Tumblr media
first!summer!mari who drags you to go pick berries with you, only to end up with very little because she was talking the whole time.
first!summer!mari who still has a strict hair washing routine. Even though her shampoo and conditioner are her greatest treasure, she shares with you. (makes sure you only take dime sized portions)
first!summner!mari who tried to start some sort of Gossip Girl scandal by carving initials together in a heart on the cabin. Coach Scott found out and told everyone.
first!winter!mari who slightly hints for you to pick a certain card so you get the easiest chore despite her being loyal to Lottie/the wilderness.
first!winter!mari who if the spots closest to the fire are taken she’ll give you her infamous yellow yellowjackets hoodie. (will kill you if you stain it.)
first!winter!mari who after eating Javi the guilt finally settled in and she was inconsolable. (even sadder than when Selena died. And she had been CRYING when that happened.)
second!summer!mari who is shit talking Shauna 24/7, and ALWAYS asks for your input.
second!summer!mari who always adds a little extra food to your plate or garnishes it to be all pleasant for the eyes.
second!summer!mari who decorates your hair with flowers she found while picking berries.
second!winter!mari who will only take the furs that are aesthetically pleasing. (they have the resources to cater to her needs)
second!winter!mari who stays in your hut because “psycho ass Shauna” might murder her.
second!winter!mari who while she’s being hunted was more scared of Gen or You killing her than she was scared of Shauna.

yellowjackets swimwear headcanons? 👙🌺
(specifically for mari, lottie, jackie, shauna, van , tai, melissa and akilah bc not enough people talk about my girl 💗)
— YELLOWJACKETS SUMMER SWIMWEAR HEADCANONS
including: jackie. shauna. lottie. tai. van. mari. melissa. akilah.
Tumblr media
JACKIE TAYLOR
Tumblr media
⋆˚࿔ jackie is one hundred percent showing up in a pink bikini!! she picked the set out to match her gold necklace, maybe even her nails & it either has bows, ruffles, or some kind of floral pattern.
SHAUNA SHIPMAN
Tumblr media
⋆˚࿔ i love her but shauna is the most “basic” beach girl out of the group, and i mean that lovingly (blame it on the sophie nelisse beach pic). she probably owns one plain-colored (black? navy blue? a very dark shade of red?) bikini that she’s had for four summers in a row.
LOTTIE MATTHEWS
Tumblr media
⋆˚࿔ maybe i’m being influenced by that one bts pic, but i’m totally seeing lottie in light green!! like mint or sage tones, maybe something ribbed with little details?? i could also see her in a matching set with a little sheer wrap or something!!
TAISSA TURNER
Tumblr media
⋆˚࿔ tai & van are team tits out at the beach, idc. tai probably wears some plain bikini bottoms and goes topless with zero shame (idk about the us, but this is SO normal in germany, nobody gives a fuck 😭😭)
VAN PALMER
Tumblr media
⋆˚࿔ again, much like tai, van probably can’t be bothered with a proper top half the time. but also!! post-top surgery van?? i know you guys see the vision!! they both have something they can just throw on when the group goes for ice cream, though: van an oversized shirt, tai a super loose summer dress in matching colors!!
NAT SCATORCCIO
Tumblr media
⋆˚࿔ listen. nat in a red bra → nat in a red bikini. it really is that simple!! to be fair, this girl looks criminally good in red, so?? also, she’s got a pair of shorts she wears (chat…nat with a happy trail…? is this a good time to bring back the yj bush discourse or…?) when she’s not in the water!!
MARI IBARRA
Tumblr media
⋆˚࿔ i’m pretty sure i’m basing this on that one scene where mari is lounging in what looks like calvin klein underwear? or was that an actual bikini? either way, i’m convinced that’s the energy she brings to the beach, too: some minimalist & sleek two-piece, probably black or dark grey, with a triangle top.
MELISSA HAT
Tumblr media
⋆˚࿔ okay but why am i lowkey getting a rikki-from-h2o vibe?? anyway, melissa is absolutely pulling up to the beach with her hair in those two braids and shit!! also: that fuckass hat. how did i forget to include it in the pics?? she’s obviously wearing that, too.
AKILAH
Tumblr media
⋆˚࿔ i feel like akilah brings colorful swimwear to the function!! i could see her wearing really vibrant colors and patterns to the beach, floral or coral or something like that?? maybe even matching shorts and/or tops for said ice cream runs??
masterlist.

Could I maybe request a Mari x Reader fic? Maybe them trying to stay warm during the winter nights and/or just being extremely close and the other yjs catching on?
tysm for ur rq anon!! i hope i managed to writw what u wanted n like it<33
Mari Ibarra x reader
summary: just how u and mari started to get really close and be each others safe space when things got rough during winter<3
notes: Missing mari like a mf to the point winter is a trigger word for me cuz she😭died😭during😭winter😭also wilderness has been hella boring without the only latina diva frfr
˚ ༘♡ ⋆。˚ ❀˚ ༘♡ ⋆。˚ ❀˚ ༘♡ ⋆。˚ ❀˚ ༘♡ ⋆。˚ ❀˚ ༘♡ ⋆。˚ ❀˚ ༘♡ ⋆。˚ ❀˚ ༘♡ ⋆˚
༘⋆ if being stranded in the wilderness wasn't already enough, when winter came everything got worst, jackie’s sudden death changed everything, it was obvious to tell after that how everyone was different, the numb feeling of losing someone very dear was still fresh, you could feel it was just some few days ago since laura’s accident, and jackie now being gone put a toll on everyone’s mental health again, especially Mari, who was in charge of the food, in a more realistic way, the one in charge to keep everyone alive.
༘⋆ the bear’s meat won't last till spring, shauna always taking way too long to bring it, everyone stressed and being forced to keep inside the cabin, and especially, not letting you both have time alone.
༘⋆ you and mari werent the closest, but if theres one thing you were “grateful” for the crash, was that it got you closer, she's such a sweet girl, funny, lovely, fearless, always so responsible with the chores, she was just so cool it made you wonder why you never befriended her before everything.
༘⋆ but there was something about her that made you heart soft, maybe its the way she isn't afraid to stand up for her word even if got her some icky looks from shauna, or how shes with you, kind, always including you in everything and never letting you be alone, whatever it was, it just made you fall even harder for her… and it was the same for Mari.
༘⋆ there was still some fear of being out to everyone, even when tai and van decided to came out in that attempt of party, so you decided to be closer when no one was watching, it was more peaceful and comfortable, especially at nights.
༘⋆ Mari’s favourite time is when everyone was asleep, its only at that time when got to hold you during night without fear of someone noticing, just you and her being closer till your noses rubbed together, small talks sometimes discussing what could have happened if the plane never crashed, how she missed slushies, and promised you that as soon as you got rescued she’s gonna take you to try the best cheese burgers.
༘⋆ thats why after winter came mari changed, not being able to be alone with you and just pretend that everythings fine made her more annoyed, she refused to sleep together because it was “too risky now” but you know how bad she missed being able to hold each other under the covers.
༘⋆ days passed and at this point you didnt care anymore, that same night after shauna came with the great news that “we’re out of meat” and made mari more annoyed, you decided to crawl to her mat while everyone was in their fifth hungry dream and just finally be by her side again
༘⋆ it surprised her but you neither know that neither of you could go more days without eachother
“wait what are you doing??”
“just wanted to be with you, and no i dont care if someone sees us”
༘⋆ she giggled but didn't make an effort to get you out of there, instead she just hugged you more closely, mari just missed you so much to care if tai decided to sleep walk again and get van to chase her and then see you both.
“you know i think i was a little stupid to put our whatever is this in a “”time out”” for fear, i actually dont give a single fuck if someone sees us, winter is less cold like this” giving your nose a sweet kiss she moved closer, now decided and fearless if someone saw you like that
“oh finally? you almost got me praying that you finally admit it” a chuckled escaped her but it was true, how someone who didnt give a single fuck about shauna’s state and still faced her now fear her team finding out she likes girls?
༘⋆ Mari missed this, missed you and she knows she gonna need you more than anything now that winter is about to get more rough for you, for her and for everyone….

The Wilderness Has Chosen (Van Palmer x Reader)(Part 2)
In 2021, you and your wife Van have a 17 year old adopted daughter. When she sneaks out on Halloween night, you end up having to confess to her what really happened back in 1997.
Part 1
Notes:
- fem! reader
- Takes place in season one on Halloween, but SPOILERS for season three are in here
- hallucinations and talk of death
-------------------------------------
I was woken from my sleep to my phone vibrating across the nightstand. Van groaned and rolled over.
I rubbed my eyes and picked it up, seeing Shauna's name across my phone.
"Hello?" I said, my voice groggy.
"Hey. I tried to call Van but she didn't answer."
"Because it's 1 am!" Van snapped, burying her face in the pillow.
"Everything okay?" I asked Shauna.
"Callie snuck out to a party. Marissa's with her."
"Are you serious?" I hissed, throwing the covers off.
"It's bad. They're on molly. And their costumes-" Shauna's voice hitched.
"How bad are the costumes?" I asked, stuffing my slippers on. "Playboy Bunny bad or Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders bad?"
"Just get here. I have them at my house."
After waiting for Van to roll out of bed and into her shoes, we drove in silence for 30 minutes, silently wondering what costume my daughter could be wearing. Also, molly? Where the hell did she get molly? She told me her and Callie were going trick or treating, not to a New Jersey club.
I stormed into Shauna's house and made my way to the kitchen, Van following. I froze in my spot and gasped, and I heard our car keys clatter to the floor from Van's grasp.
There stood Callie and Marissa, sporting matching Yellowjackets soccer jerseys. At first glance, you would assume they were fake. But then I really looked. The fabric was worn, and there was a hole near the armpit of Marissa's shirt.
Mari had ripped her uniform in that spot days before we left for nationals.
"I know-" My throat was closing up. "I know full and well that is not the real jersey."
Marissa's eyes were watery, pupils still dilated from the drugs. I could see it in her eyes that the #10 "Ibarra" uniform was the real deal.
