'In Time has become an unexpected hit on Netflix 12 years after its release. The 2011 sci-fi movie, which was written and directed by Gattaca's Andrew Niccol, starred Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, and Cillian Murphy. In Time is set in a world where humans don't age past 25 years old. At that point time is then used as currency, and they spend or earn the remaining years of their life, meaning that the rich live unnaturally long and the poor typically can't afford to live far beyond their 30s.
Netflix has revealed their Top 10 highest-performing English-language movies for the week of September 18 through September 24. The sci-fi movie placed shockingly high on the chart, taking No. 3 thanks to 5.7 million individual views accruing a total of 10.4 million hours viewed despite a dismal 37% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is the second time the movie has spent a week on the Netflix chart, though the first time took place before 2023, so the weeks are not consecutive.
The In Time Cast Is Even More Famous In 2023
One possible reason for In Time exploding back onto the Netflix chart is the fact that the ensemble cast of the movie is star-studded. While the stars were buzzy at the time, they have gone on to even bigger success since then. This includes Timberlake, who was nominated for an Oscar for his song "Can't Stop the Feeling!," which was written for the movie Trolls...
His co-star Seyfried has also achieved incredible success in the intervening years. She followed her 2021 Oscar nomination for David Fincher's Mank with an Emmy win for her role as Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout. Murphy has also risen in prominence since his role in In Time, as he is the star of Oppenheimer, which became one of the biggest movies of 2023 when it opened alongside Barbie on July 21, kicking off one of the most robust box office periods since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down theaters in early 2020...'

"The Killer" Spoiler-Free Review - ScreenHub Entertainment
BE ADVISED – This movie can so easily go unnoticed for what it really is while you’re scrolling on Netflix on a quiet evening, so stay alert! Although the title and overall marketing assets may suggest this is another generic action romp that the streamer has produced, The Killer is actually the work of one of the few masters of suspense cinema we have left today: David Fincher, the successful…

Came across this article while looking for more information on Tom Burke's character in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Tumblr media
Tom Burke Replaces Yahya Abdul-Mateen II In George Miller’s ‘Mad Max’ Spinoff ‘Furiosa’
The film marks the first major studio film for Burke, who played Orson Welles in Netflix’s Mank and has credits including The Souvenir and the upcoming pic The Wonder starring Florence Pugh.
youtube
The movie looks great but with all that hair, beards, and masks everywhere, I could hardly recognise Chris Hemsworth in the trailer, let alone Tom Burke. 😆
[As for more information on his character, there was none: zero, zip, zilch, nada. Guess we'll have a wait a bit longer to find out more.]

what did you think about ripley? The netflix show if you watched it, not the character
only seen the first few episodes and i think i liked it more than most people i know, but not by a huge amount. it's certainly very beautiful to look it, it's one of the best looking black and white productions in a while (cough mank looked like ass cough), and i do love the cold detached, alienation of how it's filmed, how intensely you do not feel like you belong much in the same way ripley does not belong, much the same as he is is cold, unemotional, detached.
I also deeply respect andrew's decision to play the character so differently to how damon did. i think it's an interesting portrayal, the ice cold outer layer with this vibrating anger buried deep underneath it. he's one of my favourite actors, I'm biased, but i like what he's done with the place.
that's about all i have good or bad to say about it. while i think the coldness is interesting in a clinical sense, there's so little in the show to become meaningfully attached to. none of the other characters are that interesting or well-acted, and while i certainly don't think anyone going after philip seymour hoffman is going to have a good shot at doing it well, the actor they chose to play freddie is by far the weakest of the cast and that just makes it stand out more. on top of that, the actor playing dickie is not particularly charming. i think the intended point of the show is that ripley here is a cold, calculating predator who is dispatching dickie out of a sense of need to cling to his newfound wealth rather than the mania and fear that gripped damon's ripley, but there's so little narrative thrust or tension that it makes things feel... emotionally underserved.
i do need to finish the series at some point because i am curious about how it continues but i feel extremely lukewarm towards it at this stage. i think this ripley is fighting a two sided battle in that the original is extremely highly regarded, but one of the best shows of the last twenty years, better call saul, is also about lying criminal conmen and is both nail-bitingly tense and deeply emotionally complex. Ripley really gets lost in a sea of unfavorable comparisons.

