens stretch back to antiquity in Europe. Whilst many interpretations of the tale abound, the story follows that a hunter went down to a lake in order to shoot ducks. Instead of finding ducks he instead stumbled upon seven swan maidens, who had all removed their swan skins in order to swim in the lake. The hunter then proceeds to steal the skin of the youngest and prettiest maiden, who he then leads back to his cabin to make his wife. Though versions of the tale differ considerably, in most iterations the swan maiden finds her skin and flies back to her sisters, sometimes being followed by her contrite husband. Here Crane depicts the early part of the tale, as the seven swan maidens are shown bathing and in various degrees of transformation.

The Coming of the Maidens as Wives for the Settlers
Artist: George Cooke (American, 1793 - 1849)
Date: ca. 1830
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia, United States
Description
The Coming of the Maidens as Wives for the Settlers, painted around 1830, represents the young artist's desire to work in the more elevated category of history painting. The subject matter is distinctly regional and depicts the Virginia Company's initiative around 1619-20 to recruit young women from England as brides for the men of the struggling colony in Jamestown. Married couples earned the right to build a house for themselves, while bachelors continued to bunk in barracks. Cooke has chosen the moment of arrival, and the depiction reflects none of the harsh realities of the actual experience. The ownership of the painting also has prominent Virginia ties. It was commissioned by William Henry Clark to honor his marriage to Elvira Henry, who was Patrick Henry's granddaughter. It originally hung in the living room of Bannister Lodge in Halifax County and descended to Alpheus Chewning III, who generously donated it to the Museum.

‘The Maiden from Afar’ From the Poem by Schiller
Artist: Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (Danish, 1783 – 1853)
Date: 1830
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Hirschsprung Collection, Copenhagen, Denmark
Description
This poem presents an enchanting figure, a maiden who appears annually in a valley, bringing inexplicable gifts and blessings. Her origins and purpose remain enigmatic, suggesting a connection to a realm beyond the ordinary.
The poem's Romantic sensibilities are evident in its portrayal of nature as a source of wonder and mystery. The maiden's gifts, "mysterious fruits and flowers" from a "serener sun," evoke a longing for a lost Eden or a glimpse of the divine.
The Maiden from Afar by Friedrich von Schiller
Within a vale, each infant year, When earliest larks first carol free, To humble shepherds cloth appear A wondrous maiden, fair to see. Not born within that lowly place - From whence she wandered, none could tell; Her parting footsteps left no trace, When once the maiden sighed farewell.
And blessed was her presence there - Each heart, expanding, grew more gay; Yet something loftier still than fair Kept man's familiar looks away. From fairy gardens, known to none, She brought mysterious fruits and flowers - The things of some serener sun - Some Nature more benign than ours.
With each her gifts the maiden shared - To some the fruits, the flowers to some; Alike the young, the aged fared; Each bore a blessing back to home. Though every guest was welcome there, Yet some the maiden held more dear, And culled her rarest sweets whene'er She saw two hearts that loved draw near.

The Minstrel
Artist: Kate Elizabeth Bounce (English, 1856-1927)
Date: Exhibited 1890
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Private collection
Description
When this painting was exhibited at the Birmingham Society of Artists in 1890 the subject was described thus; 'Through the narrow streets of a medieval town the glee-maiden pursues her way, touching her mandolin as she goes, self-absorbed and heedless of the gossiping remarks and the wondering glances of those who have clustered at their doors to see her pass.' (Birmingham Daily Post, 19 September 1890, p. 4). The critic complimented Bunce for her 'thoughtful production… wrought out with genuine artistic feeling'.