"You're joking. You're actually joking." Van said, grabbing the keys off the ground.
"It was my idea, I'm sorry." Callie said. I turned to look at her. She was dressed as Jackie, but with makeup resembling a corpse. I looked back to Marissa and saw the fake blood on her face.
"I don't give a shit whose idea it was!" I shouted, making everyone jump. "How dare you. These people died. They are dead. You are wearing a dead persons clothing. We had to survive out there, knowing that we would never have our friends back. We got to come home, but they are still out there. We are supposed to preserve and honor their memories, not do drugs and dress up as them for halloween!" I grabbed Marissa's arm. "We are leaving. Shauna, thank you for bringing her home."
"See you later." Jeff sighed out.
"Sit down." I said, pushing Marissa's shoulder down until she was sitting in a chair.
"No." Van said, throwing the car keys in the bowl on the counter. "Go shower. Change. Put the costume on our bed. Then come down here."
Marissa huffed and stormed off. "Sober up while you're at it!" I shouted.
I dropped myself into a chair, covering my eyes with my hands.
Mari's parents gave me her uniform about a week after we came home. I kept all of her belongings in my duffel bag, returning it all when i saw them. Much like Shauna and Jackie's parents, me and Van visited Mari's parents on her birthday and on other random occasions. I'd had the jersey put in a glass frame, with a picture of me and her underneath. It was sophomore year homecoming, and we were wearing sparkly dresses with curled updos. We looked so young, so innocent.
Van put her hand on my shoulder and handed me a beer that I gladly accepted. We sat in silence until our daughter came down the stairs, in pajamas with wet hair framing her face.
"Sit." I said, gesturing across the table. Me and Van sat at the opposite side.
"Go ahead and explain your thought process behind these costumes." Van said.
"Callie-"
I slammed my beer bottle on the table. "I don't give a shit about Callie. Callie is her own person, and I know Shauna is tearing into her right now."
"Why is it so bad?" Marissa shouted. "Why is it taboo to speak about her? I mean, the house is covered in pictures of you and her, but you act like her name is a bad word!"
"It's not." I said. "We talk about her."
Marissa scoffed. "Oh please. You won't even let me have a nickname! Why am I not allowed to use the name 'Mari'? Like she owns it?"
"You-" Van pointed at her. "You do not get to act like this. 'Mar' works just fine. And yeah, we won't let you go by Mari because you are not Mari."
"Then why did you name me after her?"
Dead silence. Van stared off into space. I started to do the same, putting my head down to the table.
"Hey, Y/N."
I snapped my head up. 25 years later and I could still remember that voice.
There stood Mari. She was wearing the same thing she always wore when I hallucinated her: Her white nightgown. Her body was free of wounds, but blood dripped from her hands to the floor.
"I died for you, and here she is, dressing up as me. You think that's okay?" Mari asked, poking my shoulder.
I was careful not to respond. The last thing I needed was for Van to know I was still hallucinating her. I told her it had stopped once we got home, but if anything, it had gotten worse.
"Why don't you talk about me, Y/N?" Mari said, sitting in the chair next to Marissa. I swallowed thickly.
"You're guilty." Mari continued. "I died in your place. And you lied to everyone. Said I went down with the plane, even though you actually cut me up and-"
"Okay, fine." I sternly said, shutting my eyes. When I opened them, Mari was gone, and Van and Marissa were staring at me.
"You wanna talk about Mari? Let's talk about Mari."
"I don't think that's-" Van stammered.
"No, she thinks she can talk about Mari like this? Really? After all she did-" I stood from my seat.
"What did she do?!" Marissa shouted. "You never tell me anything about what really happened."
"Oh, okay." I said, sitting and leaning back in my chair. "Hmm, let's see if I recall. Oh, yeah, it was that time i was supposed to die."
Marissa's face dropped. "What?"
"Natalie was going to call for rescue. Your mom fixed the machine that she used to call." I said, nodding to Van. "So, Natalie climbed the mountains to get service and she called for help. But to do that, we had to distract the people who didn't want to leave."
"Wait, there were people that didn't want to leave?" Marissa said, shocked.
"Yep." Van said, putting her empty beer bottle in between her legs. "Your aunt Tai, Lottie, and Shauna."
"Why?"
"They all knew they didn't have anywhere to go." I said. "Nothing to go back to. But we had something. Your mom rigged the cards so this random girl that we ended up with would pull the queen. But she didn't. I did."
"What happens if you draw the queen?" Marissa asked.
"Don't worry about it." Van said. "Because telling you all this was a bad idea in the first place."
"No. I want to know." Marissa replied.
"You die." I said. Marissa's eyes widened. "Unless someone dies in your place. Mari was trying to distract them to help me get away when she fell into a hunting trap and died."
"Oh." Marissa said.
"You are here today because of Mari. If she hadn't distracted them, your mom would've died and we would've never made it out. But she saved all of us." Van said solemnly.
"What was she like?" Marissa asked after a moments silence.
"God, she was a character." Van said.
I laughed. "She was the best. So funny, too funny sometimes but it didn't matter. And she was always so alive out there. Like, she never dulled. She was always Mari."
"I think I would've liked her." Marissa whispered.
"I think so too. Which is why I'm not okay with you using her name, or wearing her clothes." I said. Marissa bowed her head.
"I mean, really, how did you even do that when it's in our room?" Van asked.
"I did it when you guys were at work and I got home early." Marissa admitted.
"Unbelievable" I scoffed out.
Marissa left to go to bed, and I walked back to our room. Laid on our bed was Mari's uniform, neatly folded. I lifted it and ran my thumbs over the worn yellow #10. I flipped it, laid it flat on the bed, and ran my hands over the "Ibarra" stitched onto the back.
I sat on the bed, holding the uniform. I pressed it to my nose and caught a hint of her floral perfume she used to wear. And that's when the tears started. My chest heaved with my sobs and my tears dripped onto the uniform.
I felt a cold hand set on my arm. I looked up, and it was Mari again, except this time she was dressed different. She was wearing a clean, cute outfit, with her hair and makeup done.
"You look good." I said, sniffling. I looked to the open door, hoping Van wouldn't come in.
"Gee, thanks, just trying something new." Mari cheekily replied.
"You know, I won't forget you if you go. Even if I don't talk about you, I think about you every day. And I wish I could go back and help you." I said, looking into her big, brown eyes.
"Then I'll go." Mari said, wrapping her arms around me. I swore I could feel it, and even if she wasn't real, I could just tell myself it was.
"But one last thing." She said, pulling away.
"God, you always have to get the last word in." I giggled through my tears.
"If I had to do it again, I would."
I blinked in confusion, and she was gone.
I managed to fall asleep, and when I did, I dreamt of Mari. We were playing soccer. Just me and her, the rest of the field empty. We didn't say anything, just laughed. As I started to wake up, Mari looked at me and said something that she had said when I hallucinated her.
"If I had to do it again, I would."
--------------------------------------------------------
No one asked for this part 2 lol, also I feel weird labeling this as a Van x reader bc it doesn't rlly have much to do with Van it's more of a platonic Mari x reader. But lol who cares.

you ever wonder what it would be like being mari's favorite hookup because i've had the concept floating around my brain for a hot minute
( mdni , nsfw content ) ( btw i use the term 'boytoy' and i mean it in a gender neutral way - reader's gender isn't specified )
the first time she sets her sights on you is at a house party - maybe she just broke up with her boyfriend , or she's just looking for a good fuck ... either way she notices you hugging the walls and gripping your red solo cup as if someone was planning on taking it . the two of you start talking , and before you can process it your playful flirting morphs into mari dragging you into the nearest bathroom , slamming the door shut before crashing her lips into yours .
you leave that bathroom with a few new hickeys and an aching forearm.
mari , on the other hand , leaves with a new boytoy .
you're like putty in her hands , by her side at her every command . you find yourself in all sorts of positions you wouldn't have been in otherwise if it weren't for her . she's got you gasping for air in between her thighs in what was meant to be a study session , fingering her in the locker room post-practice after everyone has already left , and marking up her tits in your shitty car parked in a lot just dim enough that you couldn't be seen but not dim enough that any passerbys would miss the way the car is visibly rocking .
and of course this behavior doesn't stop in the wilderness - if anything it only gets worse . she's got you drooling over her doomcoming dress , too high to care that everyone can see the way she shoves you into the dirt and slots your thigh between hers , grinding herself into an orgasm long after the group has run off to the cabin .
no matter how important the task , mari has you dropping everything and biting your fingernails off with even the smallest glace and gesture for you to run off into the trees with her .

purple tongues ★ mari ibarra x fem!reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
some couples measure their love in pictures, or flowers, or kisses.  you and mari measure yours in slurpees.
word count: 2700 warnings: maybe mari a little ooc?
a/n: this is barely edited so it's a little rough around the edges
also this is supposed to be the first part of that big mari fic i was teasing here. i started writing a part 2 with more snapshots of mari and reader's relationship in the future but it might never get done who knows.
missing my shayla sm 💔💔
it started the night before everything began.  the night before you left for nationals.
you and mari had ditched the bonfire party early on, mari claiming "this looks like a scene out of can't hardly wait, minus anyone fuckable."  instead, the two of you walked down the lonely, dark neighborhood roads, music fading out of earshot and hands brushing with each step.
mari filled the silence by making fun of everyone's outfits that night just to hear you laugh.  you filled the space by leaning into her side and finally grabbing her hand, which left mari's heart thumping against her rib cage.  until you both stumbled across wiskayok's only 7/11.
sure it was cramped and old and smelled like weed, but the way mari opened the door for you and drawled "after you, milady," made it seem like the fanciest place in town.  you laughed all the way to the slurpee machine, mari guiding you with a hand on the small of your back, where you both reached for big gulp cups.
"half cherry, half coke," you say, filling your cup to the brim.  "just like god intended."
mari scrunches up her nose in disgust, but it's more cute than anything.