usually i dump my movie talk on the other blog, but this is part movie/oscars talk, part me responding to a weird article i saw in the wrap, and it's going to be a wall of text. so this is where i'm putting it instead.
so, the oscar nominations came out last friday. emelia perez took home 13 nominations, which ties it for the second most of all time. emelia perez. number two on that list with so many greats... uhh. the brutalist and wicked both scored 10 noms, and the other best picture noms like conclave, dune 2, and a complete unknown grabbed a few each. pretty standard mix. i'll get to emelia perez in a second. much controversy about that.
a few things that jumped out to me: sebastian stan & jeremy strong getting acting noms for the apprentice even though it kind of got buried at the box office last year. denis villeneuve & jon m chu didn't get director noms, and i know the fans of both those movies are pretty outraged about that. and really like the lack of big pictures vying for the top awards, set aside wicked and dune 2. i guess wicked could still win best picture, but i don't think it's super likely. compare this to last year, when oppenheimer had grossed almost $1bil worldwide and was heavily, heavily favored to win best picture. barbie was also in the mix for a lot of awards but didn't end up winning any.
there were certainly some movies i thought were snubbed! i don't like when my movies are snubbed! civil war was one of my favorite movies of last year. zero nominations. nonsense! furiosa i felt deserved more than zero nominations, at least in the technical categories. challengers did not deserve zero nominations. nosferatu probably should have been up for some of the bigger prizes. i think nosferatu should have been a best picture nominee. it's a relatively big movie. people like it. why not? but overall it's a pretty solid lineup in what was otherwise a weak year for movies. except for the bonkers nomination total for emelia perez. this post is going to be me spewing word vomit until i eventually galaxy brain into an explanation for how this happened.
a historical analogy worth considering momentarily before we really dive into this – in his book, "pictures at a revolution" which is about the 40th academy awards, mark harris pointed out that it was very odd to see an old fashioned movie like dr dolittle (1967) up for best picture against the likes of bonnie & clyde and the graduate. that was a big year of change. lots of new, appealing movies were coming out, and there you had this ridiculous old musical that was a huge bomb at the box office. nobody liked it. however, it was 20th century fox's Big Award Season Movie that year. the studio leaned on its massive rolodex to secure that nomination.
the oscars then, as they are now, in part about back scratching. and nobody has a bigger back to scratch than netflix. they're producing more stuff than anyone else, so any time they have their movie, it gets nominated for lots of things. it's why every year, you have some prestige-y picture like mank, or roma, or the power of the dog rack up a bunch of nominations only to lose in virtually every category before it disappears into the streaming morass and nobody ever thinks about watching them ever again. emilia perez is this year's submission for the forgettable morass. it seems to have more momentum than any of those movies, however, which is kind of interesting.
at least some of that momentum stems in part from the TOTALLY INSANE idea that voting for the french musical about the trans cartel boss is a way to surreptitiously stick it to donald trump. at least, that's the way that steve pond in the wrap decided to put it – "Oscar Nominations: Love for ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘The Apprentice’ Could Make Oscar Night Donald Trump’s Nightmare" the implication here kind of being that not voting for this disastrous mess of a musical signals cowardice in the face of authoritarianism or some such.
i cannot emphasize enough that this is the absolute worst way to look at emilia perez. there's nothing that could play into trump's hands more than the great satan of hollywood giving their biggest honor to a french musical about a trans cartel boss. you can imagine the truth socials he would fire off about the sicko degenerates in la la land/hollyweird who hate the good common people of america blah blah blah. now, avoiding this response is also not a good reason not to award emilia perez. we don't want to go down that road either. a good reason not to award emilia perez is that it's *checks what i wrote last time* schlocky nonsense with bad songs and a bunch of really awful performances.
the two significant performances in it (karla sofia gascon, zoe saldana) are fairly good. it's just an insane... it's insane. i'm sorry. just. the whole thing. it's bonkers but it's not transcendently bonkers and the idea that it should be adopted as any sort of symbol of resistance or even any sort of particular meaning or insight is such a wild act of projection completely unrelated to the text itself. i think it would be so radically self-discrediting to embrace it as meaningful in any way that i hope people avoid it. it has no politics. it has no psychological insight. the fact that this is one of the most oscar nominated movies of all time just makes it feel like hollywood is having an episode.