"no, no, no.  see, you gotta get blue raspberry like a real adult," mari says as if she's enlightening you.
"yeah, right."  you roll your eyes, but your smile speaks volumes.
she grabs a few crumpled dollar bills from the back pocket of her jeans and throws them down on the counter like it's not even a question that she's paying for you.  then she tugs you by the hand out the door and finds a nice spot on the curb illuminated by the overhead streetlight.
she outstretches her legs and lazily leans back on one hand, the other bringing the straw to her lips.  she moans dramatically after taking her first sip.
"enjoying that?" you ask, glancing over at her with a raised eyebrow.
"oh yeah," she says, grinning back.  "a thousand calories and enough artificial sweetener to kill a horse.  nationals here we come!"
you laugh, the sound mari's come to love so much, before taking a sip of your own.
there's a beat of silence.  it's something mari used to hate, but has come to understand since meeting you.  she actually finds herself enjoying the quiet when it's shared with you.  still she's always one to break it.
"isn't this so much better than getting puked on by randy walsh?"
you look over at her and grin.  because yeah, that had actually happened last year and she would spend the rest of her years teasing you about it.  but you also smiled because there was no one else you'd rather be with.
"yeah, it really is," you say, breathlessly and genuinely.
when mari turns and sees the way you're looking at her, full of love and everything she doesn't think she deserves, she feels like her heart might as well jump out of her chest and into your hands. because mari, whose first language is sarcasm and shit talking, somehow harbors a soft spot in the shape of you.
"don't look at me like that," she says, but her words lack the bite they usually have.  her eyes flicker down to the asphalt, a similar smile spreading across her face.
you lean in closer, lowering your face so she's forced to meet your eyes.  mari's the opposite of shy, so you can't help but take advantage of moments like this, when she's nervous to show how much she really cares.
"like what?" you ask, a teasing edge to your voice. like you already know what she's going to say.
"like you love me or something," she says, trying and failing to sound casual.  she looks back up at you, leaning back on her hand with that easy smirk.
"but i do," you say, resting your cheek against your knee, still smiling up at her.
"obviously, you dork."
a breathy chuckle pushes past your lips before you cup her face in your free hand.  your lips meet hers halfway in a strong, sure kiss.  it's not perfect by normal standards --both of your lips are freezing and taste like artificial sweetener and you can hear boys shouting on the other side of the parking lot.  but in that moment, it feels perfect to the both of you.
when mari pulls back she grins like she's just won the lottery.
"i love you too," she says, the words rolling off her tongue more naturally than her own name.
you smile, reaching down and interlacing your fingers with hers on the pavement.  you don't have the guts to say it, but a part of you is thinking it: maybe this could be forever.
if you had known that was going to be your last taste of normal, you would have stayed there even longer, would've bought mari another slurpee, would've kissed her one more time under the neon sign of the store.  instead, you walked her home an hour or two later, kissing her cheek at the door and whispering how beautiful of a night it had been with her.
the next time you think about slurpees, you're a thousand miles deep in the canadian wilderness.  you're starving, borderline freezing to death, and you've just watched your closest friends die.
you're tucked under as many blankets as you could find, legs tangled with mari's beneath them as you try to keep out the cold of the approaching winter.  your faces are so close that you can feel her warm breath fanning against your nose, a welcome reminder that she's still there.  she can feel your hand trembling as it holds onto her arm and the way you stiffen each time a strong gust of wind enters the hut, as if you're waiting for something bad to happen.
you think she might be asleep until you feel her fingers start to trace your cheekbone.  her touch is so gentle you have to question if it's really there or if you're just imagining it.
"do you remember our last night?" she whispers.
you open your eyes, and from the way the moonlight reflects off of them, mari knows you do.
"i think about it all the time," she confesses.  "when i can't sleep, i just try to remember you that night.  how pretty you looked under the streetlight and how stupid i was for not telling you then."
your lips curl into a weak, sad smile.
"and how you threw your head back and laughed at everything i said, even when it wasn't funny.  and-and how everything felt perfect when you held my hand."
"mari..." you whisper, leaning forward so your forehead rests against hers.
"and how happy you were to just be there with me.  i'm scared i'll never see you like that again."
you squeeze your eyes shut, feeling the tears start to swell.  you haven't cried in a while, but as every sight, sound, and taste from that night comes rushing back to you, you suddenly realize how much you've lost.
"i'm scared too, mar," you say, hand moving from her arm to her cheek.  "and i don't know what to say to make it better."
mari exhales, shaky and slow, like she's trying to keep it together for you.
"you don't have to say anything.  it's just...my favorite memory.  you're my favorite memory.  even if you do get that disgusting cherry coke mix that tastes like battery acid."
"shut up," you laugh quietly, pushing her shoulder.  it's a small, broken laugh that catches on the edge of a sob.  "it's so good and you know it."
"yeah, whatever," she says, smiling wider than you've seen in a while.
"i think i'd cut off my left arm just to have another one of those," you sigh.
"what?  slurpee?"
"yeah, that.  but also just...another night with you."  your hand's cradling her neck now, holding her like she's the only thing you've got left.
"tell you what," she starts, voice nearly breaking.  her fingers brush your hair out of your face.  "first thing i do if we get rescued, i'm taking you back to that place.  i'm getting you your battery acid slurpee.  we'll sit on the curb and you'll hold my hand and i'll kiss you so hard our tongues turn purple.  we'll rewrite the memory.  i promise."
a loose tear trickles down your cheek as you nod your head.
"deal," you whisper.  then mari leans forward and kisses the tear away.
"i love you."
"i love you more," you say, wrapping your arm around her as she buries her face in your neck.
you close your eyes and you see that image of mari: laughing, carefree, straw between her lips.  and for the first time, you let yourself imagine what it will be like after you're rescued, when you get to see that version of mari again.  and it's the first time you have a semblance of good night's sleep since the plane crash.
and then it finally happens.  rescue comes even though a part of you had given up on it entirely.  and mari's there, holding your hand through it all.  from the hospital, to the anxious plane ride home, to seeing wiskayok for the first time in almost two years.
and then, just like she promised, you're sitting the passenger seat of mari's car as she drives you back to that 7/11.  it's a quiet drive, one where you're staring out the window and taking in the sights and sounds of the town that hasn't changed a bit since you last saw it.  and mari's fingers are tapping anxiously against the steering wheel while her other hand rests in yours over the center console like a lifeline, grounding you when everything feels like too much.
when she finally pulls into the parking lot and puts the car in park, you both just sit there.  it looks exactly the same way it did on that night: neon sign outside, too-bright fluorescent lights inside, and the kids with their bikes loitering around the entrance.  it was as if time had frozen that night, and the store had been awaiting your return all these months later.
mari exhales a heavy breath from beside you.
"you good?" you murmur, eyes never leaving the store.  this feels like a dream.  one you thought you'd never get to fulfill.
"yeah, it's just...a lot," mari says.
it shouldn't be a lot.  it should just be a random 7/11 in some random boring town.  but to you and mari, it's everything.
"i know," you say, squeezing her hand.  "we don't have to if-"
"no, i want to.  i've been waiting to.  it's all i've been thinking about for two years and now it's here."  she looks over at you and smiles.  "come on, let's go."
she gets to the door first and holds it open for you.
"after you, milady," she says, just like last time, except her voice is softer and more careful now.  it's a small but sharp reminder that you'll never get back the innocence you once had.
you don't throw your head back in laughter this time, you just smile, hand still in hers, tugging her inside after you.  the smell of weed hits you like a freight train, but for once, you don't mind.  you lead mari to the slurpee machine that's still in the same spot and you sigh when you see the flavors are exactly the same: cherry, blue raspberry, coke, and that weird sugar free green one that nobody gets.
"god, mar, i might cry," you say.  you expect her to tease you like usual, something about how much of a sap you are, but instead she releases your hand and holds your waist instead.
"me too," she says, resting her chin on your shoulder.  you spare her a smile over your shoulder before reaching for two of the largest cups.
"coke and cherry?" she asks.
"just like god intended," you say, pulling on the cherry lever.  mari watches you, no longer bothering to hide the fondness in her eyes.
she eventually heads for blue raspberry, telling you, "somethings never change."
"and i never want them to," you say.
"me neither," she says, looping an arm through yours and guiding you toward the unbothered cashier.
mari tries to pay but you're quicker this time.
"nope, i've had this debt for two years.  time to repay it," you say, sliding a couple crumpled bills of your own onto the counter.  you had been sure to grab them before you left the house just for this very occasion, so that, for once, you could be the one to take care of mari.
"it's two dollars, you idiot," mari teases before dragging you outside to the same spot on the curb under the same flickering streetlight.
the two of you wordlessly sit, knees brushing.  for once, the night air is warm and the sounds of wiskayok hum in the background and there's no weight on either of your shoulders, no fear.
"we're really here," mari says, leaning back on her hand like muscle memory.
"just like you promised."
"i didn't even know if we were going to make it out when i told you that," mari admits.
"i know," you say, elbows resting on your knees.  "but that didn't matter.  just thinking about it made everything a little less bad.  and now, being here, with you, it's better than i could've ever imagined."
she recognizes the way you're looking at her, like she hung the stars in your sky.  it's the same look you gave her that night, the one that made her heart jump and scared her a little.  except now she doesn't shy away. she melts right into it.
she lifts her cup in the air like it's something sacred.
"to making new memories," she says.
you tap the rim of your cup against hers, making a plastic clinking sound.
"to us," you add.
because that's what it's been all along, the two of you. and after everything, you know that's how it's going to stay: the two of you tethered, two halves of a whole.
you hold eye contact as you both take your first sips, until the slush hits her tongue and mari's eyes roll back in her head.
"oh my god, that's the best thing i've ever tasted," mari groans, dramatically throwing her head back in true mari fashion.
you can't even respond, you're chugging it so fast.  but then reality hits
"fuck!" you curse, squeezing your eyes shut and pressing your palm against your forehead.
mari turns to you, smirking as if watching you suffer is her favorite comedy.
"brain freeze?"
"yep," you wince.  "battery acid's never tasted so good."
mari laughs, setting her cup down on the pavement.  then she turns her body fully toward yours, like she's about to say something immensely serious.  but there's still that mischievous glint in her eye that tells you she's got something up her sleeve.
"now, time to fulfill the prophecy."
you blink at her and the sudden tone shift.
"what?" you ask, giving her a concerned look.  "are you going all lottie on me?"
"no, dummy, purple tongues," she says like it's the most obvious thing ever.  "i gotta keep my promise, don't i?"
a breathless, free laugh escapes your lips.  it's been so long since mari's heard it, she thinks she might cry.
"you're so stupid," you say, though you're already leaning in.
she grabs your face with both hands, still cold from holding the cup, and pulls you into a kiss.  it's not stolen like it was before.  now it's slow and timeless, but still certain.  she kisses you like she wants to steal back every moment she thought she'd never get with you.  and you're more than willing to let her.
"love you," you whisper against her lips, her hands holding you firmly and not letting you escape her.
"love you too," she whispers back before kissing you so hard you get dizzy.
and that's how your favorite tradition is formed: you, mari, slurpees, and a whole lot of love.

jealous!mari headcanons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
mari ibarra x fem!reader
warnings: nsfw towards the end, majority is fluff, established relationship (mostly)
sfw
mari really wanted to be on the same team as you for capture the bone but nat wanted all the couples on different teams
was smug as hellll when she helped her team win by being the decoy, but you couldn’t stop teasing her about how annoyed and mopey she would’ve been if she’d lost
she denies that that would’ve happened, saying she’s not competitive, but you both know that’s not true
says random things to make you blush, loves whispering in your ear
“you know, it would’ve been so much better if you were the one on top of me during the game”
“don’t you wanna help me celebrate? it’s a bit rude not to congratulate the winner…”
i like to imagine that when she made the remark about cabin guy to lottie it was to impress akilah because mari was so loser lesbian with it & i feel like she’d be like that around you before you started dating 😭 like girl be calm
SET on sleeping in the same hut together, regardless of its size. usually you sleep in hers but if you ever end up going back to yours at the end of the night, she’ll eventually crawl in to join you with a cute frown on her face
“you don’t wanna sleep with me?” (you always want to)
“can i… sleep here then?” (of course she can)
she also “accidentally” puts extra hoodies and blankets on your side of the makeshift bed so you can sleep better 🤲
sometimes her jealousy shows more as being upset, but she’ll always try to mask it with her witty remarks
but deep inside she’s just a big softie who doesn’t understand why you don’t want to be with her 24 hours a day 😔😔😔 (you do, it’s just not realistically possible)
she’s a BIGGG pouter when she’s upset. you tease her? she pouts. you go a few hours without seeing her during the day? she’s pouting the second you get back
mari’s jealousy comes out more when shauna is around you, especially because it seems to her that shauna continues to spend time with you solely to piss her off
one time you were assigned to help shauna prepare dinner and mari nearly turned red in the face watching the smirk grow on shauna’s face
nsfw
to me mari is a switch so the way she reacts to jealousy intimacy-wise would depend on the situation
if it was because of shauna or another perceived wrong, she’s much more dominant and controlling
if it was because you weren’t spending enough time with her lately or something smaller like that, she’d be more soft and just want you to “prove” to her that she’s the only one for you (ofc she already knows that)
she prefers for you to go down on her in those softer moments, but when her jealousy is gearing towards anger, she likes taking you with her fingers
she’s much more secure in the relationship than it may seem; regardless of her “anger” when it comes to moments of jealousy, she knows you wouldn’t ever cheat or do anything to hurt her
she could never tell you that, of course. she’s a badass!! a nonchalant, very confident badass who definitely doesn’t think about you every second of the day
ik this is supposed to be a nsfw section but for some reason i don’t feel like mari would be the type to start hooking up during a moment of jealousy ykwim 🤨 i feel like she’s more the type to storm off and sulk until you notice
DOES jump your bones once she’s over it tho. like you do still have “jealous” sex but usually by that point you’ve worked it out
she’s still possessive at heart though so she will be leaving marks all over for shauna to see
and you don’t even care :)

Picking Sides | Mari Ibarra x Fem! Reader
warning: one-shot with smut, situationship, jealousy, jealous sex, possessiveness, possessive sex, both of your first times, fingering
summary: mari and shauna won't stop fighting and you keep having to break it up. mari's pissed that you don't defend her, she's pissed because she feels like shauna's caught your eye. maybe it's time to talk about the feelings you guys refuse to ever address.
this is my favorite thing that I've written on here!! wooo :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I fucking hate her." Mari grumbles. Shauna had tackled Mari and bit her during our 'capture the flag' game; so here I was, kneeled in front of Mari, cleaning her wounds.
"It's just a game." I hum in response, dabbing the blood from Mari's leg.
Mari huffs, "You always take her side! She fucking bit me!"
"I don't always take her side. I can tell she's going through a lot, ever since Jackie died---"
Mari cut me off by shoving me away from her, "Fuck off, (Y/n)! I don't need you to help me. I don't need to hear you excuse her! You're supposed to be my friend, not kissing up to that psycho."
"Mari, I-I'm sorry. I'm trying to not make things worse out here."
"Then, take my side! Oh, my god, (Y/n), fuck the peace!" Before I could respond to her outburst, Mari had already stomped off to her tent. Things have been tense between her and I since then. I wish she could understand where I was coming from. I wish she could understand that I'm trying to protect her. Shauna has gotten worse and worse lately and I understand why, but Mari being the target of it all worries me.
Mari ignored me for the rest of the day, mostly staying in her hut until it was time for our winner's dinner.
I sat next to Mari at the table and she scoffed. Shauna came over to us with Mari's soup in her hand. Mari shot her a sly smirk, "It feels good to be a winner." She gloated and Shauna smirked back at Mari, leaning over the bowl in her hands and spitting in it. Mari's eyes went wide, "Did you just spit in my fucking soup?" She growls, standing up so she's face to face with Shauna. I get up too, already getting in the middle of them. Shauna throws the soup to the ground, her hands reaching for Mari. I put a hand on both of their chests and push them away from each other (stop the fighting!), "She spit in my fucking soup, (Y/n), move!" Mari shouted, her hands reaching to try and hit Shauna.
Natalie and Taissa stood up, rushing to help me break Mari and Shauna apart. Shauna was held back by Natalie and Taissa as Mari walked back to her hut, a string of curse words left in her path. I followed and went into her hut with her, "What the fuck do you want, (Y/n)?" Mari spat.
"I wanted to make sure you're okay--"
"If you actually gave a fuck about me, (Y/n), then you would've done something."
"I did do something, I stopped Shauna from killing your ass!"
"You know that's not what I meant. You should've fucking hit her or at least let me hit her!" Mari yells before sighing, "You...it's like you're taking her side all over again. Before the crash, I remember when that girl shoved me to the ground during a game and you threatened to punch her. I knew you were never going to actually hit her, but you still stood up for me instead of standing between me and her and telling us to stop like you’re doing now."
"That was back then, things are different now, Mari."
"When the plane crashed, I was the first person you looked for. When Coach Ben set the cabin on fire, you made sure I made it out okay. When Lottie was doing her stupid rituals and I was being an idiot and following them, you went with me to make sure I wouldn't get hurt. When I got into that dumb fight with Melissa, you shoved her and told her to fuck off. You were always on my side and now it's like...it's like Shauna's bullshit has seeped into your brain and turned you against me!"
"Mari..."
"No! You don't get to 'Mari' me. You don't get to act like things haven't changed! So, what is it? What is it about Shauna that makes you prefer her?" Mari began to tear up, turning away from me completely so I wouldn't see.
"Prefer her? What are you talking about?"
"You know exactly what I'm talking about!" Mari's voice cracked, it was unusual for her to be so unstoic, "Don't make me say it. You know that there's something between us, (Y/n), even if neither of us could ever admit it out loud."
"I don't--"
"Just stop! Don't make me feel crazy, you're the one thing in this place actually keeping me sane. Don't act like those stupid foraging trips we went on together every night alone meant nothing or when we slept next to each other every night in the cabin or when you got drunk at that party and almost kissed me!" Mari was basically shouting at this point, her back still turned to me.
I reached out and touched her shoulder, "Mari, I--"
She wouldn't let me get a word out. She turned around, continuing, "Tell me what it is about Shauna that makes me so easy to throw away!” If there was one thing about Mari that never changed after the crash, it was her stubbornness.
“Can you shut up and listen to me?!”
Mari crossed her arms over her chest, childishly tapping her foot, “What?” She demanded.
“I’m not throwing you away! I wasn’t lying when I said I was trying to keep the peace. I was scared of you getting hurt, Mari. I know you act like you can handle whatever Shauna throws at you, but I know you better than that and I know her better than that. You saw what happened to Javi, I am terrified that you’re going to end up…” I didn’t finish my sentence, Mari knew I was right, even if she was too stubborn to admit it. The air was thick and all we could do was stare at each other.
Mari broke the silence between us, “There’s one thing you forgot to mention…” Mari looked down at her feet, clearly embarrassed, “Us.” Mari and I talked about everything together. We talked about the night on shrooms, we talked about the plane crash, we talked about every feeling or secret we had, but we never talked about us. At least, not until Mari had mentioned it, “I always felt like you protected me because you cared about me, but also because you…liked me.” Mari shook her head, as if to rid herself of her own immature thoughts, “So, to see you protect Shauna, I feel like there has to be something there.” I could tell Mari was getting worked up again, she had an obvious tell; her eyes would never leave yours, her brows would furrow ever so slightly, and SHE NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT IT, “Your little romance with Shauna is pissing me off and me being pissed off about it has nothing to do with how I feel about you, it’s just that it’s ruining my life!”
“You are so dramatic, Mari, you know I’m not into Shauna!”
Mari stepped forward, our faces almost touching, “Then, prove it.” She challenged.