i'm someone who's inclined to say "yes, jon voight, sylvester stallone, and mel gibson should parachute into hollywood as a three-man strike thing and set things right" but this movie winning best picture would kind of sell me on that. don't go bananas for this movie! it's not worth it! it would not produce any sort of useful reaction. it is not a useful movie to promote trans rights. and most people agree with me on this!
i think part of the reason why i'm so flabbergasted about this is because if there's a strong normie lib constituency for this movie, i'm not seeing it. and if there was going to be a strong normie lib constituency for a movie, why not conclave? that movie's take on gender identity is, in a way, sort of trickier than the one in emilia perez, but it's much more a statement about inherent faith in decency and kindness and how we should support people who are victimized. it's the much more sort of normie lib movie in sensibility so i just can't get my mind around either the political or aesthetic response to emilia perez.
i mean, maybe the support for it is all happening on threads or bluesky. i don't know where the audience for that movie – which presumably exists – is hanging out and making its case. i haven't seen anyone defend it. and maybe that says something about the fragmentation of movie twitter or lib cultural discourse than it does about anything else.
and sort of tangentially related to this: how sensitive to controversy are the oscars these days anyway?
this is the sort of movie that, if it came out 10 years ago, there would have been huge viral campaigns about how this movie doesn't represent mexican people. "mexican people reject this movie. trans people reject this movie. how can the industry celebrate this movie that is nominally about this movie that the groups themselves have rejected?" and that conversation simply does not seem to exist this year.
it's hard to prove. there's not a survey number i can point to but you can see it in box office numbers there's decreasing cultural influence of hollywood proper – the big studios, big releases, award season hollywood, prestige hollywood. the expensive feature film from an auteur or a name brand actor or whatever that used to be part of water cooler conversation back when people went to offices don't enter into those conversations at nearly the same level. i'm not saying no one in the world does this, but it's much more of a niche hobby now to be a movie fan than it would have been in the 80s or 90s or even the mid 00s. this is partially a result of media fragmentation and also the collapse of theater going and other issues with hollywood that have happened because of the pandemic and the strikes. one of the reasons why this was such a weak year for movies was because there were 6 months where nothing was being produced.
all of this is happening in the context of a pretty significant cultural shift that's partly but not entirely political. if you've been reading political punditry for the past week and a half or so, there have been a half a dozen if not more prominent, widely shared columns and feature essays about the vibe shift, trump's cultural power, the rising cultural valence of the right, which is tied up with big tech, elon musk, mark zuckerberg changing his hair and wearing gold chains and going on joe rogan to talk about how companies need more masculine energy & embrace aggression & the HR-ification of everything. ezra klein wrote the most perceptive and most shared piece about this in the nyt. the thesis of the piece is that trump's victory at the polls was actually not that big – about 1.5pts – but it feels like an overwhelming cultural knockout victory. i think a lot of people are feeling that and it's not exactly clear what all that portends.
so, to see emilia perez get a nearly historic number of nominations and to see it explicitly framed by writers like the one in the wrap, it's like the vehicle that you have. it's the one button you can push. i don't even know if it's true that this is the reason why people are supporting it, but for the sake of conversation i'll assume that this is correct and a major reason driving support for that movie. but it's not a good vehicle for a sort of fuck-you politics, though i guess it makes its own sort of sense that it's this and not conclave or even wicked.
so maybe hollywood has already discredited itself over the past several years, which is unfortunate in so many ways. there are movies that could be championed here that are quite left leaning or progressive. it's possible to do this in a way that isn't just shooting yourself in the foot. but that's not what's happening. i don't know if it's a last gasp, but a sort of desperate floundering attempt to project desperate cultural political power and... they're gonna fail. it's not gonna work. the fact that the outrage is next to nothing is a sign that nobody cares anymore.
this is a doomed endavor by an industry that sees itself as an arbiter of cultural power but no longer has any itself.
yeah. that sounds right.