I opened my mouth to question what exactly she meant and Mari had stopped me by doing the one thing neither of us had dared to do before.
She kissed me.
Her lips crashed into mine, not caring about knocking teeth or bumping noses. Her fingers dig into my jaw almost like she’s scared that this will end if her grip loosens even a little bit. The kiss isn’t gentle, it’s rough. It’s filled with years of desperation; of looking, but never touching. Of pretending like we’re just friends. Of everything we were scared of because we didn’t want to lose our friendship. Her mouth parts slightly and her tongue is pushing it’s way into my mouth. She presses our lips together harder, not wanting an inch of space between us. She bites my bottom lip — hard. She pulls away, pressing her forehead to mine as she takes a deep breath, “Take off your shirt.”
“W-What?”
“You heard me, take off your shirt.” Mari says, more firmly this time, “I’m going to make you forget all about that psycho.” I don’t try to disagree with Mari this time, I know she’s far too set in her ways to even listen to reason. Instead, I separate from her and lift my shirt over my head. I can feel the cold wind coming into the tent, I can feel the goosebumps forming along my skin. Mari’s lips ghost over my neck and in an instant, her teeth are sinking into my neck. One of her hands is firmly planted on my hip while the other is entangled in my hair, ensuring that I can’t possibly move away from her. Mari sucks the skin of my neck harshly, making sure that everyone would be able to see the hickeys tomorrow. She sucks until my skin aches, mumbling as she does so, “Everyone’s going to know. That bitch will know you’re mine.” To emphasize her words, Mari bites down even harder and I can’t help the moan that escapes my lips. I can feel Mari’s sly smirk on my skin as she kisses down to my chest, biting and sucking my collarbone. She licks her lips right before she leaves hickies along the edge of my bra, not letting any inch of skin of mine go unmarked. Mari pulls away, staring at her work and smiling like an idiot.
Mari’s eyes move back to mine, hers are so big and full of adoration that it makes my heart ache, “I like you!” Mari blurts out.
I blush and smile. My hand moves to her jaw, my thumb brushing over her bottom lip, “I know that, Mari.” I laugh.
“Well, I just…I think you should say it back…since you didn’t say it before.” Mari sheepishly mumbles. She is so cute, but so dumb.
“I like you too, Mari.” Mari exhales, her posture more relaxed now as if me letting her leave fifty million hickeys on me was not enough proof that I was into her.
“Now, time to get that bra off!” Mari not so smoothly says and I drop my hand from her face, shifting it to her shoulder so I can playfully shove her, “Hey! I’m serious.” She pouts. I hate that I find those big, brown eyes to be so irresistible especially since they are attached to the biggest idiot I know. I can’t help but listen to her, I reach my arms behind my back and begin to unclip my bra when Mari stops me, “W-Wait, I want to do it.” My arms drop to my sides and Mari’s hands quickly replace where mine had just fallen from. She unclasps my bra and takes it off, her mouth slightly agape as she takes in the sight in front of her. The sight of me, topless and covered in hickeys left by her.
Mari’s hands move to my chest; groping, squeezing, cupping any bit of it that she can. Her actions are rough and not at all smooth, but the look on her face is so loving that her rugged movements do nothing but turn me on even more. Mari’s fingers circle my nipples as her eyes watch me, studying every reaction. Her thumb and index finger close around my nipple as Mari watches for what actions makes me moan the loudest, “Fuck, you really sound like that? I must be good at this.” This cocky idiot. I can’t help but roll my eyes causing Mari to pinch once more, her smirk growing bigger as my moans get louder.
“Mari, I need you.”
“Y-You want to…go all the way?” Mari hesitantly asks, her eyes lighting up. I nod, too embarrassed to say any more and Mari’s hands drop from my chest, “You have to answer or I won’t know!”
Liar. She just wants to hear me say it, “I want to have sex with you, Mari.”
Mari grins, her entire face beaming, “Undress.” She says. I begin removing my shorts and panties as Mari removes the makeshift winner’s cape from her shoulders and sets it down on her bedding, attempting to provide some more cushion to it. Mari turns back to face me, her eyes raking over my body, “Fuck.” Her words are breathless, her hands reaching out to touch any part of me. Her hands land on my waist and she pulls me in, her lips finding mine in the first gentle action of the night. We kissed as we lowered onto Mari’s questionable sleeping arrangements.
Mari’s hands slide down my stomach, to my thighs, inching up to my center. Her fingers grazed over my folds and she broke the kiss to look at them. She held them up to her face and repeatedly separated her index and middle finger, watching the wetness collected on them string across, “That wet just from me kissing you?”
“You did a lot more than just kiss me!” I argue, my face heating up as Mari giggled.
Her fingers returned to my thighs and Mari’s breathing faltered, “I don’t…I don’t really know what I’m doing.” Mari nervously admits, embarrassed by her lack of knowledge.
I blush, stammering, “T-Try doing…what you do to yourself to me.” I suggest and Mari nods, determined.
Her fingers inch closer and closer and I can feel my body aching for her touch. Her other hand moves to my hip, helping to steady me. Her thumb ghosts over my clit and my thighs shake, “Did…Did that feel good?” Mari nervously asks.
“R-Really good.”
Mari smiles and her thumb grazes my clit with more confidence, her touch becoming firmer. Her index finger slips lower, her thumb still rubbing my clit, and she slides her finger inside me. I arch into her touch, “Is this okay?” I nod and Mari begins to move her finger. She’s gentle and slow, almost like speeding up would somehow break me. Mari’s lips drift to my neck again; however, this time, she isn’t biting down or sucking – she’s leaving soft kisses along the skin, trying her best to keep me relaxed as she adds a second finger.
“Mari!” The moan slips from my lips and Mari’s fingers instinctively curl inside me. I jerk against her hand, beginning to grind my hips in sync with her thrusts. Her movements became more and more confident, her fingers moving perfectly inside me – it was hard to believe it was her first time. Mari was more determined than she had ever been, the moans of her name spurring her on as she eagerly fucked me. The only sound echoing in this small tent is my moans and Mari’s wet fingers gliding in and out of me, “Mari, I’m close.” I moan, my hips jerking into her hand even more. I can’t help it, it feels like I need Mari’s fingers more than I’ve ever needed anything. I can feel the heat pooling in my stomach and it doesn’t take long before I’m tightening around Mari’s fingers. Her thrusts slow down, but her thumb keeps a consistent pace on my clit.
“You look so pretty, (Y/n).” Mari breathes out as she watches me unfold under her. I moan nothing but her name as I come on her fingers. Mari’s movements slow down, helping me ride out my orgasm. Once I finish, Mari slowly takes her fingers out and smiles at me, “You are so hot.” I blush, too out of breath to respond.
Mari lays down next to me, her arms wrapping around me and pulling my back flush against her, “That was amazing. You’re amazing.” Mari says, kissing my shoulder, “This is where you tell me I’m amazing too.”
I laugh, as does Mari, “You were amazing too, Mari.” I reply, breathless.
We sat in comfortable silence for a few moments; both recovering from everything that had taken place today, not only in the last two hours, but this whole day. That was until Mari broke the silence, "We make a way better couple than that psycho and her dumb hat-wearing girlfriend." Mari mumbles, placing another kiss on my shoulder, “We’re basically the it couple of the huts.”
“You did not seriously just say that.”
“You can’t cringe at the words that leave my mouth now when this mouth was just all over you.” Mari happily responds.
I roll my eyes, “And since when did we become a couple? I don’t recall you asking me to be your girlfriend.”
Mari’s eyes widen and her jaw drops, it’s the most shocked I’ve ever seen her look, “You’re really still into Shauna after all of that?! I put my best work into you! Even when my hand started cramping, I didn’t make a single noise!”
“I am banning you from ever mentioning Shauna again, you idiot.” I turn to face Mari, pecking her lips before continuing, “I am only into you, Mari.”
I can feel Mari relaxing in my arms, “Promise?”
Mari lifts up her pinky finger and I interlock it with mine, “I promise.”
“Does this mean we’re dating?”
“Yes, idi–”
“Stop calling me that! If anything, I’m way smarter than you.”
I smirk, knowing what I was about to say would win this faux argument, “Melissa said you chipped your tooth on your vibrator.”
Mari gasped, “No way my girlfriend is engaging with gossip about me!”
“Girlfriend?”
Mari playfully hit me, “Deny it one more time and I’m spitting in your soup.”
“Fine, I’m Mari Ibarra’s girlfriend.” Mari happily sighs, her arms wrapping around me once more. She felt more relaxed than she ever had, as though that label had managed to fill every single need she ever had.

Mari Ibarra x Reader (some brief Nat x reader)
Summary: Mari hates how close you’ve gotten to Natalie.
A/N: This is just a lil one shot for my girl Mari. 😔 love you forever angel💔
It was fucking cold. Your hands were buried in the pockets of your jean jacket. And it wasn’t doing anything for you. You groaned, you were from Florida…Hollywood, Florida.
You used to joke about not being built for the winter. Like the cold. But when you were thrust into Wiskayok, New Jersey, it was something that became a fact. And the butt end of a running joke amongst your friends.
You would rather die than endure the cold.
And this is how you knew God was a comedian. Because. What. The Hell. A plane crash? A plane crash WHERE? Where the hell were you? The woods of fucking Antartica? You started calling this shithole Narnia. The way it felt like the white fucking witch turned the place into an ice palace.
More than that. You didn’t even like soccer. Never had. You just joined the damn team because of Mari. She was your closest friend at Wiskayok. You transferred there at the end of Sophomore year. Your dad got a promotion, had to move. You did this every three years, so it wasn’t necessarily new.
The idea of packing up and leaving. Never placing roots. But you started memorizing the places you lived. It made you feel like a local quicker, easier to adapt. If you start to get good with directions, you’ll pretend you’ve been there longer than you have. It makes being there bearable, makes leaving more memorable.
You had it down to a science. You didn’t make too many friends, one or two. Easier to say goodbye to when there's not a lot. Maybe a fling here or there, no big loves. That would fuck you up. And you needed easy.
It all needed to be easy to navigate. When you told Mari this drunk at a party in the corner of some guy’s kitchen. She gave you this look. Like you were just speaking in a different language. And as quickly as you finished, she scoffed big and loud.
“You are fucking crazy, that’s like…I don’t know…sad as shit?” She says, taking a sip. “I was on board with all of that until the no big loves part. Love is like the whole point.”
You roll your eyes, “Love is the whole point?” You repeat teasing, “What are you, Celine Dion?”
“Shut up! You know what I mean. You just said the most miserable nonsense. Like what happens if you fall in love with someone? What then?”
“I don’t fall in love with people.”
“Bullshit.”
“What?”
“That’s bullshit. Everyone has fallen in love.”
“Not me.”
Mari leaned in closer to your face. Eyes are intense and searching. You feel heat rush to your face. You shift away, but she mirrors it by moving closer until she is a breath away from you. Eyes scanning your face like she was trying to find something.
“Mari?”
Her eyes flit to your lips, and you are starting to wonder if the alcohol from the night is beginning to kick in. She licks her lips, and for a split second, you’re wondering…what would it be like to kiss her. Are her lips soft? They look soft. Would she enjoy it…if we kissed? Has…has Mari always been this pretty? Your eyes are now locked on her lips, and Mari notices and breaks out into a wide smile.
“Buuuullshiiiiiit.” She slurs, before leaning in to kiss you. She misses your lips and lands on the corner of your mouth.
A testament to how drunk she is. And with the way your heart is racing out of your chest at the small action, maybe you are too. You pull away, chuckling, your hands on both sides of her face. Giving her a chance to back out. Or come to her sense.
Instead, she is pouting, “Wait one….second. Don’t move.”
She tries again, this time kissing you firmly on your lips. With intention. Her hands are on your shoulders to help steady her. She tastes of cheap beer and smoke. And from the way she bites your lip and pulls you close, you know she won’t remember this. She’s kissing you too passionately, too intensely, too sloppily, for it to be conscious.
But you know you will remember. Fuck. The way your stomach is knotted inside you, the way you can still smell the faintest whiff of her cherry bomb perfume. The way she is kissing you like you’re going to die tomorrow.
You kissed her back, hard and with hunger. Letting yourself get lost in someone you considered safe-ish. Safe enough to befriend and share your thoughts unfiltered. Someone who knew you relatively the best in this small town.
Yeah, you remembered that kiss.
Mari did not.
Which was okay. Because, quite frankly…you didn't know what to do with a kiss like that. A kiss that you kept thinking about way too often. A kiss that would often make your eyes unconsciously flicker to her lips when she was ranting about something stupid. A kiss that made you unfortunately puddy in her hands to all her damn whims.
Including trying out for that fucking soccer team.
You stood in the cold, watching all those damn assholes you called your teammates do their chores. Or try to get warm, or do whatever you do in this hell hole.
Irony was you called Wiskayok a hell hole. Like often. Your mom would give you a pointed look whenever you said hell because of it. Now it was like fucking paradise in your mind.
Your hands shoved into your jacket, eyes flickering to the sky. The snow floated down like it was magic. And when you were little, you used to think it was.
Now it felt like a curse.
Winter was like the impending death count starting its drumroll. Who will kick the can first? It was a sick joke. But these fucking girls were insane. You felt fucking insane. You hated it. The only semblance of normalcy was-
“Sup dickwad.” Mari greeted you with a wide grin.
Mari.
In a sea of tension, weird cult behavior, and bipolar mood swings, Mari’s sense of self being in tact has been your sanity. Because thank god she hasn’t fucking changed. She has stayed her annoying, goofy, beautiful, and quietly kind self. And you were so thankful she was here.
“Hey,” You greeted with a sigh.
Mari notices your hands in your pockets, and gives you a concerned look. “Cold?”
You scoff, “What gave it away?”
She rolls her eyes, and motions for you to give her your hands. “Yeah don’t be an ass about it.”
You wordlessly show her your trembling blue hands. She frowns and rubs her hands together quickly, before holding onto yours. Her hands aren’t nearly warm enough against your freezing ones. Despite that, it sends heat rushing throughout your body, and a lingering fluttery feeling in your chest. You gasp, and Mari just gives you a grin.
“See, just have to speak up about what you need.” She mumbles to you, her hands tightly holding onto yours.
You smile, “Yeah…my bad.”
After a beat, she lets go of your hands. “Heard you’re next on hunting rotation.”
You shrug, “Yeah, we’ll head out in a few. Waiting for the snow to lighten up.”
Mari doesn’t say anything for a beat too long but her eyes shift from you to something behind you. You frown and wave your hand around her face. “Dude, are you good? What are you even thinking about?” You ask, trying to follow her eyesight to see what’s bothering her.
“Yeah so I heard Nat likes you.” Mari blurted out.
You freeze, “What?”
You spin from behind you, where the girls are all scattered around the campsite. Your eyes scour to find Natalie. Once they find her, she’s sitting near her tent, cleaning out the gun. Blonde hair was beginning to outgrow into her dark roots. Dark eyes focused and hung low. Lip tucked under her teeth in concentration.
“That doesn’t mean go fucking look at her! You’re so fucking obvious!!” Mari hisses, twisting you back around to face her again.
You give her a wide-eyed look, “Well-okay you can’t blame me for that. You can’t tell me someone has a crush on me and expect me not to want to see-”
“Do you like her?”
The question throws you for a loop. You pause, face scrunching in confusion. “Huh?”
“Well? Do you?”
“…Where is this coming from?” You ask carefully, not understanding. You narrow your eyes, trying to read her face.
Mari swallows hard before shrugging casually. “I’m just curious.”
You can tell she is trying to be casual, but her tone comes out harsh. Harsh enough to make you flinch. “Why are you saying it like that?” You question hesitantly.
“Like what?”
“Like you’re mad about it.”
“I’m not mad.”
You stare at her. Eyebrows raised, lips parted, and hands crossed across your chest. This felt like having a conversation with a two-year-old. You nod and give her an unconvinced look. “No, but you are. You’re doing that thing you do when you’re mad.”
“Just answer the fucking question.” Mari’s voice rises.
“Oh my God-you are mad.” You whispered, a pit of fear beginning to set in your stomach.
“No I’m not!” She denied, her face hot.
You lift your hands up in surrender. ”Okay! Not mad, got it. Why is it important if I like Nat or not?” You questioned softly.
“It doesn’t matter-I just-well do you?”
“I mean…I don’t know I never thought about it. I mean, she is…like hot. In an alt bad girl kind of way.” You turn your back to look at Natalie again, but Mari is stopping you and twisting you back to face her.
“You think she’s hot? She is sooo not hot. If anything she’s like an alt loser.” She objects, with a something in her tone that is trying too hard.
You scoff, “Mari…don’t fucking start. Yes she is hot.”
“No she isn’t. She isn’t a real bad girl. So what she wears leather no big deal-”
“Mari-”
“And big whoop she smokes? Literally we all do-”
You grab Mari’s shoulders effectively stopping her ramble. “Mari…are you jealous?”
Mari frowns, “N-no.”
You grin “Holy shit. You SO are!”
Mari rolls her eyes, and starts to walk away but you grab her hand and pull her into you. “Aww Mari, nooo come back. Come on, you’re beautiful too.”
“Beautiful? You just called Natalie hot. And I get beautiful?”
You look around, not a lot of the girls were around. But still you started tugging Mari away from everyone a little deeper into the woods. Mari frowns trying not very hard to untangle her hand from yours.
“Where are you taking me you freak??” Mari groans.
You roll your eyes. “Oh chill the fuck out Mari. I’m not Lottie, I’m not going to bring you to some weird ass ritual site to pray.”
That shuts her up. Because she did go to one of those. And when she told you, well you were fucking pissed. You argued about how dangerous it could’ve been or how in the grand scheme of it all fucking insane that is???? Mari had never seen your face get so red.
She kinda liked how protective you were of her.
It made you kinda…hot? It made her want to do more, see how far you’d be willing to go. What you’d do if she forced your hand to intervene. Would you protect her? Would you want her?
So Mari had locked into the sub cult happening amongst the girls. Half because what if that shit is real, other half because she wanted to see what you would do. Wanted to see if you would care.
You brought her not too far from camp, but far enough where no one will be able to hear. You let go of her hand and take a step back, arms on your hips. Mari already missed the warmth your hand on hers gave.
“Alright Mari, why the fuck are you jealous of Nat? Is it because we’re spending a lot of time together?” You ask, with a surprising amount of softness.
Mari flinches, she didn’t expect to be confronted with the truth. Of course she was bothered. In a strange turn of events, her getting closer to Lottie, pushed you to get closer to Nat. You being one of the hunters was badass (and kinda hot).
But then you started talking to Mari less and Nat more. When you were all together you would whisper inside jokes to the blonde, and your eyes would light up when she chuckled. Hell when they hunted Nat, you were the one that held back Tai, shoved Gen to the ground, and yelled to Nat to fucking run.
It was Mari that had to wash your face, Tai had knocked you out with her elbows. When Mari begged you to talk to her. Explain why you would be so reckless and stupid. You wouldnt. You didn’t even look her in the eyes.
Just mumbled “She’s our friend…we can’t just…she deserves to go back home with us.”
Natalie was softer with you after that. Mari noticed it. How could she not? Especially when Natalie would fucking run the pads of her fingers to the bruising and cut on your face. (The face Mari cleaned and patched up)
Or the way you let Natalie rest her head on your shoulder. Or how your hand found hers, when you felt anxious. How Natalie would whisper stuff in your ear to make you laugh.
And even when they made Natalie leader. You were the one that kissed her on the cheek and said you’d follow her anywhere. The memory left a bitter taste in Mari’s mouth. It made her want to punch something-
“Mari?” You call out again.
Mari eyes snap open, she is looking at you and the concern on your face. A frown deepening on her own lips. “I’m not jealous.” She lies.