The Killer, David Fincher's new thriller movie starring Michael Fassbender, has debuted to a Rotten Tomatoes score that handily beats most 2023 Netflix films. Telling the story of an assassin who sets out to take revenge against his employers after a job gone wrong, The Killer continues Fincher's partnership with Netflix after 2020's Mank. The film, which reunites Fincher with Se7en screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, had its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September.

'The new Netflix limited series Ripley is entirely in black and white for very deliberate reasons. The psychological thriller is based on the renowned 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley by celebrated novelist Patricia Highsmith, the first of her 5-part "Ripley" series that also includes Ripley Under Ground and Ripley's Game. Ripley's cast is led by an exceptionally chilling Andrew Scott (Fleabag, Black Mirror, All of Us Strangers) as the enigmatic Thomas Ripley, a con artist living in New York in the early 1960s. Steven Zallian, the acclaimed screenwriter of Schindler's List, American Gangster, and The Irishman, wrote and directed the entire 8-episode miniseries.
Ripley is given an unexpected job to locate an old friend named Richard 'Dickie' Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn) who's avoiding his responsibilities in Atrani, a luxurious coastal city in Italy. Ripley, funded by Dickie's father, travels to Atrani where he encounters Dickie and his girlfriend Marge Sherwood, played by Dakota Fanning. The Talented Mr. Ripley was previously adapted in the 1999 film written and directed by Anthony Minghella (The English Patient), in which Matt Damon portrayed Ripley, Jude Law played Dickie and Gwenyth Paltrow plays Marge. The Talented Mr. Ripley has been adapted several times for film and television, but none have been shot completely in monochrome until Zallian's Ripley.
Ripley's Show Creator Envisioned The Story In Black & White Due To The Book's Cover Photo
Zallian's goal was to create an incredibly faithful adaptation of the novel
Zallian was inspired to shoot his Ripley adaptation entirely in black and white as a way to honor the original vision of Highsmith's novel. As he was developing the series, he was inspired by the monochrome book cover of his edition of The Talented Mr. Ripley and began to envision the series entirely through that lens as he wrote it. Zallian told Vanity Fair, “The edition of the Ripley book I had on my desk had an evocative black-and-white photograph on the cover. As I was writing, I held that image in my mind. Black and white fits this story—and it’s gorgeous.”
Zallian's main intention of the monochrome in Ripley is to provide a more faithful interpretation of the novel. Unlike some of the previous iterations of Highsmith's "Ripley" series, Zallian's adaptation appears more dark and unsettling from the Ripley trailer alone. The decision to shoot entirely in black and white is also a nod to the time period in which Ripley is set, amplifying the fact that the story takes place more than 60 years ago. David Fincher made a similar stylistic choice with his 2020 Netflix film Mank. Aside from his Academy Award-winning work on There Will Be Blood, Ripley's Director of Photography, Robert Elswit, previously shot the celebrated monochrome film Good Night, and Good Luck.
Ripley's Black & White Format Fits The Story's Dark Themes & Genre
The gray of the ocean & pitch blackness of blood are perfect for Ripley
The black-and-white aesthetic of Zallian's Ripley aligns seamlessly with the overall tone and themes of the story. The Netflix adaptation appears to be substantially darker and more matter-of-fact in its design than previous Ripley adaptations, particularly the 1999 adaptation with a more charismatic performance from Damon. The monochrome also emphasizes the film noir feel of the production, drawing similarities to classics of the genre such as The Maltese Falcon (1941), Double Indemnity (1944), and Strangers on a Train (1951), which was also based on a novel by Highsmith.
From the use of black and white in the trailer alone, Ripley often blends into the world around him, heightening the mystery around his character's ability to dissolve into environments with ease. The range of various shades of gray in Ripley creates an interesting composition thanks to the advancement of modern digital cameras that are able to capture more detail in degrees of light and darkness. The gray of the ocean and the pitch blackness of blood make for a more ominous and impactful visual display in Ripley. Most series don't have an organic reason for filming in black and white, but Ripley is exactly the kind of production that makes the best use of modern monochrome.
Netflix's Ripley Being In Black & White Highlights Its Major Differences From The 1999 Movie
Netflix's Ripley is a much darker psychological drama compared to the Damon film
The use of black and white throughout the entire 8-part series creates a stark contrast between Netflix's Ripley and the classic 1999 movie. The movie puts a lot of emphasis on the vivid color and lavishness of coastal Italy and Dickie's life, which is a major difference between the 1999 film and Highsmith's novel. Additionally, the 1999 film's interpretation of one particular death seems to be more out of pure desperation and passion than something premeditated, which avoids a more sinister theme of the book. Ripley makes scenes of this nature more dreary and emotionally devoid, making it more of an eerie psychological drama.'

Welles vs. Hearst
RKO281 (Benjamin Ross, 1999) Meine Wertung: 7/10 (Imdb 7,0/10)
Tumblr media
English version below

English version:
A good year ago, David Fincher's Mank hit Netflix and went down without comment. A film that revolves around the creation of Citizen Kane is first of all interesting for every cineaste. Fincher does not focus on Orson Welles, but on screenwriter Herman Mankiewitcz. A trick that doesn't work here. The film is boring and pointless.
The HBO production RKO281 (the title refers to Citizen Kane's production number at RKO), on the other hand, focuses on newspaper mogul Randolph Hearst and Orson Welles. The underrated Liev Schreiber gives a charismatic Welles, John Malkovich is Mank, Roy Scheider producer Schaefer. The reliably good James Cromwell plays Hearst with a lot of depth and doesn't make him seem completely unsympathetic. Melanie Griffith is Hearst's partner Marion Davis. Also of note is the always good Fiona Shaw here as scandal reporter Hedda Hopper. So a big star line-up for a TV movie with just 86 minutes running time. And they all do their best and the film acquires more narrative depth than was to be expected. Whether the enmity between Goliath Hearst and David Welles actually happened - who knows. But who cares about the truth of a story if it is well told?