You groan, “Okay fine. Not jealous. Why are you upset then?” You question, and when Mari opens her mouth to object you stop her, “AND don’t fucking stand there and say ‘I’m not upset.’ Yes you fucking are. Your left eye is twitching and you got the frown on your face. The one you had when you found out your older brother stole your Selena CD to give to his girlfriend for Valentine’s day.”
Despite her frustration and annoyance, Mari chuckled at the memory. The memory you know. She can’t help the frown that slips, because you really know her best.
And then she shook her head and sighed. Not knowing how to explain herself. So she shrugged, “I don’t like Natalie. Never have.”
Another lie.
“Okay…I don’t really like your friendship with Lottie-but I understand we have friends outside of each other-“
“-Yeah that’s the thing. I don’t like that. I don’t like that you have someone besides me.” Mari cuts to it. Her voice rising.
“You-you don’t like me having friends?” You repeat slowly and bit in disbelief.
“No I don’t.” Mari deadpans, and then after a beat. “I should be your person. I’ve always been your person since you fucking got to that shitty little town. Sure you had other rando friends. But it was me and you for the most part. So yeah fuck Natalie. So what she’s the leader? And you go hunting with her and you have this special little bond- well fuck that. We have a special little bond. And I’m hot too and also-“
In a last ditch effort to stop this rant you step closer to her and reach your hands out to gently grab her face. Thumbs caressing the apples of her cheeks. Hot to the touch. Which shuts her up quickly. Eyes wide, face flushed, mouth open.
You chuckle a little at the sight of her. “Feel free to stop this if you hate it.” You mumbled, before leaning closer and pressing your lips firmly on hers.
Her lips are chapped and cold. And she’s frozen in place, hands to her sides. Your heart drops because fuck what if this wasn’t what you should’ve done.
But then when you pull away she closes the gap and kisses you back hard. Her hands grabbing your jacket and fisting it to tug you even closer. You moan in surprise and that makes her smile into your lips. It’s all consuming and you feel Mari start to lead as she walks you backwards until you’re against a fucking tree.
Your eyes widen. “Not jealous, huh? That’s such bullshit” You tease, pulling away from her lips.
Mari frowns, “Shut up.” slamming her lips back against yours. She bites your bottom lip and uses your tiny gasp as the means to slide her tongue into your mouth. She fights for dominance and you let her have it.
One thing you’ve learned being her friend is to never fight an angry Latina. You never win, even if you’re right, even if you technically could win. You never win. So you let her take over, you let her kiss along your neck. You let her bite and suck, and mark you up.
Mari could always do what she wanted with you.
And when she pulls away, she has this satisfied look on her face. Your eyes are dilated, your hair tussled, lips red and swollen. Your neck? Screams someone marked me. I belong to someone. And you did.
“This means you’re mine. I’m yours, you’re mine. No one else gets to do this. Okay?” Mari says firmly with all the seriousness in the world.
You swallow hard and nod. “Wait are you saying we’re…like dating?”
Mari frowns “Well duh. Damn and you say I’m slow.”
You roll your eyes, “Okay rude, also I didn’t even know you liked girls.”
“Yeah? Well…I like you. I have for like a really long time-and I’m not going to lose you because the leather loser that you think is hot sweeps you away or worse-“
You kiss the corner of her mouth tenderly. To stop her angry rambling. Which it does, very quickly. “Yeah yeah.” you mumble.
You keep kissing all around her face and you can feel her melt under you. Her hand holding your waist tighter.
“You can’t just kiss me every time you want me to shut up.” She says with a strained voice.
You smile, “Hmm can’t I?”
You press your lips on hers firmly, before pulling away. “Okay, I’m yours.”
Mari nods, a goofy smile stretching onto her face. Eyes brightening, cheeks red. “Hell yeah, you are.”

rabies prevention

mari ibarra x reader
description: you may have won capture the bone, but your girlfriend got bit by a rabid animal. the animal? shauna fucking shipman.
word count: 749
please feel free to leave a request!
mari ibarra spotify playlist!
"mari, lets go."
you grab your girlfriend gently by the wrist, leading her away from the group and back to your shared hut. she's grinning, looking back at your teammates before chanting out one last buzz.
she turns back around, now matching your pace. the fire in her step never leaves. victory, despite having been in the wilderness for who knows how long, will never not feel sweet.
but that didn't change the fact that your girlfriend might have rabies now.
"I need to clean your hand." you walked into the hut with mari, your hand finding the small of her back, guiding her to sit down.
she sat down, her grin fading into a grimace. "that fucking bitch," she muttered, looking down at her hand. you gave her a sympathetic smile, reaching out to rub one of her shoulders.
"im going to go get some water and something to wrap your hand in." you give a squeeze. "i'll be right back."
before you can even move to get up, someone else speaks to you.
"actually, you don't have to!" you and mari both flinch, looking towards the front. "I figured after that bite that you might need some care." misty smiles down at both of you, a small thing of water in one hand, wrap in the other.
"but it looks like you've got it covered, so I'll just leave these here for you."
you give a small smile, reaching out to take the stuff with a nod.
"well, I mean, unless you need some help! you know, I can-"
mari cuts misty off before she can continue. "we're fine, misty." you cringe at the strain in her voice, knowing shes trying her hardest to be nice to the girl after that round of capture the bone.
"oh. well," she moves to push her glasses up, "if you need me, you know where to find me!" she gives a laugh before leaving.
when she's gone, mari looks back at her hand and rolls her eyes. you set the stuff down on the floor, scooting yourself closer to mari. "well," you give a small smile, moving to gently grab her hand, "at least we can clean this thing faster now."
mari gives a scoff, rolling her eyes again. but, she let's you take her hand, and you count that as a win.
"she almost broke skin," you mutter, once again cursing shauna in your head. "you could have rabies you know." mari snickers at that.
you take a small article of clothing and dip it into the water, moving it back towards maris hand and gently wiping it down. she grimaced, fighting the urge to pull her hand back.
"fuck shauna dude."
you nod, agreeing with her statement. shauna was, in fact, being such a bitch lately, and this was doing her no favors in your book.
"I mean, even if I did have it," maris eyes are wide, her good hand helping her to pronunciate as she talks, "why the fuck would she bite me like that?" she points to the hand your now drying off.
"what a fucking psycho, am I right?" you nod again, now wrapping her hand up.
you do agree, of course. what shauna did was out of line. and quite frankly, a little scary. she almost broke flesh. and when you heard mari scream? game was over for you the second you heard it.
"you should've just opened your hands mar."
you look up at her, then back down at her now wrapped hand, moving to hold it in both of yours.
mari stares at you for a second, then moves to give your shoulder a little shove. "part of the plan, babe. you knew that"
you make eye contact. "ya, being decoy was part of the plan. not getting mutilated by shauna fucking shipman."
she barks a laugh. "no shit." she smiles at you. "but now, shipmans our bitch for the next week." she grins at the thought.
you shake your head, sighing and trying to suppress your smile. "mari."
you look into her eyes, and you both grin.
you move to kiss her injured hand, before bringing it back down and wrapping your girlfriend in a hug. she hugs back, using her good hand to apply pressure, before pulling back.
"ok, vans gonna start soon. we should probably get going."
you agree and the both of you move to stand up, headed towards the exit.
"can't wait to bother that fucking gaywad."

hello sorry to bother you i am still delulu about the ending and our poor Mari 💔 can you do a c.ai bot where mari got the card and her girlfriend will try to save her and even fought against everyone who tried to hunt her. she managed to give her time to run away and instead mari’s silly girlfriend fell into the pit but she didn’t fall so deep and sustained injuries. they called off the hunt thinking it’s a sign from the wilderness and it doesn’t want this “sacrifice” since mari’s girl didn’t die despite falling into the pit. and then mari brought her girlfriend back to their shared hut and cleaned up her wounds. please make it angst kinda vibe! like why did you do that? are you stupid?
Tumblr media
i hope this is what you had in mind for this bot anon! info + link below as always! <3
Tumblr media
mari somehow manages to drag you inside the hut, her arms locked tight around your waist as your legs nearly give out beneath you. it’s a blur of mud, blood and pain until she gets you down onto the cot, the one you both used to share back when nights were cold.
mari’s breathing is uneven, chest heaving like she hasn’t taken a full breath since you went over the edge. her hands won’t stop shaking where they hover uselessly above you as if she doesn’t know where to start.
“don’t move,” she snaps, voice cracking halfway through. “just- don’t be stupid and move, okay?”
your vision blurs at the edges, pain blooming where your shoulder slammed into the jagged pit wall, essentially saving you from getting impaled and killed. the fall should’ve killed you. everyone thought it did. after mari had pulled the queen of hearts, everything had happened too fast to keep track: one second, she was standing in the middle of the circle, the next, you were lunging forward. you didn’t have a plan. you just knew you weren’t going to let them take her.
they only stopped their chase when you fell. you remember the sound of gasps, the momentary chaos followed by the scrambling at the pit’s edge. the hunt was called off. the wilderness had spoken, they said. the sacrifice had been rejected and it had spared its chosen.
idiots.
mari doesn’t believe in signs anymore. she certainly never believed in saviors. not until you.
fumbling at your jacket, she curses under her breath the moment she sees the gash along your side. she tears a strip from one of the blankets and presses it against your ribs with too much force. “why did you do that?” she mutters. “you knew it was me. why the hell would you- why wouldn’t you just let me go?”
you try to speak, but she doesn’t let you.
“you’re so fucking stupid!” her hands still, bandage half-wrapped. “i got the card,” her lashes are wet when she blinks. “you were supposed to be safe. you were the only thing i was still trying to protect!”

a/n: hi 🫀anon!! it’s my first time writing for mari tbh so i hope it doesn’t sucks 😔
summary: you have pretty difficult relationship with mari. but turns out she cares more about you than her pride. modern college au. situationship. miscommunication.
warnings: mentions of alcohol, drugs.
word count: around 1.9k
Mari had been sitting in the same spot for over an hour now, nursing the same drink, which had grown unpleasantly warm in her hand. Normally by this point, she’d be halfway through a game of spin the bottle or trying to chug as much beer as she could upside down, balancing on her hands like some deranged gladiator — which usually ended in spectacular vomiting. But not tonight. Tonight, you got in the way.
Sure, the music was loud, the other girls were pretty and some of them clung to her without needing much encouragement. Even if Mari, theoretically, had a girlfriend now. But every conversation with said girlfriend left Mari so drained she couldn’t even pretend to want to fuck her afterwards. Not tonight. Even the weed made her nauseous. She sat sunk into the couch in the middle of the chaos, pretending to listen as a slightly stoned Nat was rambling about something next to her
But Mari’s eyes were fixed — glued — to you.
She kept toying with the cup in her hands, rotating it slowly, letting the vodka grow warmer with every turn. Something hollow gnawed at her from the inside as she watched some girl she didn’t even recognize grab your hand and spin you in time with the music. You laughed and something boiled over in Mari. The girl placed her hands lightly on your hips. Mari didn’t know if she was just a friend or something more, but her hand tightened involuntarily around the cup.
She wasn’t even sure what was worse: the fact that you looked happier without her, or that this girl’s hands were somewhere they absolutely shouldn’t be.
“Mar?” Natalie’s voice rasped, hoarse from too many hits. Even high, Nat could tell something was wrong.
“Hm?” Mari murmured, eyes still locked on you. That lilac skirt clung to you like a second skin. She followed your every step as you made your way toward the bar with your friend. Just a friend, Mari hoped.
“Are you planning to stare at her all night?” Nat asked, flopping upright on the couch with a grimace. She plucked the cup from Mari’s hand and drained the contents in a single swallow, wincing. Her tank top rode up, exposing her pale stomach. “’Cause you’re not the only one.”
Mari’s brow furrowed sharply, and she glanced around the room. Across the space, Shauna stood with a vape pressed to her lips, watching you like a predator deciding just how much effort it would take to catch its prey.
Mari scoffed under her breath, like the idea of Shauna Shipman being competition was laughable. You weren’t stupid enough to fall for those weak, idiotic one-liners and—
And Mari almost threw up when she saw Shauna sidle up to you and slide her arm around your waist, like it was the most natural thing in the world. You didn’t even turn toward her when she kissed your cheek. Mari blinked. Once. Twice.
Natalie narrowed her eyes, tracking the scene with growing disbelief.
“Fuck, I think im really fucking wrecked,” she muttered, pushing herself up and stretching with a crack of her joints. Mari glanced at her, half expecting her to fall and bruise her ass, but Nat just ran a hand through her hair and mumbled something about finding her girlfriend. Like she was afraid Shauna might be after her too.
It had to be a fucking joke.
When the shock finally wore off, Mari was hit with a surge of emotions so intense, she didn’t know whether she wanted to run to you and beg you to come back, punch a random mirror in the bathroom, or smash a bottle of Malibu over Shauna’s smug head.
And then you looked at her.
And Mari’s stomach turned inside out.
Their eyes met, and Mari was convinced you were fighting a silent war within yourself. Some part of her ached for you to slip free from Shauna’s arms and come back to her. Another part burned to tear you away herself—drag you into her lap and never let you go, not for the rest of the night.
She didn’t move, though the truth was glaring. A voice in her head was screaming, telling her to get off her ass and go to you, because with every second, you were slipping further through her fingers.
Your breakup—if it could even be called that—had been chaos. A messy, tangled disaster neither of you knew how to fix. How to crawl back to whatever it was you had before. Mari knew the blame sat mostly on her shoulders. At first, she rejected the thought outright. Didn’t even want to entertain it. She’d told herself she was acting normal. Just like with the other girls.
The problem was, Mari never could decide. She didn’t know how to define what you two were. When you asked, she brushed it off. When others asked, she lied, saying you were just friends. Friends who sometimes slept together. As if that explained the nights you spent tangled in her sheets. As if it erased the dates, the way you wore her clothes, the way you cheered at every Yellowjackets game in a jersey with her name across your back.
It was no surprise that, eventually, you snapped. You said you were done. Said she needed to make up her mind, that you weren’t going to keep looking to others like her personal whore. Mari had screamed back, told you you were imagining things. Rolled her eyes like you were an annoying fly buzzing in her ear, even though guilt was already gnawing at her insides.
You gave her an ultimatum. She dodged it. So you walked away. She thought she could handle life without you. A week later, she had a new girl in her bed. But three weeks in, you were still all she could think about.
Now, she watched you break away from Shauna’s embrace. Her heart stuttered in her chest as she realized—you were walking her way. You didn’t look at her as you passed, but your hand brushed her knee like an afterthought. Like a quiet message only she could decode.
You were giving her a signals. Telling her, in your own wordless way, to try. To fight for you. To shove her pride aside and act. But each time, Mari froze.
Every time—except this one.
Her body moved before her mind could catch up. Rising from the couch, her head felt dizzy—not from the alcohol or the thick, stale mix of sweat and perfume in the air—but from you. She didn’t know what pushed her forward, only that this was her moment. You were finally alone. Her so-called girlfriend was nowhere in sight, and Mari wasn’t sure she even cared where the hell she was.
She pushed through the crowd, elbowing past bodies without caring about apologies, her eyes locked on your silhouette. Her pulse quickened. For a second, she almost turned back and let you go again.
But then—you were within reach.
Her fingers wrapped around your wrist, catching you mid-step.
You turned around, not even surprised to see her there—and Mari stared at you as though she were seeing you for the very first time. She couldn’t bring herself to let go of your wrist, not when your skin was warm beneath her fingers.
“Hey,” she mumbled, almost shyly. Not like her at all. Then someone bumped into her shoulder and the fragile moment shattered. She shot the guy a death glare so sharp he immediately muttered an apology and backed off the second he realized who he’d just touched.
You laughed—soft, sudden—and Mari’s eyes snapped back to you. It comforted her more than she cared to admit, how you still hadn’t pulled away. Your hand sat so naturally in hers, as if it belonged there.
“Freshmen,” you muttered with a hint of amusement, and Mari couldn’t stop herself from smiling. It was the first time she’d heard your laugh in weeks, and it still did things to her chest that she didn’t want to name.
“Yeah...” She wet her lips, realizing too late that she needed to do something. Say something. Now, before you slipped away again. Mari told herself—silently, firmly—that she wasn’t going to waste this chance. Somehow, she found the courage, cleared her throat, and asked:
“Can we talk?”
Her lips drew into a tight line. She half-expected you to tear into her, tell her she didn’t deserve a second chance, that she was a goddamn idiot.
But you didn’t.
“I came here with someone,” you said, starting gently.
“Yeah, me too,” she cut in quickly. You tilted your head—not annoyed, more curious. Mari pressed on. “It doesn’t matter anyway. I haven’t stopped thinking about you for weeks.” The words spilled out faster than she could catch them.
You looked at her for a moment, and Mari swore something shifted in the air between you.
“I’ve been telling everyone I hate you,” you said, a small smile tugging at your lips like you were trying to hold back a full grin.
“Did it work?” Mari snorted a laugh, and you, almost unconsciously, stepped closer.
“Hate you?” you echoed, still half-laughing. Maybe something in you softened then, realizing just how much Mari cared, even if she was terrible at showing it. “No. Unfortunately.”
“Unfortunately.?” The music was pulsing through her veins, like her own blood. Her hand slipped to your hip, holding you in place. “You swapped me for Shauna. I’d say you hate yourself and your mental health way more than you hate me.”
You laughed again, and your hand landed on her shoulder. It had been weeks since you’d been this close. The scent of your perfume blended with traces of alcohol filled her senses. Mari’s other hand finally let go of your wrist and found its way to your hip. Everything felt so easy. Like the last few weeks had never happened.
“Maybe I wanted you to be jealous,” you murmured, playing with the hem of her shirt. Mari soaked in every word like it was oxygen. Nothing else mattered anymore—not the crowd, not the heat, not the fact that Shauna could appear any second and start a scene.
Just like before, her eyes were on you and only you. Drowning in your scent, fighting the urge to bury her face in your neck and beg for forgiveness.
“Does Shauna know?” she asked, leaning in slightly.
“Not exactly,” you said, voice light. “Do you want her to?”
“Not exactly,” she echoed, and your fingers brushed along her neck. The tiny hairs there stood on end. Her hands tightened on your hips.
Neither of you knew who moved first. Maybe it was both of you, closing the distance in tandem—but Mari didn’t care. All that mattered was that she was kissing you again after all these weeks. Like muscle memory, your arms slipped around her neck. Your lips were warm, softer than she remembered.
It didn’t take long before Mari deepened the kiss, her hand slipping under the fabric of your top, savouring the softness of your skin. Her thumb brushed your ribs and you let out a soft sound, pressing into her like you never wanted space between you again.
Your tongue slid past her lips and Mari’s heart started beating even faster. The kiss turned from slow and searching into something hotter, hungrier. The air in the room was stifling—and Mari felt like she might actually combust.
She pulled away only when she physically couldn’t breathe anymore. You panted against her mouth, and still, she couldn’t make herself step back.
“My room?” she asked, her fingers trailing down your thigh, brushing the skin there.
You swallowed hard, managed only a nod. But that was all Mari needed.
A moment later, she was tugging you upstairs.

"ill be right back."
before you can even move to get up, someone else speaks to you.
"actually, you don't have to!" you and mari both flinch, looking towards the front. "I figured after that bite that you might need some care." misty smiles down at both of you, a small thing of water in one hand, wrap in the other.
"but it looks like you've got it covered, so l'll just leave these here for you."
you give a small smile, reaching out to take the stuff with a nod.
"mean, even if I did have it," maris eyes are wide, her good hand helping her to pronunciate as she talks, "why the fuck would she bite me like that?" she points to the hand your now drying off.
"no shit.'" she smiles at you.
